Interior, Parvo's base, office.
Sierra is waiting for Ryan to return. She hears footsteps in the hall, returns to the computer and makes herself look busy. She is relieved when Ryan enters the room.
Ryan (quietly)
"Ready to go?"
Sierra:
"I will be in just a second."
Sierra pulls up the mail screen and downloads that attached file. The screen immediately turns black and large red letters appear spelling out "A special gift from the Road Rovers." Below this in smaller letters the screen reads "If your system fries its self beyond repair and throws your entire operation into confusion, do not be alarmed. This is normal."
Sierra (happy)
"Now I'm ready."
Interior, Parvo's base, corridor.
DJ and Dylan are running towards the hangar. The corridor is empty, most everyone is asleep. They make it to the hangar without incident. In the hangar they find a security team of three human soldiers and eight cano-mutants positioned in various places. The two Rovers quickly duck behind a stack of oil barrels before they are seen..
Interior, Parvo's base, hangar.
Dylan (whispering)
"Great, now what? You rigged all of those choppers so that pretty much rules out flying out of here."
DJ (whispering)
"I didn't plan on flying out. Now we've just got to wait for Sierra. Hopefully she'll be able to knock out security."
Dylan (whispering)
"If I know Sierra she'll knock out everything but the toilets."
Interior, Parvo's base, main control room.
This room is Parvo's equivalent of the RRMC operations center. It is laid out much the same but without the Master's balcony and the tactical planning station. In the center of the room is a semi-circular console on a platform which can be raised above the rest of the room. It is from here that Parvo oversees operations. This station is vacant as Parvo is in bed. There is a skeleton crew on duty. A pair of cano-mutants are watching a set of security monitors. (Closer inspection reveals they actually have Jay Leno on one of the screens and are watching him instead of the security monitors.) Two more cano-mutants and a human officer walk from station to station, checking on things such as radar tracking and power distribution. It is a scene of quiet efficiency (except for Leno). The scene of efficiency disappears suddenly as the lights go off and the room is illuminated only by the red emergency lights. All the screens in the room go black and in red letters they display the same message that showed up on the computer where Sierra had been working.
Officer (surprised)
"What the...?!?!"
He focuses his attention on one of the computer screens and sees the message.
Officer (angry)
"No!"
He picks up a microphone and flips the intercom switch.
"Control to all security teams, red alert, red alert...."
He stops when he realizes the intercom power light is not on. The radar screens are blank as well, everything is knocked out."
Officer (distressed, to himself)
"The General is going to have me cleaning bathrooms for this."
Interior, Parvo's base, hangar.
DJ and Dylan are still crouched behind the oil drums. The lights suddenly go out and sounds of confusion come from the guards.
Human guard(confused)
"What happened?"
Dylan smiles.
(whispering) "I think Sierra just happened."
DJ points at the big rig that had arrived earlier that day.
"Go for that one. I don't think they've had time to unload it. We might as well hurt them as much as possible by taking whatever is in that trailer along with us. First though we'd better take care of these guards, and there's something I need to attend to."
Dylan:
"What's that?"
DJ:
"My work is guaranteed for thirty minutes or thirty feet, whichever comes first. The warranty on that chopper has long since run out."
Dylan suppresses a laugh and silently heads for the one of the nearest guards.
DJ stands, draws his two lasers and quietly makes his way along the wall toward the side of the hangar where the helicopters are positioned. Just as DJ reaches his destination the dim red backup lights come on, illuminating Dylan who is almost upon one of the cano-mutant guards.
Human guard (surprised)
"Poncho! Behind you!"
The cano-mutant whirls around and faces Dylan.
Dylan (calm)
"Hi there."
Dylan fires his weapon and the mutant falls to the floor unconscious. Having heard the guard's warning and the sound of Dylan's laser fire the other cano-mutants and three human guards turn towards him and take aim with their weapons.
Dylan manages to stun the guard nearest him. The remaining guards all fire at once, Dylan dives to the floor and rolls under a humvee just in time to avoid being hit.
