RELEASE PERIOD : MARCH 1988

The 12th Series Garbage Pail Kids set was due by the Topps art department on January 15th for a March 1988 release. The two print runs of the 12th Series (a/k/a OS12 GPK; Original Series) are exactly the same except for their wrapper variations.  The first print run wrapper has the 25¢ logo and the second print run wrapper is without the 25¢ logo. This is the second set to inlude the Flick It! section on the backs of various cards completed by GPK artist Richard Mcguire. With the GPK franchise in its final run from 1987-1988 and the popularity waning, product is harder to locate, often raising the price per pack at certain locations, increasing the demand for these cards by collectors years later.

The puzzles are back to 21 pieces and the set has two puzzles much like the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th Series sets for card characters 495a Gloppy GLEN and 495b Slop Top TODD for puzzle 'O' and 478a Bizarre LAMAR and 478b Rearranged RAYMOND for puzzle 'P'.

3. The third GPK set to have the PEEL HERE Arrow pointing higher up as compared to the previous PEEL HERE arrow; the remaining GPK sets, the 13th Series through the unpublished 16th Series, will also have this new arrow placement.

4.
The only set with a Green Name Nameplate to go along with the snot humor; for twin cards 486a Chiseler CHAD and 486b JULIUS Sneezer.

5. The third Garbage Pail Kids set Without the Light Blue or Light Pink Nameplate.

6. In 1999, A decade after GPK artist John Pound painted cards 471a Freestyle KYLE and 471b Rad ROD, he took the same concept idea and created an ad for the Black Magic company to advertise for their skateboard griptape Product. The Kid has the original GPK/CPK features.

7. The Wrapper was produced in 1987 and the Cards were manufactured in 1988; the product development such as advertising, boxes and wrappers are always printed well in advance of the card sheets being mastered.

1. Pictured below is one of artist John Pound's Color Rough samples for cards 493a Peanut Butter 'N KELLY and 493b Out-To-Lunch LANCE. Since very few un-revised artwork pieces by Pound are available there are very few changes, if any, that can be found between the tight pencil, color rough and final artwork since they are photocopied and colored and painted over (www.poundart.com). This particular image was evidentally, and possibly inadvertently, flipped for the final card.

2. The Final Artwork backside for cards 490a Kinky KRISTINE and 490b Knot The NORM states the image was to be used for the sides of the display box packaging.

3. The first color rough pictured, a Reworked GPK piece by artist Tom Bunk, was switched up for the final painting; the tongue and teeth were removed and the hair and clothes changed. Bunk often had several different artwork renditions for his color roughs; the second color rough is a sample of one of these various color and clothing variations for cards 500a Winkless WALLY and 500b Sight LES.

4. Artist James Warhola was the third largest contributor to GPK during the original releases. Warhola's Pencil Art for cards
486a Chiseler CHAD and 486b JULIUS Sneezer can be found littered with notes by either Art Spiegelman or Mark Newgarden along with his own notations; James lived in NYC and was able to visit the Topps office or meet up with Art in the city to go over concepts, etc. Comments were jotted on the sidelines pointing out a 'Skylight' at the top of the picture and that the farthest sculputure was a 'H. Moore Type'; this may have been a dedication to Henry Moore (an English sculptor/artist) who passed away in August of 1986 who created sculptures of abstract human form. The other two statues are The Thinker (Le Penseur) by Auguste Rodin, a French sculptor, and David, a Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo. Additional notes mention a 'Younger Kid, full profile, chipping at sculpture' where a chisel and hammer were added to the artwork, to add 'More goo' to the main sculpture and that the 'Back statues will be the same green slime color as his present work".

5. GPK artist James Bennett returns for three Final Artwork images for the 12th Series GPK release; his style of painting and level of detail was not condusive for artwork reduced down to card-size material.

6. The 12th Series FLICK IT! section artwork on the back of the cards which emulates a flipbook-type effect was completed By Richard McGuire. Artist Jay Lynch completed the Comic Backs for the one panel gags working on the color roughs and final artwork, assisted by Gary Whiney, with lettering done by Grass Green.

7. Uncut GPK Sheets were auctioned off of eBay, through the Topps Vault in the Summer of 2006; A front and back image for the 12th series GPK set (# 4-490-05-06-7).

8. Flowcharts were created For the later GPK sets which showed the art director how the work of the new set was going. It displayed what artist was working on which concept piece and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Often, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The 12th Series contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces within the set, were saved for a later series, or never saw the light of day: eyes in mouth (12th), bug in head and hands, 1,000's of tongues (12th).
