ALCOHOL / LIQUOR

The term Alcohol refers to alcoholic beverages, whose effects are related to their alcoholic content and to the level of alcohol in the blood resulting from their misuse.

Alcohol which is extracted from chemical compound as ethyl and hydro-carbon, is a dangerous chemical substance which triggers the central nervous system and may damage vital human organs. Like any other drug dependent, alcoholics prefer a brand of liquor that works fast, such as: gin, whisky, rhum and brandy, because of the percentage of alcohol mixture. The most common abused brand of liquor is "whisky". This is followed by "beer" or pilsen.

EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL USE

  • Gives us feeling of relaxation and loss of inhibitions
  • A sense of excitement due to the release of inhibitions
  • Motor activity, motor skills and coordination are disrupted
  • Deep intoxication cause disturbance in bodily process
  • Superficial blood vessels are dillated causing warm feeling
  • Deep intoxication can lead to "coma" or death
  • Concenciousness begins to wane causing mental duliness
  • Loss of self-contro resulting in violent behaviorl

ABUSE OF ALCOHOL / LIQUOR

Alcohol depresed the action of the central nervous system, and is not a stimulant as is frequently thought. Its action is the same as that of any other general anesthetic. Prolonged and excessive use of alcohol will result in damage to the brain with symptoms of delerium tremens, korsakoff's psychosis, and Wernicke's disease. Other physical conditions include cirrhosis of the liver, damage to the digestive system, and associative malnutrition. Small amount of alcohol can affect judgement & coordination.

FIRST AID TREATMENT

Alcohol intoxication can be treated as follows:

  • If the person is sleeping quietly, his face is of normal color, his breathing is normal for first aid treatment
  • When the person shows sign of shock, like: cold and clammy skin, rapid and irregular pulse, abnormal breathing, and is unconcious, get medical help immediately
  • Always maintain an open airway, give artificial respiration if necessary, and maintain normal body heat
  • If the victim is unconcious, place him in a "coma" position, this will allow good respiration
  • Be careful in handling intoxicated persons, since they may become violent and harm others
