RELEASE PERIOD : OCTOBER 1985

The production of the 2nd Series Garbage Pail Kids (a/k/a OS2 GPK; Original Series) was giving a green light several months after sales of the 1st Series GPK began to pick up regionally over the New York test market and across the nation.  This initial first print run contained the Messy TESSIE puzzle and the 49b card name Schizo FRAN, but at some point during production the puzzle pieces and puzzle preview cards were changed to the Live MIKE character.  As interest continued to grow within school walls, trading at recess and on school buses, the Garbage Pail Kids sales rapidly increased and a second printing of the 2nd Series GPK was produced to meet this new demand. This particular print run contained the Live MIKE puzzle and the 49b card name Schizo FRAN, but Topps was eventually pressured to change the name to FRAN FRAN, along with the checklist cards.  The term schizophrenic is a clinical term for a genetic condition and often controversial when used as a topic.

1. The first series to have the GPK Header With the registered Trademark Symbol. The trademark (TM) for 'Garbage Pail Kids' was filed on January 1st, 1985 and the registration date was accepted on September 10th, 1985; right in time for the October 2nd Series release.

2. The first set to have a horizontal or Sideways Cards (opposed to vertical or upright); cards 48a Tongue Tied TIM and 48b MARTY Mouthful and later in the set cards 66a MATT Ratt and 66b RACHEL Rodent.

3. The first GPK series to have twin cards with Different Colored card Numbers; cards 46a Rappin’ RON (black number) and 46b RAY Gun (white number).

4. The first of two GPK sets to have a Name Change within a print run; card 49b Schizo FRAN changed to 49b FRAN FRAN.

5. The first series to have exactly the Same Name as another series; card 63a Spacey STACEY and 1st Series card 13b Spacey STACEY.

6. The set has a character with a Nomenclature Error; the nameplate for card 64a Hot SCOTT contains a word (hot) that is the same height as the name (Scott).

7. The series has two cards with the Same First Name; cards 44b One-Eyed JACK and 58a Cracked JACK.

8. The only set that has a Different Sized Name Bar causing the name to be stacked as well as a smaller GPK Header to accommodate the die-cut sticker; the oval die-cut matches and mimics the actual U.S. dollar bill shape; cards 73a Gorgeous GEORGE and 73b Dollar BILL.

9. The first series to have a GPK Logo Within the Artwork itself; the Garbage Pail Kid (singular) name brand can be found on the plaque nameplate of cards 75a Off-The-Wall PAUL and 75b ZACH Plaque.

10. The only GPK set with a Puzzle Change;  puzzle cards switched from the red border puzzle Messy TESSIE character to the red border puzzle Live MIKE character. These two puzzles were meant to be stand-alone puzzles due to the puzzle change, containing no sequential lettering as the 3rd Series.

11. The first series to have a Light Blue Nameplate bar; dark blue, magenta , yellow, red, and light blue namplates are present ... no light pink nameplate in this series.

12. Matte Finish card Backs (a non-gloss applicition) have been found in both print runs of the 2nd Series GPK; a printing anomoly.

13. Since the series has a blue theme, ADAM Bomb's blue suit has been changed to red for the wrapper image; the Red Suit on the wrapper stays that color for the OS3-OS5 releases.

ANNOTATED NAMES

Explanatory Notations and Definitions
of the GPK Names

1. An Unpublished Painting completed by John Pound, showcasing a 'pickled' Kid, never made the 2nd Series release. The character was later re-worked in 1998 for a parody set titled the Meanie Babies (spoofing the Beanie Babies) by John Pound who was commissioned by Comic Images to draw the entire series; card titled #6 PICKLES. The unpublished artwork was finally released in 2010 for the GPK Flashback within the LOST GPK subset as cards 65a Pickled PETE and 65b Formaldehyde FRED.