DJ has climbed into the cockpit of the chopper he repaired earlier. Having no tools to sabotage the engine, he sets his two pistols to full power and blasts the control panel. The sound of his shots draw the guard's attention away from Dylan. DJ leaps out of the chopper, twirling his weapons on his index fingers like a gun slinger from a bad western movie.
DJ:
"There's a new sheriff in town."
In one fluid motion DJ stops twirling the guns, brings them to bare, and stuns two cano-mutants at once. A shot from behind the guards strikes one of the humans in the back. The guards are startled and loose their focus for a second, DJ takes advantage of this and picks off another cano-mutant before making a mad dash for cover behind a large crate. Shots from lasers and cano blasters follow him but none find their mark.
The view shifts to Dylan who is laying on his stomach under one of the transport trucks. He rolls out and fires a shot at a passing cano-mutant. His aim is true and the mutant falls. This leaves two humans and two mutants. All but one human turn on Dylan. A shot from DJ takes out one of the emergency lights and the hangar darkens even more. This distraction gives Dylan time to scurry back under the truck.
Two of the mutants begin to converge on Dylan's hiding place while the others head for DJ. Just before the two Rovers are forced to begin blasting for their lives, the door to the hangar opens and there stands Ryan, holding a gun to Sierra's head.
Interior, Parvo's base, Parvo's personal quarters.
Parvo is laying in bed when the sound of frantic knocking on his door awakens him. He sits up and fumbles for the light switch, the light doesn't come on.
Parvo (tired)
"Odd."
He gets up and walks toward the door. Instead of his usual garb he is wearing black sweat pants and a white t-shirt that says "Nice people suck". He walks to the door and opens it. There stands a very nervous looking human soldier.
Parvo (annoyed)
"Yes? What?"
Soldier (nervous)
"Sir the Road Rovers gave us a computer virus, the entire system's shut down, nothing works."
Parvo (angry)
"Well don't just stand there, round up some security teams and make sure the prisoners haven't escaped!"
Soldier:
"Yes sir!"
Parvo sighs.
"I wonder if I'm the only bad guy who has these problems."
Interior, Parvo's base, hangar.
As it was before, except the remaining guards have turned to face Ryan and Sierra.
Ryan (threatening)
"Rovers! You have to the count of ten to drop your guns and come out with your hands up, or things will get mighty unhealthy for your friend. One! Two! Three! Four!..."
DJ and Dylan come out of their hiding places with their hands in the air.
Ryan:
"Get over against the wall where I can see you."
DJ and Dylan obey. As they move towards the nearest wall Sierra suddenly brings her hands out from behind her back with a gun. Ryan turns his own weapon from Sierra to the guards and in a matter of seconds the two of them stun the four remaining guards.
DJ smiles.
"Like I say, the scariest sight in the world..."
Sierra (interrupting)
"Is a girl on the wrong end of a gun."
DJ:
"Got that right."
Dylan:
"Hey, nice going you two."
Dylan and DJ retrieve their weapons and explain the plan to Sierra and Ryan as they walk toward the semi. They walk up to the truck and DJ tries the driver side door, it opens. He climbs into the seat and finds the keys in the ignition.
DJ (voice over, amused)
"Such trusting souls."
This is a typical over-the-road semi truck cab. A wide diameter steering wheel in front of the driver seat. The gear shifter is about two and a half feet long, coming up from the floor. There is a switch on the front of the grip for changing the gear ranges. Over a dozen gauges and at least twice as many switches cover the dash. Directly behind the driver and passenger seats is a sleeper compartment with a bunk and a small storage cabinet.
DJ leans across the cab and opens the passenger door for the others, then he turns the key. The engine immediately starts.
DJ:
"Oooo that's a beautiful sound."
Dylan, Sierra and Ryan climb into the cab. Ryan and Sierra sit on the small bunk back in the sleeper, Dylan takes the passenger seat.
Ryan:
"So now how do we get out of here? Everything's knocked out, the hangar doors can't be opened.
