DEMENTITY

Our mentor Bondservnt Speaks candidly with Bassist Andrew hunt of the band on a rainy day in hell.

DMM MAGAZINE: Do you consider yourselves a death metal band solely or do you have another label for it.?
A. HUNT: We're deathmetal pure and simple... A lot of people seem to be afraid of that... As if there's got to be some new niche or style.

DMM MAGAZINE: Do you mix any other elements into your style;- Being Purist as a Death Metal Act... Does that raise a few eyebrows?
A. HUNT: We mix a little groove in once in a while... what ever hits us that would make the song heavier... Yeah a lot of people wonder why we're not playing Hardcore or Metalcore... or something... We've had a few persons, tell us death metal was dead. It doesn't bother us though... We love to play it.

DMM MAGAZINE: What do you think defines those other forms? Is it vocal style or musical tempo?
A. HUNT: We're not in it to win over a crowd... If someone listens to our stuff and they like it. That's awesome... If they don't we could care less. I think from the guitar sound to the vocals... The drumming... The overall attitude of the music...

DMM MAGAZINE: (speaking as a layman-) I don't like punk personally... So I don't know what metalcore is? Nor do I understand what hardcore is..? Could you explain those terms so the "layman" can understand?
A. HUNT: Well when I think of Hardcore I think of old bands like the Cromags...and Sick of it all...Really punchy drums and guitar work.....I'm not to sure what metalcore is ...I think heavier version of it... More crunch in the guitars... There's so many kinds of "core" and Metal, It's hard to keep up with it.

DMM MAGAZINE: Could you describe what defines pure death metal?
A. HUNT: Playing as loud and as heavy can with total disregard for your vocal chords. Deathmetal Is musical Rebellion... Harnessed Chaos... The vocals. The guitar work... The drums... All go into this pounding mix... Good deathmetal makes you want to jump in the pit.

DMM MAGAZINE: I believe its lyrical topics usually are centered on the depth's of human atrocities... Either it's a discussion of the decay of the human experience... By describing the horrors of other's... Or entering into the mind of the insane by acting out the motivation's of a murderer in song lyrics. I think Death metal as a pure art form is a horror movie topic mixed with a heavy thrash speed music... (not like the silly stupid topics of commercial rock was in the 80's) All mixed with a deep growl that is indescribable as human speech...
A. HUNT: I think the decay of morality... Or the human condition is a fitting topic for deathmetal... It's raw... And its a wound most people don't like to poke at... It's a release too... We go where most people don't want to put themselves. But they need that release so they listen to the music. It's a release too... We go where most people don't want to put themselves. But they need that release so they listen to the music.

DMM MAGAZINE: A release can sometimes produce another result... Like in people wanting to LIVE out the actions taken in the lyrics... What do you think about their mental weakness?
A. HUNT: The mental midgets that chop up there dogs after listening to a deathmetal tune are cows... They have no minds of their own... You shouldn't be trying to gain an identity from any type of music.

DMM MAGAZINE: Stupid people sometimes take up the chainsaw after watching a popular movie... Foolish children sometimes copy horror movies. Popular stars get blamed for fan suicides... More examples of cows? And sheep?
A. HUNT: That's a long list... I think it can be defined by anyone who has to be told what the "truth" is, or which way to go in their life... As soon as people start figuring out that if they hack someone up with a chainsaw... It's their fault... Their choice... Nothing forces your hand but your own mind.

DMM MAGAZINE: Who is currently in the band... Can you introduce yourself and the other members?
A. HUNT:There's Mat Kinndal on Guitar- Jason Stacy on Guitars, Drums, Vocals... And myself, Andrew Hunt on Bass, Vocals.

DMM MAGAZINE: So currently it's a 3 piece... What are your future plans to move Jason to fill the guitar slot on a permanent basis?
A. HUNT:Jason's a hell of a Drummer... We'd clone him if we could... But he's even better on guitar... So he's gonna get the job right when we find a Drummer.

DMM MAGAZINE:Could you describe you favorite song on the demo?-- And perhaps give our reader's your website address.
A. HUNT:--Eroded--... Is one of my favorites to play and sing... As a song it's a Melodic Schitzo... It grabs hold of your throat when you least expect it... By all means go visit the site... www.dementity.net - There's a free download of the song (invoking)Dementity... And you can buy the demo there as well...

DMM MAGAZINE: What do you charge for the demo currently- And are there any plans to have any video on a CD in the future?
A. HUNT:The Demo: Prelude to Dischord CD is $5.99 It's a 4 song demo. And if you're lucky enough to have a computer it comes with a nice little multimedia rundown of the band... We're to start Shooting the video for (invoking)Dementity in about two weeks...

DMM MAGAZINE: When I surfed the page I saw no photographs of the band? Are you guy's all Butt ugly?
A HUNT: No, we're all Cursed with Beauty. If you don't count the arm growing out of my back... Actually we've updated the site recently. There's picture's there for your viewing pleasure. Although I look like I'm wiping drool off in mine...

DMM MAGAZINE: So the radiation treatments to exercise your demons were unsuccessful?
A. HUNT: No they weren't. But my extra arm in back helps out when I'm playing... I can hold a beer.

DMM MAGAZINE: Are there plans to keep your head in a jar after your demise?
A. HUNT: I was thinking about having it bronzed-turned into an ashtray or something... Or maybe have it stuffed into a few tennis balls and thrown in the ocean.

DMM MAGAZINE: That would be a good idea... That way when some future scientist finds your head in a fossilized shark... They'll think we (as a culture) ate tennis balls?
A. HUNT: There's been less relevant theories in the scientific community. Why not!

DMM MAGAZINE: what is your shoe size man. I have always wanted to know?
A. HUNT: 10 1/2... No you cannot borrow any of my shoes!

DMM MAGAZINE: I was thinking about having a shoe abortion out of my mouth next time we meet... I just needed to get the size right ... that way the tools will fit. Since I figured you'd plant a boot in my face!
A. HUNT: Well you have to have protection... We would have a lot less shoe abortions if people started taking responsibility.

DMM MAGAZINE: Now that I have booted up your CD I want to cut you up with a chainsaw... Then perhaps commit suicide... Would that be cool with you?
A. HUNT: You won't have to Commit suicide if you come at me with a chainsaw... I've got a very strong will to live.

DMM MAGAZINE: What bands have you opened for; And what are your favorites?
A. HUNT: As DEMENTITY We haven't opened for anyone yet... One of the best bands I've ever played with was a crew called Foul Stench... They were great.

DMM MAGAZINE: DEMENTITY is in the total underground stage at this point?
A. HUNT: Very much so... We've been getting great exposure through our website... We've had almost 800 downloads of the song (invoking)Dementity in about two weeks.

DMM MAGAZINE: What is your opinion of Black Metal? Has it affected you in any way?
A. HUNT: I've only heard a few black metal bands... I really don't get into it

DMM MAGAZINE: which ones have you heard? Can you name them?
A. HUNT: I've heard Cradle of Filth. Which I guess is black metal... And I've heard a Band called Beknighted out of North Carolina I think... They were ok.

DMM MAGAZINE: those are good examples of more eclectic black metal... Perhaps with flutes and slow parts... I speak of the fast material that exists...
DMM MAGAZINE: I am currently into the older KULT black metal stuff... I'd recommend bands like IMMORTAL and MAYHEM for speed acts of destruction... And even EMPEROR as a starter kit in becoming a dark lord!
A. HUNT: .....Comes complete with corpse paint and Broadsword huh? I'll have to check them out.
DMM MAGAZINE: I can get you a starter kit if you'd send in your coupons! Do you want the plastic sword? or the real one? With my blood on it?
A. HUNT: I'm saving up for that suit of full plate armor...Better give me the plastic one. It hurts more when you stick it in someone's eye.

DMM MAGAZINE: Can I plug my website's radio station for a strange mix of black metal and death metal?
A. HUNT: Be my guest ....
DMM MAGAZINE: http://stations.mp3s.com/stations/45/death_metal_maddness_radio.html
DMM MAGAZINE: It's the mp3.com version... The one with all the above ground stuff... There is another underground version... Where I have all sorts of strange acts from Belgium on it...

DMM MAGAZINE: Have you had good experience with mp3.com?
A. HUNT: Sounds good I'll have to check that out too..... We've actually broke into the top 5 in the deathmetal charts a little while ago. Yeah it was a trip... We've since fallen to 59 I think... But we were in the top 40 for about a week.

DMM MAGAZINE: Well then I will have to add you in the top 5 songs on my station then...!! Did you earn much payback for playback from that?
A. HUNT: Great.... Well not a lot but just for that song we got like $21.

DMM MAGAZINE: Do you have an address to plug for the mp3.com site?
A. HUNT: You can check it out at www.mp3.com/dementity

DMM MAGAZINE: I am looking forward to watching some video from you guys... And I hear it's in the works... When will we be seeing some?
A. HUNT: We're shooting for about a month of postproduction... We don't want it to be a little Cheesy video... With trees blowing up... And really bad fx... By that time we'll have some live footage too... So we can release it all on one Video.
DMM MAGAZINE: have you ever heard MAYHEM - wolf's lair abyss? I'd recommend that as a good first listen for raw fast blackmetal...
A. HUNT: I'll have to put them on my to-do list... haven't heard a lot of black metal stuff

DMM MAGAZINE: Well, we have a video page that usually features one or two songs from a band... In streaming format... To get away from just having mp3's so if you'd like to feature one or two songs as a teaser for the rest of the package... We'd be proud to have you. We just added IN NOMINE SATANAS' output of CANNIBAL CORPSE from 1990 with Chris Barnes on vocals. We have an arrangement with Gus Carillo to produce the video's online for the TV show in Los Angeles...
A. HUNT: That would be great.....we'd love to be on the video page.