2. Another Unpublished Painting finished by John Pound, showcasing a 'pizza face' Kid, never made the 2nd Series set and considered for the 6th Series Garbage Pail Kids set. The image ended up being used within the GPK Poster set as poster #7 Eat My Face!, Garbage Pail Kids and later used as the 16th Series (once again) unpublished cards 639a GUY Pie and 639b Pepperoni Toni to replace a rejected piece of artwork. The character finally ended up being published as a card in 2003 for the All-New Series 1 (ANS1) cards 9a Cheesy CHARLIE and 9b Pizza Face CHASE; notice the four fingers instead of three fingers of later sets.

3. The Award & License Card Backs concept came from an older Topps set titled Funny Licenses and ideas from the 1968 Kooky Awards die-cut sticker set. However, the artwork by Tom Bunk and the writing by Mark Newgarden is all new, original artwork and writing. There are three unpublished card backs that can be seen within the Artwork Gallery section above. These three backs were re-created for the Chrome OS2 set released in 2014; two faithfully restored and the third to the best of Topps' ability due to the quality of the scanned reference. The Ribbon Artwork on the backside of the card was completed by Mark Newgarden.

4. The Reverse Artwork for the 2nd Series card backs were completed twice by GPK artist Tom Bunk. The original artwork (to the left) was finished using markers but the NPD (New Product Development), Mark Newgarden and/or Art Spiegelman, wanted the card backs to be re-done and finished with watercolors to give them a lighter, more vibrant appearance which became the final reverse artwork for the card backs (to the right). There are subtle differences between the different images; the Sore Loser Award reverse artwork for cards 73a Gorgeous GEORGE and 73b Dollar BILL had the background changed from pink to yellow, the ground color changed from yellow to grey, the pant color became solid, the shoes from caramel to brown and the color for the darts was switched up. The previously unpublished License to Drive Your Parents Crazy reverse artwork had the dog and window removed, paint splotch colors changed up and the background parents were painted as well; the notes on the marker edition has an arrow with the color 'Green' pointing to the father figure and an arrow with the color 'Pink' pointing to the mother figure -- the opposite happened for the watercolor edition. The artwork was published for the reverse artwork for the OS2 Chrome cards 77a Ghastly ASHLEY and 77b Acne AMY in 2014. More reverse artwork can be located within the 'Artwork Gallery' section above.

5. The Original Concept Piece for the 1st Series card 8a ADAM Bomb and 8b Blasted BILLY had the character depicted as President Ronald Reagan pushing the red nuke with the mushroom cloud in the background; Art Spiegelman suggested the cloud come out of the characters head instead. The character was later reworked and used in the 2nd Series set placed behind a podium for cards 46a Rappin' RON and 46b RAY Gun; the original Mark Newgarden concept piece had him holding a set of guns that were removed for the final artwork. The image was not painted for the OS1 set but realized for the OS2 set; image taken from the 1989 BLAB! article Bubblegum Wars with Mark Newgarden.

6. Per John Pound's website; the characters for cards 58a Cracked JACK and 58b Soft Boiled SAM had a minor Color Variation for the hatching fledgling. A color rough was created picturing the hatchling with a red body, but a yellow chick color was chosen instead for the final artwork image.

7. In 1987, Topps started production on a 2nd Series GPK Mini set following the release of the 9th U.S. series; most likely measuring 2 1/8 x 3 inches. The Topps Vault on eBay showcased the unpublished mini set (production code 4-490-05-03-7) with several acetate test cards. This may have been a way for Topps to capitalize on the finalized lawsuit and release a few additional sets with older images but with the new GPK banner; it is unknown why the set was unreleased, or why they did not start with the 1st Series set. Card 73a Gorgeous GEORGE seems to be in mid-edit, showcasing the outline of the normal nameplate, along with the double-stacked nameplate. The set, overall, has a very international feel to it.

