Beach Boys Concert--September 21, 2002

The Diamond, Lake Elsinore, CA

Review

This was my second Mike & Bruce concert this year, following their performance at Humphrey's in June. After attending a wedding of some close friends, three friends and I headed up to Lake Elsinore, about 45 minutes away, for a Beach Boys concert. Bamd member Scott Totten, who has contributed to the setlist archive in the past, had backstage passes ready for us.

The venue's staff was clearly not ready for such a big event, and was confused about the backstage passes, and gave us the wrong tickets. There were a number of other people whose tickets were lost in the computer system. However, amidst all the chaos, we were able to meet Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, and Dean Torrence, courtesy of Scott Totten. There are some pictures posted below!

The concert itself was pretty good. I seem to notice that at some concerts the tempo seems purposely slowed down. The uptempo songs definitely seemed slower than at the show in June. A pleasant surprise was Mike & Adrian's unreleased version of "Summertime Blues", which can be heard on the bootleg "A Baker's Dozen". I had forgotten that it had been added to the setlist, and it was cool to hear something I wasn't expecting. Later, Scott let me know that the first time that "Summertime Blues" was rehearsed was at Humphrey's, although it wasn't performed that night.

After the concert, we got to meet almost all of the rest of the band, with the sole exception of Chris Farmer, who had left early to hang out with family members. The band was rushing off to L.A., so we didn't get to really talk too much or ask questions, but there's always next time! Scott really hooked us up and was very welcoming to all of us. Thanks, Scott!
