GUESSTIMATED RELEASE PERIOD : MARCH 1989

      The 16th Series Garbage Pail Kids (a/k/a OS16 GPK; Original Series) art and product development for the series, which included the box, wrapper and display designs, were fully completed by the end of 1988. Production was in the works for test sheets of the cards and boxes in January of 1989 in which an expected release during March of 1989 was estimated. Unfortunately, at the last minute, Topps decided against a another GPK release and shelved the project. The cost of production wasn't sufficient enough in comparison to potential sales if released. The sales of GPK had weakened progressively and the craze had run its course. Topps was working on other non-sport sets at the time along with their higher-selling sport card line. A 16th Series GPK release, unfortunately, would not be profitable. In 1991, Topps had the creators and commissioned artists of the GPK series work on a new GPK-like card set called Trash Can Trolls, although, sales were so poor a 2nd series never materialized. What's left of the original 16th Series GPK is a black and white seperation sheet of the 'A' set of cards salvaged from a Topps dumpster back in 1989 which resurfaced in 2001 for GPK enthusiasts to feast their eyes on for the first time. This would have been the sixth and last series to include the 'Flick It!' section on the backs of various cards completed by GPK artist Richard Mcguire. In late 2002, Topps auctioned off several 16th Series items from their legendary Topps Vault on eBay, the on-line auction house. Some items consisted of front and back test or proof sheets of the series showing the color versions of the 'A' and 'B' cards along with all the names. A wealth of information for collectors which has finally brought the visualization of the unreleased set to reality. In 2003, Topps finally published 29 images from the original, unreleased 16th Series set as part of the All-New Series 1 release. Nine of the remaining twelve images can be found within the 2010 and 2011 Flashback sets and the last three artwork pieces can be found as bonus cards in the Abrams 2012 GPK book.

1.
The second set to have a Slanted GPK Header; cards 636a Slammed SLOAN and 636b KEITH Out show the logo header being slammed in the door along with the character.

2. The Only Image not Drawn By John Pound or Tom Bunk for the 16th Series set, but drawn by James Warhola, are cards 645a Busy BEA and 645b Handy Mandy. This piece was pulled from an earlier GPK set as previoulsy unpublished, and used as a replacement for Tom Bunk's 'gun' unpublished piece (see the Artwork Gallery section). The artwork was also not used in the All-New Series 1 set released in 2003. The image for Busy BEA was finally released in the 2012 Abrams Garbage Pail Kids book detailing the original series artwork for the first five GPK sets as bonus card 3 of 4.

3. Out of the 41 images used for the 16th Series, 20 were Drawn By John Pound. The six images NOT used in the ANS1 set are cards 626a Interracial RACHEL and 626b Stitched STELLA(published in the 2010 Flashback set), 636a Slammed SLOAN and 636b KEITH Out (published in the 2011 Flashback 2 set), 637a Raisin' ELLA and 637b Grape VI (published in the 2010 Flashback set), 642a Scrawled SAUL and 642b Bad ART (published in the 2011 Flashback 2 set), 644a NOAH Parking and 644b PETER Meter (published in the 2011 Flashback 2 set) and 651a Dunkin' DUNCAN and 651b WILL Hung (published in the 2011 Flashback 3 set). A John Pound 'gun' unpublished piece not used in this series was replaced by the artwork for cards 639a GUY Pie and 639b Pepperoni TONI. All images pictured within the Artwork Gallery page. Thanks to collector Adam Whitman for the cleaner images.

4. The Completed Puzzles for the 16th Series are alphabetically sequential with the 15th Series set which contained puzzles 'U' and 'V'. The puzzles have remained at 21 pieces and the set has two puzzles much like the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th Series sets for card characters 624a ROD Rodent and 624b PAT Rat for puzzle 'W' and 654a KYLE Tile and 654b Bathroom TYLER for puzzle 'X'. This is the third set where the 'a' twin is one puzzle preview and the 'b' twin is the other puzzle preview.

5
. The only series where the GPK Header is located In The Center of the Card and contains only one nameplate for cards 630a Stuck On HUGH and 630b Dash Board DENNIS. The 15th Series set contains the character for cards 602a Upside DONNA and 602b Two-Fer JUAN with two nameplates.

