GUESSTIMATED RELEASE PERIOD : MARCH 1989 — PRODUCT NUMBER : 490-16

The 16th Series Garbage Pail Kidsaka Original Series 16 GPK, or OS16 for short—product development for the release, which included the box, wrapper, display designs and final arwork, were fully completed by the end of 1988. Production was in the works for test sheets of the cards and boxes in January of 1989 with an expected release during March of 1989 was estimated. Unfortunately, Topps decided against another GPK release for the new year and shelved the project; the cost of production apparently wasn't sufficient enough in comparison to potential sales if released. The GPK brand had sadly weakened progressively and the craze had eventually run its course. Topps was working on other non-sport sets at the time along with their higher-selling sports card line; a OS16 GPK release would not have been profitable.

What's left of the original OS16 GPK is a black and white seperation sheet of the A-name set of cards salvaged from a Topps dumpster back in 1989 which resurfaced in 2001 for collectors to feast their eyes on for the first time. This would have been the sixth and last series to include the 'FLICK IT!' section on the backs of various cards completed by artist Richard Mcguire. In late 2002, Topps auctioned off several OS16 items from their legendary Topps Vault on eBay, the online auction house. Some items consisted of front and back test or proof sheets of the series showing the color versions of the A-name and B-name cards along with all of the nomenclature. A wealth of information for collectors which has finally brought the visualization of the unreleased set to reality.

ARTISTS : JOHN POUND, TOM BUNK, JAMES WARHOLA, JAY LYNCH, RICHARD MCGUIRE, JIM SIERGEY & GARY WHITNEY
WRITERS : JAY LYNCH

88 CARD SET : 82 CARDS + 6 VARIATIONS
VARIATIONS : 621a, 621b, 638a, 638b, 639a, 639b

Artist Jay Lynch brought in friends and artists Gary Whitney and Jim Siergey to assist him on the artwork for the card backs for the set; this would be the second of two known sets that Whitney contributed to GPK and wouldn't necessarily be on the Topps books, and the first known seet for Siergey. The NPD team would also have artist Richard McGuire work on the 'FLICK IT!' section again; for sets OS11 through OS16.

In 1991, Topps had the creators and commissioned artists of the GPK franchise work on a new parody card set called Trash Can Trolls along with several new artists, although, sales were so low that a second installment never materialized. In 2003, Topps finally published 29 images from the original, unreleased OS16 set as part of the All-New Series 1 release. Nine of the remaining twelve images can be found within the 2010 and 2011 GPK Flashback sets and the last three artwork pieces can be found as bonus cards in the Abrams 2012 GPK book.

The second set to have a slanted GPK Header for cards 636a Slammed SLOAN and 636b KEITH Out that show the logo being slammed in the door along with the character.

The only character not completed for the OS16 set by either John Pound or Tom Bunk and painted by artist James Warhola are for cards 645a Busy BEA and 645b Handy Mandy. This piece was previously pulled from an earlier GPK set as unpublished and used as a replacement for Tom Bunk's 'GUN' unpublished piece—see the 'Final Artwork' section. The artwork was also not used for the All-New Series 1 set released in 2003. The image for 'Busy BEA' was finally released within the 2012 Abrams Garbage Pail Kids book detailing the Original Series artwork for the first five releases as bonus card 3 of 4.

Out of the 41 images used for the OS16 set, twenty were painted by artist John Pound. The six images not used in the ANS1 set are cards 626a Interracial RACHEL and 626b Stitched STELLA—published within the 2010 Flashback set, 636a Slammed SLOAN and 636b KEITH Out—published in the 2011 Flashback 2 set, 637a Raisin' ELLA and 637b Grape VI—published in the 2010 Flashback set, 642a Scrawled SAUL and 642b Bad ART—published in the 2011 Flashback 2 set, 644a NOAH Parking and 644b PETER Meter— published in the 2011 Flashback 2 set and 651a Dunkin' DUNCAN and 651b WILL Hung—published in the 2011 Flashback 3 set. A John Pound 'BACKWARD REFLECTION' unpublished piece was replaced by the artwork for cards 639a GUY Pie and 639b Pepperoni TONI; all images pictured within the 'Final Artwork' page. Thanks to collector Adam Whitman for the cleaner images. Within the original concept sketch, the character was holding his hand up in surprise, with his five fingers displayed. Newgarden drew and wrote 'GUN' over this.

