Intro:
The final question I asked Daryl was about his SurferzRule project. Since there was so much to it, I decided to devote a whole page to it alone. It’s a noble project and it deserves some attention among us artistic folks (i.e. musicians AND music fans!).


E.C.: Tell me more about your 'SurferzRule' project. I’ve been to the website, but don’t quite understand it. On first read, it almost appears to be a modern version of the Beatles Apple records, at least in spirit. Can you give me a quick synopsis of what you are trying to with 'SurferzRule’?

Daryl: Well, you’ve finally hit the ‘big nerve’ in the D. Dragon, ‘reason-for being’ (on the planet...) area. It is literally IMPOSSIBLE for me to do a ‘quick synopsis’ of that concept...sorry:

Ever since the mid-eighties, when I came to the depressing conclusion that there were talents ‘out there’ that would probably NEVER BE DISCOVERED, I have been ‘sitting at the computer’, trying to figure a way for talented beings to share their gifts freely, and lucratively, with the world. I came to the conclusion that - The INTERNET IS THE KEY. I feel it just hasn’t been properly implemented via other ‘competive ‘e-entertainment sites’ that just didn’t ‘get it’ - and have since SUNK with the other .com failures. The power is certainly there to reach all on the planet - via the internet, but an effective method has not been (as yet) utilized. I believe I have developed the right ‘method’. It’s an e’portal site called SURFERZRULE.COM.

What follows is an ‘open letter’ from Daryl:

NOW: I OFFER ALL TO READ AN OPEN LETTER TO A FELLOW RECORDING ARTIST (without a recording deal): I.E: A PITCH FOR SURFERZRULE:

THIS IS AN OPEN LETTER THAT I SENT OUT - A FEW MONTHS AGO - TO A MAJOR COMPOSER/ POP-RECORDING ARTIST (PRESENTLY, [also] WITHOUT A RECORDING CONTRACT). I RECEIVED NO RESPONSE FROM THIS ARTIST, SO I WILL NOT DIVULGE THE ARTIST’S NAME: I WAS HOPING THAT THIS LETTER WOULD BE THE BEGINNINGS OF A MOVEMENT TO ATTRACT A NUMBER OF ARTISTS THAT FELT THE SAME WAY THAT I DO ABOUT TODAY’S STIFLING STATE OF THE MUSIC / RADIO INDUSTRY, BUT IT’S DIFFICULT, I GUESS, FOR ARTISTS TO FEEL THAT THEY - OR WE-ALL ARE PRESENTLY IN THE SAME BOAT THAT I HAVE TAKEN THE LIBERTY TO CHRISTEN, “THE SS. RECORDING-ARTIST-VICTIM” SHIP. (a massive, swirling, confused, ‘talent boat’ which is continuing to sink - as most of us - busily, mindlessly & hungrily surf the net - hunting for rare bits of creativity (?) )

Greetings Mr. / Ms. ERAITSM: (Ex-Recording Artist In The Same Boat)

I’m hoping this rather long e’mailing gets to you.

Let me first re-introduce myself: My name is Daryl Dragon of ‘Captain & Tennille’ Let me refresh the nostalgic part of your memory if I may. Toni (Tennille - my wife) and I met you quite a few years ago somewhere?... I forgot the occasion - hmmm...the nostalgic side of my memory just failed, sorry..

Anyway: I imagine that (like most of us ‘artists’), you’re not particularly interested in the ‘biz’ side of what’s left of the music business, but, just in case you are interested in changing the way your / our / all of our / music has been continually stifled in the past years, I believe I have a way to heal the problem.

If you think you - and perhaps a lot of others in this (same) ‘boat’ of musical stagnation - would like to hear how I believe this dilemma can be solved via the internet ... please contact me via...

Do we agree...

*) Music as we know (knew) it is not attracting a large majority of us music-lovers ‘over forty’ (or under forty, for that matter) . . to music-formatted radio stations.

*) Music-formatted radio has been reduced / changed to ‘nostalgia radio’, talk-radio, and ‘inner city’ pop music, but nowhere can be found, ‘Adult Contemporary Radio’, which (as an example - in the seventies...) allowed Frank Sinatra to continue to have a fruitful career - which included a long-standing record deal and and allowed him to continue to release new product and have ‘hits’ - even after his mainstream, ‘pop’ big-band days had long-gone by.

Sinatra had managed to carry on a successful recording career because of this viable, continuing, Adult-Contemporary (AC) radio format.

*) Record companies have been forced to (because of the limited music-radio exposure outlets) limit their artist-rosters to JUST the top selling groups and artists - usually appealing - exclusively to the younger generation. Any new or ‘established’ artist that even ‘slightly’ wanes in sales or popularity is dropped. Thus, their career abruptly ends, and they probably go back to selling burgers at McDonalds.

