The Tape, Beer, Hot Sauce of the Month Page - January 1998...

Hey, this will be an attempt to bring you what's new and exciting at my house whether it be music or beer or hot sauce. If I have enough time, I'll update it every month...

TAPE OF THE MONTH:

moe. - Water Street Music Hall, Rochester, NY 9/12/97

Source: Soundboard - Length: 180 minutes

Quality (Sound/Performance): 10 / 10

In the 50 and early 60's it was Miles & Coltrane, in the late 60's/early 70's it was the Dead, QMS, Cream & the ABB, in the 80's it was just the Dead, in the early 90's it was the Dead, Phish, Blues Traveler - heading towards year 2000 - it is moe., LOS, MMW and a host of others - jam bands. A group who know no concept of the 3 minute song and who love to twist song structures all over the place and think nothing of two minute solo burst. Its not everybody's cup of tea - but it certainly goes with beer and hot sauce!

This is a great show by the band moe. I saw this show and was absolutely floored by their performance. Jam bands can sometimes suffer from not being "on" and this can lead to a good show but not always an intense performance. This night was definitely an "on" night - the band was in top form and performed some of their best tunes. The highlight was a new song "Waiting for the Punchline" but the show was filled with many other greats such as Timmy Tucker, Jazz Wank and Recreational Chemistry. This is a great show and has fabulous SB -> DAT -> Analog quality - the only drawback is that it is mono. If you don't have any moe. but get into some serious jamming this might be a good show to start with...

  BEER OF THE MONTH:

HONEY LIGHT ALE

BEER RATING: 4 out of 5 glasses

This months homebrew is a Honey Light Ale. This beer is a pleasant brew but is not for the light hearted. The honey tends to make a potent beer - the alcohol content is 6.9%! The beer is strongly influenced by the Hallertaurer and Cascade hops. An excellent brew - especially as it ages. Our last bottle is in the fridge and I'll be sorry to see it go...

MUSIC HONORABLE MENTIONS...

ROBIN TROWER - Coliseum, New Haven, CT 10/18/77

Source: Soundboard - Length: 70 minutes

Quality (Sound/Performance): 10 / 10

A fantastic show by guitar great Trower. Even though he is often criticized as being a Hendrix knock-off - he is a wonderful artist and can hold a vibrato better than anyone. His sound has not been matched by many either. With such greats as Bridge of Sighs, Lady Love and some great mid period Trower songs - this is a great show. It may be available as a KBFH CD - if it is - snag it. No hiss and perfect dynamics. Except for some of the early Trower classics (SF '73, BBC '75) this is one of the best!

HOT SAUCE OF THE MONTH:

BUFALO CHIPOTLE

HOT SAUCE RATING (Heat/Flavor): 2/4 (out of 5 peppers)

Chipotle peppers are smoked gems that add great flavor and not an over abundance of heat. This is a Mexican import and has a wonderful Chipotle taste - a great addition to your refrigerator door...

SOUL COUGHING - Milkweg, Amsterdam 2/2/95

Source: Soundboard - Length: 80 minutes

Quality (Sound/Performance): 9/9

Soul Coughing is a band that is hard to categorize - a mixture of dance, funk, alternative and techno - but with live drums and acoustic bass. With some of repetitive techno/dance that's out now, Soul Coughing is a welcome breath of fresh air. Innovative but not grating - this is fun and creative with a great beat, This tape catches them on their '95 tour before they became "big" with Super Bon-Bon etc. Their music can move to subtle (True Dreams of Wichita) to brutal beat (Bus to Beelzebub). This is a great tape - it only suffers from a bit of his and flatness but their performance is right on.