DJ:
Then I guess we'll have to make our own door.
DJ climbs out of the cab and runs to one of the fallen cano-mutants. He picks up the guard's cano blaster, aims at the hangar doors, and holds his finger down on the trigger. After many rapid hits from the high power cano blaster there is a huge, gaping hole in the hangar door. DJ returns to the truck.
Dylan:
"Well, what are we waiting for?"
DJ points to a small gauge on the dash.
"This thing has air brakes, we have to build some pressure up before we have any stopping power."
Sierra:
"Great, tell me again why you like these things so much?"
DJ (smug)
"I like ‘em because I get to exercise the unwritten rule of the road."
Sierra:
"And what would that be?"
DJ:
"The vehicle with the biggest tires gets the right of way."
Dylan glances in the side view mirror on his side and sees a group of soldiers entering the hangar and heading right for them.
"DJ we've got company."
DJ looks in the mirror.
"Ah heck, who needs brakes anyway?"
Jamming the truck into gear, DJ dumps the clutch and floors the accelerator. He shifts up from first to second to third, the truck accelerates towards the hole in the hangar doors. Dylan leans out his window and fires a few shots toward the soldiers. They are so busy dodging Dylan's random fire that they don't have time to shoot at the truck. By the time Dylan stops shooting DJ has them out the door.
Exterior, outside Parvo's compound, dirt road, night.
The semi speeds down the dirt road away from the compound. Three humvees exit the hangar and give chase.
Interior, Freightliner cab.
DJ is watching the mirrors.
"Our friends don't seem to want us to leave so soon."
Sierra:
"This thing needs a sunroof."
She sets her laser to full power and blasts a large hole in the roof of the sleeper. She and Ryan then climb out the hole, stand on the roof of the cab and jump to the top of the trailer. This puts them in perfect position to fire on the humvees. The darkness of the night hides them and the soldiers driving the humvees do not see them atop the trailer. Sierra and Ryan aim just below the pursuing headlights and have no trouble taking out the tires on the humvees.
Interior, Parvo's base, hangar.
Parvo (now dressed normally) enters the hangar and looks around. He is escorted by the Groomer and two cano-mutants. His eyes focus on the spot where the Freightliner had been parked.
Parvo (distressed, angry)
"NO!!!"
He turns to the Groomer
"Get the chopper crews in here! I want that truck back!"
The Groomer salutes.
"Aye sir!"
She turns and runs out of the room.
Parvo (to himself)
"Two dozen things they could have escaped in, and they had to take that one. Ugh, why me?"
Exterior, dirt road.
The Freightliner winds it's way through the woods and comes to a paved road. The truck makes a right turn onto the paved road and accelerates into the distance.
Interior, Freightliner cab.
Sierra and Ryan have re-entered the cab through the hole in the roof and are again sitting on the bunk in the sleeper. DJ is still pouring on the speed. He flips the switch on the front of the shifter and goes through the gear pattern again.
DJ:
"She's pulling hard, whatever's in that trailer is heavy."
Dylan:
"Think we're out of trouble?"
DJ:
"Probably. Parvo never wastes a lot of energy chasing Road Rovers."
DJ glances at the air pressure gauge, it is now up to full.
"I think we can relax for a while."
Interior, Parvo's base, hangar.
Men in flight suits are preparing the helicopters for takeoff. We can see that somebody has blasted through the doors in the roof to allow the aircraft to get out. One of the chopper pilots starts his engine and we hear a high pitched whine. The whine increases to a roar and smoke begins to come from the engine compartment. The Roar finally gives way to an earsplitting bang as the engine over speeds and flings its self apart. Three more helicopters suffer the same fate. Parvo realizes what has been done to him and orders the pilots of the remaining choppers to abort takeoff. The Groomer steps up next to him.
Groomer:
"Orders General?"
Parvo:
"Use the humvees and trucks. I don't care how you do it but stop those dogs. Just be sure not to destroy them until after you've got them stopped, we need that load undamaged."
The Groomer begins giving orders. Parvo walks over to the wall and leans against it, he sighs.
