Reorganized and reassigned 1 August 1942 as the 86th Engineer Heavy Ponton Battalion

Inactived 2 January 1946 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey

Redesigned 9 March 1954 as 86th Engineer Battalion (Construction)

Activated 25 March 1954 at Fort Dix, New Jersey

Reorganized and redesignated 26 March 1963 as 86th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Army)

Inactiveted 16 August 1969 at Fort Lewis, Washington

Description:

In the scarlet and white of the Engineer Corps, the Viking Ship is symbolical of the bridge-building activities of the organization, such ships having first been used to bridge the ocean in the adventurous, swash - buckling days of Eric the Red, the first of the Vikings to cross the waters.