DMM MAGAZINE: We would like to have you on the show... It's currently cable in L.A.
A. HUNT: Cool.....There's a few good cable shows in this neck of the woods too....

DMM MAGAZINE: Well if you know any producer's that have PURE underground metal I'm sure Gus would like to syndicate his show!
A. HUNT: Yeah I can send you some email addresses One is Metalamania ...other is The Show. Hey man hate to cut you off but I got to head out... If you have more stuff you want to go over give me a call.
DMM MAGAZINE: Thanks a lot for the interview. We hope to see you do well.

NOCTUARY
American Blackmetal Lead Guitarist Joeseph Van Fossen Speaks about the band, and the recent contribution's
to Black Metal that have come out of southern california's power blacked out hills.

DMM MAGAZINE:  What size shoes do you wear?
NOCTUARY: 4

DMM MAGAZINE:    What is the inverse proportion of a swallow's air speed to the picking hand?
NOCTUARY: I don't know the average airspeed of the average swallow.

DMM MAGAZINE:  How long ago was NOCTUARY formed?
NOCTUARY:5 years ago almost... back in '96.

DMM MAGAZINE:  What was the main reason you became involved with Black metal?
NOCTUARY: I felt it was a valid form of expression for myself. I was already involved in a black/death band called Summoned... and when I wrote songs for the band, they were more in a melodic black metal vein, as opposed to the atonal old-incantation-esque style that Summoned was doing.

DMM MAGAZINE:  What do you think is the main concept behind Black Metal in general?
NOCTUARY: I don't think there is one.

DMM MAGAZINE:  Do you think Burning a Christian Church defines Black Metal's mission?
NOCTUARY: No. Writing good music would me my first concern...

DMM MAGAZINE: What do you think of Burzum? (did Count Grishnak deserve what he's going through now?)
NOCTUARY: Sure, he killed someone... that's what you get for killing someone in Norway, I guess. As far as Burzum goes, the first album's all right, the rest of it is pretty boring.

DMM MAGAZINE:  What is the largest, and the smallest shows you have played?
NOCTUARY: I guess the largest would be Milwaukee Metalfest '98. That was pretty big and had a good turnout. The smallest would have to be Danville, California with Impaled and Antagony. I guess the promoters put the wrong date on the flyers and it was just poorly promoted... about 6-8 people were the besides the bands... strange thing too, since the parking lot was full.

DMM MAGAZINE:  What exactly does NOCTUARY mean to you? ( we have a few ideas! )
NOCTUARY: NOCTUARY means metal. Metal means NOCTUARY... roar!

DMM MAGAZINE:  What has caused the band the most trouble?
NOCTUARY: A nameless former drummer who indulges in anal sex and cocaine using.

DMM MAGAZINE:  How has Rob been able to fit into a small car? ( we hear he's quite large! ) :: bond smiles jokingly-::
NOCTUARY: We all have big cars because we're too masculine to want to drive any small car!

DMM MAGAZINE: Describe in as much detail as you can about these chapters?
NOCTUARY: About the First album- "For Salvation"-

NOCTUARY: For Salvation... ah, the mammaries. Recorded back in '98... back when the line-up was just myself and Ed Knecht. Rob Alaniz, who is now in the band full time, did session drums for us on this recording. We had worked together on the album for just about 2 weeks before the recording. We kind of rushed it, it could've been done way better, but it was fine.

DMM MAGAZINE: The 8 hymns 5 chapters :
Chapter I: "The Fires, Burning Cold"
("Clouds Donning the Black Sky", "...And Hate Embranced this Night")

NOCTUARY: The fires of contempt against the religious reign on Earth have been burning for centuries. These tracks deal with the reasons why Armageddon has come...

DMM MAGAZINE:   Chapter II: "A Call to Arms"
 "Legions March Unto Earthly Realms"),

NOCTUARY: The precursor to the battles....

DMM MAGAZINE:  Chapter III: "The Battles"
(Vengeance Before Valor", "A Tear's Descent From Heaven"),

NOCTUARY: The battles... heh, that's about all I can say concerning this.

DMM MAGAZINE:  Chapter IV: "A Victory Celebration" ("At Journey's End")
NOCTUARY: The end of the war, a reflection and turn towards the future of things to come.

DMM MAGAZINE:  and finally Chapter V: "The Rebirth"
("From Ashes We Rise", "Forever Silent")

NOCTUARY: A time of rebirth and strength in the newfound glory.. blah, blah, blah.

DMM MAGAZINE:  Is there any kind of concept that this album raises? (does it reflect some ancient theme?)
NOCTUARY: Armageddon would be the theme. More of an Armageddon of the way of thinking rather than a purely physical one. No ancient themes.

DMM MAGAZINE:   You played at Milwaukee Metalfest- who did you share the stage with?
>   Venom ?
>   Cradle Of Filth ?
>   Dark Funeral ?

NOCTUARY: I think Cradle of Filth played one of the years we did. Venom didn't though... we were supposed to open for them locally, but that show fell through, poor ticket sales. We did open for Dark Funeral in LA... that was a cool show.

DMM MAGAZINE:   the band got many requests to record tribute CD's -compilations... what ones did you do?
NOCTUARY:Metallica-Leper Messiah, WASP-Hellion, Venom-Die Hard, Motorhead-Iron Fist

DMM MAGAZINE:   How is your Deal going with lost Disciple records? Are there any plans to add label's to the list of hordes that distribute your tunes?
NOCTUARY: The deal is good... they've been doing a lot for us in the past years, so I can't complain, much. Yeah, they're always adding new distributors all the time, so that makes things all the better.

DMM MAGAZINE:  The first thing I noted when I listened the CD is the diversity of the compositions.  The song's structures are very technical, mainly in the guitars and I feel the band uses very diversified riffs.  Do you have any favorite key's or modes?
NOCTUARY: Well, being in concert tuning... I tend to stick to E, A, and D... but sometimes I'll write in modes... For Salvation, the song, is mostly in E Lydian.

DMM MAGAZINE:  What is the Future of Black metal in america?
NOCTUARY: Death. It's oversaturated now... too many shitty bands claiming US pride when they did nothing to make the US black metal scene what it is. There will always be the originals: Krieg, Judas Iscariot, Thornspawn, Demoncy, etc. and there will always be some good bands coming out of the woodworks. But with this oversaturation, it will just eventually die out and have to rebuild itself.

DMM MAGAZINE:    "When Fires Breed Blood" - What can you speak of concerning this album?
NOCTUARY: New album... recorded back in May/June of 2000. Songs are much different from the original album... a little more complex and there's more experimentation going on with other techniques, etc.

DMM MAGAZINE:   How does it feel to you when you listen to it?
NOCTUARY: I cringe at all the mistakes, hah.

DMM MAGAZINE:  What defines a cold guitar mix?
NOCTUARY: One that is below 55 degrees F.

DMM MAGAZINE:  When are we going to hear another album from Noctuary?
NOCTUARY: Probably near the end of 2001 or early 2002. The new songs are coming out pretty good, so I can't wait to get these recorded.

DMM MAGAZINE:  Thanks for the interview!  Do you have any questions for us?
NOCTUARY: Nope, can't say that I do... thanks for the interview and your athletic support.

Interview carried out and written up by Rainer, for the Burzum homepage at http://www.burzum.com/ .

