FEATURED E-AUTHOR:

Why I took the E-Route
By: Rita Hestand

After nearly forty years, I finally become a published author. True
not all forty years were spent laboring over a computer or type-
writer, but the intention to become one were. After ten finished
books, and years of networking, reading how-to's and going to
workshops, my dreams have been realized. I'm contracted with an
e-publisher for my first book.

Why did I choose e-publishing? It's simple. I felt I had honestly
exhausted all my attempts at securing any kind of contract with a
print editor. The market is tight in print publishing, there is no
doubt. As a gambler might say, the odds are against you. Agents
are needed more than ever. As a category writer, I didn't want to
have to pay an agent too. Because the contracts are pretty iron clad
anyway and the agent isn't going to be able to do much for you
except maybe get your foot in the door.

In effect, I became discouraged with print publishers. Not that I'd
given up my love of writing. One doesn't give up such a quest
without years of struggle. I also felt my time doing this was
running out. I'm no longer a young woman with hopes and dreams.

However through e-publishing some of those hopes and dreams
have slowly become reality, through hard work, and much study.

For many years I tried it alone. Without the help of organizations
like RWA, WRW, or EPIC. I mean alone. I wrote, I submitted, it
was that simple. And I got rejected. Writing the manuscript,
following all the how to books to the letter, and querying the
editor. What followed was a mountain of rejections. Some good,
some bad.

My subject matter is sometimes taboo with the print world, I soon
realized this. My characters do not always fit the heroic image. But
my characters are as real as I can allow them to be. They live in my
head. And I as a writer, I could not compromise them.

When I read that e-publishers consider those off the wall kind of
characters and their limitations were not as grounded as the print
world, I decided to investigate.  I joined lists and I listened to
other e-published authors. I liked what I heard. Not that I believed
for a moment that it would be easy to get published here. As a matter
of fact, I had a couple of rejections here too. But I believed that my
material might fit these less rigid rules for category romance.

I guess what it boiled down to, was that I didn't want to adhere to
all those rules with my story. I mean come on, why can't the hero
be a politician. Why can't the heroine be a singer? Why can't we
break a few rules for a good book? E-publishing allows this
freedom, and I believe that new writers seek this freedom.

Plus I believe that e-publishing is the wave of the future and that
this is the direction that publishing is headed. It's a much faster
turn around in e-publishing. You have a more one on one
relationship from the get go with the editors. You don't have to
wait months into years for a rejection or a contract.

It might be a big gamble to some, but I'm a gambler. And I feel the
money will only get better as time goes on. I do believe the two
can live together in harmony, but even that might take time. It
takes all kinds of writers, and all kinds of publishers, but we can
co-exist if we try.

FEATURED E-PUBLISHER:

Susan Bodendorfer
Publisher Wordbeams

First of all I'd like to thank Glenda for offering to feature
me in her delightful newsletter.

As I write this (the middle of April), Wordbeams grand
opening is just a couple of weeks away (May 1). I'm so
excited I could just about burst!  I can't think of anything
more satisfying and enjoyable than having the opportunity
to help fine writers whose sparkling creations have been
ignored by traditional print-publishers see their works
published.

As a kid (the oldest of four) I loved to read, write, and
draw.  I started writing and illustrating my own stories as
early as I can remember.  I was also quite a little ham -
actually, I guess I still am. <g>  I would all but tie down
my friends, family, and dolls and "treat" them to endless
versions of "The Susan Show."  The Susan Show consisted
of me, using a toilet plunger as a microphone, giving
dramatic readings of the gazillion stories I would write -
complete with different voices and changes of clothes for
each character.  Today, instead of the toilet plunger, my
method of communicating is the computer.

I've been actively involved in the arts in one way or another
all of my life.  As a writer and editor for more than twenty
years, my publishing credits include a wide variety of
fiction and nonfiction subject matter.  I've also designed
and marketed my own line of greeting cards, personalized
prints, and a series of self-help audio tapes and have been a
frequent participant in juried art and craft fairs (both as an
exhibitor and judge).  I've also worked as an art director, a
graphic artist, and as an executive secretary to a mayor and
board of trustees.

Submitting my own manuscripts to print publishers has
been an eye-opening experience to say the least. Having to
wait often a year or more only to receive a two-sentence
photocopied rejection letter is frustrating and disheartening.
I knew so many other writers who were going through the
same ordeal, and had read many of their manuscripts
which, like my own, were just as good, if not better than
the books on the shelves of brick and mortar stores.

I would get the most glowing rejection letters from agents
and editors, telling me how much they loved my work, but
(oh yes, there was always that BUT) it needed to be
changed to fit in with books they considered "safe" and
"marketable."  In other words, cut out all the good stuff that
made my writing "me" and send back a mere shell of the
original.  They were always suggesting that I add "brides,
babies, and cowboys" to my books and change my quirky
characters to more traditional, familiar ones.  Also, no
foreign settings; no unusual time periods; no odd
occupations; no heroines who were middle-aged or had
figure flaws … NO, NO, NO!

Well, that's what I said in reply to their suggestions …
"No."

When I first became aware of the bright new field of
electronic publishing I was elated and knew that I wanted
to be a part of this exciting industry.  In January of 1999,
my husband (and true soul-mate) Mike and I got really
adventurous and moved clear across the country from
Chicago to Oregon.  1999 was also the year we both turned
50 (good grief!!) and celebrated our 30th wedding
anniversary.  With all those milestones and the dawning of
the year 2000 on the horizon, I decided that it was time for
me to stop all the wishing and hoping and planning for "one
day" and finally follow my dreams.  Wordbeams is the
result.

