Our ancestors from WALES were descended from ancient Celtic tribes, the BRITONS who dominated what is now England, Lowland Scotland & Wales before the Roman invasions of the 1st Century. After the Roman Empire withdrew from the British Isles, these Celtic Britons faced conquest during the 5th and 6th centuries by Teutonic tribes led by the ANGLES & SAXONS. This led to the retreat of many of the Britons into the mountains to the west of England (present day Wales), where other Celtic kinsmen had previously settled.
The Anglo-Saxons called the Celts "wealas," which in their language meant "foreigners." Over time this term evolved into the English words Wales and the Welsh. The Welsh defended their land against the Anglo/Saxons and challenged their authority. Wales was composed of several separate kingdoms each traditionally ruled by its own dynasty.
After the NORMAN Conquest of England during the 11th Century, the new rulers claimed those kingdoms in Wales as part of their empire. However, the Welsh, as they had done with the Anglo/Saxon invasions, continued to defiantly maintain their independence.
Eventually, however, in 1536, Wales was united with England under Henry VIII, the second monarch descended from the Welsh House of Tudor. The Tudor dynasty was descended from the Welsh adventurer Owen Tudor.
Over the next few years, acts of union were passed and Wales sent representatives to the English Parliament. After the union of the two countries Wales had no effective government and Welsh laws and administration were replaced by the English. The Welsh saw this as an annexation of their country.
