Vertical retrace lines-replacing Q3020 does not cure problem. Replacing the (2)220k ohm resistors in the vert. circuit does not cure it either.

Tip kindly supplied by "Pro Electronics" West Palm Beach, Florida

Won't turn on and power supply looks fine

Probably someone entered the service mode and lowered the horizontal frequency. One way to turn on the set to gain access to the service mode would be to lower the line voltage. Hopefully it wasn't lowered to zero even though the set shuts off at a higher value (6-9)

Dead set

The best thing for RCA chassis is to change the eeprom. Try to get eeprom that is already programmed. This saves a lot of time, other wise you have to program the set. Make sure that you get the right eeprom because you won`t get all of the menu. Make sure you double check eeprom. You can get the setting off one that is working or go to teckweb. so double check the eeprom.

Tip kindly supplied by "John" Bloomongdale ohio

There is a lot of problems that the eeprom cause. From snowy pic audio to shinking.

OK first thing to do is resolder tuner sheild there are about 21 spots, if this helps go. Then some time you can get power up take the safety cap put another cap on top of this one will let you power up. Then get into menu write all info down, change hoz. setting to 11 this should let the set power up, remove the extra safety cap. Then make sure to change eeprom. Hope this helps some.

Tip kindly supplied by "John" Ohio

Vertical shrinkage with snowy pix intermittent.

Remove tuner shield (tuner built into main board) and resolder all ground connections.

Tip kindly supplied by "Ron's Electronics" Whitefield, ME

All CTC175 Series

Vertical foldover, shutdown, loss of tuning and/or audio and generally all other strange symtoms.

Remove lower tuner shield & resolder all major connections. Double check your soldering. Make sure you have good solder joints, do the same with shield.

If you still have problems change eeprom. If it's not fixed yet start trouble shooting.

Tip kindly supplied by "Danny H. Phillips" VCR Repair Plus Royston,GA

CTC175-CTC178

Lots bad pic. dead, audio shinks

Exercise extreme caution while testing this and any chassis. Usually the High Voltage Splitter (Focus Divider network). Shorts internally. There are two wires going to the second anode (Discharge HV First!!) Unplug each wire from each other and hook up HV probe to the HV lead, not the Focus anode, Then plug ac into wall and try. TV tries to start, dies, tries it again etc.

There's some kind of short in the main power consumers. Usually this is the horizontal transistor (BU20x or 2SD350) or the cascade or the line traformer.

Simply replace it. If it's the transistor, replace by a slightly heavier one :-)

It can also be a bad solder contact (cold weld). Inspect all welds of big resistors and coils.

ATTN TECHS Magnavox is trying to solve their mistake. The red lens was used for the blue tube in production to save design and build costs of a dedicated blue lens. They turned the red lens 180 deg. this puts the vent/fill cap facing the chassis, I have spent hours on the phone with Phillips trying to get a good fix for the problem. They will not recommend this but it is the only true fix for now remove the blue tube and turn upside down. Replace vent cap gasket and fluid damaged pcb's. Magnavox will pay for warranty on these sets but they only pay $70.00 for a 2.5 hour job and that is for a tech that has repaired lots of them. Up to 4 hours for a tech who has not. Lets get Phillips to pay for their mistake like we did to Mitsubishi (vs series tubes) any ?

Tip kindly supplied by "William S. Arnold" Stockton, CA USA

VS-405R

Picture is weak and color is washed out.

You may have weak projection tubes. A work around I have found that works is . . . there are TWO ceramic resistors on the main pc board sitting next to each other (where the flyback transformer is mounted) they are in series with the flyback winding that supplies the voltage to the projection tubes filaments. If you jumper just one (they are in parallel with each other) you increase the voltage to the tubes and it's just like new.

This fix has worked on my Mits for over 2 years!

Tip kindly supplied by "Dave Mc Gaffney" Massillon, Ohio USA

Dead... (picture might shrink before failure)

I have found the yokes on the projection tubes fail. and arc to the tubes coating. Sometimes you can just apply shellac to windings and let them dry for a few days, other times you have to replace the yokes When they fail they usually distroy the horizontal output transistor and blow the main fuse. You can get yokes for this model as Mits does have a sub!

Looks like Magnavox is not the only company with leaky CRT'S this gem will leak fluid onto your IC401 causing severe galvanic corrosion at the pins and if the tube is not changed it will repeat same or you can try to seal with industrial grade sealant such as DOW CORNING 732 or DOW 738 lets have MITSUBISHI pay for these they are handling on a case by case basis I believe. They are possibly "gun" shy after the massive CRT problems of a few years ago. No pun intended.

General Faults

Occasional high voltage "pop" causing set to loose picture momentarilly

This problem comes up every now and again, usually it's caused by the high voltage "shield" that is also used as a heat sink for the vertical/horizontal output transistors. Best bet is to ensure that the "screen" is properly grounded to main ground.
