Known as the Elder Futhark (The name "Futhark" is derived from the first six letters of the runic alphabet), the runes are devided into three sets of eight letters, each named after a particular Norse god. Besides divination uses, they can also be carved/written in sets, called rune scripts, and charged, worn on a piece of jewelry, or used in a spell for a particular outcome. To help with creating spells to use in conjunction with the runes, a list of runic correspondences has also been inlcuded on the page. An Elder Futhark font is also available from Curtis Clark at http://www.is.csupomona.edu/~jcclark/fonts.htmlx.

The Elder Futark

The Elder Futhark is an ancient set of Norse runes, and for the use of divination, can be painted or carved onto small stones or pieces of wood, or anything close to nature. You can do this yourself, making them more personal, or you can buy from an occult supplier, and choose from a wide variety of ready-made styles.

Rune Scripts

Rune scripts are sets of runes inscribed or painted on various objects such as paper, leaves, stones, wood, or whatever suits you. A script of protection can be carved over a doorway, tossed into a fire to banish a negative force, or you can use rune scripts in conjunction with a spell that calls for you to write something somewhere; I've found that something uncommon and archaic (such as symbols and runes) always seem to work better for magickal purposes than the mundane form of writing which we use on a daily basis. Charge the runes as you carve them, projecting your energy into them for the specific purpose written, or do whatever called for in the spell you're casting.

Writing rune scripts are something that you pretty much have to do yourself, since they are tailor-made for a very specific purpose which you create (otherwise you'd probably just be using one rune). Thus, when creating your own, it should be noted that several runes have special purposes in making runescripts that may or may not be obvious while you're trying to make them. After getting to know the Elder Futhark, many of these connections should be obvious, but until then, here are a few to get you started. The rune Is means preservation (among other definitions), and thus is a useful tool for preserving the effect of a runescript when placed at its end. To strenghten and increase the power of a script, try adding the rune Feoh at its end, since Feoh means wealth and plenty.
