Tom Hanks and Shelly Long play a yuppie couple who buy a "paradise house" only to find that it is worthless. There isn't anything in that house that doesn't need some sort of repair. So they end up spending more than their entire money stock in order to fix it up. It's somewhat of the same story line as Cary Grant's Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, but "The Money Pit" lacks charm.