And Thus Spake Varg.... (Burzum Page Interview)
Rather than wait and wait for yet another mainstream magazine interview that doesn't actually tell you anything 'new' or give you any real 'insight' into Varg himself, I decided to do an interview with him myself. The first section concerns some 'in-depth' questions that, true to form, Varg supplied with some very 'in-depth' answers. In the second section Varg answers some of the questions that Burzum fans reading this page have asked me to put to him.
This interview may be freely reproduced and distributed in it's full format only (a promise I made to Varg), on either  electronic or printed media. All I ask is that the Burzum Homepage and myself are credited with either a hyperlink or the URL :http://www.burzum.com/ in the case of printed matter.
Some of the ideas presented here I agree with, some I strongly disagree with. I'll leave you to reach your own conclusions. My personal views are already documented elsewhere on this page, so now it's time to let Varg do the talking:
1)
These days it seems a lot of people see you simply as a ‘racist’. However, having read a great deal of your works it would seem to me that you in fact are attempting to promote ‘cultural survivalism’ - that is to say, to prevent further dilution of the true Nordic religion following the ‘spiritual death’ of Judeo-Christianity’s arrival. Am I right?
Dilution of the Norse-Germanic philosophy of life - or religion if you like - is one thing, but just a part of the reason for my racism. It is not just our philosophy of life that is threatened, but our very race as well; our culture, the distinctive characteristics of our race and our peoples (i.e. the European peoples). In short everything that is ours. The spiritual Black Death (i.e. Judeo-Christianity) is a threat to our spiritual life and to our mental health. When this plague has destroyed our Germanic spirit the way is open for the destruction of the rest of our race. Not that they intend to murder every single one of us, but they intend to murder our race through interbreeding and degeneration. The latter they do with unhealthy lifestyle and through forcing "humanistic" views unto everybody. An example is slogans like "every human is valuable", or "everybody’s value is the same". Of course modern medicine has a role in this as well. Sick and degenerated individuals are kept alive at any cost, there is no "natural selection" like it used to be, or any race hygiene to see to it that our race do not degenerate.
Our society is built up so that the immoral thrive, so that the cynical thrive, so that the greedy thrive. That is the "strongest" in our society. You have to be willing to lie, cheat, backstab others, pretend, and so on to get anywhere in our world. This leads to what they call "individualism". Also everything is measured after it’s value in hard cash.
Individualism is all fine, however only one type of individualism. The "advanced" world we live in have a tendency so over-simplify everything - of course because of their "humanism" and their "humanistic" and "caring" will to make comprehensible for the retarded idiots they breed as well. Instead of saying "positive individualism" (i.e. artistic creativity, courage, initiative, the ability to lead others, inventiveness etc) and "negative individualism" (i.e. egoism, the strong desire to only care for what is best for oneself etc) they just say individualism. This means that they let negative individualism thrive as well, if not exclusively.
All this is interconnected; the Judeo-Christianity, Capitalism, Humanism, Communism, and so on. All these things just play a part in the great game of the Zionists.
The only real threat against their regime is our Aryan (i. e. European) race. It is the pureness of our blood that resist the Zionist forces. I talk so much about our Gods and Goddesses simply because our pure nature is a result of them, and they are the result of our pure blood. Our philosophies have their origin in us, our nature, and to eradicate them they need to destroy they pureness of our blood. That as well is interconnected; out pure blood and our philosophies, our culture, our nature, our cosmology; everything that is ours. The pureness of our race is the last obstacle in the way for Zionist world- hegemony. Dilution of our 'religion' is thus the same as dilution of our blood, to put it that way, l"nis means that fighting for OUR culture, OUR philosophies, OUR art and so on, is the same as fighting for OUR race, OUR blood and OUR peoples! A flower need its leaves to survive, just as much as it needs its flowers, its stalk and its roots. Now we have nothing but our roots left, and to save them is alpha-omega to our survival. It’s racism alright, but so what? I care more for the survival of nature - be that human or Mother Earth’s nature - than I care about what some mentally confused, traitor, Judeo-Christian Capitalist pigs say about me.

2)
To me it seems that Judeo-Christianity has always stolen from the Pagan/Heathen religions, in addition to the obvious ‘spiritual death’ that you refer to, also in quite literal terms. To give an example of what I mean, let’s consider ‘Christmas’. It seems unlikely that Christ was born at Christmas - shepherds would not have their flock out in mid-winter, even in Palestine; the Romans would never order a census in winter, the hardest time of year to travel. The ‘12 days of Christmas’ are most likely nothing to do with the ‘wise old men’ arriving at Bethlehem - the Roman celebrations around the winter solstice (21st December), starting with the Sol Invictus festival lasted 12 days. ‘Santa Claus’ is another interesting part of it. How did ‘Saint Nicholas’ (who lived in Turkey) end up in the North Pole with a sledge of reindeer? Most likely this is in fact based around Odin, who gave to the poor and rode across the sky in Norse myth. Or maybe Freyja, who was supposed to spend the 12 days after winter solstice driving a chariot pulled by stags, giving presents to the good and punishing the bad. Either way, it seems to me Judeo-Christianity has tried hard to integrate Pagan ideals into their religion; when Pagan traditions proved too hard to break, they simply stole them.. Is this just one example of many? And, extending the question a bit, do you think that to some degree the Pagan/Heathen religion has survived preserved in elements of Judeo-Christianity? Clearly some things were too strong for Christianity to break, and so traditions were simply ‘absorbed’ into the Christian mythos. If so, can these Pagan elements one day be ‘extracted’ back again from Judeo-Christianity?
I understand that you call the Yule celebration "Christmas" in English speaking territories. In Scandinavia we call it Jul (Norse: "Wheel") and in Germany it’s called 'Weihnachten' (meaning 'the night of initiation'). Also "Santa Claus" is called 'Julenisse' (roughly translated 'Yule-goblin' <although Goblin in this context is more like a 'Fairy' >) in Scandinavia and Weihnachtsmann ('initiation-night-man, directly translated) in Germany.
It is only the last twenty-thirty years that the true meaning of Yule has been more or less forgotten in Scandinavia. Some very few people (about 4% according to surveys) go to church on the Yule-day, and some people do celebrate "Christ’s birth", but the majority don't. There is NOTHING in our celebration that is alien (i. e. Judeo-Christian). Yule derives from Saxon and it means Wheel, and that is short for Sunwheel (i. e. the Swastika). The tree is a symbol of Yggdrasil, the finery hanged in the tree are symbols of sacrifice to the Gods, we eat pig to honour Freyr, we sing the Yule in to call upon the dead (as Yule is a feast for the dead as well), we have food we do not eat before after the Yule-celebration is over because the dead is supposed to take what they want first (and then we can eat what is left), the so-called "Santa Claus" is Heimdall (and not Wotan) that come to visit his children (as you might know he was sent by Wotan to the humans to improve them, and we are thus his children) and bring gifts to those who deserve them. He lives "on the north pole" simply bacause that is the point where the wall between the spirit world and the world we live in is easiest to cross. Yule is also the time of initiation into the Asgardsarmy (Åsgardsreien). It is a Sunfeast, when we celebrate that the Sun is coming back (as you might know the winter in Scandinavia is pretty dark and "Sunless").
Judeo-Christianity never managed to 'absorb' this Heathen tradition, it even worked the other way around, and now even non-Germanic peoples celebrate Yule, because of Judeo-Christianity (ironically). They have managed to exchange the Spear in the top of the Tree with a Star, but that happened only some years ago, when the Star with electric light came on the market. When my parents were young for instance, they had Spear-points in the top of the tree everywhere instead. Symbolizing Wotan’s Spear of course.
They do their best alright, to "christianize" our traditions, but it’s not very successful - that is in Scandinavia though. We still celebrate Yule, and not "Christmas", we still have Heimdall and not some "Santa Claus". Needless to say, the Scandinavian and German peoples managed to keep their tradition that good, compared to other parts of Europa, simply because we are racially far more pure. This is the why they try so hard to destroy the pureness of our blood, simply because they never succeeded in Christianizing us. We are still resisting vehemently, both in Scandinavia and in Germany. After a thousand years now they have changed tactics, and are now attacking our blood, to break the resistance.
So, to answer Your question; it is not Judeo-Christianity that have absorbed our traditions, they simply never managed to ruin and destroy our traditions. They did that with the native American culture, with the African cultures, and with many other cultures, but they never managed to do that with us. We are too strong for them. Or better; our nature and blood is too pure for them. Needless to say, we have to keep it that way, and make sure they do not destroy the pureness of our blood!. As long as we stay noble we will never perish. Nobility is in the pureness of the blood.

3)
Although you’re no longer a ‘black metal musician’ as such, Burzum still is probably the biggest band in the scene and you still have a lot of support from fans in black metal. Do you still acknowledge that support, even if not a black metaller yourself anymore? (Though I realise you were never a ‘black metaller’ in the traditional sense anyway).
It depends on what you mean with "Black Metallers", and what you mean with "support" for that sake. There is a lot of "support" out there that would be better called "spreading mendacious gossip". I could be well without that. When people start to present their own speculations as "facts", not least on the internet, I do no longer call it "support", although it is often meant to be support. Real support is great whoever it comes from, although there are groups other than "black metallers" I would prefer to receive support from.
4)
Obviously the question most readers will want to know is: when can we expect more music from you? Recently you mentioned the possibility of a new Burzum trilogy.. You also stated that ‘Hlidskjalf’ will be the next Burzum album - has any of it been written or recorded yet? Do you have keyboard, computer or recording equipment in your cell at the moment? If not, do you think you may be able to record anything in the near future?
I don’t know.
5)
I recently heard a rumour that you now have a guitar in your cell, although you don’t plan to use it on upcoming albums. In the past you have stated that you will no longer record any more ‘metal music’. In relation to this, you have stated that you no longer want to play guitar anymore. To me this seems a bit strange - after all, bands who share similar views to your own and who you’ve mentioned in the past (Vidkuns Venner for example) play guitar-based music. And, of course, ‘guitar-based’ need not necessarily mean ‘metal’ music. After all, surely an electronic synthesizer is no more Nordic than an electronic guitar. Thus is it possible that you might use a guitar in the way you did on the later tracks on Filosofem, given the chance?
The guitar is an European invention, just like the synthesizer. However, the music played on guitar is mostly nigger music - and that goes definitely for all metal music. I have nothing against guitars, as you might know a lot of classical music is played on guitar. If I would make any more guitar music it would be classical music. So, it has nothing (or better; little) to do with the instrument in itself.
I guess I have been a bit unclear when talking about this, until now. Anyway, what I explain above should clear things up for you. I categorize music like this; Aryan music (European classical and folkmusic, as well as some other more electronic music); Alien music with Aryan lyrics (like all these Viking-metal bands, Oi-rock and the like) and; Alien music with alien lyrics. As simple as that.
Bands like 'Vidkuns Venner', 'No Remorse' and so on, are "half-way" to the right way, and I know that in our times we might need to get people on our side one step at a time. Being used to nigger music and nigger or Jew lyrics they need to become used to the lyrics first, and then they can be introduced to real Aryan music. That’s why I can support these "half-way" to the right way bands. That is pretty much the role of old Burzum as well, to be a 'gateway to Heaven'. You become what you listen to (mentally), so I deem it very important that we promote Aryan music to our Aryan race. This as well, is a part of the struggle. This way we can save our collective mental and spiritual health as well. Instead of primitive, degenerate, subhuman mentality promoted by the nigger (pop) music today, we can educate and 'heal' our race with Aryan music, promoting. Aryan ideals like honesty, justice, honour, faithfulness, strength, courage, respect, nature awareness and so on.