8. During the release of the 2nd and 3rd Series sets, with the initual interest of GPK growing, Topps came up with a blanket Letter that touched upon the main questions asked by collectors, offering a way to obtain the cards through local hobby shops (the reverse side of the letter contained a few hobby shop addresses including Roxanne Toser of Non-Sport Update when she was still dealing and selling to the public and before she started the nonsport publication). The letter gave little insight behind the creators of the GPK and mentioned Topps did not accept concept ideas from the public. A local rumor mentioned a 58b Soft-Boiled SAM puzzle could be completed, my original letter in 1986 came back with 'Other: Aaron, your friends are kidding you, there is no completed puzzle for the card Soft-Boiled SAM'.

9. Per John Pound's Notes and records card #6 Hooked on Garbage Pail Kids was a previously unpublished 2nd Series artwork piece later used within the Giant 5x7 Garbage Pail Kids set. The artwork does have a slightly different feel to the rest of the 2nd Series characters and works well on a postcard size format. 3rd Series cards 93a DREW Blood and cards 93b Bustin' DUSTIN and 98a CHARLOTTE Web and 98b DIDI T. were created during the 2nd Series period but did not make the set.

10. Uncut GPK Sheets were auctioned off of eBay through the Topps Vault in the Summer of 2006; A front image for the 2nd Series Garbage Pail Kids set with production number 4-495-05-01-5. This uncut sheet contains the standard 44 card sheet formula that Topps uses during printing (132 cards per sheet), with the inclusion of two images due to the rejection of artwork (or no exclusion at all) and replaced with a duplicate image. You can see that there are two of card titles #42 and #45, but since #45 has the same backs, only card #42 is a variation for this release since it has two different backs.

11. Garbage Pail Kids Chewy Candies were produced in 1986 after the release of the 1st and 2nd series GPK sets. The candy product used various artwork from the 1st and 2nd Series sets as image mascots on the candy wrappers. Three assortment of flavors can be found; cherry (blue and red wrapper), grape (yellow and purple wrapper) and strawberry (pink and green wrapper), along with an assortment of GPK characters for each color wrapper variation. The images are very similar to the rendered artwork found on the GPK wax wrappers; however, the NPD (New Product Development) department at Topps in the '80s was responsible for the GPK cards, the art deparment created the packaging and images for licensed products, oftentimes using in-house art staff or other freelance artists not associated with the GPK franchise. Although Tom Bunk worked on the image rendering for the OS1 thru OS16 wax wrappers, the artist for the Chewy Candy product was George Evans (see middle image below). The product was made in Argentina (South America) by the Stani company for Confex, Inc., located in New Jersey and licensed by the Topps company. OS2 characters located on the wrappers include (not all-inclusive): 42b Muggin' MEGAN, 44b One-Eyed JACK, 49b Fran FRAN, 51a RUSSELL Muscle, 51b BRETT Sweat, 55a Hairy GARY, 55b Brutal BRAD, 56b Brutal BRIDGET, 61a Jolly ROGER, 61b Pegleg PETER and 62b CHRIS Hiss; see the OS1 GPK History section for the 1st Series characters and unused images.

42a PATTY Putty and 42b Muggin' MEGAN
NOTE: WHITE DIAPER COLOR CHANGED TO PINK

44a SY Clops and 44b One-Eyed JACK
NOTE: WHITE DIAPER COLOR CHANGED; BROWN EYE NOTED AS RED ON CONCEPT ARTWORK BUT CHANGED TO BLUE

12. A set of twelve GPK Buttons were released in 1986 with seven 1st Series images and five 2nd Series images which, instead of a nameplate, contained an expresstion. Button #6 BLESS YOU! portrayed the image for card character 45a Leaky LINDSAY and 45b Messy TESSIE, however, the snot running from her nose is missing; the characters smile is slightly off, looking more like human lips rather than the CPK smile. Images for 1st series characters 8a ADAM Bomb and 8b Blasted Billy and for the 2nd series characters 42a PATTY Putty and 42b Muggin' MEGAN as well as 45a Leaky LINDSAY and 45b Messy TESSIE can be found as the button images. for the GPK Button box artwork.
