She is listed as being 4. Later censuses show her with a birth year of 1879 but this must be an error. The month and day are from the family bible. The month agrees with the 1900 census. When a man by the name of Klein and his family moved into the area many years later, the Pratts living nearby made his life so miserable that he and his family moved in three days. The older Pratt members living in that area still have no use for the Kleins. Received from Sandra Evans, 506 N. Main St., Moorefield, WV. Another account of Isaac V. Pratt's death sent by Mrs. Leona Rumer Zinn, source unknown, see letter #155: "Isaac VanMeter Pratt was murdered in time of the late war on the west side of Walker's Ridge in what is now Grant Co., WV., on a private path leading from the main road, leading to Henry Hawks, and the road crossing Walker's Ridge to Isaac Groves on the 16th day of October 1864. Note*: a child by the name of Virginia was shown on the 1850 Census. No record is made of her by S.Y. Simmons on A.G. Hutter, but it seems likely that the census was correct since the time interval between children was usually no more than two years. Received from Sandra Evans, 506 N. Main St., Moorefield, WV. 26836. **************************************************************************************************************************************************** 1850 Census for Harding Co., VA ED #23, Family #762 Isaac was a shoemaker and Rachael could not read. **************************************************************************************************************************************************** [WFT Vol 55 Tree 2748] 1840 Harding Co., VA, Census shows: Pratt, Isaac Hard 137 No Twp L Copied from a record written by S. Y. Simmons, Esq. (Sanford Yokum Simmons, Hardy Co., VA., WV., surveyor), and partly take from the Pratt Family Bible by A.G. Hutter, 18 March, 1896: "Isaac Pratt was killed on Walker's Ridge, while in pursuit of his horse, by some roughs who had formed themselves into a company in the late war. He was unarmed and they took him prisoner." S.Y. Simmons says, "Soymore Baldwin was with him and was killed also. I sent for them and had them brought home and buried in Snodgrass Cemetery." According to older Pratt family members living in West Virginia a man by the name of Klein was believed to be responsible for these deaths. Another account of Isaac V. Pratt's death sent by Mrs. Leona Rumer Zinn, source unknown: "Isaac Vanmeter Pratt was murdered in the time of the late war on the west side of Walker's ridge in what is now Grant Co., West Virginia on a private path leading from the main road leading to Henry Hawks and the road crossing Walker's Ridge to Isaac Groves on the 16th Day of Oct. 1864." Isaac V. Pratt was a shoemaker. A child by the name of Virginia was shown on the 1850 census. Per information received from Mary Lou Miller, 9520 Cape Ann Place, Gaithersburg, Maryland, 20886: one of Isaac Vanmeter Pratt and Rachael's sons was a midget, and one of their daughters was very short. Notes for Rachael Jones: WFT Vol 55 Tree 2748: 1870 Hardy Co., WV (Moorefield Township) Census - page 45, #156-155 lists: Rachael Pratt 54 VA Keep House Frances M. 15 VA Isaac H. 17 VA Nancy A. 12 VA Isaac Vanmeter Pratt would have been dead by this time.

