Mark 1: 23 ¶ Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,

(Please notice that a religious building in itself, will not keep evil spirits away! The “unclean spirit” was probably not there for any good reason. That spirit probably wanted to make some trouble for Jesus and any other godly person there. Maybe by making noise or any other ruckus to take the attention off of the word and work of God!).

24  saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are----the Holy One of God!"

(All evil spirits fear Jesus Christ! Cf. James 2:19  You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe----and tremble!).

25  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"

(Jesus did not have to, and would let the evil spirits speak!)

26  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.

Jesus had (still has) the power over them, and He used it! Cf. Philippians 2:10  that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,

Vs.23. “{With an unclean spirit} (en pneumati akayartw). This use of en "with" is common in the Septuagint like the Hebrew _be_,  but it occurs also in the papyri. It is the same idiom as "in Christ, ""in the Lord" so common with Paul. In English we speak of our being in love,  in drink, in his cups,  etc. The unclean spirit was in the man and the man in the unclean spirit,  a man in the power of the unclean spirit. Luke has "having, "the usual construction. See on "Mt 22:43". Unclean spirit is used as synonymous with {demon} (daimonion). It is the idea of estrangement from God (#Zec 13:2). The whole subject of demonology is difficult,  but no more so than the problem of the devil. Jesus distinguishes between the man and the unclean spirit. Usually physical or mental disease accompanied the possession by demons. One wonders today if the degenerates and confirmed criminals so common now are not under the power of demons. The only cure for confirmed criminals seems to be conversion (a new heart).” [RWP].

Vs.23. “And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit-- literally,  "in an unclean spirit"--that is,  so entirely under demoniacal power that his personality was sunk for the time in that of the spirit. The frequency with which this character of "impurity" is ascribed to evil spirits--some twenty times in the Gospels--is not to be overlooked.” [JFB].

Mark 1:32  At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. (If someone has a problem with demons, that person should come to Jesus for help!  Also, we need to bring them to Him for help. ).

Mark 1:34  Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him. (Not just a few, but, “many” demons were cast out. There are some today, who spent a great deal of time talking to the demons that they are about to cast out. But Jesus did not seen to do such!).

Mark 1:39  And He was preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and casting out demons.

We can see from the above verses, that the casting out of demons was (and is) a normal part of the ministry of Jesus! Also, that He cast them out wherever the need was.

Vs.32. “{When the sun did set} (ote edusen o hliov). This picturesque detail Mark has besides "at even" (oqiav genomenhv,  genitive absolute,  evening having come). Matthew has "when even was come, "Luke "when the sun was setting." The sabbath ended at sunset and so the people were now at liberty to bring their sick to Jesus. The news about the casting out of the demon and the healing of Peter's mother-in-law had spread all over Capernaum. They brought them in a steady stream (imperfect tense,  eferon). Luke (#Lu 4:40) adds that Jesus laid his hand on every one of them as they passed by in grateful procession.” [RWP].

Vs. 32 “they brought unto him all that were diseased,  and them that were possessed with devils--the demonized. From #Lu 13:14 we see how unlawful they would have deemed it to bring their sick to Jesus for a cure during the sabbath hours. They waited,  therefore,  till these were over,  and then brought them in crowds. Our Lord afterwards took repeated occasion to teach the people by example,  even at the risk of His own life,  how superstitious a straining of the sabbath rest this was.” [JFB].

Vs.34 “{Suffered not} (ouk hfien). Would not allow,  imperfect tense of continued refusal.” [RWP].

Vs. 34 “and he suffered not the devils to speak; either for him,  or against him; which shows his great power over them:

because they knew him,  or "that they knew him": he would not suffer them to say a word about him,  because he knew that they knew that he was the Christ,  the Son of God,  or he would not permit them to say who he was; because he had others to bear witness of him,  and better testimonies than theirs,  and lest his enemies should reproach him with an agreement and familiarity with them.” [JOHN GILL].

“Galilee was then densely peopled. Josephus says it contained two hundred forty towns and villages.” [PNT].

Mark 3:13 ¶ And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. (Coming to Jesus will lead to ministry and the power to do it!).

14 Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach,

3:15  and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons:

From  Mark 3:13-15, we learn that Jesus Christ gave the power to heal and cast out demons to His followers! Cf. Mark 16:15-20.

Mark 3:22 ¶ And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, "He has Beelzebub," and, "By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons."

It is easy to see that these “scribes” did not have the Spirit of God in them! For one of the Gifts of the Spirit is discerning of spirits.  Cf. 1 Cor. 12:10  to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

The GK word for “Beelzebub” is “Beelzeboul”, it means: “lord of flies”. It was use (at this time) as a name for Satan. [See “THE COMPLETE WORD STUDY DICTIONARY” by Spiros Zodhiates.].    The word is in the present tense, the “scribes” are saying: “Jesus is always casting out demons by the power of Satan”. What the “scribes” are saying is wrong and blaspheme of the worse kind! Cf. Mark 3:29  "but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation" ----

Matthew 10:33  "But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.

Not all teachers teach what is right! Cf. Mark 9:42  "But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.

Mark 5:12  So all the demons begged Him, saying, "Send us to the swine, that we may enter them." (It would seem from this, that demons want earthy bodies to be able to do more harm to humans.).

Mark 5:15  Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. (God wants His people to have a good and healthy mind.). Cf. 2 Timothy 1:7  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Colossians 1:13  He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,

It seems to me, that this man became born-again, for he is seen “sitting” at the feet of Jesus! Cf. Luke 8:35  Then they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.

Mark 5:16  And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the swine.

Mark 5:18  And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him.

You will notice that the person, who is saved from demon-possession, will want to be with and spent time with Jesus Christ!

Mark 6:13  And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.

Again, Jesus casts out “many” demons.

Mark 7:26  The woman was a Greek, a Syro-Phoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

The person having the demon does not always have to be the one asking for help. In this case, the “daughter” may have been a minor. Like with Divine healing parents can ask for their young children. (For more on “Divine healing” see my web site “Jesus the Healer, school of the Bible”.).

Mark 7:29  Then He said to her, "For this saying go your way; the demon has gone out of your daughter."

Her “saying” showed her faith.

Mark 7:30  And when she had come to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed.

Since Jesus Christ is God the Son, His word is perfect! Cf. Psalms 19:7 ¶ The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;

Mark 9:38  Now John answered Him, saying, "Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us." (We all need to learn to work together, for the Lord!).

Mark 16:9 ¶ Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. (Here is poof that a person can have more than one demon, at a time in them!).

Mark 16:17  "And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;

Will  follow who? Why the ones who “believe”!

All works of power should be done in the Name of Jesus!
