RELEASE PERIOD : DECEMBER 1987

The two print runs of the 11th Series Garbage Pail Kids (a/k/a OS11 GPK; Original Series) are the same except for their wrappers and a few minor variations caused by printing errors that are found in both print runs. The first print run wrapper has the 25¢ logo and the second print run wrapper has no 25¢ logo.  This is the first series to inlude the 'Flick It!' section on the back of various cards completed by Richard Mcguire. With the GPK series in its final run from 1987-1988 and the popularity slowing down, product is harder to find raising the price per pack at certain locations, increasing the demand for these cards by collectors years later.

1. The third and last Garbage Pail Kids set with No Card back Variations.

2. The only GPK set with twin cards containing Different Colored Nameplates, both a red and a yellow nameplate for each twin character; cards 448a Touch TONI (red) and 448b Phoney JONI (yellow) and cards 451a Destroyed LLOYD (red) and 451b Tinsel TIM (yellow).

3. The GPK set has two cards with the Same First Name; cards 440a BERT Squirt and 449a BERT Food.

4. The third GPK set found with production Printing Errors during the second print run for cards 458a Dental Hy GENE (green bar) and 458b RUDY Canal (green bar) and for cards 459a VomiTED (orange mark, yellow blotch) and 459b Juicy JULES (yellow blotch). NOTE: Different variations within these errors exist, the images pictured are only samples.

5. The only GPK set to have a Checklist found with a dark yellow color and a Pink GPK Title due to the color saturation; a regular, light yellow checklist can also be found for both print runs for cards 459a VomiTED and 459b Juicy JULES.

6. The fourth set to have a card showcasing GPK Characters from previous releases. The Card images for 441a Loose LEIF and 441b Composition BOOKER pay tribute to several 9th Series card images whose stickers are stuck to the loose leaf binder; 349a Polluted PERCY and 349b Barnacle BILL, 368a NAT Splat and 368b Jugglin' JUD and 354a CLARK Shark and 354b MANNY Eater.

7. The seventh GPK set to contain cards with the GPK Acronym found within the artwork. The GPK acronym found on the baseball cap of the character in cards 437a Sliced BRAD and 437b Dead LEE and on the desktop of cards 441a Loose LEIF and 441b Composition BOOKER (above the hand).

8. The Completed Puzzles for the 11th Series are alphabetically sequential with the 10th Series set which contained puzzles 'K' and 'L'. The puzzles now contain 16 pieces and the set has two puzzles much like the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th and 10th Series sets for card characters 458a Dental Hy GENE and 458b RUDY Canal for puzzle 'M' and 459a VomiTED and 459b Juicy JULES for puzzle 'N'.

9. The second GPK set to have the PEEL HERE Arrow pointing higher up as compared to the previous PEEL HERE arrow; the remaining GPK sets, the 12th Series through the unpublished 16th Series, will also have this new arrow placement.

10. The second Garbage Pail Kids set that has a set of cards with No PEEL HERE Arrows; cards 440a BERT Squirt and 440b FRITZIE Zits.

11. The only Garbage Pail Kids set with completed Puzzles containing only 16 Pieces.

12. The 11th Series GPK set has the Light Blue Name Bar, but not the light pink name bar.

13. The GPK set with the Longest (Original Series) Name; card 428b Garbage Mouth GILBERT which has 19 characters.

1
.
Pictured below are two of Tom Bunk's Early GPK Color Roughs that were finished in 1987 with the character for cards 427a Ripped FLETCH and 427b Taped TATE where the shirt color has been changed, the diaper replaced for pants, the background color changed and the tape dispenser design switched; and the character for cards 434a HOLLY Daze and 434b Joyous NOEL where the image is mirror-flipped, the stocking colors changed and the clothing color changed.

2. According to James Warhola's Study in Dinosuars for cards 425a DENNY Saur and 425b RIP Tile a thumbnail sketch shows the dinosaur Kid and a note by Warhola that the urine should be 'very green pee'. James would oftentimes meet up with Art Spiegelman, who also lived in New York, to go over concepts in person over food and drink. The character in the boat scenerio, riding the wave of pee, stayed in the scene from start to finish. Spiegelman questioned whether the urine should be green or blue; as the color rough demonstrates, the color blue was chosen and the dinasuar was initially the color green. Art also noted that one of the buildings should look like a fire hydrant (a canine gag) and the building does take this form for the final artwork, but I'm not sure the joke comes through. In the end, the dinasuar Kid became a brown and flesh-colored 'reptile' where the tail is not in view and the character's face becomes cheerful.

3. The Flick It! Section artwork on the back of the cards which emulates a flipbook-type effect was completed by Richard McGuire. The Puzzle Puke artwork on the back of the cards was completed by Tom Bunk. Artist Jay Lynch completed the written gags, the color roughs and final artwork assisted by Gary Whitney.

4. Pictured below is a John Pound Color Rough and sample for cards 419a MEG-A-Volt and 419b Charged MARGE. Since very few un-revised artwork pieces by Pound are available there are very few changes, if any, that can be found between the tight pencil, color rough and final artwork since they are photocopied and colored and painted over. Also pictured below is the Pencil Art for cards 458a Dental Hy GENE and 458b RUDY Canal. Since John Pound uses a scan from the pencil artwork to use for the later color rough and final artwork, the pencil art can be seen with the title of the character backwards before the revision; at one time, the character was reversed. The new title can be seen re-written as Pulling Tooth + Skeleton, whereas the original title was Pulling Tooth, Skeleton; (www.poundart.com).

5. New GPK Artist James Bennett joins the ranks for completing the artwork for cards 426a Quenching QUINCY and 426b Squirtin' BURTON.

6. The same cafe environment used in the 1986 GPK Poster Set, for poster #1 Drink Garbage Pail Kola, is found in the 11th Series cards 422a SHERI Cola and 422b All-Night DINAH; also painted by John Pound picturing the same toilet drink and contents, tablecloth, booth, window curtain, the girl's clothes and ribbon style. Only the corner of the 'House Special' sign is shown in the card background, and it now reads 'Sodas' instead.

7. According to the Color Rough, completed by artist James Warhola, the type of Frisbee used for the artwork was in question -- a 'razor sharp / maybe sawblade or just (a) regular Frisbee?' as feedback from Topps. A regular Frisbee was chosen in the end, pretty much the same stage as the color rough; the Kid's clothing changed a bit with a 'GPK' added to the baseball cap. The names for cards 437a Sliced BRAD and 437b Dead LEE were both used as suggested by the artist.

8. Flowcharts were created For the later GPK sets which showed the art director how the work of the new set was going. It displayed what artist was working on which concept piece and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Often, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The 11th series contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces within the set, were saved for a later series, or never saw the light of day: bagpipe (15th), justice and scales, Nancy Reagan, kid as mop (TCT), VCR (15th), mace steele head (11th), hand puppet pet (15th), flexing muscle - head as muscle (unpublished Bill Wray concept), Jack-in-the-box assassin.