She lived to be 102 yers of age, as told by James William Price, her grandson; and according to the dates recorded in the Old Price Family Bible. This same Bible lists 9 children born to Catherine and William. (Ruby Cox Price has written that Mert Price who married Fred Spangler, Peterstown, W VA was possibly one of William and Catherine's children. However, there is no such reference in the Old Price Bible. I can recall Mert and Fred Spangler visiting my grandfather, George William Price at the old Price Family home in Rye Hollow, VA. They attended his funeral in 1950.) Ann Price has added this information about Mert Price. Her name was Myrtle "Mert" Thorn. Her mother was a Price. (Sanford Yokum Simmons - Surveyor of Hardy Co., VA / WV - his son was Sammy Simmons) and partly take from the Pratt Family bible by A. G. Hutter, March 18, 1896 - "Manlove Pratt came to his death by shouldering a log, in the town of Moorefield, WVA., in front of Dr. M.D. William's office (near Jim Mullins Hatter shop, believed to be located where the McNeal Hotel is now). Just as he got it on his shoulder a man touched it and he fell and the log lit on the side of his head. He lived but a few moments. He lived but a short distance east of the residence of Hiram Kuykendall." Hiram Kuykendall married Mary Catherine Pratt - daughter of Isaac Vanmeter Pratt; Isaac was the son of Manlove. However, according to information - Manlove died in 1821, and Hiram was not born until 1844, unless year of death is incorrect. Census records show Manlove Pratt with seven family members. He is not shown on any subsequent census records. Family tradition says the 3 Pratt brothers came from Germany -- Manlove, Isaac and Enoch. Enoch Pratt never married per family tradition. She was the daughter of 178. Christian Swartz and 179. Mary Barglebough. Notes for Albert Wilson Messick: Notes from tbmessick (http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=tbmessick&id=I1899): It is assumed that Albert Wilson was a son of George and Cecelia because George was the administrator for Albert's estate in May 1836 (Rockingham Co., VA records) However, Jennie Hott raises some questions. If Albert Willson was the son of George, his son Thomas should have named his own children after his parents and grandparents. Thomas's children included a James Albert and a Mary Ellen. None of them was Albert as a first name or Cecelia. Could Albert Willson be the son of James Messick and Mary Townsend? That would explain Thomas's Children's names as James and Mary. Hott offers no evidence or proof, just supposition and surmise. Dates for Albert are confirmed by the Jacob Oates Familybible in the possession of Alice Peters, Romney, WV Child of Albert Messick and Elizabeth Swartz is: 90. James Mann. Notes for Henry Bolton: [Croy_from_BobForan.FTW] wft 2:570 b 24 November 1741. Sailed from England to USA: Ship wrecked 1751 Census 1790 Maryland, Washington County Census 1810 Maryland, Botetourt County Joined the Continental Army Wounded at the Battle of Brandywine Robert and Mary Frances Colson <mcolson@the-cia.net> the Bolton Family book shows that on page 366 of "Passengers to America" Henry Bolton is listed as age 15 and his brother, Condrey, age 16, emigrated from the Port of London England to Maryland between 13 and 20 March 1775 on the vessel Culvert. Also, that they were labourers and being indented servants for seven years. If we used these dates from "Passengers to America", Henry would have been born c1760. And that would agree with your date of 1759 as the date of Conrad's birth. Actually, the Henry you shown as born 1741 in London could have been our Henry's father. (I show the same date for Henry's death as you do and also the same birth date for Conrad). This is just a hunch, but I am thinking Henry and Conrad's mother was a Sarah. (They both named a daughter Sarah).
Seven of Henry Sr.'s children stayed in the vicinity of their birth; seven went to Iowa; four went to TN; one to Oregon; two to Washington. His grandchildren, of course, accompanied their parents and established homes wherever their parents moved. A total of 12 families went to Iowa.
Might as well use this space to recap some of the events in Henry Bolton, Sr.'s life c 1755 Henry Bolton born (Could have been closer to 1760) 1775 Henry comes to America with brother Conrad and works on Moore horse farm c 1777 Henry enlists in American Revolution as a Loyalist 9/11/1777 Engaged in Battle of Brandywine. Was wounded Winter 1777 Spent winter (Dec 1777-June 1778) in Valley Forge 1779 Providence Township, PA Henry Bolton Amt of Tax 5.0 1783 Henry Bolton was probably released from service 1783 Henry on Fed tax rolls-Limerick Township, Philadelphia Co PA (1 cattle) & 0 negroes 8/17/1786 Henry married Catherine Chapman in Pennsylvania By 1789 Henry & Catherine had moved to Washington County, Maryland Between 1791-1793 Henry & /Catherine move to Botetourt County, VA 8/17/1798 Catherine dies 4/5/1799 Henry marries Nancy Mann in Botetourt County,VA. 1805-1807 Henry & Nancy's final move to Giles County between these two dates 7/9/1824 James M. Bolton is born (our direct ancestor) See above listing for rest of children and their dates of birth 10/16/1841 Nancy Mann Bolton dies in Giles County, VA. 11/24/1846 Henry Dies in Giles County, VA
Tradition is that Henry and Conrad were more or less high jacked and ended up in the Colonies indentured for seven years. And that George Washington (many, many Revolutionary veterans "worked" personally for Washington, it seems) stopped by the Maryland farm where Henry was in servitude and when questioned why he was not in service for his country, Henry explained. Washington then told him he could end his servitude by joining the Continental Army, which Henry did. And that he limped the rest of his life as a result of his injuries sustained at the Battle of Brandywine.
