JAMES YEATES was born about 1801 in Onslow County, North Carolina & was the son of Daniel & Arrilla (Williams) Yeates. His mother Arrilla died when he was an infant and his father married Martha "Patsy" Moore who became the step-mother of James and his siblings. Young James's father left the Onslow & Cumberland Co area of NC before 1810 and brought the family to Maury County, Tennessee, settling near the Duck River. Daniel was the son of Revolutionary War veteran Col. Daniel Yeates, a planter of Onslow County, NC.
After his father died during the War of 1812, James & his siblings were orphans of the court, their step-mother remarrying, deciding not to retain legal custody. Upon reaching adulthood, James moved on to Perry County, Tennessee, settling near the Tennessee River. This area later became part of Decatur County.
About 1833, James married Margaret Ann Delaney, born 21 Mar 1812 in Greene County TN. She was daughter of John & Rutha (Sherrill) Delaney, who left their farm on the Nolichucky River in Greene County, TN during the early 1820's & settled on the Tennessee River of Decatur County. Margaret's father John Delaney was the son of John Delaney Sr, a Revolutionary War veteran from the Shenandoah Valley area of southwest Virginia who had settled in Greene County, Tennessee about 1779 along with his parents, Francis & Agnes Delaney.
James Yeates died 21 Oct 1847 and was buried in Wylie Cemetery. The widowed Margaret eventually brought her children to nearby Saltillo, in northern Hardin County, very close to the Decatur County line. Her daughters Mariah Elizabeth & Martha Ann married the brothers Enoch M. & John H. Jones in 1855 and left for Arkansas, while her son John Wesley Yates & the other children remained in Tennessee, with John W. serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. The family name was somehow changed to Yates with John Wesley's official service documents. Margaret Yeates died 10 Jul 1871 and was buried in Lebanon Hill Cemetery near Saltillo.
