Hazen Davis
1794 -1875-
Hazen Davis was for
many years employed on the Merrimack River and Middlesex Canal as a raftman and
boatman. Stone bought in the Quincy Market in Boston was brought down by boats
through the Merrimack Canal. Freight was $2.00 a ton going south and $8.00 a ton
going north. Traces of the canal can still be found in Woburn. After leaving the
river, he settled in Manchester and owned a farm on the sight where the city
waterworks pumping station is now located. Later he went to Londonderry, then to
East Manchester, then to Hallsville, and to Auburn in 1849 where he bought a
farm that was occupied by his grandson, Richard Davis, on the Bunkerhill Rd. He
died there at the age of 80. He was a Democrat and held several town offices. He
was a soldier in the war of 1812 serving in Portsmouth and Rye Beach. Lucy, his
wife, was born in Antrim, NH and was a member of the First Congregational Church
of Manchester. (Information from Grant E. Davis)
