The motherboard is the single most important part of your computer. Everything plugs into the motherboard, the cpu, drives, ram, ..., everything. The main problem I have buying a pre-assembled PC is that sometimes you can't find out what MB it has. The PC may have a low price but if the MB sucks it's not a good buy. The MB determines what your system can do.

It's better to get a good MB and a slower cpu than the other way around. Check out The Motherboard Buying Guide by Darwin & Cæsar at Ars Technica, for a good introduction to Motherboards.