Ancestors of Robert JW Hysler http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/y/s/Johnnie-D-Hysler/GENE1-00 18.html?Welcome=1003698070 Notes for Henry Bolton, Sr.: HENRY BOLTON was born about 1760. He arrived in America with his brother Conrad in 1774 aboard the ship Calvert. Had a card showing he attended a Wesley School in England. The brothers were bound out to a man named Moore near Hagerstown, Maryland. According to later biographies of his children and grandchildren, Henry enlisted in the Continental Army during the American Revolution and was wounded at the Battle of Brandywine. Henry was listed in the 1790 census of Washington County, Maryland. He later migrated to Botetourt County, Virginia.
Henry Bolton and his brother Conrad were "kidnapped" from London in 1774 and sent to America aboard the ship Culvert. They were 14 and 15 respectively. This is family tradition. A ships log confirms their arrival at the Port of Philadelphia aboard Culvert and lists them as laborers. They are bound out to a man named Moore near Hagerstown, Maryland. Henry enlists in the Continental Army under Washington and is wounded at the Battle of Brandywine. After the war is over Henry marries Catherine Chapman (1786) and they have six children, one of whom is Elizabeth Sherry Bolton. The family migrated south into Virginia, in Botetourt County. Catherine Chapman Bolton dies in 1798 and Henry marries Nancy Mann in 1799. They have 14 children and raise the daughter of Conrad, Sarah Bolton. Henry was a member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church that Absolum was pastor of for 45 years. Henry named one of his sons, Absolum Dempsey Bolton for "Father" Dempsey. He was called Father because he was such a great missionary for the Baptists in Virginia and he organized the Valley Association of Baptists. Elizabeth and Absolum were married in 1809. They had no children, but adopted Mary Wrightsman, the daughter of Catherine Bolton (Elizabeth's sister) and Daniel Wrightsman. She is mentioned as heir in Absolum's will. He was a cabinet maker by trade. There are 8 descendants of Henry Bolton named after Absolum Cornelius Dempsey, two of which became great ministers in their own right. He must have had a great influence on this family. Two of Henry Bolton's grandsons, James Francis Bolton and George Washington Bolton went to Lopez Island in Pugent Sound and were among the first settlers in San Juan County, Washington. Henry's grandchildren were on opposite sides in the Civil War. Peter Wrightsman, a brethren minister, was a pacifist during the war. James Milton French, another grandson, raised a Confederate Regiment (7th Va.), while Thomas Berle Bolton, his cousin, was a member of the 24th Iowa Union Infantry and died in a POW camp during the war.

They had two daughters who married under age: Amily, who in 1792 married George Dooley and Sally, who in 1793 married Daniel Neal. It is possible that the Zachariah Calloway who married in Kentucky a Phebe Cleaver was also their child. Richard D. Belcher and 439. Mary Obedience Clay. Notes for Mitchell Clay: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/3412/Clay.html THE CLAY FAMILY Mitchell Clay died about 1811 on New River. On 24 April 1811, his last will and testament was returned into court and proven by oaths of Andrew Johnston, John Brown, and Henry Dillon. Mitchell and his family were buried in a little cemetery in Pearisburg, Giles County, Virginia. The farm on which the marker rests formerly belonged to Edward Cooper of Bramwell. The Celanese Corporation later acquired the land where the cemetery was located. About March or April 1985, the Celanese Corporation had the graves removed to the Birchlawn Memorial Park in Pearisburg. It was originally thought that only Mtchell Clay's grave was to be moved; however, there were 15 graves moved. Only Mitchell Clay's was marked. The old stone from Mitchell Clay's grave was given to the Giles County Chapter of the Genealogical Society and is stored in the society's building at Pearisburg. The new foot type monument, which was to be a bronze one of 72 by 32 was to be furnished by the Celanese Plan. The George Pearis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Giles County was to get the marker erected.