"Momma always told me there'd be days like this."
Interior, RRMC, hangar.
The Sonic Rover enters through the hatch in the roof and lands... well... hits actually. The door opens and five very dejected looking Road Rovers exit the plane.
Interior, RRMC, briefing room.
This room has a large round table with many chairs positioned around it. There is one large view screen set in the wall and a podium where the Master stands. The Master is here now and the Rovers are seated in chairs at the table.
Hunter:
Not a sign of them Master.
Colleen:
"There are a few spots we haven't covered yet, and there's over a dozen more in other countries."
Blitz:
"I can not understand Master how they disappeared so quickly. It's like they vanished into thin air."
Exile:
"We should also be looking at possibility that evil Parvo man has set up a new shopski."
Hunter:
"At any rate, we're going nowhere fast. We'll need to call in some help."
Master:
"I'll see to that. In the mean time the five of you had better get some sleep, you'll need to be fresh in the morning."
Exterior, mountains, two-lane road.
The Freightliner makes its way down a hill. Dense forest lines both sides of the road. The headlights illuminate the road ahead while the tiny orange marker lights dot out the big rig's outline.
Interior, Freightliner cab.
Everybody has relaxed but they are still on their guard. DJ reaches forward and flips a switch on the dash. The truck slows down slightly and the engine sound changes from a steady purr to a deep, loud growl. This startles Dylan and Sierra, they sit bolt upright.
Sierra (alarmed)
"What's happening?"
DJ (calm)
"Nothing, that's just the jake brakes." (Author's note. Jake brake is not a play on my name, it is a driver's slang term for the "Jacobs engine brake")
DJ waits a few seconds longer, then hits the switch again. The engine quiets down and the truck stops decelerating. Everybody relaxes again.
Dylan (to DJ)
"Any idea where we're going?"
DJ:
"Nope, but this road has to lead somewhere, maybe our friend can help us out with that question."
Ryan:
"I'm afraid not. I've only been stationed there a week and have always flown in and out."
DJ:
"I doubt we'll get any reception in these mountains but..."
He reaches up and takes the mic for the CB off its hook.
DJ (into CB)
"Breaker breaker, anybody got their ears on out there? Come back."
He pauses, there is no response.
"Breaker breaker, anybody on the road? Come on."
Nothing, DJ changes channels and tries again. He is again met with failure, he tries a few more channels and gives up. Ryan smacks himself in the forehead.
Ryan (upset)
"Man, I knew I forgot something! I was going to bring a cell phone so we could call for help."
Dylan:
"Don't go beating yourself up over it, we can't do anything about it now."
The road begins to head up hill. The engine lugs down and DJ downshifts. The engine continues to load up, DJ drops three more gears.
Ryan (doubtful)
"Are we going to make it up?"
DJ (confidant)
"Oh yeah. Going up hill is never a problem, just take it slow. Going down is what kills ya."
Ryan:
"How so?"
DJ:
"Going up may slow you down, but you can always do it, just drop her down into grandma gear and put your foot down. On the downgrade you have gravity to deal with, if you miss a shift or don't use just the right braking pattern you'll end up in a ditch... or worse."
Sierra (worried)
"Uh, you've done this before? Right DJ?"
DJ smiles.
"Trust me."
Sierra:
"That's it, we're dead."
DJ glances in his side mirror, he sees a pair of headlights. The shape of a medium sized truck appears behind the headlights. The other truck crosses the center line and proceeds to pass the Rovers in the Freightliner. As it passes we see that it is a military style transport.
DJ (worried)
"Ryan, are there any legitimate military bases around here?"
Ryan:
"No."
DJ:
"Then we're in trouble. That truck that just passed was one of Parvo's."
Dylan:
"Why'd they go on past us?"
DJ:
"I don't know, but whatever he's planning to do I'm not gonna let him do it. I'll get you guys out of this if it's the last thing I ever do."
A few tense moments pass and another pair of headlights appears in the mirror. This one makes no effort to pass.
