Mission: The blue fleet wants him to cooperate and fight with the fleet for the good of humanity. . His hidden motivations lead him through battles.
Character Growth: Hayami is deeply hurt by the mistake he made in the past, and, because of that, appears to be self absorbed and directionless. Things are not quite as they appear though. He actually has been harboring a deeper cause from his past, and when the opportunity comes he takes the chance to set things right again.
Relationships: working recovering jobs underwater. Soon it is apparent that is has a former professional relationship with the captain on Blue 6, something that he is reminded of often. Other than the captain Hayami won't allow any other friendly faces. Kino attempts friendship more than once, but he refuses each attempt. . Hayami does make contact with one of the creatures, Mutio, and develops a mutual curiosity.
