New Orleans Square opened in 1966. With the exception of the short lived Hollidayland, it was the first additional themed area added to Disneyland. Construction of New Orleans Square began in 1963. Disney completed    the facade of the Haunted Mansion and  the foundations for the rest of the area when works suddenly came to a halt. Walt pulled his people off the project and put them to work on creating 4 attractions for the '64-'65 Worlds Fair. With the experience gained from the world fair, the New Orleans Square project was redesigned and the original foundation was torn out and the imagineers began again from scratch.

The opening was one of the last park events personally attended by Walt Disney. The area was designed to resemble New Orleans in the middle of the 19th century. This themed land is, so far, unique to Disneyland -- although a portion of the architecture is duplicated in Tokyo Disneyland's Adventureland. Here you will find Disneyland's best restaurants, a selection of quaint little shops, and of course, two of the parks most famous attractions, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion.