6.
After the production of the 16th Series was axed a new parody set called the Trash Can Trolls was released four years later in 1992. Three different Drawings Of the 16th Series were Reworked For the new Trash Can Trolls release pictured below:

GPK cards 628a Double TEX and 628b HOWIE Yowie : TCT cards 15a TEX Wrecks and 15b Shocked SHERRY;

GPK cards 660a TAD Ill and 660b Spillin' GUS : TCT cards 2a Retchin' GRETCHEN and 2b DREW Spew;

GPK cards 661a Stoked STU and 661b Toilet Wave DAVE : TCT cards 4a New Wave DAVE and 4b Flush GORDON

7. Out of the 41 images used for the 16th Series, 20 were Drawn By Tom Bunk. The five images NOT used in the ANS1 set are cards 640a Finger-Paintin' FIFI and 640b LIBBY Stick (published in the 2010 Flashback set), 641a Ticked-Off TUCKER (2012 Abrams GPK book; 2 of 4) and 641b Quittin' Time QUINN (unpublished), 650a Dead FLORA and 650b Fetid FERN (published in the 2011 Flashback 2 set), 658a Trim JIM (2012 Abrams GPK book; 4 of 4) and 658b Groomin' TRUMAN (unpublished) and 659a Idol IRA and 659b KEN Tiki (published in the 2011 Flashback 2 set). One Tom Bunk 'gun' unpublished piece not used in this series was replaced by the artwork for cards 645a Busy BEA and 645b Handy MANDY by James Warhola; the first concept had the character dressed up and was switched to a t-shirt, with the color of the t-shirt and hair changed for the final piece. The image was released within the Abrams GPK calendar in 2013, as card 1 of 4 Failed PHIL, but the hand guns were removed. All images pictured within the Artwork Gallery page.

8. In 1988, before the actual release of the planned 16th Series GPK set, Topps released the Dinosaurs Attack! card set -- a second in the series of 'attack' sets after the Mars Attacks! set from 1962. The exact artwork layout for card #39 Trilobite Terror painted by XnO (Chet Darmstaedter) and penciled by Herb Trimpe (who was working on the G.I. Joe comic at the time) became one of the GPK concepts for cards 657a Crawly RALEIGH and 657b Bugged BOYD painted by John Pound. Per Gary Gerani, the art director for the set, the gentleman pictured is Stan Hart, a MAD magazine writer and at the time, a creative consultant for the Topps company. Coincidently, card #655b within the 16th series set is titled DINO Attacks. The image was later released in 2003 within the All-New Series 1 set for cards 4a Cootie CODY and 4b Buggin' BRANDON.

9. The eleventh set to contain cards with The GPK Acronym found within the artwork. The GPK acronym found on the advertisement sign of cards 622a Neon LEON and 622b Blinkin' BLAKE and on the Mickey Mouse hat of cards 624a ROD Rodent and 624b PAT Rat.

10.
The final images for OS16 cards 651a Dunkin' DUNCAN and 651b WILL Hung show the rope placed under the character's armpits; this may have been edited either at Topps or by John Pound who painted the image. The original tight pencil and color rough (and possibly the final artwork) shows the rope around the character's neck instead, how it was originally intended for the gag concept. Later card images for Flashback Series 3 and the Chrome releases also have the rope under the armpits.

11.
Only 16th Series GPK test items were published -- this particular series is Not Released.
29 images from the 16th Series set was released in 2003 within the All-New Series 1 (ANS1) set, nine of the remaining twelve images can be found within the 2010 and 2011 Flashback sets; and the last three artwork pieces can be found as bonus cards in the Abrams 2012 GPK book. See the Comprehensive Checklist more information.

1
. These unpublished 16th Series Wrapper Artwork were started for the release by Tom Bunk back in early 1989; two different wrapper mock-ups were produced, one picturing the image for cards 624a ROD Rodent and 624b PAT Rat, and the other portraying cards 658a Trim JIM and 659b Groomin' TRUMAN. It is unknown whether one or both of the wrapper concepts would have been used, if so, that would have been the first release with two different wrapper characters.

2. A few Image Changes occured between the color rough or final artwork and the card production for a few of the artwork pieces. Cards 622a Neon LEON and 622b Blinkin' BLAKE have 'BUY' and 'GPKs' separated by a GPK face picking his nose, whereas the final artwork reads 'BUY GPKs' at the top of the sign with a full GPK character at the bottom. The toilet plunger is changed to a toilet-paper roll for cards 625a Flushed FLOYD and 625b Croc O. SID. The different color changes of cards 626a Interracial RACHEL and 626b Stitched STELLA can be found in the bow and the dress. While cards 640a Finger-Paintin' FIFI and 640b LIBBY Stick contain both color and slight character changes -- the perfume bottle is changed from yellow to red and then to blue, while the clean-cut finger now has a finger bone sticking out of it for the final piece. For cards 647a Leggy PEGGY and 647b Obscene Kathleen, the drink table and cigarette are removed from the character for the final version. See the Artwork Gallery section for images of these changes.

3. John Pounds Unpublished 2nd Series GPK Piece, which was also considered for the 6th Series GPK set, was finally used within the unreleased 16th Series set. The image was previously published and used for the GPK Poster set (Poster #7 Eat My Face!, Garbage Pail Kids) and later used for the 16th Series unpublished card 639a GUY Pie and 639b Pepperoni Toni and officially released on card with the All-New Series 1 set in 2003 for cards 9a Cheesy CHARLIE and 9b Pizza Face CHASE. Note the four fingers on the character instead of the three fingers of later character models.

