Hello!
First, let me extend a big thank you to Jan Boyer, our former President. Jan has brought a lot to our group and I’m looking forward to learning the "president" ropes from her. And with that, I’m very excited to be sending this first letter as your new President!
There is already a lot of information to share with everyone. I’d also like to ask all of you, the members of the group, what you’d like to see for our group this year. Tell us when you think we should meet, what your interests are, a little about you so that we can plan together and let everyone bring Kappa back into their lives. We’ve traditionally been a small group, getting together only a few times a year. I’d like to see if we couldn’t expand a bit - grow our group and maybe even have a little more fun! I have a lot of ideas ranging from self-awareness and education to relaxation and a little bit of excitement, but I’d like to hear your thoughts, first.
We have a few celebrations this year with one of our
local Kappa sisters commemorating her 50-year award!
We will also be celebrating Founder’s Day during the
fall and doing a little Kappa Fundraising with our
friends at Current®. In our next newsletter I’ll
share the survey summary and provide the calendar of
activities so that we can plan our time together. I’d
also like to hear if any of you are interested in forming "interest groups". Perhaps
you enjoy playing Bridge, or planting gardens, or would like to form a reading circle ~~ we can do all these things!
A little about me…
I am a Kappa from Illinois Wesleyan University – Epsilon chapter. I have lived in the Crystal Lake area my entire life, which is sometimes hard to believe, but I can’t imagine living anywhere else because this area has so much to offer! I am married, with no kids yet, although we’re hoping someday soon! I am a global brand strategy manager and enjoy traveling all over the world. In my free time I enjoy tennis, scrapbooking (thanks Jan!), gardening, and much more! I have been an active member in our group since we received our charter in 1990. I can’t believe it’s already been 11 years!
I look forward to an enjoyable year and I know we will have a lot of fun! Send me email anytime at ElginCLKKG@aol.com
Loyally,
Sue Leone Moore

2nd Annual Kappa Family Get Together
Please join the Elgin Crystal Lake Kappas for our annual cookout on Saturday, June 23 beginning at 4:00pm at Jan Boyer’s house in Crystal Lake. Feel free to bring your friends and families, favorite dish to pass, and if you’d like anything other than hamburgers, bring that as well! If you’d like to indulge in some libations, make sure you BYOB, too!
Kappa @ Local Sorority Info Fair
Recently, Jan and I participated in the first sorority information fair held this April at McHenry County College. We planned the event with other local Panhellenic representatives from local alumnae groups including Tri-Sigs, Zetas, Tri-Delts, and others. We were joined by some local actives from Northern Illinois University, Iowa State, and our own Kappa Jennifer Auld who is an active from Monmouth. The event attracted a number of high school juniors and seniors (and their Moms) who were looking for information about sorority life. We are looking forward to planning another event for next year. If you would like to volunteer for the planning committee let Jan or I know ~ you’re always welcome!
Rose McGill Sharing Program
We are going to rekindle our giving through the Rose McGill Sharing program. I am awaiting information from headquarters about the Kappa that we will "adopt" this year. As in years past we will be sending her special items at the holiday season. New to the program this year is the opportunity to keep in contact with our Kappa throughout the year.
Current® Fundraising Program
Last year we successfully raised more than $300.00 from our Current® sales. We have decided to renew the program this year and should be receiving the 16-page catalogs and order forms some time in August. I am looking for everyone to sell, sell, sell and see how much we can exceed our earnings from last year.
For those of you who have been active members previously you are aware of the importance of
fundraising. This program allows us a 50% profit from everything that we sell. That’s right, half of the money we collect will be deposited right back into the Elgin CL KKG checkbook allowing us to host more programs and perhaps even build enough to begin a program for a local philanthropic charity. We will be looking into choosing our philanthropy for the current year shortly.
Our Association Website
We are awaiting approval from headquarters on our very own association website. When approved, I will include a note to everyone so that we can begin sharing information on the Web!
Province Round-up
Jan Boyer and Karen Martin (our treasurer) ventured to Champaign-Urbana earlier this spring to attend the Epsilon Province meeting. They returned well informed and ready to share their experiences. Jan also hosted a crop-session (Jan is an awesome Creative Memories® consultant!) for the ladies as well.
Some of the highlights included: learning more about the new member program, focus on Risk Management, and more. We’ll learn more from Jan and Karen at our first meeting in the fall.
I am looking forward to representing our association at next year’s Convention! As a first-time president, it’s an honor to be able to represent our group as a delegate!
Rose McGill Magazine Subscriptions
Remember that everyone can benefit from the various magazines available at great prices from the Rose McGill Magazine program. For more information visit our headquarters website at http://www.kappa.org. While you’re there, make sure to browse the site and register online (if you haven’t already). The site is packed with information that you’ll find valuable!

