Vieques is a Puerto Rican island, with Puerto Rico itself located towards the east of the Caribbean.
The island of Vieques is off the east coast of Puerto Rico, some 6 miles from the main island at its nearest point.
Vieques is about 21 long by 4 miles wide and covers 33,000 acres. The right third is occupied by the US Marines and the left third by the US Navy. The population is therefore contained within the middle third.