The completed Puzzles for the OS16 set are alphabetically sequential with the OS15 set which contained puzzles 'U' and 'V'. The puzzles have remained at 21 pieces and the set has two puzzles the same as the OS2, OS3, OS5 and OS9 through OS15 sets for card characters 624a ROD Rodent and 624b PAT Rat for puzzle 'W' and 654a KYLE Tile and 654b Bathroom TYLER for puzzle 'X'. This is the third set where the 'a' card is one puzzle preview and the 'b' twin card is the other puzzle preview.

The only Original Series release where the GPK Header is located in the center of the card and contains only one nameplate for cards 630a Stuck On HUGH and 630b Dash Board DENNIS. The OS15 set contains the character for cards 602a Upside DONNA and 602b Two-Fer JUAN which contains two nameplates.

After the production of the OS16 release was shelved in early 1989, a new parody set titled the Trash Can Trolls was released four years later in 1992. Three different conepts from the OS16 were used and reworked for the new Trash Can Trolls release for GPK cards 628a Double TEX and 628b HOWIE Yowie vs. TCT cards 15a TEX Wrecks and 15b Shocked SHERRY, for GPK cards 660a TAD Ill and 660b Spillin' GUS vs. TCT cards 2a Retchin' GRETCHEN and 2b DREW Spew and for GPK cards 661a Stoked STU and 661b Toilet Wave DAVE vs. TCT cards 4a New Wave DAVE and 4b Flush GORDON.

Out of the 41 images used for the OS16 release, twenty were painted by artist Tom Bunk. The five images not used in the ANS1 set are cards 640a Finger-Paintin' FIFI & 640b LIBBY Stick—both published in the 2010 Flashback set, 641a Ticked-Off TUCKER—published in the 2012 Abrams GPK book & 641b Quittin' Time QUINN—nomenclature unpublished, 650a Dead FLORA & 650b Fetid FERN—both published in the 2011 Flashback 2 set, 658a Trim JIM—published in the 2012 Abrams GPK book & 658b Groomin' TRUMAN—nomenclature unpublished, and 659a Idol IRA & 659b KEN Tiki—both published in the 2011 Flashback 2 set. One Tom Bunk 'GUN' unpublished piece was replaced by the artwork for cards 645a Busy BEA & 645b Handy MANDY, by artist James Warhola, within the set; the first concept had the character dressed up and was switched to a T-shirt, with the color of the T-shirt and hair changed for the final piece. The image was released within the 2013 Abrams GPK calendar as card 1 of 4 Failed PHIL, but the hand guns were removed.

In 1988, before the actual release of the planned OS16 GPK set, Topps released the Dinosaurs Attack! card set—a second in the series of 'ATTACK' sets after the Mars Attacks! set from 1962. The exact artwork layout for card #39 Trilobite Terror painted by artist XnO (aka Chet Darmstaedter) and penciled by Herb Trimpe—who was working on the G.I. Joe comic at the time—became one of the GPK concepts for cards 657a Crawly RALEIGH & 657b Bugged BOYD, painted by artist John Pound. Per Gary Gerani, the art director for the set, the gentleman pictured is Stan Hart, a MAD magazine writer, and at the time, a creative consultant for the Topps company. Noncoincidentally, card #655b within the OS16 set is titled 'DINO Attacks'. The image was later released in 2003 within the All-New Series 1 set for cards 4a Cootie CODY & 4b Buggin' BRANDON.

The eleventh set to contain cards with the GPK Acronym found within the artwork; the GPK acronym found on the advertisement sign of cards 622a Neon LEON & 622b Blinkin' BLAKE and on the Mickey Mouse hat of cards 624a ROD Rodent & 624b PAT Rat.

