  Breed Description

  Also Called: Zwergschnauzer
Height: The Miniature Schnauzer's height ranges from 12-14 inches.
Weight: The Miniature Schnauzer's weight ranges from 13-15 lbs.
Colors: The Miniature Schnauzer should be salt and pepper, black and silver and solid black.
General Appearance: The Miniature Schnauzer is a robust, active dog of terrier type, resembling his larger cousin, the Standard Schnauzer, in general appearance, and of an alert, active disposition.
Temperament: The Miniature Schnauzer is an alert, spirited, friendly dog who is as much at home in a city apartment as he is in the country. He is friendly, intelligent and obedient. He should never be overaggressive or timid.
Care: The Miniature Schnauzer's wiry coat should be brushed or combed daily or it will matt. Clip out knots. Miniature Schnauzers should be clipped all over twice a year. Trim around the eyes and ears with blunt-nosed scissors and clean whiskers after meals.
Training: The Miniature Schnauzer needs a confident handler who is fair and consistent. Miniature Schnauzers have a mind of their own and need variety not repetition.
Activity: The Miniature Schnauzer needs long, brisk, daily walks and loves to play off leash.
Life Span: The Miniature Schnauzer lives about 12-14 years.
Litter Size: The Miniature Schnauzer averages about 3-6 puppies per litter.
Country of Origin: The Miniature Schnauzer originated in Germany.
Brief History: The Miniature Schnauzer was developed in Germany, probably resulting from crosses between the Standard Schnauzer and the Affenpinscher during the last decade of the 19th century. Black Spitz-type dogs and even Poodles have also been suggested as possible ancestors of the breed. The first Miniature Schnauzer was registered in Germany in 1898, but the breed did not arrive in the United States until 1924.
Registries: AKC, ANKC, CKC, FCI (Group 2), KC (GB), UKC