I've always been a perfectionist and pretty much a
workaholic (which comes just behind my being a
foodaholic and major chocoholic) but I've never worked so
hard in all my life!  I'm lucky if I get 5 hours of sleep a
night and when I do sleep I dream of nothing but
Wordbeams.  It's either something disastrous like my
computer crashing and my back-up system and all my disks
melting -- or something grandiose like Oprah, Rosie, Leno
and Letterman all battling to sign me and my authors for
their shows.

There has been (and still is) so very much to learn about e-
publishing and the ever changing technology.  I'm so very
thankful to all the kind-spirited individuals who were
generous enough to offer their valuable assistance and
answer my umpteen questions. A very special thanks to
Marilyn Nesbitt, owner of DiskUs, who is truly my
guardian e-angel.  Some e-pubs I contacted many months
ago never answered -- while others told me to "RTFM."
Not Marilyn.  I pestered that poor woman with questions
and she was always so patient and helpful.  Leta Nolan
Childers was also very helpful, as was Silke Juppenlatz,
owner of Dreams Unlimited.  I, in turn, have now been able
to help others who have contacted me seeking advice.
What a great feeling!  That's really what it's all about, isn't
it?

Once I made the commitment to myself to create
Wordbeams, I was determined to develop a company that
embodied all the features and qualities that were important
to me.  I certainly wasn't about to slap up a website and
hang out a cyber-shingle and accept any manuscript that
came along just so I could make money.  I've always
believed that you reap what you sow, so I wanted
Wordbeams to be something really special -- a helpful,
friendly, entertaining community of authors and readers.
We want Wordbeams to inspire and motivate and leave visitors
to our site "beaming" with a bright, positive feeling.  In other
words, a  website that does more than just sell books.

Those visiting Wordbeams during May (our grand opening
month) will see that we're putting together a cookbook of
readers' recipes. We're asking readers to send in their
favorite recipes along with a little story or memory relating
to the recipe and a bit of information about themselves and
their families.  We'll be involving our readers in many such
projects, such as a book full of stories and illustrations
submitted by readers; a book full of our readers most
inspirational/motivational events, etc.  We'll also be
presenting many special works which will have their entire
proceeds donated to charity.

I do hope you'll all stop by and visit us during our grand
opening. We've got lots of terrific grand opening specials.
I'm so proud of our very talented authors.  They really
deserve to be "discovered" by all of you.  And they're all
such terrific people, too!

Well, I guess it's time for me to drop the toilet plunger
before this wordy e-pub gets the hook!

EVA'S COOKING WITH PASSION:

By: Eva Kende

As I said in my previous column: "The two keys to the effortless
look are planning and visualizing." We had a brief look at
planning, now let's discuss visualizing. Visualizing is seeing the
finished product in your mind's eye. Seeing the table set, down to
the most minute detail, the food being prepared and placed on the
plates or on the serving platter. You imagine how each preparation
will look side by side, the effect of colors, the blending and
contrasting flavors and how you will achieve that without getting
frazzled. This can be done in your head while heading home in
heavy traffic, waiting for the elevator or listening to the
interminable Musak on the telephone waiting for a human voice to
give you your tax information.

You want to create a small drama, while you keep your cool and
pretend that it took no effort at all.

Since you are building a drama, the introduction should be simple,
but elegant. For appetizer you could choose a pink salmon mousse
on a bed of greens, a few shrimp drizzled with a pleasantly tart and
sharp sauce or sizzling escargots with garlic butter.

Salmon Mousse: Mix well drained canned salmon with I package
of gelatin dissolved in a minimum of hot water, add some
mayonnaise, season with white pepper, dill and lemon juice and
pour into a mold or suitable bowl. Un-mold for serving or use an
ice cream scoop to carve balls out of it. Serve on a bed of fresh
spinach and drizzle with more seasoned mayonnaise. Place a sprig
of fresh dill or some capers on top for garnish.

**** Excellent

Elinor Grace dies unexpectedly. This is a woman that although
elderly, had many more years of life expectancy. Why did she
suddenly die for no apparent reason? Was she murdered or did she
die of natural causes? The police are convinced that there was
nothing to the death and that Elinor just died of old age from
natural causes. Karen Grace, Elinor's granddaughter, doesn't think
so. Karen has received an anonymous call that said Elinor was
murdered. She requests the family lawyer to have the body
exhumed and an autopsy performed as one was not performed
upon Elinor prior to her burial.

Dr. Rob Craig, an independent Forensic Pathologist, has been hired
to perform the autopsy on Elinor Grace. A copy of all of her
medical records has been sent to him and he agrees something is
definitely not right here. Ms. Grace should have lived much longer.
He performs the autopsy as requested and the results confirm that
Elinor did not die of natural causes. She was poisoned with
nicotine; in the form of her rose poison. But there is no proof that
she did not ingest it voluntarily.

Michelle (Mici) Smith is the Grace family's lawyer who drew up
the paperwork to have the body exhumed and autopsied. When
Mici receives the Forensic report, she is determined that regardless
of whether or not the police reopen the case, Elinor's murderer will
be found. She tricks Dr. Craig into helping her. As they uncover
clues, they both begin to receive death threats and attempts are
made on Mici's life. The race is on to solve Elinor's murder,
prevent any more murders from happening and at the same time,
keep themselves from being another murder statistic.

Monette Michaels has yet again produced another fantastic book.
Once again she manages to capture the imagination and produce
vivid characters. Death Benefits draws you completely into the
book, making you feel as if you are there watching the drama
unfold. The book provides you with murder, suspense, thrills,
danger, excitement and at the same time includes just enough
romance to add to the unfolding story. This is definitely a book
for your personal library.
