PRAISE FOR Garbage Pail Kids:

"If you ask me, reliving my time with Bad Breath Seth and Potty Scotty is worth the cover price alone." —USAToday.com

"I worried that [the Garbage Pail Kids] might seem too time-bound for their own good; but if anything, 27 years later, they’re more poignant. Maybe it’s because I’m a worried, concerned adult, but more likely it’s because nothing is ever as funny as it is when you’re ten years old—and everything is a lot scarier." —CapitalNewYork.com

"The book is a wonderfully designed tribute to these shit-disturbing cards in all their graphic, full-color glory." —ComicsBeat.com

"There's a lot of interesting stuff in Spiegelman's intro, and in the afterward by John Pound, the artist who originated and drew the bulk of the Kids. But the real reason to buy this book is for the graphic brilliance of the art itself." —Boston Phoenix

ABRAMS BOOK RELEASE : APRIL 1, 2012

The first official Topps Garbage Pail Kids mini-sized coffee-table artbook was released on April 1, 2012 with a $19.95 SRP with later subsequent editons costing $21.95; the publication shipped two weeks early in the month of March if ordered online and available at a significant discount. The 224 page book was published by Abrams Books (fna Harry N. Abrams, Inc. 'HNA'), specifically the Abrams ComicArt division, both being a subsidiary of the French publisher La Martinière Groupe, and covers the first five GPK releases, OS1 through OS5. The book is accompanied with four, die-cut bonus sticker cards of previously unpublished artwork. Eight known editions are in print for the Abrams U.S. release as of 2017.

DESCRIPTION: "Garbage Pail Kids—a series of collectible stickers produced by Topps in the 1980s—combined spectacular artwork and over-the-top satire. The result was an inspired collaboration between avant-garde cartoonists and humorists including Art Spiegelman, Mark Newgarden, John Pound, Tom Bunk, and Jay Lynch. A new generation of fans continues to embrace this pop-culture phenomenon as Garbage Pail Kids stickers are still being published. Now, for the first time, all 206 rare and hard-to-find images from Series 1 through 5 are collected in an innovative package, along with a special set of four limited-edition, previously unreleased bonus stickers. This exciting follow up to Wacky Packages is guaranteed to appeal to die-hard collectors as well as a new generation of fans."

H.M. FRENCH HARDCOVER : OCTOBER 25, 2012
H.M. FRENCH COLLECTOR REISSUE : OCTOBER 27, 2017

The French Les Crados publication was released October of 2012, close to the time of the U.S. BNS1 set, published by Huggin Muninn Editions for 19.90€. The hardcover book is almost exactly the same size as its American counterpart and includes Les Crados sets 1 and 2, covering the U.S. OS1 through OS5 images only, nothing for sets OS6 through OS10. The French edition is not designed to look like a card pack, therefore, there is no dust jacket on the book and uses the original final card image and not the rendered wrapper artwork. The release does not include any bonus cards, however, the book runs over 224 pages, includes a section in the back with eighteen images U.S. OS1 - OS5 images not included in the original Les Crados releases plus additional images at the end of the book along with 'Les Crados En France' story.

DESCRIPTION: "MATHIEU the disgusting, ROBIN fingers, RENÉE Morvoné, but also GASTON Buttons, Bad HELEN, FRÉDÉRIC Atomic, Fly ARMELLE, Émile ÉMILE, AGNÈS head-of-buttocks ... Genuine social phenomena of the late 80s, The Crados have marked generations of fascinated children and upset parents. Find the best of them in this collector's book prefaced by their unsuspecting creator: Art Spiegelman, the author of Maus!"

In October of 2017, five years later, a hardcover reissue collector edition, incorrectly listed as a softcover/paperback, of the French Les Crados book was released by Huggin Muninn Editions for 19.95€ "inclus : avec un paquet de 4 cartes inédites" — includes : a pack of 4 new cards, listed on the back cover with a new nameplate. Also stated as: "version collector avec cartes" — collector (edition) version with cards. The Huginn & Muninn label was born in 2010 and specializes in new pop, geek and graphic cultures and partners with Abrams, Dorling Kindersley 'DK', Insight Editions, et cetera.

1. BOOK: Similar to the previous Wacky Packages and other card art books by Abrams, the Garbage Pail Kids edition is also designed to look and feel like a trading card Wax Pack from the '80s. The hardcover book has a slab of gum pictured on the front cover with the following pages containing the trading card artwork, while the dust jacket acts as the wrapper. The card artwork on page measures roughly 4.0 x 5.5 inches, as opposed to the released 2.5 x 3.5 inches card size; slightly smaller than the original 5 x 7 final artwork.

*

2 . BOOK: Since an artbook that caters more to adults is considered a far different art medium than trading cards usually marketed towards children, Topps can take the liberty of including bonus art material "For Promotional Use Only — Not For Resale". This material can be far edgier than a regular card release with themes and content potentially not suitable for a younger audience; ie. two gun themes and two sharp instruments. The Wacky Packages art books and calendar contained similar adult topics such as alcohol and cigarettes not found in recent releases. There are nine different card editions in print; blank for the '1st ed' and '2nd/3rd ed.' through '9th ed.' on the backside next to 'Topps'. The same cards were released for the 2017 French Les Crados reissue book with French text on the reverse card backs.

**

3. BOOK: The artwork images present in the book are reproduced from Transparencies of the original art. Less than nine of the card images are from digital files that were touched-up for the publication. The only nostalgic feeling the artwork is missing are the die-cut lines for the peel away sticker.

*

4. CALENDAR: As opposed to the Abrams book, the calendar contains only twelve Characters; three images from OS1, two images from OS2, two images from OS3, three images from OS4 and one image from OS5. However, there is one Christmas image for December that comes from OS7, a set not covered in the Abrams publication.

**

5. CALENDAR: Since a wall calendar is considered a far different art medium than trading cards marketed towards children, Topps can take the liberty of including bonus material "For Promotional Use Only — Not For Resale". This material can be far edgier than a regular card release, with themes and content potentially not suitable for a younger audience; ie. a gun, sharp instrument, orifice and blood. The Abrams Wacky Packages art books and calendar contained similar adult topics such as alcohol and cigarettes not found in recent releases.

*

6. CALENDAR: The artwork for card #1 of 4 Failed PHIL, intended for the unpublished OS16 GPK set in 1988, had the Hand Guns removed from the card image; thus, showing the character triggering an 'air hand' gun.

**

7. CALENDAR: The wall calendar contains the largest rendered Wrapper Artwork by Tom Bunk. The calendar also portrays the old die-cut outline image behind the calendar dates for roughly half of the calendar.
