Gordon Parks directs, writes, produces and composes the music for this adaptation of his own novel. A very poignant tale about a black family of the 1920's and their struggle with society. It's well constructed and acted but usually depressing. It's filmed in beautiful color and is full of symbolism and surprises making it generally worth the watch, but I didn't particularly enjoy it. The material is too mature for young children.
