What They Say --
In the near future, the oceans have risen, causing all land at sea level to be flooded.  With the expansion of the oceans, humanity has found a new enemy in Zorndyke.  A war has erupted between the surface dwellers and the sea dwellers [x], and mankind is placing all of its hopes in the new vessel Blue Submarine No. 6 and her crew.

Mayumi Kino [x] is a young, devoted pilot.  Her most recent mission is to get Tetsu Hayami [x] to rejoin the Blue Fleet.  However, he refuses and angers her, so she leaves.  Later, however, the two meet again under more dire circumstances and they start to work together.  Even in the thick of battle, however, it becomes clear they don't see eye to eye . . .

My Opinions --
This OVA relies heavily on the unique CGI mixed with the traditional artistry.  Some people don't like that type of computer animation, but this story and setting is perfect for it.  The undersea world is the right environment to experiment with this technique and it works well with the story presented.  Earth is shown as a drowned planet, with humanity making a last ditch effort to survive.  The humans are survivors fighting for their right to exists, and the enemy is led by a "mad" scientist by the name of Zorndyke who believes in their own cause just as strongly.

Everyone is affected by this world wide disaster and the basic human reactions to this trauma are explored.  This also has a strong pro-environmental position.  Both the humans and Zorndyke's creatures have to grow up and find compassion for each other.

Blue Submarine No. 6 is divided into four parts titled: Blues, Pilots, Hearts and Minasoko.  The uncut version is for sale at stores such as Media Play, and online at Express.com and other anime stores.  There are only four parts, but extra footage can be found on the video game release.  The edited version is periodically shown on Cartoon Network.