6)
To what extent, if any, do you believe in life after death? Is Valhalla a physical or metaphorical perception of the afterlife? From what you have said in the past it seems to me that you consider 'Gods' as only a symbolic entity (unlike the Judeo-Christians who will blindly follow) and believe the ultimate driving force to be nature, i.e. the natural selection of the strong over the weak...
'Nature' and 'the Gods (and Goddesses)' are two sides of the same thing. The Gods are forces in nature, and with that I mean forces in our human nature as well. Which of course is just another reason to keep the blood pure, as if we destroy the pureness of our blood we also destroy our Gods and everything they stand for. All their wisdom is stored in our pure blood, and it will be lost if we interbreed with others.
The Gods are symbolic, spiritual, parts of our nature (genes), as well as being physical beings. I can give You an example of a physical manifestation of Thórr (Juppiter, Zevs, Perun etc). As You (hopefully) know Thórr is the defender of our race, he protects us from the Jotuns (i. e. the 'giants', which is a metaphor for 'uncontrollable forces of the universe' in this context). His beard is red and he have a belt that increases his strength.
Then I can ask You; what is it that protect us, on Mother Earth, from 'space debris' (asteroids and the like)? It is of course the planet of Jupiter! The planet also happen to be red and have a ring around it (the 'strengthbelt' mentioned). It is Jupiter with its ,gravity ('strength') that prevents all this debris from smashing into Mother Earth killing us. The planets and the Sun (Sun/Só1, Merkur/Loki, Venus/ Frigg , Tellus/Moder Jórd, Mars/Týr, Jupiter/Thórr, Saturn/Heimdall, Uranus/Wotan, Neptune/Njordr, Pluto/Hell) and the moons of the planets (I don’t bother writing the names of all of them here, as there's a lot and it would take to much time) are all bodies of the Gods. The Gods are namely not just one single thing, they don’t have just one being, one form, one manifestation.
Any astrologer knows that Saturn (Heimdall) is the God of the principle "You harvest what you sow" (Ut sementem feceris, ita metes <Cicero>), and that brings us back to the subject of Yule ("Christmas") and his role there, as the judge over who shall receive gifts and who shall not. Unfortunately these astrologers tend to ignore our science "as it is racial", so they lack the knowledge about this and will not be any wiser with time as long as they continue to ignore what 'we' say about this. They are not free from Judeo-Christian prejudice it seems.
Valhalla as well has many sides. I can give You another example, and quote some part from Vargsmål;
"To get to Valhalla we have to get past many guards. Wotans wolves Geri (the greedy) and Freki (demands and obstinacy), the warge hanging west of the entrance, the eagle that bend it's head above the hall. We have to build the Hall with our own weapons and armour; our spears make up the walls, our shields make up the roof and the benches are covered with our chainmails. Before we get to Valhall we have to get across two rivers as well, Thund (swallow up, 'self-solemnity') and Ifing (doubt, uncertainty) .
This means that we must defeat our own weaknesses, like our greed, our obstinacy, our many demands to others, our bestiality (the warge is hanged), our pride (the ea~lge bend his head), our 'self-solemnity', our doubt and uncertainty, and our weapons we shall use to something constructive". (quote finished).
We have to build our Valhalla with weapons, to build something new we have to destroy the old. Anyway, that’s ONE interpretation of Valhalla. One of many, all being true. They do not contradict each other. The above is of course how we must face Wotan, how we shall relate to him.
Another interpretation covers another 'theme'. When we say that the Einherjers (warriors) fight and kill each other every day, only to be reborn the day after. This simply means that we need not fear death on the battlefield, as we will be reborn again later anyway, in our race. That again of course depending on the pureness of our race. This encourages courage and bravery, and thus makes our soldiers the best.
Valhalla is also a 'Hall of Fame', a spiritual unit consisting of the dead men's spirits (parts of them live on, parts of them are reborn, and parts of them, are immortal through being remembered forever <like Hitler>) as well. Any theosophist that might read this will of course open his or her eyes when I point at the fact that there are 540 doors into Valhall, and 800 Einherjers can walk through each of them at one time. 540 multiplied by 800 equals 432.000. The secrets of Valhall are many, but then again; I am a 'terrible racist' and therefore nobody will take serious anything I say. As You know; they are not free from the society’s "moral" laws.

7)
How is prison life treating you at the moment? I hear you are working on a new book, referred to as ‘Vargsmal II", could you tell us a bit more about this? Have the authorities been attempting to hinder you from writing it as they did your first book?
I just wrote a political program for our Allgermanische Heidnische Front (Pangermanic Heathen Front) which took some time to finish, as I needed more 'accurate political knowledge' to finish it. This however is only 16 pages (A4) so I wouldn't call it a book. Prison life is treating me well. I get the time to read a lot, to write and to train, and for now that is all I need. The authorities hinder me by not letting me have a computer in my cell, so that I have to write everything by hand or on a typewriter. Right now I am working on another project, about 'the creation'. That's pretty much an interpretation of parts of our mythology, it’ll be written in Norwegian, but I will (unlike with Vargsmål) translate it into English as well and from there I guess it'll be translated into German as well. I will systemize our mythology and reveal some facts about our past that is not yet known. Firstly I'11 write the book about Ginnungagap and then later I’ll deal with the other myths and subjects. I am more or less finish with the preliminary work so it is pretty much all about getting it all down on the paper now. I must say I really love to work with this, and ironically I would probably not have had the time to do it if I had not been imprisoned.
8)
How is your daughter? I imagine it must be difficult staying in contact with your family given the present situation. Or have prison conditions improved a bit? I remember you mentioned that at one point you were completely shut off from the outside world and they even stopped letters from your mother..
My daughter is, as far as I know, fine. I got a letter from her some weeks ago, but apart from that I haven~t had any contact with her since the sumner of ninetythree. The prison conditions tend to change all the time. Now I am in Trondheim, about 500 kilometers from my hometown (i. e. my family and my friends). It's a bit irritating of course, but as we say; "strength is to ignore". Nothing lasts forever. In the meanwhile I'll educate myself - to their great despair.
9)
Is Islam a growing threat in Norway? If so, will you fight it just as you fight Christianity and Judaism? (I remember you once said you would fight anything that is alien to the true Pagan peoples).
Islam is an adversary to the Christian religions, so I say let them tear each other apart. If one of them wins or becomes too powerful we'll simply join forces with the weaker part, only to obliterate it when WE are the strongest part. Today Christianity is the strongest part, so we should not attack Islam, instead we should join forces with them and fight Judaism and Christianity together with them.
Besides, Islam is much closer to our philosophy of life than what Christianity is, after all they hail those who die in battle, they have a sense of honour and of course their view on women is far better than the Christian one. It is better with 'Allah hu akbar' in the morning seven days a week, than with church bells every Sunday .
It should be pretty needless to say though, that no alien religion can be accepted in OUR Europe, be it Islam, Judaism, or any form of Christianity (all generally referred to - by me - as 'Judeo-Christianity ').

Finally, here are the miscellaneous questions I mentioned earlier, sent in by Burzum fans:
Do you have a favourite Burzum album? - Stuart

Both yes and no: It depends on my mood. I am pretty satisfied with the HLTO (Hvis Lyset Tar Oss) album, but then again I am pretty satisfied with the DSEV (Det Som En gang Var) album as well. All in all I like the Daudi Baldrs album best, but when it comes to the old albums I think the debut is the best for 'nostalgic moments', the DSEV is the best for 'lone moments', the HLTO is the best for contemplation and ‘aggressive moments’, the Filosofem album is the best for.....certain moments (it's - for me - something like a mix between HLTO and the debut, as the tracks are from these two albums. Well, from the 'eras' of these two albums). My favourite is thus Daudi Baldrs and HLTO.
Who is the mother of your child? - Emiel
I don't want to tell her name, as she might not want that to be known, but I can tell she’s a Norwegian. She's a weird character, living in the end of some deep Fjord. She’s an agricultural college graduate/agronomist, growing most of the food they need herself, playing violin, wearing home-made clothes and generally being weird (of course mostly in a positive way).
What bands do you listen to these days? - Travis
None actually. We are not allowed to listen to music here, and we are not even allowed to have a walk-man here, so it is not very easy to listen to any music really. If I could listen to music though, I would listen to - apart from folk music and classical music bands like 'Das Ich ', 'Goethes Erben', old 'Kraftwerk', and some other electronic music I guess.
Do you love nature? - Anna
Yes, absolutely It is Mother Earth's green nature that provide us with everything We need to survive, evolve and fulfil our tasks. We are ourselves a part of nature, just like the trees of the forest and the air we breath, and it is our duty to see to it that these parts of nature are clean and healthy as well. The Capitalist exploitation of Mother Earth that goes on as we speak is horrendous and it must be stopped as soon as possible, by all means. This as well is a part of our struggle for nature, both our Aryan nature and the nature we live in. Aesthetically nature is beautiful as well, just like our Aryan race. There is nothing of more value to us than nature, both our Aryan nature and Nature, and besides love we must learn respect and admiration for this. Heil Mother Earth!
Why did you decide to get a ‘skinhead’ look? - Heide
That's just how I looked at the time the TV news team got there. We could turn the question around however, and ask "why did you let your hair grow"? as I was a skinhead in my mid teens as well. As for the 'skinhead' look today, or better last year and the year before that, I like it, besides it was nice to make it clear to some people where I was on the ‘political scale'. For some strange reason people seems to understand such things only if you have the haircut that matches their picture of how a person with that certain political ideology look. Now I have a normal short hair, which 'of course' the newspapers refer to as a ‘Hitler-Jugend' haircut, and generally I don't pay all that much attention to such things as haircut. It’s pretty irrelevant. Short hair is good in battle. It’s practical and easy to clean, which after all has something to say when we aren’t allowed to shower 'all that much' in Prison.
What make of guitar do/did you play? - Bjorn
I have a Westone guitar, and I have had that Guitar all the time, since 1987 when I started to play. It's just some old, cheap, and according to all 'experts' crappy guitar, but it has worked fine for me and my needs (so far). It's a bit rusty and definitely not a pretty sight, but that’s not very important.
Are you still friends with Immortal? - ‘Dragonulv’
Well, well, well. I haven’t talked to them for some years now, or been in contact with them in any other way. They have their interests (inebriation and music) and I have mine, and our paths does not cross in any context, so..
Ok, that'll be all. Heil Wotan!