There is a native sandstone sculpture representing Mitchell and Phoebe (Belcher) Clay standing on the lawn of the courthouse at Princeton, Mercer County, West Virginia. The sculpture has been referred to as a "Torment in Stone." It represents Mitchell Clay and his wife in a moment of agony over the massacre of members of their family in 1783.
According to history, Mitchell Clay had settled on Clover Bottom, now the Shawnee Lake section of Mercer County, in 1775. All went well with the family until August 1783. Mitchell had harvested his crop of small grain, and wanting to get the benefit of the pasture for his cattle off the ground on which his grain crop had grown, he asked two of his sons, Bartley and Ezekiel, to build a fence round the stacks of grain, while he went to search for game.
While Mitchell Clay was out hunting, the two sons were building fences around the grain. The older daughter, along with some of the younger girls, was down at the river bank putting out the family wash. At the same time, a party of eleven Indians crept up to the edge of the field and shot Bartley Clay dead.
The girls hearing the shot ran to the house for safety. Their path to the house was directly crossing where Bartley had fallen. An Indian attempted to scalp the boy and at the same time capture Tabitha Clay. She was trying to defend the body of her dead brother and prevent the Indiana from scalping her brother. In this struggle, Tabitha was cut to pieces by the Indian with a butcher knife. The younger girls made it to the house safely.
About this time, a man named Liggon Blankenship called at the Clay cabin. Mrs. Clay begged Blankenship to shoot the savage and save the life of her daughter Tabitha. But Blankenship ran away from the scene and reported to settlers on New River that the Clay family had been murdered by the Indians.
The Indians got the scalps of Bartley and Tabitha Clay and captured Ezekiel Clay. Mrs. Clay took the bodies of Bartley and Tabitha to the house and laid them down on the bed. She took her small children and went to the home of a neighbor James Bailey, about six miles away.
When Mitchell Clay returned from his hunting trip, he discovered the bodies of his family. Thinking that all of his family had been killed or captured, he left the cabin and headed for the settlements on the New River.
A party of men under the leadership of Captain Matthew Farley went to the Clay cabin and buried the two children. They then pursued the Indian party. They caught up with the Indians in present day Boone County. Some of the Indians were killed.
The pursuit party consisted of Captain Farley, Charles Clay, Mitchell Clay, Jr., James Bailey, William Wiley, Edward Hale, Isaac Cole, Joseph Hare, John French, and Captain James Moore.
Charles Clay, brother of the two murdered children, killed an Indian who begged him in broken English not to be shot. Ezekiel Clay, the captive, was hurried away by the Indians who escaped the search party and was taken to the Indian town of Chillicothe, Ohio, where the third Clay child, Ezekiel, was burned at the stake by the savages Child of Mitchell Clay and Phoebe Belcher is: 220. Charles Hottel, born Abt. 1722 in Europe; died Unknown. He was the son of 568. Johannes (John) Hottel and 569. Margaret. He married 285. Barbara. 285. Barbara, died Unknown. Notes for Charles Hottel: Notes from "History of the Descendants of John Hottel" Charles was the oldest son of the Immigrant, John Hottel, was born in Europe about 1722, came to America with his parents when a mere boy and grew to manhood in Bucks Co., Pa. The public records show that he came to Augusta Co., Virginia (1748-49)--where he owned real estate several years in advance of his parents. He settled on a farm of 250 acres one mile west of the village of Toms Brook. Here near the buildings he and his wife were buried without proper markers and inscriptions. The major part of his life was spent in Shenandoah County. He was among the outstanding pioneers of that community and was a prosperous farmer, owning 1318 acres of land in the above county at the time of his death. The surname of his wife, BARBARA, is unknown. She preceded him to the grave. Prompted by premonitions of death as a result of being kicked by a horse, Charles made his will. The precision and painstaking care in disposing of his properties is particularly noticeable. He parcelled out land values to his sons and money values to his daughters except Magdalene. The document was written in German, and it stipulated that his son Jacob should maintain him in old age until death; therefore, he departed this life on the farm east of Maurertown. Va. The will is dated June 10. 