*) I’m sure there are other negative-music-biz points I could list, but I’m hoping you get the gist of what has happened (as far as how I ‘read it’) to the music business. It’s not really a ‘sour grapes’ position... it’s just a sad reality/ predicament that payola, greed, ‘take overs’ /mergers as well as the new problem of ‘Napster-like’ music piracy have created in the music industry - a condition which has (unfortunately) stifled so many gifted music-oriented artists on this planet:

SO: Let’s FIX this problem, rather than crying in our beer. YES...? I hope we all agree that . . once a ‘model’ of a successful / money-making internet site (e’portal) is up and working, the industry get a chance to heal itself with a new model, and then will come (back) to you /us - asking for our newly-created music - which will have proven it’s popularity via votes and monitorable ‘hits’ with a majority of music lovers - via SurferzRule.com.



ENTER: SURFERZRULE.COM

Some prerequisites needed to initially & successfully launch this concept:

a) ALL of the talented musicians / writers that we know and respect (that have insight...) will hopefully jump on board ‘SurferzRule’ to create an entirely new music-exposure medium (via the internet...) called ‘SurferRule’. They will then proudly present their newly created product, and reap the rewards of their musical efforts by selling their CD’s / MP3’s, or whatever, via links to their own websites, or via the e’commerce interactive facility available via SurferzRule.

b) A contingency: A perk which us ‘seasoned’ music-biz veterans may have to waive is: ‘Airplay-oriented Royalty Payments’ - which will probably have to be voluntarily waived, so that ‘stations’ (created by dedicated, music-lovers like us) can be created to freely play all of our great new music - without the required (and expensive) ‘music licensing’ BMI ASCAP-writers fees.

WITH THAT: Let me briefly outline SURFERZRULE.COM. Hey, it turns out this idea or entertainment portal is much more than just a ‘save (just) the music’ concept. It’s a site for discovering music, all-’round entertainers, actors, talk-show hosts, writers, prophets, gurus, comedians, film makers, freaks, you name it !!



SURFERZRULE.COM

WHAT :
An interactive, one-stop world wide site for all forms of media content and all kinds of performers, shows and stations.

HOW :
Media content and performers are divided into categories which are placed in theme-based environments that can be previewed on-demand. Amateur or professional producers can pluck content and/or performers on SurferzRule to create 30-minute shows (or longer...) or actual web-cast stations.

HOOK :
Real-time ratings monitor all content - which creates performer and user incentives. Votes for the best as well as the worst result in contests, prizes and a hierarchal "Best of Breed" chain of success that keeps the site continually fresh and suspenseful.

HOSTS :
Iconoclastic cartoon type characters host SurferzRule and assist newcomers in navigating the site. They also become notorious for interjecting their own off-beat brand of content. Think - South Park meets The Simpsons. Their "new-school" opinions and running commentary create humorous and spontaneous side-show continuity to the site.

BIG BREAK :
Amateur or professional hybrid of Producer/Program-Director creates shows or actual stations from the SurferzRule site. These shows or stations can be syndicated to other Internet sites or back-doored to traditional televison, record companies or movie studios.

REVENUES :
Income stream is derived from advertising, e-commerce, and content exhibition fees. Additional revenues come from percentages of performer or producer revenues; including product sales, talent deals, and licenses or sale to outside vendors, studios, labels, or networks.

In Closing: Mr., Ms., “ERAITSM”, (or ‘Ex-Recording Artist In The Same Boat: I’ve been developing / envisioning this concept since the late eighties - way before the internet took hold. I was (until this e’mailng to you...) ‘pitching’ this concept to ‘industry’ folks, rather than talent like yourself. As you’re probably aware, the ‘.com’ industry took a major DIVE awhile ago. To me, this is even a BETTER time to introduce (to the world) a concept such as SurferzRule. (Less competition from unrealistic dreamers / or greedy venture capitalists...)

I now know that ONLY the talent will (hopefully) ‘get’ what I’m trying to convey here. Many of us have LIVED and tried to survive in this (now stifled...) music-biz world for quite awhile now. Sadly, the entire world is being starved - by the lack of exposure to new, invigorating, devinely-inspired music. This is a FACT. I believe the world’s karma is being majorly degraded with every musical note that is being written and suppressed. It is my hope that artists such as yourself can ‘pass the word’ to others in the creative arena - in regards to the vision & potential of SurferzRule, so that we can all unite and begin to fix (heal) this major problem.

BUT PLEASE... if you feel this ‘heal the world’ in the creativity department via the SurferzRule approach... a passion that I’ve had for years... is out of your ‘department’ or whatever, please just simply disregard this e’mailing. If I don’t hear from you in a couple of months, I’ll simply try to contact another artist or artists...

BELIEVE ME: I have been turned down, mis-understood, etc., for most of my life, and CERTAINLY, my expertise is NOT in explaining / pitching a concept as deep and revolutionary as SurferzRule. My only hope is that - somewhere in your spiritual ‘guidance system’, an inkling of truth may come through this e’mailing, and that perhaps (as an alternative...) you just might (also) know somebody (or a team of dedicated, computer-programming gurus) that can put the ‘SurferzRule’ pieces together - and create an ‘up and running’, SurferzRule.com - where the SURFER RULES HIS/HER INSPIRED, UNADULTERATED, ARTISTIC OUTPUT / ENTERTAINMENT - AND THUS - THE ARTIST BECOMES FREE TO CONNECT WITH THE UNIVERSE (and have an unadulterated forum to share his/her gift - to boot).