4. Artist Tom Bunk often had several different Artwork Renditions for his color roughs; below are samples of a few of these original versions with subtle various color and clothing variations for the image of cards 623a Tattoo DREW and 623b Skin-Pic KICK with with a different had position, blonde hair, different tattoo locations and no sailor's cap; cards 625a Flushed FLOYD and 625b Croc O. SID with the crocodile's mouth open and other hand flushing the toilet and the Kid with arms facing a different direction with reddish-brown hair; cards 631a Bone Head ED and 631b Missing LINK with baby cub lions rather than rats hanging from the nose bone piercing, various other bones missing (no ear piercings, no necklace or none present in the hair) and no crossed eyes; 641a Ticked-Off TUCKER and 641b Quittin' Time QUINN has the human arm and head in a slightly different position and the Kid is younger and sitting down rather than standing up; cards 643a Twin BILL and 643b RUSS Plus with different color hair and no carnie characters in the background and cards 648a Sushi SUSIE and 648b Terrible TERI in a portrait position (not horizontal) with different color clothing, hat and background -- the puck being a parody of the famous painting The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

5. Pictured below is one of artist John Pound's Color Rough and Pencil Rough samples for cards 637a Raisin' ELLA and 637b Grape VI and 656a Little Barfin' FANNY and 656b BESS Mess (with a few position variations at the bottom of the image). Since very few un-revised artwork pieces by Pound are available there are very few changes, if any, that can be found between the tight pencil, color rough and final artwork since they are photocopied and colored and painted over (www.poundart.com).

6. A few additional pieces by artist Tom Bunk showing Artwork Renditions for his color roughs with subtle various color and clothing variations for cards 638a Sprayed RAY and 638b RHODA Roach jumping out of the kitchen sink and now cowering in the corner; and for cards 659a Idol IRA and 611b KEN Tiki with additional Moai statues and shoulders added to the Kid's head.

7. In late 2002, prior to the All-New GPK releases of 2003, T
he Topps Co. Auctioned off some 16th Series Items from their legendary Topps Vault on the auction house eBay which included: an uncut box sheet portraying the characters 626a Interracial RACHEL and 626b Stitched STELLA and 657a Crawly RALEIGH and 657b Bugged BOYD. The sheet has the date January 24, 1989 written upon it, possibly the date it was reviewed; an uncut correction sheet for the card fronts with the date January 17th, 1989 -- the date it was reviewed. It is interesting to note that the GPK banner for cards 636a Slammed SLOAN and 636b KEITH Out had a straight banner and was 'corrected' to have it be slanted for the final product. The sheet also clearly shows the 6 card variations; and, the two uncut correction sheets for the card backs with the date January 18th, 1989 that shows the green border puzzle 'W' of the 'A' cards for character 624a ROD Rodent and 624b PAT Rat and the yellow border puzzle 'X' of the 'B' cards for character 654a KYLE Tile and 654b Bathroom TYLER. Note that one of the green bordered Puzzle Preview cards is mistakingly yellow.

8. This OS16 correction sheet overlayed with artwork for the Comic Backs (by Mike Boyajian) verifies the Placement of the 19 comics and gives a definitive order within the set. The story unfolds from bottom to top, and left to right on the sheet, containing letters 'A' through 'S', with two 'S' comics at the end for a total of 20 comic backs. The Flick It! pictorial story also reads in the same order with the 'A' sheet containing the odd numbers '1' through '39' and the 'B' sheet containing the even numbers '2' through '40'. Please see the Artwork Gallery above for images of the comic card backs.

9. This unused 16th Series Wrapper rough sketch idea was also created for the release by Tom Bunk as a contender for the wrapper artwork; as seen further above, two other different wrapper mock-ups were produced which Mark Newgarden had amongst his records as being approved, one picturing cards 624a ROD Rodent and 624b PAT Rat and the other portraying cards 658a Trim JIM and 659b Groomin' TRUMAN. This third concept piece from Bunk's records showcases cards 661a Stoked STU and 661b Toilet Wave DAVE as a potential canditate for the wax wrapper front.

10. Artist Jay Lynch completed the pencil roughs and the Final Artwork for the 16th Series card Backs, assisted by Gary Whitney who helped with the final artwork. Jay lynch also wrote the simple gag roughs for the 19 artwork panels -- the idea outline came from Charles Schneider. Due to the storytelling nature of the comics, they were individually lettered and labeled "Continued on Comic _". Animation artist Richard McGuire once again sequenced the 'FLICK IT!' section; the character for cards 628a Double TEX and 628b HOWIE Yowie is used in the pictorial story.

11. For the Comic Backs, the three Topps associates are Len Brown (beard), Mark Newgarden (glasses) and Art Spiegelman (vest).