1778, ordered to be translated in the English language and probated, Sept. 12, 1814. An abstract of the will of Charles Hottel taken from Probate records at Woodstock is as follows: 1. He speaks of having been hurt by a horse, provides for decent Christian burial, and makes bequests. 2. To John, 285 acres of land valued at 400ś, deducted 10ś in addition to the alloted sum for each and owed his brothers and sisters, 217ś, 5s. and 6 p. 3. To Jacob, 215 acres of land valued at 400ś, deducted his allotment, owed 227ś, 5s. and 6p. 4. To Joseph, 250 acres of land valued at 260ś, deducted his heritage, owed 87ś, 5s. and 6p. 5. To Solomon. 204 acres of land valued at 400ś, and 6p., deducted his allowance, owed 227ś, 5s. and 12p. 6. To Daniel, 201 acres of land valued at 300ś, deducted his allowance, owed 127ś, 5s. and 6p. 7. To Magdalene, 163 acres of land and 22ś, 14s. and 10p. equals the correct amount due her. The value of the original estate totals 1910ś for the sum of 1318 acres. Deducting the 10ś which John, the eldest, received, 1900ś was the total remaining for equal distribution. The total of the sums owed by the five brothers, as noted in the foregoing analysis, is 886ś, 9s. and 4p. Deducting from this amount due to Magdalene, leaves a remainder of 863ś, 14s. and 10p. This sum of money to be divided among the sisters, Barbara, Mary, Elizabeth, Anna and Susannah, who received no bequests of land. divided by five, their number, the result is the sum of 172ś, 14s. and 10p. for each. Children of Charles Hottel and Barbara are: 352. Elihu Messick, died Unknown in Rockingham Co, VA. He married 353. Elizabeth. 353. Elizabeth, died Unknown. Notes for Elihu Messick: I (Mike Bishop) believe these notes are from tbmessick: The Elihu Messick that was in Rockingham co is VA was not the same as Elihu Jr, son of Elihu and Margaret Titchie of Stepney Parish MD. The Elihu of Rockingham Co is something of a mystery, and no one has ever figured out who his parents were. It is surmised tha Elihu of Rockingham co was born between 1730 and 1740, first appearing in Rockingham Co in the 1810 census. Thus, descendants of Elihu 1756 are not direct descendants of Elihu 1716. I agree with these researchers. (This Elihu had his birth listed as 1756. Due to the confusion, I removed the date - MEB) There is no mention of Eliju's participation in the Revolution, (he would have been about 20 in 1776) so there is a suspicion that he and his family may have been loyalists. Elihu's cousin was named Joshua Cornwallis Mezick (b. 1778). This lends credence to the possibility. He moved to Rochingham Co prior to 1771 and live don Valley Pike or Rt. 11. John Hottel must have been still a young man at that time. Of his parents we have not been able to find any trace. Probably they were lost in the terrible commotions of Europe, and their records destroyed. John Hottel and Margaret were married about 1720, and their five children were all born in Europe. This family located in the northern part of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where they lived eighteen years and by thrift and industry acquired lands and homes, so that the name Hottel appears on the tax records a few years after their advent. These immigrants took the oath of allegiance to the Crown of Great Britain. In religion they were either Lutherans, Reformed, or possibly Mennonites. They spoke the German language and were faithful, patriotic citizens. According to Prof. I. D. Rupp, (Sept. 21, 1732) Ulrich Hottel who was sick, arrived with 188 passengers. No further record is given. Probably he was a brother of John. **** PARENTS AND THREE CHILDREN MOVE TO THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY, VIRGINIA **** Public records show that our Progenitor, John Hottel, Margaret, his wife, and three children, Charles, George and Barbara