United Kingdom Series 6 | Garbage Pail Kids World

RELEASE YEAR : 1987

The UK 6th Series Garbage Pail Kids set, much like the UK 5th Series set, continued using the white numbered boxes to cover the old U.S. numbering system. Any card numbers that were skipped over for the UK 4th Series and UK 5th Series sets were added to the UK 6th Series GPK release; which adds to the confusion of the UK releases since the numbering is not sequential. The UK 6th Series set contains 48 cards from the U.S. 6th Series set and 40 cards from the U.S. 7th Series set. The set was released in 1987 and contains 44 card variations in total, one-third of the uncut sheet.

The UK Garbage Pail Kids were released after the initial hype and craze of the U.S. phenomenon. The cards were released in the UK (England, Ireland, Scotland) as well as distributed in Holland and parts of Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway, Denmark), slapped with a clocal price tag. Unlike the U.S. cards that measure 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches and are die-cut, the UK cards are smaller, measuring 2 1/8 x 3 inches and are non die-cut, peeling from the edges, and are sometimes referred to as 'mini' because of their cigarette-card size. The sticker cards come three to a plastic or cellophane pack with a slab of gum, except for the OS5 set that comes four cards to a pack. The price is marked on the box rather than on the packs. Fifteen original series U.S. sets were released by Topps compared to only eight UK series released by Topps Ireland; Topps International Limited established in November 1975. All international GPK are a direct reproduction of the U.S. version or sequential international release and are changed to accommodate each country that they are released in. This includes any nomenclature, numbering or header and logo changes—also, covering up card numbers with overlaying boxed numbers or old 'PEEL HERE' arrows with boxes or larger arrows pointing in the opposite direction. A 15-card Giant set was also released in the UK which is same as the U.S. version, but with different copyright date information and matte finished backs. An unpublished OS7 UK set was also produced but never printed or released in the United Kingdom.

— The exact same Garbage Pail Kid Card Character is used twice within the UK releases; U.S. card character 245b BARBIE Q. is used in the UK 5th Series set as card number 201b and in the UK 6th Series set as card number 245b.

— There are several card characters with the Same Forename within the release; cards 216b Small PAUL & 222b PAUL Bunion (U.S. 281), 208b Teed-Off TOM & 218a TOM Thumb, and cards 214b Cranky CHRISTINE (U.S. 269b; name change) & 232b CHRISTINE Vaccine (U.S. 287a) due to combining more than one U.S. set for the UK release.

— On the back of card 211a See More SANDY, for the GPK Comic, you can see the spot where the character name ADAM Bomb was supposed to be placed under the character name Leaky LINDSAY; this makes sense since this is a reproduction of the U.S. cards and it's missing within the U.S. release as well.

— The PEEL HERE arrow on card 241a Old GLORIA is in the wrong corner compared to the U.S. version; the U.S. card has the arrow in the bottom right-hand corner because of the die-cut and blocking the artwork in the upper left-hand corner.

— There are eight Nomenclature Changes for the UK 6th Series characters compared to the U.S. 6th Series set, for characters 211a See More SEYMOUR, 212a Upliftin' CLIFTON, 214a Off-Color CLARA, 215a Gnawing NORA, 216b Small SAUL, 225b Snotty LOTTIE, 244a Welcome MATT, and 247a RUSTY Heap. The descriptive word spelling has also been changed for card 214a.

— The U.S. 6th Series card Characters Not Used in any set: 210a, 212b, 213a, 213b, 219b, 220b, 222a, 222b, 224a, 227b, 228a, 230a, 232b, 233a, 233b, 234b, 237a, 239b, 241b, 246b, and 249b.

— There are three Nomenclature Changes for the UK 6th Series characters compared to the U.S. 7th Series set, for cards 269b Cranky KRISTIN, 259a Grilled GIL, and 262a Brainless BRYAN. The card numbers, unlike the 6th Series characters, are different for the 7th Series.

— The 7th U.S. Series card Characters Not Used in any published set: 251a, 252b, 254b, 255b, 256b, 257a, 257b, 258b, 261a, 261b, 263a, 263b, 266b, 267b, 268b, 270b, 271a, 271b, 272a, 272b, 273a, 273b, 274b, 275b, 276a, 277b, 278b, 279a, 279b, 280a, 282a, 282b, 283b, 284a, 284b, 285b, 287b, 289a, 289b, 290a, 291a, 291b, 292a, and 292b. NOTE: A UK 7th Series set was produced but never released and remains unpublished; a few mock-up images have turned up on the Topps Vault auctions on eBay.

— The U.S. 1st Series through the 7th Series and the U.S. 10th Series through 12th Series are the only sets depicted in the Original Series UK GPK releases. The U.S. 8th Series, 9th Series, 13th Series, 14th Series and 15th Series sets are not found in any Original Series UK sets. NOTE: The UK All-New Series (ANS) album sticker set does contain some of these characters, published at a much later date.