Dark Forlorn Abyss Productions
555 N. Pollard St., #40
Arlington, VA 22203

BONDSERVNT: We're here with  Adhab Al-Farhan of the one man band

Winged serpent master.

WSM: Yes.

BONDSERVNT: Do you have anything to say to start things off..?
WSM: I'd like to say to all the metalheads in the world to check out my debut        CD, "Enemy Of God".

BONDSERVNT: What is the main theme of this new CD
WSM: To kill all that is holy!

BONDSERVNT: Simply that? Are there any ancient themes presented?
WSM: there are some on some of the songs.

BONDSERVNT: Can you describe in more detail some old lore that you reflect in your material?
WSM: Well, the lore is just about killing god and his followers!

BONDSERVNT: Many times members of black metal bands have pagan themes and ideas... can you tell us a little about your feelings on this subject?
WSM: I don't have a problem with any bands as long as they keep it original and unholy at the same time. anybody can believe in anything they want, just as long as they don't get me involved if it's bullshit.

BONDSERVNT: You list Enemy of God as a MCD what features are presented as being multimedia?
WSM: On my ad/flyer, I did mention it as an "MCD," but it's really a full length CD which has a total running time of 40 minutes and 14 songs, 4 of which are instrumental and 10 are pure holocaust!

BONDSERVNT: How long have you been playing an instrument?
I understand you are quite young? 18 at this point correct?
WSM: I'm 17, I'll be turning 18 this May though! I've been playing guitar since I was 8 or 9. I started playing the bass just October of 2000. It was easy. it's like a guitar with only 4 strings! I've also been playing the keyboards for just a short amount of time. I started playing on May of 2000 (I got it for my birthday!)

BONDSERVNT: What kind of equipment do you use to produce your music? Is it a digital process? Can you list your instruments by brand?
WSM: I use a b.c. rich warlock guitar, a peavey bass, a shure ax1 mic, and a drum machine!

BONDSERVNT: What involved you in the blackmetal scene? can you list your influences and perhaps describe why you have not been able to involve another musician in this process?
WSM: I've lived many places, you know that, right? I've always looked for a band, but nothing happened. I even put ads in Metal Maniacs' "shorts," but still nothing. There were lots of reply, but I guess I'm not meant to be in a full band, which is also great because look what I did on "Enemy Of God," it's pretty good, I guess.

BONDSERVNT: You were in California and now are in Virginia ... are you a military "brat"? (parent in the service?)
WSM: No. In California, I did a zine called "CHAOS UNDERGROUND", I interviewed great bands who are now famous I guess. Bands such as FLESHGRIND, REVELATION, ANGELKILL, etc.

BONDSERVNT: I know a little about Fleshgrind .. I'll be doing an interview with them..  Steve hooked me up.. So I owe him a little I guess?
WSM: yeah, that would be cool.

BONDSERVNT: Do you use a computer to record and mix this one man band?
WSM:: No, I use a digital 8-track recorder!

BONDSERVNT: What nationality are you? Do you feel that many people you know understand your message as a musician?
WSM: I was born in the PHILIPPINES. I'm half Filipino. My dad is from KUWAIT, so I guess I'm half Kuwaiti.

BONDSERVNT: Do you feel that many people you know understand your message as a musician?
WSM:  They don't understand at all. The only one in the family that knows what I'm doing right now is my brother. Some kids at my school know what my message is, some of them don't. Many kids I know started looking at me differently! In a bad way of course! They don't even want to say the title, "Enemy Of God"

BONDSERVNT: If I wanted a lyric sheet and a better website, am I going to be able to get one from you?
WSM: I'll send you a lyric sheet!

BONDSERVNT: Who formed Dark Forlorn Abyss productions?
WSM: I did.

BONDSERVNT: Do you burn disks locally or farm out the productions?
WSM: I burn it myself.

BONDSERVNT: You record mp3's and make industrial recordings of your
material... is it an analog process or a digital one?
WSM: I connect my CD burner to my digital recorder.

BONDSERVNT: Is your head smaller or larger than your shoe size?
WSM: Which head are you talking about?

BONDSERVNT: the smartest one... ::laughs::
WSM: Both are smart, but I use the big one!

BONDSERVNT: Well I was looking for a numbered size... that way I know
whether to buy you a hat or a thong for your feet?
WSM: Buy me a thong!

BONDSERVNT: What about your playing style... what is the ratio to your
tempo compared with a hummingbird's wingspeed?
WSM: 1OO MPH! PROBABLY MORE!

BONDSERVNT: Ratios are usually expressed in a mathematical formulae
WSM: A WHAT?

BONDSERVNT: I can see that you're not a math major@!
WSM: NO. IT'S MY TEACHER'S FAULT!

BONDSERVNT: If you were to go into a local store that specialized in
merchandise for the economically disadvantaged with a "Winged Serpent Master"
T- shirt on and someone came up to you and asked you what it means- What
would you say?
WSM: I WOULD SAY THAT IT'S A SERPENT THAT HAS WINGS AND WHO IS ALSO A MASTER!

BONDSERVNT: Then the person screams yelling for security... what happens
next?
WSM: I'LL JUST GIVE EVERYBODY A FREE CD THEN!

BONDSERVNT: So you open up a case of CD's an start passin em out... and
someone lights one on fire... What happens next?
WSM: I'LL BURN THEIR FACES OFF!  I'D BEAT THEM UP FIRST THOUGH!

BONDSERVNT: As you are shot from behind several moments later, by a well
meaning FBI agent ( the commander at the Waco show ) you see a tunnel of
light approaching... What happens next?
WSM: I'D TAKE HIS GUN AND STICK IT UP HIS ASS! AND IF I DIE, I'D KILL HIS JESUS (IF ONE EXIST)!

BONDSERVNT:     Your hand twitched slightly as he stands over your blank
expression... Then he says "Stop or I'll shoot"!  What happens next?
WSM: I'D STICK A BROOMSTICK UP HIS ASS! I'D STICK HIS DOG UP HIS ASS!

BONDSERVNT: Apparently your ghost is quite active...
WSM: YEAH, IT IS!

BONDSERVNT:      Have you covered any occult issues in your music?
WSM: NO. I THINK MOST OCCULTS ARE BULLSHIT! THEY'RE ALL MADE UP JUST LIKE ALL THE REST OF THE RELIGION!

BONDSERVNT: Your message is basically anti-life after death then?
WSM: I GUESS. I DON'T. I JUST DON'T GIVE A FUCK, I GUESS!

BONDSERVNT: You never have had any experience in life that would be
considered spiritual?
WSM: I probably had. It depends what you meant!

BONDSERVNT: Well... the main concept in my opinion besides aggression
against religion in blackmetal is usually some kind of spiritual dimension?
WSM: a dimension, Einstein?  What the hell!  What's your favorite bands?

BONDSERVNT: IMMORTAL has it's fantasy world.. I use this
as an example? And DARK FUNERAL actually worships a form of satanism... so I
look in this direction when I talk about spiritual dimensions...
WSM: Oh that! Well, my dimension is when I am like immortal, I could
go in the heavens and kill god! my lyrics on the song "TALES FROM THE
DEPTHS
", is about that! I'll send you the full length CD soon!  By the way, my band is not pure black metal! It has some black metal influences to it!

BONDSERVNT: Many people might say that you are jumping on a trend in
blackmetal here in america... what is your reply to people like these?
WSM: WINGEDSERPENT MASTER is not black metal! My vocals are not even black metal! I know how trendy black metal is, and if you've heard my full CD
you'll agree that my music is far more original than any bullshit. I loved black metal when it was real!

BONDSERVNT:      Where should I place you as a style?
WSM: Well, it doesn't really matter, as long as it's on the metal
section! the fans will have to hear it for themselves!

BONDSERVNT:     In my opinion you would not be doom or death? Explain your
stylistic choice? you were black metal in my opinion because of the vocal effects
used... and the general ambience to the work?
WSM: Death, Black, Doom, Thrash, Gothic?, etc... My music has been
compared to CELTIC FROST!

