The world of Meridian is based on partly on 16th and 17th century European colonization of the Americas. The technology of this world is slightly behind that of the time period on Earth because magic has essentially replaced the need for science. Why research chemical explosives when the arcane arts allows one to shoot fireballs from the finger tips? The human populations, ever growing in numbers, now dominate and threaten to smother what is left of the indigenous races that once flourished on the three continents of Tristad, Phoenica, and Narumi. There are nations ranging from mercantile empires fighting for every last piece of unexplored and unclaimed land to feeble confederacies trying to remain afloat despite ever encroaching opportunists. As the European nations with their unending squabbles entered a new era of global politics, so too does Meridian. Greedy empires reach out, native inhabitants take a stand against would be conquerors, and elusive deities play games of heavenly intrigue.
