  Breed Description

  Also Called:
Height: The Cesky Terrier is 10-12 inches tall measured at the withers.
Weight: The Cesky Terrier weighs 13-22 lbs.
Colors: The Cesky Terrier is blue-gray or light brown in color. Brown being extremely rare.
General Appearance: The Cesky Terrier was developed to hunt small vermin and to go to ground. The Cesky Terrier is a very active and persistent dog and is tough but not rash in his battle with game. The Cesky Terrier is easy to handle and not overly aggressive. He is a solidly built little dog, full of strength and quality. The breed has substance and bone without being heavy or coarse.
Temperament: The Cesky Terrier is a pleasant dog who exhibits much less aggressiveness than other terriers and gets along well with other dogs as well as people. He is alert and friendly.
Care: The Cesky Terrier should be brushed and combed out at least two times a week to keep his coat in good shape. He does not shed, but any non-shedding type of coat will mat if not cared for properly. He needs to be trimmed (with electric clippers -- even for showing) about every 6-10 weeks. There is no stripping in this breed. Most people learn to groom their own Cesky Terriers, but it can also be done by a professional groomer.
Training: The Cesky Terrier is used in hunting various animals in Europe -- birds, rabbits, fox, and even wild boar. Most CTs in the U.S. are pets or show dogs, but the hunting instinct is still there if needed.
Activity: The Cesky Terrier is a working dog and should be exercised regularly.
Life Span: The Cesky Terrier lives about 12-15 years.
Litter Size: The Cesky Terrier averages about 4-10 puppies per litter.
Country of Origin: The Cesky Terrier originated in Czechoslovakia.
Brief History: Mr. Frantisek Horak, of the Czech Republic, crossed the Sealyham and Scottish Terrier, and kept very good records of all his breedings. There are some publications that state, or insinuate, that other breeds were used in the development, but this is not true. All Cesky Terrier owners can trace their dogs directly back to the Sealy and Scotty who started it all.
Registries: National Cesky Terrier Club (AKC-FSS)