The final images for OS16 cards 651a Dunkin' DUNCAN & 651b WILL Hung show the Hangman's Rope placed under the character's armpits; this may have been edited either at Topps, within the Art Department, or by John Pound who painted the image. The original tight pencil and color rough, and possibly the final artwork, shows the rope around the character's neck—how it was originally intended for the gag concept. Later card images for Flashback GPK Series 3 and the Chrome releases also have the rope placed under the character's armpits. Pound had noted the concept stating, "Note - This painting may be in progress, or done, on Friday - J.P."

Only OS16 Test Product were ever published; this particular GPK set was was never released. twenty-nine images from the OS16 set was released in 2003 within the All-New Series 1 ('ANS1') set and nine of the remaining twelve images can be found within the 2010 and 2011 Flashback sets and the last three artwork pieces can be found as bonus cards in the Abrams 2012 GPK book. See the 'Comprehensive Checklist' section for more information.

ANNOTATED NAMES
Explanatory Notations and Definitions of the GPK Nomenclature

The unpublished OS16 sketch Wrapper artwork pictured was started for the intended 1989 Spring release by artist Tom Bunk back in late 1988. Two different wrapper mock-ups were produced, one picturing the image for cards 624a ROD Rodent & 624b PAT Rat and the other portraying cards 658a Trim JIM & 659b Groomin' TRUMAN. It is unknown whether one or both of the wrapper concepts would have been used, if so, that would have been the first release with two different wrapper characters.

*

During the Art Direction process a few changes occured between the color rough or final artwork and the card production for a few of the OS16 pieces. Cards 622a Neon LEON & 622b Blinkin' BLAKE have the subliminal 'BUY' and 'GPKs' message separated by a GPK face picking his nose, whereas the final artwork places the 'BUY GPKs' at the top of the sign with a full GPK character at the bottom. The toilet plunger is changed to a toilet-paper roll for cards 625a Flushed FLOYD & 625b Croc O. SID. The different color changes of cards 626a Interracial RACHEL & 626b Stitched STELLA can be found in the hair bow and the dress. While cards 640a Finger-Paintin' FIFI & 640b LIBBY Stick contain both color and slight character changes—the perfume bottle is changed from yellow to red and then to blue, while the clean-cut finger now has a finger bone sticking out of it for the final piece. For cards 647a Leggy PEGGY & 647b Obscene Kathleen, the drink table and cigarette are removed from the character for the final version. See the 'Final Artwork' page for images to view these changes.

*

Artist John Pounds unpublished Original Series PIZZA-FACE character concept was created for the OS2 set, considered for the OS6 set and was eventually placed within the OS16 set as cards 639a GUY Pie and 639b Pepperoni Toni. The image was previously published and used within the GPK Poster set as #7 'Eat My Face!, Garbage Pail Kids' (released during the OS4 GPK set) and finally printed on card for the All-New Series 1 set in 2003 as cards 9a Cheesy CHARLIE & 9b Pizza Face CHASE. Note the CPK-like eyes and the four fingers on the character instead of the three fingers that followed the GPK character model releases after the OS9 set.

*

Artist Tom Bunk often creates different artwork renditions for his Color Roughs; pictured below are samples of a few of these original versions with very subtle color and clothing changes for the image of cards 623a Tattoo DREW & 623b Skin-Pic KICK with with a different hand position, blonde hair, different tattoo locations and no sailor's cap; cards 625a Flushed FLOYD & 625b Croc O. SID with the crocodile's mouth open and other hand flushing the toilet and the Kid with arms facing a different direction with reddish-brown hair; cards 631a Bone Head ED & 631b Missing LINK with baby cub lions rather than rats hanging from the nose bone piercing, various other bones missing (no ear piercings, no necklace or none present in the hair) and no crossed eyes.