WSM:    If you think I'm black metal, it's because of the song "DEVOURED
BY NIGHT"!
BONDSERVNT: Celtic frost would be an extreme compliment... I would not go
that far...? I have much to review concerning your material... The lyric
sheet would be a great addition to aid in your dissection...
WSM:    I didn't say it, the a&r from HAMMERHEART RECORDS did! he said it's like CELTIC FROST! I should've sent you the full CD!

BONDSERVNT: Well I do not like to compare people on the basis of
comparisons like those...  My style is much different... I like to dig much deeper than to just say.. This sounds like BLANK or BLANK.
WSM: I don't like comparisons either!

BONDSERVNT: And I don't agree about that comparison...
WSM: I don't even own any CELTIC FROST album, I just have the
"TRIBUTE TO CELTIC FROST".

BONDSERVNT: I thought the vocal effect was interesting but a little too
complex... I like a much more Raw production... But I will let my readers
place you on a scale of 0-10... (I'd use 0-100 but headcrash would result ::laughs::)
WSM: ok

WSM:      Are we going to talk about my other bands?
BONDSERVNT: Not at this point.  This- is the purpose of Death Metal Maddness... to allow people  to judge a little from my humble opinions, and then add their own to the
mix. Soon people will be able to listen to mp3 of WSM on mp3.com...
WSM: ok

BONDSERVNT: Soon there will be an add your own review section...
WSM: That would be cool!

BONDSERVNT: I don't have much print space to devote to the other bands on
the compilation demo you sent me... But perhaps if you want a more
complete interview on more...  I'd need to hear more examples of your work?
WSM: ok

BONDSERVNT:  I have a limited view of Winged Serpent master as I have only 2
songs to judge... But you'll find a detailed review of the demo as soon
as I can accomplish it..
WSM: SURE!

BONDSERVNT:: Do you have a listing and text of reviews you have given from
other sources? I usually like to publish many interviews and reviews of
a single band... If you have been published in other magazines I'd like to
include those along with your interview? To allow comparison.
WSM: NOT YET! BUT I'LL TELL YOU WHO WILL BE REVIEWING MY
STUFF: ILL LITERATURE, NIGHTRITUAL.COM, ENSLAIN, ETERNAL FROST, ETC.
WSM: CURSED PRODS AND RED STREAM ARE CARRYING MY CD

BONDSERVNT: Did you see the colorization I did to the graphic you sent me?
Describe what I need to do with the other bands on the demo you sent... Describe the styles and categories I should place them in...
WSM: CURSED PRODUCTIONS DID SAY THAT MY MUSIC REMINDED
THEM OF THE EARLY GREEK BLACK METAL  SCENE! SO EVERYBODY'S GOT
THEIR OWN OPINION! AND YES, I DID LIKE THAT COLORIZATION!

WSM: MY OTHER BANDS INNER DECAY IS A DEATH/GRIND BAND AND
METANEMFROST IS NOISE!
BONDSERVNT:     Ok... I'll place them in those categories...

WSM: YOU DO Video's?
BONDSERVNT: Since you're a one man band, if you ever want to create a slide show to play graphics in a collage I can make those.. Yeah.. I do video's; for local bands.. and many others from tape to streaming video.
WSM: A SIDE SHOW BOB WHAT?

WSM: WHAT KIND OF VIDEOS? LIKE THOSE MTV CRAP?
BONDSERVNT: If you had a video of yourself or a picture I can make a
artistic interpretation and have it show as your music plays...
BONDSERVNT: MTV has little to do with what I produce...
WSM: MAYBE I CAN SEND YOU A VIDEO OF ME IN THE WOODS

BONDSERVNT:  Thanks for the interview. see you in the woods!

EVOKEN
www.evoken.com
mp3.com/evoken

We're here with Vince Verkay Of Evoken. The Man behind the drums for this Doom metal band from america.  We talked over several days with him concerning the scene... And some interesting motivations for evacuating last night's dinner.

DMMZINE: What do you think about the trend in blackmetal today with all the kids getting into it?
Evoken: It's like any genre, kids look for something more extreme and get into what the flavor of the month is.  We were all kids once being looked down on by older generations so, it has it's bad points but, also it's good points as well.

DMMZINE: I feel that doom has it's hanger's on... Are there any examples you could give for band names that have corrupted the scene?
Evoken: Corrupted?.....There's too many to even list.  I think in Doom particuarly, these crap fu*king "gothic doom bands".  They represent nothing as to what doom is, they're weak, weepy and whining shit.

DMMZINE: Well.. for my readers can you offer a partial "black list" of doom trendies?
Evoken: Hmm, Black list?.....I'll catch flack for this but to that come to mind are Anathema and Paradise Lost.  People actually think that's doom still.  They totally went to shit and just got plain weak.

DMMZINE: Compared to those you mention... What has evoken tried to keep alive in the doom scene?
Evoken: I actually saw an ad for Mental Home saying they are doom.  That I got a chuckle out of.

DMMZINE: Doom is not about slowness it's about atmosphere that keep's it's metal edge correct?
Evoken: We basically try to keep what has been lost in doom, heaviness, ominous and dark atmosphere's and something that seems to become abandoned by doom bands are the growls. Doom, is about dark and crushing sadness.  To be slow is just a minute part of it. There are a ton of so-called "Doom bands:" that play slow but are as dark as a volkswagon full of clowns.

DMMZINE: Anyone you are in contact with that you feel is true to the scene?
Evoken: I have contact with bands in this area...Craig Pillard, Ronnie Dio and Jim Roe ex from Incantation, Will from Mortician..etc..  I have contact with Jason from Disembowlemnt.

DMMZINE: I'm not really into dio.
Evoken: No Not dio the ex bass player is name ironically is Ronnie Dio.

DMMZINE: Oh... silly me!  Keep in mind we don't like "famous" bands... Mostly underground acts with a good rep. Famous bands get enough exposure as it is.
Evoken: Right....I don't know many bigger bands anyway. ::laughs::

DMMZINE: Just pass out my e mail address and tell them to say you  sent them.
our main goal is video.
Evoken: Right...

DMMZINE: I'm tired of mp3 and shit... Everyone's into that crap.
Evoken: Oh yea, anybody that can record a song in a garage has mp3's.

DMMZINE: When broadband hits you won't find me trying to become the next headbanger's ball, however.
Evoken:   ::laughs::  Hope not.

DMMZINE: I do 20k Low fidelity files in video for 2 reasons.
1) it's not enticing people to ripp off your audio.
2) it's not meant for re-distribution so it's crappy for a reason. ::laughs::
Evoken: I was at a show years ago Morbid Angel, Unleashed, Entombed and Ripping corpse. That guy Riki Rocketman or whatever his name is was there....
They chased him back to his bus.

DMMZINE: When he cut his hair and crowbar was on MTV in headbangers ball we all laughed...
Evoken: Be back in a few minutes gotta shit, yea he was a fag.

DMMZINE: No doubt Riki Rocketman is a good reason for a b m.
Evoken: ::laughs::

Finally he re- enters...
DMMZINE: I've been checking out some   "chat rooms" laughing at all the shit talking in them... computer's make for interesting talk about stupid things.
Evoken: Yea, thats why I just watch in those rooms, not worth talking in
them.

DMMZINE: It's usually a 'gay' little 15 year old talking the most lies...
Evoken: I hear ya.

DMMZINE: Sometimes I actually see intelligent talk on topic.. Then I become interested.
Evoken: Yea, that's rare though.

DMMZINE: what would you say is the key to it all.. Tone and texture of instrument? Composition? vocal tone?
Evoken: All of the above.  Without Structure a song loses any aesthetics.  Without tone and texture, the music would bring forth no atmosphere.  Without vocal tone, you lose a big element of complimenting the heaviness.

DMMZINE: that's a reason for not losing the growls... that's part of what makes it METAL. What about other vocal tones? Is that an element you are looking for in a band?
Evoken: Exactly.  Other vocal tones are a big part as well.  Disembowelment showed such a lesson with the usage of chants.  Those bring about such a transcendent part of the music.  A lost feeling, calls from the past etc....Every band I look for has a different element.  It's basically what I hear and what I feel when listening to the music that counts.  It doesn't need to incorporate every possible instrument be it vocal or what have you like a blue print for doom.

DMMZINE: I'd say that chants remind me of the feeling a person would get in a church... a "vast choir" if you wilt? That large room kind of feel...
Evoken: Right, I guess Aaron from My Dying Bride put it well.

DMMZINE: But, in this case, perhaps it's a vast room of lost souls?  How about a large group of demonic forces chanting.. has that ever been done?
Evoken: It's whatever that person feels.  It's different for everyone.

DMMZINE: I like what I hear from evoken... What are the plans to put out a new release?
Evoken: Well, right now we are working on new material.  It's in it's very early stages.  No titles or what have you.  With "quietus" out now, we are trying to balance out playing live and writing new material.

DMMZINE: How many cities is planned for tour with "quietus"?
Evoken: Nothing yet...LOL...Being a doom band doesn't actually generate a lot of interest in being asked to tour.  But, we are working on doing something for the summer.

DMMZINE: When are you guys gonna get hooked up on a tour?
Evoken: Good question, nothing is in the works our next show is a relapse shin dig going on the day before the March Metal Meltdown.

DMMZINE: So the situation with Evoken is simply a distribution deal? And no plans to tour? Isn't that the job of a good label?
Evoken: It's hard in this country to get on a tour or form your own.  Europe, it's all in sales, if you do well, you get to go, If not, well, you just keep dreaming.

