RELEASE PERIOD : MARCH 1988 — PRODUCT NUMBER : 490-12

The 12th Series Garbage Pail Kids set was due by the Topps art department on January 15th for a March 1988 release. The two production runs of the 12th Series
aka Original Series 12 GPK, or OS12 for short—are exactly the same except for their wrapper variations.  The first production run wrapper has the '25¢ CHEAP' logo and the second production run wrapper is without this logo. This is the second set to inlude the 'FLICK-IT!' section on the reverse card backs of various cards completed by artist Richard Mcguire. With the GPK brand in its final year, from 1987-1988, and the popularity slowing down, the product is harder to find, raising the price per pack at certain retailers, and increasing the demand for these cards by collectors years later.

ARTISTS : JOHN POUND, TOM BUNK, JAMES WARHOLA, JAMES BENNETT, JAY LYNCH & RICHARD MCGUIRE
WRITERS : JAY LYNCH

88 CARD SET : 82 CARDS + 6 VARIATIONS
CARD VARIATIONS : 469a, 469b, 472a, 472b, 481a, 481b

The New Product Development team continued to have artist James Bennett work on the card fronts, after his OS11 introduction, alongside full-time freelance artists John Pound, Tom Bunk and James Warhola for the set; this would be the last set that Bennett would contribute to. The NPD team would also have artist Richard McGuire work on the 'FLICK IT!' section again; for sets OS11 through OS16.

The third Garbage Pail Kids set in which the Topps Company Logo can be found within the artwork for cards 477a INGRID Inc. and 477b Smokestack ZACH.

The completed Puzzles for the OS12 set are alphabetically sequential with the OS11 set which contained the M-puzzle and N-puzzle. The puzzles are back to being 21 pieces and the set has two puzzles much like the OS2, OS3, OS5, OS9, OS10 and OS11 sets for card characters 495a Gloppy GLEN and 495b Slop Top TODD for the O-puzzle and 478a Bizarre LAMAR and 478b Rearranged RAYMOND for P-puzzle.

The third GPK set to have the PEEL HERE arrow pointing higher up compared to the previous 'PEEL HERE' arrows for OS1 through OS9. Beginning with the OS10 set through OS12, the remaining Garbage Pail Kids releases, for OS13 through the unpublished OS16 sets, will also have this new arrow position.

The only Original Series Garbage Pail Kids set with a green Nameplate to go along with the snot gag for twin cards 486a Chiseler CHAD and 486b JULIUS Sneezer.

The third Garbage Pail Kids set without the traditional light blue or light-pink Nameplate.

In 1999, A decade after Garbage Pail Kids artist John Pound painted the characters for cards 471a Freestyle KYLE and 471b Rad ROD, he took the same concept idea and created an ad for the Black Magic company to advertise for their skateboard griptape product. The character has the original GPK-esque and CPK-like features with toenails on the board for this next-gen iteration.

The Wrapper was produced in 1987 and the cards were manufactured in 1988; the product development such as advertising, boxes and wrappers are printed well in advance of the card sheets being printed.

ANNOTATED NAMES
Explanatory Notations and Definitions of the GPK Nomenclature

Pictured below is one of artist John Pound's Color Rough samples for cards 493a Peanut Butter 'N KELLY and 493b Out-To-Lunch LANCE. Since very few unrevised thumbnail sketches by Pound are available to the public there are very few changes, if any, that can be found between the tight pencil, color rough and final artwork since they are photocopied and colored and painted over. This particular image was evidently, and possibly inadvertently, flipped for the final card.

*

The Final Artwork backside for cards 490a Kinky KRISTINE and 490b Knot The NORM states the image was to be used for the sides of the display box packaging.

*

The first Color Rough pictured, a reworked GPK piece by artist Tom Bunk, was switched up for the final painting; the tongue and teeth were removed and the hair and clothes changed. Bunk often had several different artwork renditions for his color roughs; the second color rough is a sample of one of these various color and clothing variations for cards 500a Winkless WALLY and 500b Sight LES.

*

Artist James Warhola was the third largest contributor to GPK during the Original Series releases. Warhola's Pencil Art for cards 486a Chiseler CHAD and 486b JULIUS Sneezer can be found littered with notes by either Art Spiegelman, Mark Newgarden or both found along with his own notations; James lived in NYC and was able to visit the Topps office or meet up with Art in the city to go over concepts, etc. Comments were jotted on the sidelines pointing out a 'Skylight' at the top of the picture and that the farthest sculputure was a 'H. Moore Type'; this may have been a dedication to Henry Moore (an English sculptor/artist) who passed away in August of 1986 who created sculptures of abstract human form. The other two statues are The Thinker (Le Penseur) by Auguste Rodin, a French sculptor, and David, a Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo. Additional notes mention a 'Younger Kid, full profile, chipping at sculpture' where a chisel and hammer were added to the artwork, to add 'More goo' to the main sculpture and that the 'Back statues will be the same green slime color as his present work".

*

Artist James Bennett returns for three Final Artwork images for the OS12 GPK release; his style of painting and level of detail was not condusive for artwork reduced down to card-size per art director Mark Newgarden.

*

The OS12 FLICK IT! section artwork on the reverse card backs that emulates a flipbook-type effect was completed by artist Richard McGuire. Artist Jay Lynch completed the Comic Backs for the one-panel gags working on the color roughs and final artwork assisted by Gary Whitney with lettering completed by Grass Green.

*

Uncut Garbage Pail Kids Sheets were auctioned off of eBay through the Topps Vault in the Summer of 2006; pictured below is a front and back image for the OS12 GPK set.

*

Possibly coincidental, but there are several GPK characters with a very R. Crumb feel to them. Artist Robert Crumb's artwork tends to display nostalgic contemporary American folk culture, but oftentimes from a satirical viewpoint. Card example 467a Tongue In CHICO and 467b NICK Lick:

*

GPK Flowcharts were created for the later releases which showed the art director how the progress of the new set was going. It displayed what artist was working on which concept piece and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Oftentimes, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The OS12 set contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces within the set, were saved for a later series or never saw the light of day: eyes in mouth (OS12), bug in head and hands, 1,000's of tongues (OS12).