Meet your 2001-2002 Executive Board Members
Every year the leadership of our association has been chosen from those who are interested in providing guidance and direction for the group. Since we are looking to grow our group we are interested in building our executive board and other positions, as well. While it might seem that our lives are so busy that we couldn’t possibly add another committee or task to the list of to-dos consider the benefits you will gain from volunteering your time to our group. Each one of us possesses talents that can be shared with the group, be it organization, social, financial, management, or simply the act of caring ~ each of us in unique and expressing those qualities can be very rewarding.
Currently, we are open to learning if any of you are interested in the following positions: secretary, newsletter, programs, special interest, magazine chair, and philanthropy. Perhaps you’d like to volunteer a suggestion for a meeting topic or event, or host a meeting at your home. If so, please let us know when you complete your membership registration form.
Your current board is…

Sue Leone Moore, Epsilon
Crystal Lake, IL

Fall - Special Mailing
Dear Kappas!
I hope that everyone has had a wonderful summer! Our weather sure has been extraordinary this year. I wasn’t ever sure if I needed the umbrella or the sunscreen. We kicked off the summer with our annual get together. Jan Boyer was a gracious hostess to a small number of Kappas, including three of our local actives from Monmouth, Drake, and Iowa State University! It was a wonderful afternoon spent talking about traditions past (like Kappa songs, convention, and ritual) to more radical issues like body piercing and tattoos!.
Enclosed in this special issue you’ll find the current 2001-2002 membership directory. Please check your information and let me know if there are corrections. Also, you may notice that a few cities are no longer listed. The Kappas from Bartlett, Hanover Park and Streamwood have been invited to join the Arlington Heights association as it’s more convenient for travel.
I hope to see everyone at our first meeting on Monday, September 10. We’ll be enjoying the evening at Karen Martin’s house in Algonquin. In order to kick off a great year, we’ll get acquainted and welcome both new and returning members. I encourage those who haven’t yet sent in their membership form and support to bring it along to the meeting. It’s bound to be a night of reminiscing, fun, and laughter. Contact Karen ( nitram41@ameritech.net) to RSVP and directions. Also, as always feel free to bring along a new Kappa or offer transportation to a senior Kappa in your area.
We have an exciting year ahead and it will be nice to bring Kappa back into our
lives!
Loyally,
Sue Leone Moore

Spring Newsletter
Happy Spring!
I sure hope that all of you have enjoyed a wonderful New Year and are looking forward to the flowers budding, birds chirping, as the signs of spring begin to appear!
I’m looking forward to another year of fun and growth with our group. Officer elections were held at our February meeting. I’m pleased to say that Karen Martin will be continuing as our Treasurer. Karen has done a stupendous job for us for some time now and I’m glad to have her continuing that tradition! Becky Cortina is also staying on as our Secretary. Becky joined our group a few years ago and has been one of the most active members. Thanks to both of them for their continuing participation and support of our group! Becky has also had a busy new year, welcoming her new daughter Jordan! Congratulations Becky and family!
I am very thankful to have been chosen to continue as President. I truly enjoyed my first year and am anticipating another great year ahead!
We have a lot of fun things planned for the spring and I hope everyone will consider joining us at our activities, especially at our upcoming fund raiser -- Krispy Kreme on Saturday, April 6. You’ll find more about it in the Upcoming Activities section of the newsletter.
Have a bright and cheery spring season. I hope that I’ll see you soon!

What’s New?
Monday, March 4th is International Badge Day - the National Panhellenic Conference is asking sorority women to honor their Greek affiliations by wearing their badges -- wear your key proudly!
Initiation of College Alumnae will be proposed at 2002 Convention - the Alumna Initiate Task Force, established in 2000 has developed a selection process and criteria that would meet the high standards of membership in our Fraternity. We will be voting on this important change during convention in June.
Without alumna support, our active members miss one of the most valuable experiences of chapter life - relationships with female role models who serve as advisers. The task force found that:
- At least 50 of our 129 chapters have less than adequate advisory support
- Thirty chapters have no alumnae association nearby
- Nine of 16 provinces are struggling to find support
- At least five chapters do no have a single adviser.
To fulfill the Convention resolution, the task force investigated numerous procedures that would promote growth and recruitment of advisers, including the increasing use of long-distance advising. In addition, the task force is recommending that selective initiation of college alumnae be considered as an aid to chapters with insufficient alumna.
To be considered for membership, a woman must:
- Be a college graduate, at least 30 years of age
- Exemplify Kappa values and indicate a willingness to commit to an Advisory Board position
- Agree to completing a New Member Education Program
- Reside within a reasonable driving distance of the chapter requiring assistance
To protect the interests and integrity of the Fraternity, certain women would NOT be eligible for consideration:
- Initiates of other NPC groups
- Current House Directors of Kappa chapters
- Women whose daughters, granddaughters, or sisters are currently active in the Kappa chapter requiring assistance
- Women whose daughters, granddaughters, and sisters might the enter an NPC recruitment process within four years of their initiation into Fraternity
Women living in close proximity to a chapter in need could be nominated by alumnae associations, collegiate chapters, or individual members in good standing. The application accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the woman’s sponsor would be submitted to the
Director of Membership. The decision to initiate would require a unanimous vote of the Fraternity Council. The woman would then be initiated at the chapter she would advise or at a nearby chapter.
I will be receiving more information about this, and other proposed amendments soon. Stay tuned for more updates.