DMMZINE: To get you booked to support your releases?  I'd feel that it should be the other way around.. tours would fuel sales..?
Evoken: It is but, labels have to watch their own financial situation.  If sales of a band are slow a label will not take the chance of doing so.  Tours do generate sales but, it also takes a lot of money to do so.  It actually just evens out.  This country unless your Britney Spears or Limp Dicksitt, you just claw your way by.

DMMZINE: Claw your way by...
Evoken: Yea, look at My Dying Bride.  The biggest Doom band and when they came to the US years ago, they had to travel in a van with a u-haul towed behind them.   They really got screwed and it's not too often you see a doom band with a nice big tour bus and caviar.

DMMZINE: What is your favorite song off the new album?
Evoken: Hmmm, I would have to say it's a toss up between "Embrace the Emptiness" and "Where Ghosts Fall Silent"...

DMMZINE: Can you tell me what those songs are about philosophically?
Evoken: "Embrace the Emptiness" is more about a person searching for a religion.  As he finds each religion's beliefs and and ignorant obsessive behaviors he keeps finding himself further from any "group".  So, as he searches he finds himself alas "Embracing the Emptiness".
"Where Ghosts Fall Silent".... Is about a wandering soul, caught between what we call life and what they call eternity.  Waiting for what they were promised, a return to a physical form.  Pretty simple actually.

DMMZINE: Speaking about religion... Do you think it was all the rules... or hypocrisy in the church that led you away from it?
Evoken: A little of both really.  As you grow older and watch more porn you realize how any form of religion changes it's ideas and "rules" every century it seems.  Christianity used to believe that those that were opposed to it's beliefs or worshipped another "god" was considered a waste.  They were encouraged to kill the non believer.  Obviously, these days that wouldn't go over big.  I think personally, it's just a form of obsessive behavior.  If you don't walk around a building backwards with your hat on your belt buckle and your skin flute dipped in holy water you will have bad luck or go to "hell".  Religion of any form is a joke. Muslim, Catholic, Satanism whatever it is.

DMMZINE: The destruction of culture is a big issue for hatred of Christianity... Would you say that's a big turn off as far as the liars are concerned?
Evoken: I think that really, there isn't much of a drop of in Christian belief.  It's just now with the media able to cover more of the world, you see more in the way of other religious cultures and such.

DMMZINE: The Spanish Catholics are the primary reason for the destruction of the Maya, the central American cultures and many Brazilian cultures...
Evoken: Eh, I really don't care, not to be a dick, it's just I still have to put my pants on the same way every morning and I occasionally get my dick caught in my zipper.  The Maya never figured a way out to solve those problems.

DMMZINE: That's why they were destroyed! It's the eternal zipper mystery!
I note that Evoken has finally joined mp3.com... Expect to be the first DOOM act listed on my radio station... Can you get me permission for our compilation disk?
Evoken: ::laughs::  The ole Zipper problem.   Well, I'll try and see what I can do.  I can't promise anything only because they might want you to talk to them. I hope they do give permission everything helps.

DMMZINE: It's basically an mp3.com compilation disk... Where members of mp3.com get put on a disk that works with the D.A.M. sales of each song there...
Evoken: Sounds D.A,M. good to me.  I'll contact them again.

DMMZINE: I'll be asking you to finish our little interview with a statement... I feel that we've covered a lot...
Evoken: Well, the obvious shameless promotion of go out and pick up "Quietus" that way we can somehow lead a new march into the new millennium with a Doom metal takeover.  Our next album WILL be heavier.  Thanks for the offer but, we took over the site from a last webmaster only because we are control freaks....heheheh
Thanks for the interview and the opportunity to bore you...

DMMZINE: Can you finish directly by stating your name/position / and time in the band?
Evoken: My name Vince Verkay, I am the talentless drummer.  I would say that Evoken takes up 75% of my time because I am an unemployed bum right now. The rest of my 25% is looking at porn on the net and wondering why John Paradiso sounds like Elvis.

DMMZINE:  Thanks for the interview, and by the way... In pestilence burning crushes all... listen to it at mp3.com/evoken

Hobbies: Playing in doom/death band Evoken, Listening to: Monumentum, Disembowelment, Thergothon, Winter, My Dying Bride, (old) Paradise Lost, Death/ Black/Doom Metal, any music that gives me the chills.

Due out soon!

Interview With
Lord Ahriman From Dark Funeral
Bondservnt speaks with the guitarist just a week or so after the mastering has begun,
on the Newest installment on the
D F Discography.
Lord Ahriman is also a member of the band called Wolfen Society which will be covered in
another installment of the DMM zine.

BONDSERVNT I've been trying to find you for quite a while! ( bondservnt finds Lord A mystically on the web )
Lord Ahriman:  OK, how may I help you?

BONDSERVNT:  I found a tome that lead me to thy doorway...
Lord Ahriman:  Well, I guess you were lucky then.

BONDSERVNT:  I've been trying to get some video from you for my website.. As well I have been trying to get some some video from "November to dismember" Filmed in orange county...
Lord Ahriman:  That's where I recognised your name! You're the guy who sent me those videos, right?

BONDSERVNT:  last year I sent you some video. If you want to send tape I can get the word out...
Lord Ahriman:  Well, any and all support would be much appreciated, but since I don't know how to get it  properly onto the website I will need your help. Feel free to encode them. Also, we have hired 2 guys to take care of our website. The new one will be up by the time the new album hits the daylight...

BONDSERVNT:  Your New album DIABOLIS INTERIUM is greatly looked forward to by the many minions here in America...
Lord Ahriman:  Yes, it seems like people have been waiting for this album. I'm however a bit surprised on the response we have received since we announced that we entered the studio..... Since I can't transfer PAL onto NTSC I can have an American friend mail you some tapes, he got more Dark Funeral on tape then I have. And I'm sure he could help us out here.

BONDSERVNT:  I can make Real audio format video from tape... I'd like to see Dark Funeral and Wolfen Society join mp3.com...that would be a great boost to your promotion here in america.
Lord Ahriman:  Sure, but let's do it by e-mail and let's wait a few weeks, like 2 or so. I'm trying to get a break from everything, been too hectic for me lately, so I can come back with new energy you know.  How does this Mp3.com works really? I have no idea about that and also this Napster shit....what is it?

BONDSERVNT:  Napster Rips off most artists by allowing free mp3's to be 'shared'.... they suck .  Eventually they will have a subscription model. Mp3.com PAYS THE ARTIST, from advertiser dollars... much like a radio station should.
Lord Ahriman:  I understand this Napster is some sot of search engine that combine people who are members and have mp3 to trade or something like that...

BONDSERVNT:  Yes...  On mp3.com there is an entire pay schedule for bands who become "premium artists"  It is funneled through any normal royalties channels.. I assure you.. King diamond and black metal are charted on mp3.com!!!  Borknagar .  Many on the black metal scene are joining mp3.com.
Lord Ahriman:  Well, I might have to check it out...

Lord Ahriman:  That's good. And this Napster only rip off all the artists, right?
BONDSERVNT:  Napster GIVES away entire albums.. Napster is a RIP off.

Lord Ahriman:  For free? But how's the sound quality on that?
BONDSERVNT:  44.1 khz  192 kbps full song mp3... Napster should be destroyed.
Lord Ahriman:  Indeed!

BONDSERVNT:  Mp3.com also has that kind of sound quality... and at 192 k for hi fi... and 45k for lo fi streams...  But they pay artists for listens and DL's.
Lord Ahriman:  Napster not only rips off the artists ... but also the fans, fu*king lowlifes.

BONDSERVNT:  Mp3.com is a viable source for PAID music while being FREE to the listener the advertisers in mp3.com pay the artists.
Lord Ahriman:  Ok cool. Well I have to check it out. Thanx for the recommendation!

BONDSERVNTAC/DC just joined mp3.com for the stiff upper lip tour... I want to add DF and WS to my mp3.com radio station... Which features DEATH METAL AND blackmetal greats!
Lord Ahriman:  Ok, how could that work out?

BONDSERVNT:  Would you like to take a peek at the radio station's playlist? this is all online music... streams...
Lord Ahriman:  Sure.

BONDSERVNT:  You can see that my taste is not weak... DEATH/ BLACK METAL  dark tranquility nokturnal mortum... and this kind of greatness... I want to add at least 2 songs to mp3.com for each Dark Funeral and Wolfen Society albums.. this way people can hear the full songs... and then can look for your CD to purchase...
Lord Ahriman:  That's good. I will speak to our record label about this. They might now more about this kind of things then I do. But you have yet to experience the new Dark Funeral...  It literally destroys all in it's path and is definitely not for the weak hearted, trust me!

BONDSERVNT:  I have found that record labels often are "too busy" in some cases to fully promote bands on some fronts...
Lord Ahriman:  It's an interesting playlist you have here. Although there's many bands I've never heard of...

BONDSERVNT:  I have contacted them many times... and they seem not to be interested... But AMORPHIS has made 7 thousand on several occasions on mp3.com That's 7 k on just downloading songs...
Lord Ahriman:  All labels have things they lack of, no label is perfect. But then again, right now I'm so fucking fed up on the music industry. Always lots of shit when you're about to release a new album, and I hate it!

