THE
TOPPS COMPANY AND ABRAMS ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC PUBLISHING ALLIANCE February 22, 2011; New York, NY: Topps, a leading global marketer of collectibles and confections, has granted ABRAMS, the preeminent publisher of illustrated books, an exclusive license to publish books inspired by Topps’ long-standing presence in sports and popular culture. The multi-year arrangement is expected to yield an array of non-fiction and fiction sports and entertainment-themed books and calendars, which will be published across all of the ABRAMS imprints, including Abrams ComicArts; Abrams Image; Abrams Books for Young Readers; Amulet Books; and Stewart, Tabori & Chang. The deal was negotiated at Topps by Ira Friedman, VP of Global Licensing, and at ABRAMS by Charles Kochman, Editorial Director. The first line of books is slated to release in spring of 2012.
“The word ‘Topps’ conjures up memories of collecting sports heroes and chronicling pop culture phenomena. In 2008, Topps and ABRAMS collaborated on a project for the first time. An exquisitely produced, cleverly packaged full-color hardcover book based upon Topps’ own Wacky Packages parody property generated much acclaim, both critically and commercially, and spawned a follow-up edition as well as the first-ever Wacky Packages calendar. This initial relationship prompted discussions of other possible projects in the vast Topps’ portfolio, which led to the alliance.

The author reached a three-book deal with publisher Abrams’ Children’s Books, beginning with Welcome to Smellville, which will hit shelves this fall. Garbage Pail Kids first launched in 1985 as collectible sticker cards and has since grown to include merchandise such as T-shirts, toys, mobile and board games, and more. In Stine’s vision, the Garbage Pail Kids are gross and weird and strange, but they’re not bad kids — they just don’t know any better. Welcome to Smellville introduces Adam Bomb, Brainy Janie, Junkfood John, and Nervous Rex as they get into mischief, battling bullies and their archenemies, the Perfects. “The Garbage Pail Kids are ghastly, loud, messy, out of control . . . out of their minds. The Abrams 'FALL 2020' catalogue showcased a mock up of the upcoming youth novel release with 'Includes 4 exclusive stickers1' peaking out from the book innards as well as two illustrations by artist Jeff Zapata. Although Jeff's artwork was still in a rough artwork stage, Abrams liked it so much they used it early for the catalogue spread. BOOK: Similar to the previous Wacky
Packages and other card art books by Abrams, the Garbage Pail Kids edition is
also designed to look and feel like a trading card Wax Pack
from the '80s. The hardcover book has a slab of gum pictured on the front cover
with the following pages containing the trading card artwork, while the dust jacket
acts as the wrapper. The card artwork on page measures roughly 4.0 x 5.5 inches,
as opposed to the released 2.5 x 3.5 inches card size; slightly smaller than the
original 5 x 7 final artwork. • 2 . BOOK: Since an artbook that caters more to adults is considered a far different art medium than trading cards usually marketed towards children, Topps can take the liberty of including bonus art material 'FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY — NOT FOR RESALE'. This material can be far edgier than a regular card release with themes and content potentially not suitable for a younger audience; ie. two gun themes and two sharp instruments. The Wacky Packages art books and calendar contained similar adult topics such as alcohol and cigarettes not found in recent releases. There are sixteen different card editions in print due to seventeen different product runs; blank for the '1st ed', '2nd/3rd ed.' are together, and '4th ed.' through '18th ed.' on the backside found to the right of the 'Topps®' logo. The same cards were released for the 2017 French Les Crados reissue book with French text on the reverse card backs; the reissue edition only.  There are several changes to the cards and book editions: The 'FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY — NOT FOR RESALE' line is missing from above the GPK header starting with the 6th edition. The 'ART BY...' line at the bottom of the card, that includes the artist and release information, is missing from the 6th through 9th edition cards.  • 3. BOOK: The artwork images present in the book are reproduced from Transparencies of the original art. Less than nine of the card images are from digital files that were touched-up for the publication. The only nostalgic feeling the artwork is missing are the die-cut lines for the peel away sticker. • 4. BOOK: Note the differences between the previous print run cards compared to the later '12th ed.' through '18th ed.' card backs (using the '5th ed.' and '12th ec.' card backs for comparison); the Edition Number isn't the only thing that underwent a change: The 'ABRAMS COMIC ARTS' brand has been updated for this twelfth edition showcasing the new, stylized 'A' logo next to it. The website addresses for Abrams and Topps no longer contains the 'WWW' (world wide web) beginning sequence. And, the cards are considerably thicker than previous prints, using a 'perforated' card stock, you can identify the eight perforations around the card edge; except the '15th ed.' are clean cut.  • 5. BOOK: Abrams printed a eleventh edition of their GPK book specifically due to the 2019 San Diego Comic Con in which artist John Pound was in attendance and signing autographs; the book can be found with a 'SIGNED COPY' sticker on the front cover and an inside page signed by Pound with 'SDCC 2019' after his signature. Pound was also signed ADAM Bomb cards printed by Topps for the special occasion. ABRAMS' PR DOCUMENT: 11:00 AM–12:00 PM – Abrams booth #1216 – John Pound will sign Garbage Pail Kids. Limit 1 item per person.  • 6. CALENDAR: As opposed to the Abrams book, the calendar contains only twelve Characters; three images from OS1, two images from OS2, two images from OS3, three images from OS4 and one image from OS5. However, there is one Christmas image for December that comes from OS7, a set not covered in the Abrams publication.  • 7. CALENDAR: Since a wall calendar is considered a far different art medium than trading cards marketed towards children, Topps can take the liberty of including bonus material "For Promotional Use Only — Not For Resale". This material can be far edgier than a regular card release, with themes and content potentially not suitable for a younger audience; ie. a gun, sharp instrument, orifice and blood. The Abrams Wacky Packages art books and calendar contained similar adult topics such as alcohol and cigarettes not found in recent releases.  • 8. CALENDAR: The artwork for card #1 of 4 Failed PHIL, intended for the unpublished OS16 GPK set in 1988, had the Hand Guns removed from the card image; thus, showing the character triggering an 'air hand' gun.  • 9. CALENDAR: The wall calendar contains the largest rendered Wrapper Artwork by Tom Bunk. The calendar also portrays the old die-cut outline image behind the calendar dates for roughly half of the calendar. |

FRENCH BOOK: The LES CRADOS publication has the card image for 176a Condo MINNIE and 176b BILL Ding missing from page 218 resulting in a blank page within the publication. The book collage backside has "inclus : avec un paquet de 4 cartes inédites" on a yellow nameplate for the 2017 reissue collector edition and the price has gone up .05€ since the 2012 release.  • 3. BOOK: The publication covers Characters from the OS1 GPK set through the OS5 GPK set from the 1985 through the 1986 releases. The back cover dust jacket character stems from the GPK Poster release by artist Tom Bunk. • 4. CALENDAR: The Brand New Series 1 Little Red Ridinghood parody created by Mark Pingitore and painted by artist James Warhola was cut from the set; another similar concept by Brent Engstrom was submitted for the Brand New Series 2 set that unfortunately did not make the set either.   • ~6.
