CORDING INSTRUCTIONS

Twisted cording can add the perfect finishing touch to many needlework pieces-Christmas ornaments, tea cozies, pincuchions, Christmas stockings, bell pull, and scissor fobs to name a few. We hope this instructions are helpful to you in creating a needlework heirloom to truly treasure.

These are instructions for how to make and properly apply twisted cording. We will cover a single color twisted cord, however you may wish to add several colors to further customize your cording to your particular need.

To determine the length of fibers you will need, use the simple formula of YARDAGE MEASUREMENT X3 =FIBER LENGTH. You then need to determine how many ply of this strand length you need to accomplish the appropriate diameter cord you would like to make. Once you have this set and ready, tie each end of the cord, and secure one end to a doorknob or a kitchen drawer handle (or better yet, have a friend help you by holding one end!) Twist the other end until the strand slightly starts to kink. At this point, grasp the center of the twisted strand set, and bring the two free ends together, and tie them together. From the center point fold, grasp up 4-5 inches, and release this section to twist on itself. Stroke this released section and pinch up another 4-5 inches. Release again. Repeat this until the entire length has been released. Knot the final end to hold the twists.

Now to apply your cording! Use a thread which matches your fabric, not the cording, and apply from the backside of the piece. Your stitches should fall in the groove of the twists, and not pierce the actual cording itself. Doing it this way will prevent any wearing of the cord, or worse a frayed thread within the cording.