Anna, emigrated in 1750 to the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, where their descendants are legion today. John and Henry remained in Pennsylvania. Why they became separated is unknown. The descendants of John Hottel rank among the prominent citizens of the Keystone State. They held their Third Family Reunion at Waldheim Park near Allentown, July 26, 1917, at which Rev. John T. Huddle, D. D., of Washington, D. C. and the writer as their honored guests delivered addresses. Those represented on the program were, Joseph M. Hottel, Benneville Hottle, Rev. Benjamin Hottel, Edwin B. Hottle, Lewis L. Schuler, Sylvester Egner, George W. Hottel, Eastburn R. Hottle, J. Abraham Huttel, Joseph S. Hottle, Rev. Henry H. Moyer, Helen Kilmer and Mrs. Frank A. Kaufman. This branch of the Hottel family is not included in the body of the genealogy. What became of Henry, brother of John Hottel, is unknown. Probably he died unmarried. **** EXACT LOCATION OF THE JOHN HOTTEL HOMESTEAD **** Over near North Mountain on the head waters of Toms Brook, out a short distance from the village of Toms Brook, lies the original Hottel homestead, containing 341 acres, which was purchased from Lord Thomas Fairfax, Aug. 30, 1750. This body of land lies six miles north of Woodstock, (Muellerstadt), the seat of Shenandoah County founded in 1760. It is believed the Hottel domicile stood near the Hottel spring on the back road leading to Mt. Olive, near the present residence of David H. Keller. We sometimes wish these worthy ancestors who invaded and occupied these premises in the long ago, could return and reveal themselves to our curious eyes. Nearly two centuries ago they joined the spectral hosts that dwell among the stars, while in yonder Keller graveyard their ashes sleep. Lovingly Virginia's skies are arched above their tombs. **** CHILDREN AND THEIR DESCENDANTS **** Charles, George and the only daughter, Barbara Anna Hottel, married and lived their entire lives near the vicinity of their parents. They reared prosperous and progressive families. Charles was the father of 11 children; George was the father of 9 children; Barbara Anna, who married George Keller, was the mother of 9 children. Their descendants in the Shenandoah Valley are legion. Apparently the Valley could not accommodate them all, hence in the early years of the nineteenth century the Hottel bee hive swarmed, and today thousands are scattered from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from Alaska and Canada to Florida and Texas. A great majority of them have adhered to the faith of their fathers and are a fine people; some have attained to great age, few?? to great wealth. The majority are well-to-do. Some, if poor, are very?? respectable. None, as far as known, have been pensioners of publi?? charity. While some have attained to eminence in the literary worl?? and have acquired fame, others have blazoned their names in thei?? country's annals and their deeds have engaged the historian's pen. They are included among the various vocations of the business an?? professional world. We find ministers of the various denomination?? as well as doctors, lawyers, judges, teachers, farmers; intelligent an?? educated men and women, high school and college graduates in va?? numbers. **** THE OLD FRIEDEN'S CHURCH AND HOTTEL-KELLER SCHOOLHOUSE **** On the original Hottel homestead near where the first Hottel domici?? stood, the old Frieden's church was built in 1821. It was owned joint?? by the Reformed and Lutheran congregations. Many of our kin of th?? day worshipped in this church, being identified with one or the oth?? of these bodies. The congregations were separated and the buildi?? abandoned and torn down in 1880 and separate churches were erect?? The Lutherans since then worship at St. Matthew's not far distant, a?? the Reformed people at Harrisville. A community schoolhouse was built at the rear of the Friede?? church, familiarly known as the Hottel-Keller schoolhouse. This ?? erected by free-will offerings of money, labor and material. Geo?? Hottel, John Snarr, the Kellers and many others figured prominently?? this educational enterprise. They believed that education was essen?? to good citizenship and the welfare of our country.