Dylan:
"Uh oh, I think they're trying to put us in a box."
Sierra:
"I'll handle this one."
She climbs out through her "sunroof" and jumps to the trailer as she had done earlier, but when she prepares to take aim she is suddenly blinded as the driver turns on his high beams. With no way to aim and shoot, Sierra retreats back to the cab.
In the cab DJ is having difficulties, the high beams are reflecting in his side mirror and blinding him. He looks toward the right shoulder of the road and keeps driving. Dylan and Ryan get their guns ready.
Moments later the Freightliner crests the hill. Again on level ground, DJ is able to accelerate to a higher speed. As they round a bend they see the first truck that had passed them, it is positioned sideways on the road, blocking both lanes.
DJ:
"So that's their game. Ok, I'll play."
Everybody looks questioningly towards DJ.
DJ:
"Y'all ever seen the movie ‘Black Dog' ?"
Ryan and Sierra shake their heads.
Dylan:
"Yeah, I've seen it, wha.... Oh no! DJ you're not going to....."
DJ:
"Oh yes. We're about to demonstrate the scientific law of the irresistible force meeting with the immovable object, somebody'd better duck!"
DJ puts the pedal down and takes a higher gear.
Sierra (worried)
"Uh, DJ..."
DJ shifts up again....
Ryan (worried)
"DJ...."
DJ takes yet another gear...
Dylan (worried)
"DJ...."
DJ continues to accelerate towards the truck blocking the road.
All (frantic)
"DJ...!!!!"
DJ aims for the extreme rear of the GEN-PAR truck.
"Hold on y'all!"
Interior, cab of GEN-PAR transport truck.
There are two cano-mutants in here. The one behind the wheel can't believe his eyes.
"That dog nuts!! He try to kill us!"
Just then the Freightliner slams into the back of their vehicle, sparks fly as the larger truck violently pushes them aside.
Cano-mutant driver:
"Groomer not like this."
Cano-mutant passenger:
"I let you tell her."
Interior, Freightliner cab.
Dylan is sitting rigidly in the passenger seat, Sierra is holding her hand over her heart, and Ryan is white as a ghost.
DJ:
"There, that wasn't so bad, was it?"
The others glare at him.
DJ (naive)
"What?"
Exterior...
The road begins to go down hill, the other GEN-PAR truck is still behind the Rovers and accelerates to catch up with them.
Interior, Freightliner cab.
Dylan is looking in the side view mirror on the passenger side.
"Here they come, I think they're gonna ram us."
DJ:
"Ok, I aim to please."
DJ turns the jake brakes on full power and the truck slows down. Seeing the Freightliner's brake lights come on in front of him, the driver of the GEN-PAR truck instinctively swerves to the side and comes along side the Freightliner. DJ downshifts and the other truck continues on past them, then cuts back into their lane several yards in front of them.
DJ:
"Ok, let's play bumper cars."
He accelerates towards the GEN-PAR truck. The brake lights come on in front of DJ, but instead of swerving away like the other driver had done, he uses his own brakes and slows down so the Freightliner gently comes into contact with the rear of the other vehicle. DJ then accelerates and begins to push the other truck down the hill. The driver continues to ride his brakes and DJ continues to push. Smoke begins to come from under the GEN-PAR truck.
Dylan:
"Phew, what's that smell?"
DJ (smug)
"Southern fried air brakes."
DJ pushes for several hundred more yards, then eases up, the GEN-PAR truck continues down the hill, gaining speed.
Sierra:
"Why doesn't he slow down?"
DJ:
"The brakes on these things are very unforgiving, you abuse them like that and they'll just fry themselves. If that guy doesn't catch himself a lower gear he's gonna loose it."
Exterior...
We follow the GEN-PAR truck down the hill, it continues to gain speed. It finally takes a curve too fast and flies off the road, slams into a huge pine tree and rolls over on its side.
Interior, Freightliner cab.
The GEN-PAR truck has disappeared around a bend, DJ has the jake brakes on full and is preparing to ease the Freightliner around that same bend.