BONDSERVNT:  The licensing deal for simply putting 2 full songs on mp3.com is really pretty good for a major band like you lord..
Lord Ahriman:  Major, well I wouldn't call us a major band....Ha that's crazy!
(Editor's note : How did you know the truth about me lord? I am crazy!)

BONDSERVNT:  And I wanted to put your major classics on.. to let the un informed here in america to be able to listen to you.. But you are so well known here in the american BLACK METAL SCENE!!!! As much as Emperor.. or Satyricon!!! As much as ZYKLON... and the many other Above ground acts we are beginning to see... Ave fellow Satanists and Metal brothers! You may not know it yet... but you are so popular here in America... Many people want to see ton's more of you here!
Lord Ahriman:  Well, that might explain a bit why I start hateing the business around the band more and more.....We will be back touring on the new album and we will also do a killer stage show this time around. That's the plan anyway, we want to do something really sick and brutal... Just to please our own wicked lusts....and to give the audience an experience for life!

BONDSERVNT:  You will have the pig's heads? (Usually DF has pig's heads on spikes on either side of the stage.)
Lord Ahriman:  Yes, on as many shows as we can... Sometimes it's a pain in the ass to get hold of some, some venues also refuse to let us use them etc...we’ll see…

BONDSERVNT:  How has the studio been ? the cutting room been giving you the sound you need?
Lord Ahriman:  We didn't have to do much in cutting room, the production was killer as it came directly from the studio, but we added the brilliance on the sound.

BONDSERVNT:  "The arrival of Satan's empire"... could you send a mp3 on over... I was thinking it would be cool to add it to my magazine's radio station?  This way when I publish my interview... I'll simply let people hear you... They will buy the disk!
Lord Ahriman:  Before I can do anything like this I have to speak with our label. There's also other stuff we need to talk to them about. We will have a meeting next week.......

BONDSERVNT:  "An apprentice of satan"... Is this a grand re mix on the new upcoming album?
Lord Ahriman:  It's a total new recording of the song. What differ from the previous version that was featured on the “Teach Children To Worship Satan” Ep is the production but also that we have worked a bit more with the bass on this recording. It gave the songs a total new approach.

BONDSERVNT:  The track list for the new album puts you in at a little over 30 minutes... is this the running time planed? do you envision putting some video on the disk for those with a computer?
Lord Ahriman:  When we came to the studio we decided to do an album somewhere in between 30-34 min. We ended up with about 36.5 minutes so we did a pretty good job I think.

BONDSERVNT:  Can you talk a little about what "hail murder" is all about?
Lord Ahriman:  In short..... it's basically about hailing the one who kills the Christians.

BONDSERVNT:  How about the mighty "Goddess of Sodomy" this seems to be the longest track on the new album...?
Lord Ahriman:  It's the one and only "slow" song on this album. Lyrically the songs is all about the pleasure of pain. It's has a sort of mix between occultism and S/M, which is pretty much the overall topic on DIABOLIS INTERIUM.

BONDSERVNT:  Is there a special guitar in your arsenal of weapons in the war? We'd like to know your favorite key or mode if you have one?
Lord Ahriman:  Don't really understand what you mean?

BONDSERVNT:  In your guitars... do you have a favorite model? Do you like to play in a certain tuning of the instrument? Say perhaps A... or C... for the tonic note?
Lord Ahriman:  I only play on BC Rich "Warlock"!!! and uses Seymour Duncan humbuckers, the Live Metal Wire.

BONDSERVNT:  When you tune the guitar what is it mostly tuned to?
Lord Ahriman:  Don't ask me about tuning...ha. I can play the guitar but that's it.....Anyhow, we tune to D sharp I believe, but I'm not sure, it's a half step down anyway.

BONDSERVNT:  My friend on the band "blokhed" plays BC rich! That rules! D # is cool... I like to tune to C# natural... on the bass...
Lord AhrimanWolfen Society is C sharp I believe.

BONDSERVNT:  I usually play c# locrian...
Lord Ahriman:  Which is very low tuned compared to Dark Funeral.

BONDSERVNT:  Or Phrygian... These are my most evil keys!
Lord Ahriman:  As I said, I really don't know much about those kind of things, technical stuff you know. I play the notes I feel sounds the best, what they are called etc I don't know and I relaly don’t care.

BONDSERVNT:  I'm trying to get a friend of mine to play an actual pipe organ on some of my tunes... what do you think of actual instruments like these?
Lord Ahriman:  I'm kind of primitive in my way of creating music. At least for Dark Funeral I prefer to keep the basic back-line, but in a projects it's nice to try out different things of course. I mean a project is much about to express other feelings and to experiment with new stuff a bit, try something different for once.

BONDSERVNT:  Do you believe that Black Metal in it's most Raw and KULT forms are watered down when people add technical computerized music?
Lord Ahriman:  Oh yes, but it doesn't mean that you have to keep on getting as weak and shitty production as possible, just to try and get it sound old school, that's ridiculous. When we enter the studio we ALWAYS strive to get the most suitable sound for the music, but also the most powerful production as possible. Even if you have a killer production it can still sound brutal as fuck.
BONDSERVNT:  True... I hate it when people call shitty productions Raw... that's not my opinion of good Black Metal.

BONDSERVNT:  Do you have any opinions to share on MAYHEM's latest release?
Lord Ahriman:  Not really. I have only listened to it one time and it's really hard to make up an opinion by just one listening.

BONDSERVNT:  Is there any band that you have listened to during production on this latest release?  Something that might have brought back some hate..  or perhaps inspired you.. ?
Lord Ahriman:  When writing music I mainly follow my own inner feelings and instincts. I hardly ever get inspired by any bands in that way so I feel like I would like to do achieve the same kind of feel as them. But as a sound reference we used the new Rammstein-Mutter (we got the promo while we were in the studio). It may sound weird to you, but that production is truly powerful so we felt it was the best choice to use as a sound reference.

BONDSERVNT:  I really liked the latest IMMORTAL... it is considered a masterpiece ... can you say that DIABOLIS INTERIUM will sound 'cutting edge'...?
Lord Ahriman:  We entered the studio with the intention to get a totally new sound/production on this album. Make it better and more powerful then any other BM release. So this made us look on other type of music genres. And when we heard the production of the new Rammstein we felt it would be the best album to use as a sound model. I‘m not saying that we wanted to rip of their sound totally, only try and get the same power and crystal clear production as it has. Even though I can assure you the guitar sound and overall production on DIABOLIS INTERIUM is the most extreme and brutal sound we've ever had on any of our albums. What do you mean by "cutting edge btw?

BONDSERVNT:  It's a basic Pun on the name of the studio  :: laughs:: "but I want to know your opinion of the recording as it's going so far?  It's interesting to note that you have looked to some of Ramstein's production as a sound model...
Lord Ahriman:  Even though I can assure you the the guitar sound etc on DIABOLIS INTERIUM is the most extreme and brutal sound we've ever had on any of our albums.

BONDSERVNT:  I'll be looking forward to destroying my apartment listening to it...!  I can become quite into breaking things with my head...
Lord Ahriman:  Hell yeah, it does not only have the most powerful production as of yet, it's also our most genuine and extreme creation so far......
BONDSERVNT:  It inspires me to use bandages... And sometimes I even like to eat a chicken...

Lord Ahriman:  We hope to be able to do a full-scheduled US tour for this album. We are already discussing tours with a few booking agencies, but before we can confirm any dates we need to get a release date for the new album, but also decide what North American Label we shall work with on this album.

BONDSERVNT :You've answered many questions tonight... it's 2:16 am here in California... and this phone call is HELLA cheap..Can you tell me what time it is there in your area? ( the zombies are coming out here) I sit in a black sky... is the sun out?
Lord Ahriman:  It's 11.49am
BONDSERVNT:  Have a nice lunch while I drink my last beer... it's past time here to buy alcohol...!!!!
Lord Ahriman:  Thanx. Nice talking to you and I guess we'll speka again shortly. Hail Satan!

BONDSERVNT:  You've answered over 50 short questions... this will go as said... directly..
Lord Ahriman:  Oh......hahaha Cool, well If you would have given me the chance to do it by e-mail I would have been able to give you more detailed answers.

BONDSERVNT:  AVE satanas! _|_
Lord Ahriman:  Hail Satan!

dates, tours etc as soon as we know more ourselves.

Right now, we are working to complete the layout. It's currently being

NEW SWEDISH DEATH-SQUAD
This is no bullshit, this is the return of the glorious era of Swedish Death metal in optima forma! This appetizer for Repugnant's full-length album will appeal to all fans of old ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER and GRAVE for sure. Recorded by Fred Estby (of DISMEMBER ) in Das Boot studio, it has that ultimate Swedish sound. Includes a ripping version of CELTIC FROST's "The Usurper".

LAST RELEASE OF 2000...GET IT!
Features two classical Swedish melodic Death Metal albums by GATES OF ISHTAR; "The Dawn of Flames" and "At Dusk and Forever" on a 2-CD, with a complete new design and all songs re-mastered... Both albums are considered to be well executed Gothenborg-style Death Metal and were originally released in 1997 and 1998 and are not available anymore. The Sound is killer and in total there are five bonussongs! The price is the same as for a normal CD.

2x INFESTDEAD AVAILABLE!

This is the Death metal project by Dan Swanö and Dread, known from EDGE OF SANITY. The music is totally in the vein of DEICIDE, and no more words are needed actually. These two digipack-releases includes the albums released on Invasion Records, i.e. "Hellfuck", "Killing Christ", and "Jesusatan".
