Columbine School Information

Reopening Columbine High School
The district understands that the best thing for the students is to come back together and resume their school schedule. This is based on research gathered by NOVA (Nat'l Organization for Victim Assistance) who is advising the district.  The decision was made to have Columbine students on a split schedule with Chatfield students. The Columbine students will attend school in the afternoon. The Columbine teachers will be in the building on Tuesday and the students will go back to school on Thursday. The time and specific schedules are being worked out. Columbine Senior will be reopened at some point, but we don't yet know when.

Reclaiming Personal Items
We do not know when students will be able to recover their personal items. The school is still considered a criminal inverstigation site. As soon as the students are able to recover those items, they will be notified. Driver's licenses can be reissued at no cost at the Hampden and Wadsworth motor vehicle office. Students must have some kind of Columbine ID and a birth certificate.

Reclaiming Cars
Cars can be picked up in the north parking lot with proper ID and a key. Students will not be allowed in the building to get IDs or keys. If a car lot has the yellow criminal investigation tape surrounding it, the cars cannot be reclaimed at this time.

Columbine students will attend Chatfield High School which will develop a split schedule to accommodate both student bodies. Details will be posted as they become available.

Hospital Update: Condition of Victims
Three students have been released from area hospitals. One is now listed in good condition. Three students remain in critical condition. Six students are in serious condition. Four are listed as in fair condition.

Funeral Arrangements
Funeral and memorial service information will be updated as it become available in the Jeffco Communications Services Office.

Based on advice from mental health experts, we are trying to return school operations to as close to normal as possible. Counselors, social workers and schools psychologists will remain available in all buildings, to assist both students and staff as needed.

Proms scheduled from Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24, at several Jefferson County high schools (Arvada, Arvada West, Chatfield, Evergreen, Green Mountain, Pomona, Standley Lake and D'Evelyn) will be held. Weekend athletic events, with the exception of those involving Columbine High Schools, will also be held as scheduled.

Fifteen dead, twenty-seven injured in attack. As of Friday evening 14 students were still in the hospital.

Columbine High School fatalities:
William Sanders, teacher and students Cassie Bernall,. Steven Curnow, Corey DePooter, Kelly Fleming, Matthew Kechter, Daniel Mauser, Daniel Rohrbough, Rachel Scott, Isaiah Shoels, John Tomlin, Lauren Townsend, Kyle Velasquez; and the suspects Eric Harris, and Dylan Klebold.

"We have a massive crime scene," Police investigator.

Students, Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17 have been confirmed as being the shooting suspects.

The students reportedly belonged to a group who called themselves the "Trench Coat Mafia."

At 11:30 MDT the gunmen approached the building shooting and throwing explosive devices. They continued shooting as they entered the building through the cafeteria  They then entered the school hallway and then up a stairway to the school library, where the killers systematically shot students and would ultimately kill themselves. It is evident at this time that this act was planned long in advance.  Over 30 explosive devices were recovered from the scene of the assault. The explosive bombs used in the attack were of a number of different types and there are unconfirmed reports that the students rigged explosives on some of the victims bodies.  The killers vehicles also were reportedly rigged with explosives.  It is not known at this time if others were aware of the killers plans.
The police investigation continues at this time. Thursday an additional explosive device was found that consisted of a five gallon propane tank upon which BB's and nails had been taped. This was after the building had been declared free of explosives.

Within a few minutes of the start of the shooting the first Sheriff Deputies arrived. Twenty minutes from the start of the shooting the first members of the swat team arrived on the scene. One hour after the shooting began it ended.  Yet, it was not until two hours later that the Swat Teams entered the building to evacuate the students.  and an hour and a half after they entered the building that they found the bodies of the killers.  A half hour later the building was declared clear and Dr. Chris Colwell was allowed to enter the building.  Six hours later a bomb set on a timer exploded. No one is injured in this explosion.
Reports are circulating that the School district was aware of threats being made, and that the Police Department had received reports that the suspects had in the past been making and exploding pipe bombs, and had threatened to use a pipe bomb to attack a fellow student.
The members of the Trench Coat Mafia group felt that they were being picked on by individuals that they referred to as "jocks."
Reports from students indicate that they believe that  Eric Harris was the likely leader of the attack.