Sierra:
"You think he made it?"
DJ:
"If he did he'll probably turn in his license and never drive again."
They take the curve and the overturned truck comes into view.
Dylan:
"Aye-caramba, I bet that was an e-ticket ride."
As they pass the wreck, Dylan waves at the unfortunate human driver who is climbing out his window, the driver shakes his fist at the Rovers as they accelerate into the distance. DJ casts an uneasy glance in his mirror.
DJ:
"I hope this road comes to an intersection soon, with nowhere else to go Parvo is going to have no trouble finding us again."
Dylan (uneasy)
"DJ, I think he's already found us again."
DJ looks in his mirror again. Sure enough, there are three pairs of head lights, coming fast.
DJ (exasperated)
"Oh c'mon, give me a break!!"
Exterior...
Three humvees are swiftly gaining on the Freightliner. Having learned from past mistakes, they all switch on their high beams. We see Sierra and Ryan climb out their hole and jump to the trailer again, but this time instead of trying to take out their pursuer's tires, they crouch and wait. The lead humvee draws along side the Freightliner on the driver side. Sierra and Ryan proceed to fire down on the vehicle but their hand lasers aren't doing much damage to the humvee's armor plating. Dylan sticks his head up through the hole.
Dylan (yelling)
"Hang on you two!"
Sierra and Ryan lower themselves and the truck begins to move to the left, crowding the humvee into the next lane and off the road. A cano-mutant in the passenger seat of the humvee sticks his head out the window and prepares to shoot toward the cab of the Freightliner. Sierra happens to glance over the side of the trailer and see this. She quickly uses her own weapon to shoot the blaster from the mutant's grip. She then scores a hit on the humvee's windshield and the stricken vehicle careens off the road and into a tree.
The second humvee has begun to work its way up the truck's passenger side, DJ has seen this and performs the same maneuver he did to get rid of the first one. This time though, the humvee brakes and quickly slows down, avoiding being run off the road by the 18 wheeler. Sierra and Ryan take pot shots, but with the high beams in their eyes they cannot see to aim.
Interior, Freightliner cab.
DJ has his foot straight to the floor, his gaze is rapidly shifting from the road, to the mirrors, and back again. Dylan has his gun at the ready and is leaning out the passenger side window, facing towards the rear. He fires every time he sees the headlights drift toward his side, keeping the pursuers from coming along side. DJ has to drive, so he is unable to defend his side in the same manner. DJ watches in his mirror as a humvee attempts to move up next to the truck. Fire from Sierra and Ryan atop the trailer seem to be holding it at bay.
Exterior...
Random laser fire from the top of the trailer is keeping the humvees back. A cano-mutant armed with a heavy blaster sticks his head out the passenger side window of the humvee closest to the truck. He aims his blaster forward and squeezes the trigger...
Interior, Freightliner cab.
DJ is watching the road ahead, he prepares to downshift for a curve when suddenly a high power laser beam blazes past his window, and hits the side view mirror. The angle of the mirror reflects the laser beam back directly into the cab....
DJ (in extreme pain and shock)
"AAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHH...!!! He shot me! He shot me!"
Dylan (surprised, horrified)
"Oh no, DJ!!"
The truck is fast approaching the curve, DJ starts his downshift, but he shivers in pain and his foot slips off the clutch. Now in neutral, the huge truck begins to gain speed. DJ uses all his strength to jam the shifter into a gear which turns out to be three speeds lower than the one they were traveling in. The truck jerks violently and Dylan is thrown forward.
Exterior...
Sierra and Ryan are thrown flat down as the truck slows drastically. Somehow they manage to stay atop the trailer. One of the humvees which was following closely behind doesn't have time to react, it slams into the rear of the big rig and skids sideways, hitting the other humvee and pushing it off the road and into a tree. The front end of the vehicle which struck the truck is completely destroyed, thus they are both out of action. The Freightliner continues down the road until it is safely away from the soldiers and crashed vehicles, then it eases over to the side of the road and comes to a stop.