Frazer. Notes for John Bruce: Information from Ancestory.com submitted by Thomas G. Untiedt: The following is an excerpt from the paper "Bruce: Historical Papers #2" by Michael V. Stambach-Bruce, ORB, 1991, (who I think is now deceased). "It is increasingly apparent that the Bruces of Dark Run are descended from the 17th century Bruce family of the Northern Neck of Virginia. My own recent discovery has proven a connection and probable descent of the Elijah Bruce of Culpeper Co., from the family of Henry Bruce, son of William Bruce, d. before 14 Dec. 1683." "Of the numerous lines descending from the earlier Bruce families of the Northern Neck there is one in particular which, in my opinion, is the best candidate for identification as the progenitor of the later Bruce families of Orange, Culpeper, Albemarle, and other counties. That is JOHN BRUCE, son of Henry Bruce. This John Bruce may have been the same who was erroneously identified by Philip Alexander Bruce as the childless son of GEORGE BRUCE, 1650-1715." "It seems likely that JOHN BRUCE of Dark Run married at least twice, MARGARET FRAZIER being his second or later wife. Although no direct evidence has been found that would allow us to determine whether or not David and GEORGE BRUCE were sons or brothers of JOHN BRUCE of Dark Run, the evidence we do have clearly indicates a close relationship. The fact that John received two large patents in 1735, with no record of David or George having received any patents but having lived with or adjacent to John of Dark Run, seems to point to their dependency on John of Dark Run." "We now know that John of Dark Run was appointed by the Court of Hanover Co., Va. to act as the administrator of the estate of Morris (Maurice) Roberts by 1734. This is found in the early Orange Co. records. Other records prove that JOHN BRUCE was a resident of Caroline Co. prior to his migration to Orange Co. We can draw from the fact that a number of the Northern Neck families left Richmond and Westmoreland Cos. at early dates and settled in Caroline Co., later migrating to Orange Co." "Of special interest is the appearance of an entirely "new" JOHN BRUCE who, it appears, may have resided or at least owned property in Spotsylvania Co., Va. This John died before 1740. Was THIS the childless son of GEORGE BRUCE, 1650-1715? This appearance also presents a minor problem. It is obvious from this new research that some or all of the later Dark Run set had lived at Spotsylvania Co. The question is raised, "How do we know whether or not records of JOHN BRUCE during the period of 1733-1740 belong to the deceased John (by 1740) or the JOHN BRUCE of Dark Run who lived into the 1750's at Augusta Co.?" A close examination of these records may reveal that the pre-1740 records can be linked to the post 1740 records by common association, etc." "Another possibility remains; that is, was the earlier JOHN BRUCE of Spotsylvania Co. a brother of Henry Bruce of Richmond Co., Va.?" "The land at Dark Run, originally in Orange Co., later fell into Culpeper and eventually fell into Madison Co., Va. At some point later generations of this Bruce family, as well as members of the QUINN, Ballard, and Watts (all intermarried) families removed to adjacent Albemarle Co., Va. where they maintained close geographic relationships." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Stambach-Bruce also has the following re this John Bruce: "John Bruce, Planter & Merchant b. ca 1690 liv. at Caroline Co., VA., 1732 two patents at Dark Run, Orange Co., VA later liv. at Augusta Co., VA = (?1) ______________? = (2) Margaret Frazier" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr. Stambach-Bruce was apparently convinced that John Bruce of Dark Run was married twice, Margaret Frazier being his second wife. I have not found any evidence to support this but if true Margaret Frazier is probably not the mother of all his children, possibly not any of them. She was the daughter of 3442. Daniel Gaines and 3443. Margaret Bernard. Notes for Simon Miller: Ped. Res. 17 Simon Miller was a captain in Bacon's Rebellion (see below) and an adherent of Nathaniel Bacon. Captain Simon Miller was born in England in 1642. in his will dated Feb 16, 1679 he says he is "aged seaven and thirty yeares or thereabout" He probably came to Virginia about 1673, as he patented 817 acres of land in old Rappahannock County Nov, 5, 1673 for the transportation of sixteen persons into the colony. In Doctor Phillip A. Bruce's "Economic History of Virginia" Vol II p 439 he is mentioned as one of the noted shipbuilders of colonial Virginia, the possessor of considerable estate, and as having "bought 625 acres of land in one tract." The fact that he was a ship-wright, considered in commection with the following notices relating to his family, suggests that his home before coming to virginia might have been Bristol, England, one of the most important ship building ports at that time in Great Britain: ( see Virginia Families, Vol 2, pg 663-669) Original will of Captain Simon Miller is still preserved in the Clerk's WATERS, David. 912120-0624100193127. 1914 E. I have the following on Charles Clay who married Hannah Wilson in 1660 in virginia. Charles was a leader with Bacon in the Great Rebellion of 1676. To this union were born: Mary in 1662, Elizabeth in 1664, John in 1666, thomas in 1668, Henry in 1672, Charles in 1675, and Judith in 1677. My family comes down from Henry. I'll try to see if I have more information on John. From Henry later comes Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky ... and the case of my family ... Mitchell Clay who has some of his children massacred by indians in Mercer County .. a statue was put up on the clourthouse lawn at Princeton, VA in 1977 Sorry, that's all I have immediately.