Card characters 641a Ticked-Off TUCKER & 641b Quittin' Time QUINN has the human arm and head in a slightly different position and the Kid is younger and sitting down rather than standing up; cards 643a Twin BILL & 643b RUSS Plus with different color hair and no carnie characters in the background and cards 648a Sushi SUSIE & 648b Terrible TERI in a vertical position and not horizontal with different color clothing, hat and background—the image being a parody of the famous painting The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

Pictured below is one of artist John Pound's Color Rough and Pencil Rough samples for cards 637a Raisin' ELLA & 637b Grape VI and 656a Little Barfin' FANNY & 656b BESS Mess—with a few position variation sketches at the bottom, respectively. Since very few unrevised thumbnail concept sketches by Pound have been released to the public there are very few changes, if any, that can be found between the tight pencil, color rough and final artwork since they are photocopied and painted straight over.

A few additional Color Roughs by artist Tom Bunk showing slight variations when compared to the final artwork for cards 638a Sprayed RAY & 638b RHODA Roach jumping out of the kitchen sink and now cowering in the corner and for cards 659a Idol IRA & 611b KEN Tiki with additional Moai statues and shoulders added to the Garbage Pail Kids' head.

In late 2002, prior to the All-New Series 1 GPK release in 2003, The Topps Co. auctioned off a few OS16 Test Products from their legendary Topps Vault on the auction house eBay which included: an uncut box sheet portraying the characters 626a Interracial RACHEL & 626b Stitched STELLA as the main artwork and 657a Crawly RALEIGH & 657b Bugged BOYD as the box side artwork. The sheet has the date January 24, 1989 scrawled on it which is possibly the date it was reviewed and an uncut correction sheet for the card fronts with the date January 17th, 1989 written upon it. It is interesting to note that the GPK banner for cards 636a Slammed SLOAN & 636b KEITH Out had a straight banner and was 'corrected' to have it be slanted for the final product. The sheet also clearly shows the six card variations. Lastly, two uncut correction sheets for the card backs with the date January 18th, 1989 that shows the green border puzzle 'W' of the 'A' cards for character 624a ROD Rodent & 624b PAT Rat and the yellow border puzzle 'X' of the 'B' cards for character 654a KYLE Tile & 654b Bathroom TYLER. Note that one of the green bordered Puzzle Preview cards is mistakingly yellow.

This OS16 correction sheet overlayed with artwork for the Comic Backs by collector Mike Boyajian verifies the placement of the nineteen comic backs and gives a definitive order within the set. The story unfolds from bottom to top, left to right on the sheet, containing letters 'A' through 'S', with two duplicate 'S' comics at the end for a total of 20 comic backs. The Flick It! pictorial story also reads in the same order with the 'A' sheet containing the odd numbers '1' through '39' and the 'B' sheet containing the even numbers '2' through '40'. Please see the 'Reverse Card' page for images of the comic card backs.

An OS16 mock-up Wrapper rough sketch concept was also created for the release by artist Tom Bunk as a contender for the wrapper artwork; as seen further above, two other different tight wrapper mock-ups were completed in which Mark Newgarden had amongst his records as being approved, one picturing cards 624a ROD Rodent & 624b PAT Rat and the other portraying cards 658a Trim JIM & 659b Groomin' TRUMAN. This third concept piece from Bunk's records showcases cards 661a Stoked STU & 661b Toilet Wave DAVE as a potential canditate for the wrapper.

Artist Jay Lynch completed the pencil roughs and the final artwork for the OS16 reverse card backs assisted by artist Gary Whitney who helped complete the final artwork. Jay lynch also wrote the simple gag roughs for the nineteen artwork panels—the idea outline came from Charles Schneider. Due to the storytelling nature of the comics, they were individually lettered and labeled 'Continued on Comic _'. Animation artist Richard McGuire once again sequenced the 'FLICK IT!' section; the character for cards 628a Double TEX & 628b HOWIE Yowie is used in the story.

The Concept for cards 626a Interracial RACHEL and 626b Stitched STELLA was titled 'INTERRACIAL RACHEL', and noted with 'Black', 'White', and 'Oriental' [Asian] with arrows, and the 'Alt. - Stitch across clothes?" noted at the bottom.

For The Garbage Gang reverse comic card backs the three Topps associates for the first and last two comics are Len Brown—with beard, Mark Newgarden—with glasses, and Art Spiegelman—with vest.
