Art directors Art Spiegelman and Mark Newgarden, both from the New Product Development ("NPD") department, created the card-type for the OS4 Garbage Pail kids card backs along with artist Tom Bunk who created the reverse 'WANTED' card artwork using water colours. Bunk also started working on the front of the cards for OS3 release. The 'WANTED' backs use the same blue and red colors as the GPK logo on the card fronts. Due to the introduction of completed puzzles to the GPK franchise during the OS2 set the amount of reverse card artwork is greatly reduced. Seventeen individually known pieces of artwork were completed for the OS4 set with no image repeats within the series due to the enlarged puzzle plus one unpublished concept piece.

Overall, the OS4 card backs had two to three more lines of allowed text than the OS3 set. The OS3 and OS4 card backs were modeled after the Topps Wanted Posters sets released in 1967 (0-420-91-01-7) and 1968 (UK), in 1975 (0-419-21-01-5) and 1976 (UK) and in 1980 (0-450-21-01-0 wrapper; 4-450-26-01-0 poster), along with the Wanted Stickers set released in 1975 (0-498-21-01-4; packaging produced in 1974). All 'Wanted' artwork was created by Jack Davis and re-coloured for every release with some updated card-type; due to space, the 'Stickers' do not always contain all of the original card-type from previous iterations. The posters measure roughly 20 x 24 inches.

The NPD Department would create the revised artwork and card type, but the Art Department was in charge of the overall design and would produce the composition of the front side and card backs as well as the promotional material and packaging. Comp images were generated to help guide the final card type design and artwork placement. The mash-up mock-up for 'FATSO' contains generic straight lines for most of the card type and copyright line; the original Wanted Stickers title would eventually become 'FAT SLOB' for the OS4 set. The image showcases the OS3 'PRINCIPAL' final artwork image by Tom Bunk, albeit the character is sporting a brown suit instead of green. The 'WANTED FOR GROSS NEGLIGENCE' is misspelled with the word 'CROSS' and would eventually become 'FOR GROSS NEGLECT' for the aforementioned OS4 card back. A notation at the bottom of the sheet reads 'COMP FOR GENERAL LOOK ONLY' and applied to both the OS3 and OS4 reverse card design. The NPD Department would give feedback at a later stage and eventually give the final 'okay'.

Card No. 128 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 128a Sloshed JOSH and 128b Low CAL.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card and Color Rough; artwork labeled #18.
Updated Reverse Card Type: MARK NEWGARDEN and ART SPIEGELMAN

JACK DAVIS: Wanted Stickers (1974) and Wanted Posters (1980), not applicable.

One of two new 'WANTED' titles for the OS4 set that was not based off of any known original Wanted Stickers (1974) or Wanted Posters (1980) Art by JACK Davis. The following Wanted Stickers (1974) or Wanted Posters (1980) titles not used: Disc Jockey (color rough stage only), Baby, Maid, Telephone Operator, Taxi Cab Owner, Door-to-Door Salesman, Butcher, T.V. Repairman, Policeman or Class Flirt.

In general, the OS4 set has 2 to 3 more lines of card-type (or text) added to the backside of the cards compared to the OS3 release; thus, allowing more bullet points, 'warnings' and ridicule.

The character has had at least seven recent murder attempts: a kick to the head, a hachet to the head, an arrow to the head, bullet holes to the back, a knife to the back, dynamite stuck to his backside (instead of a 'Kick Me' sign) and the victim's belonging set on fire (book of 'Poems'). In comparison to the color rough, the one stick of dynamite is no longer in the character's coat pocket (switched to a sailor suit school uniform), and the footprint treadmark is not present on the final artwork.

Card No. 129 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 129a Second Hand ROSE and 129b Trashed TRACY.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card, Color Rough & Final; artwork labeled #7.
Updated Reverse Card Type: MARK NEWGARDEN and ART SPIEGELMAN

JACK DAVIS: Wanted Stickers (1974) and Wanted Posters (1980), if applicable.

GPK card-type: 'POSTMAN' has been updated to 'MAILMAN' and the outdoor mailbox scene now takes place in the building's post office lobby with a characer eyewitness, witnessing the total invasion of privacy. The little girl's one-piece dress now contains a heart symbol to match the love letter. ALL card-type has been completely changed from the Wanted Stickers source material.

The original color artwork was created using watercolors that print lighter on card than other types of paint or marker. The artwork is labeled '7'; most likely the seventh piece approved for the set. A note by Mark Newgarden at the top simply states 'LETTER', 'PINK', but the heart was made red and the letter yellow; perhaps the pink would've further implied the juicy love letter content.
Wanted Sticker card-type: Contains a 'REWARD FOR CAPTURE' and reference to deliving "mail 5 weeks late".

Card No. 130 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 130a NICKY Hickey and 130b HANK E. Panky.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card & Color Rough; artwork labeled #16.
Updated Reverse Card Type: MARK NEWGARDEN and ART SPIEGELMAN

JACK DAVIS: Wanted Stickers (1974) and Wanted Posters (1980), if applicable.

GPK card-type: ALL card text has been updated . "WANTED For Banning Free Speech" has been changed to "... Prohibiting Free Speech" and "ALIAS: The old bag" has been changed to "Alias: THE OLD WOMBAT". A whole library background scene, with more 'quiet' signs, has been added. Instead of a shooshing gesture, the GPK version has the librarian all-out screaming at the young boy. The librarian is a bit heftier, younger, with a tight dark-haired bun.

Wanted Poster card-type: "For asking readers to leave because their shoes squeak" is an extra bullet point (cut off). Compared to the Wanted Sticker, the librarians hair has been dyed brown, the puff of air is no longer white, but see-through, and the image is zoomed in, cutting off some of the kid's head and librarian's hair.

Card No. 132 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 132a Bony TONY and 132b Unzipped ZACK.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card & Color Rough; artwork labeled #1.
Updated Reverse Card Type: MARK NEWGARDEN and ART SPIEGELMAN

JACK DAVIS: Wanted Stickers (1974) and Wanted Posters (1980), if applicable.

GPK card-type: ALL card text has been updated. "WANTED For Neglect of Duty" has been changed to "... Dereliction of Duty" and "Also Guilty of the Following Crimes—" changed to "Also wanted in 37 states for: ". The child is jumping out the window rather than swinging from the curtains.

Wanted Poster card-type: "Watching the T.V. set 5 hours... watching the baby 5 minutes" and "Smooching with boy friend and ignoring the kids" are extra bullet points on the poster. Compared to the Wanted Stickers release, the Wanted Poster has been completely recolored.

Card No. 135 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 135a ROCK E. Horror and 135b MARTY Gras.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card and Color Rough; artwork labeled #14.
Updated Reverse Card Type: MARK NEWGARDEN and ART SPIEGELMAN

JACK DAVIS: Wanted Stickers (1974) and Wanted Posters (1980), if applicable.

GPK card-type: "(AND YOURS)" added to "GABLING WITH HIS HEALTH!" The topic on 'ARSON' is expanded on and "Operating a smokestack without a permit" added. A pipe, cigar and more smoking holes added to the character given him a very green, sickly appearance.

Wanted Sticker card-type: Contains the full "WANTED For Polluting the Atmosphere" which was shortened and changed to "WANTED For Air Pollution" for the GPK card-type. The character is surrounded by a billowing cloud of cigarette smoke. The individual is holding a lit match and a half pack of cigarettes and only smoking cigarettes.

Card No. 135 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 140a Mouth PHIL and 140b Tooth LES.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card and Color Rough; artwork labeled #2.
Updated Reverse Card Type: MARK NEWGARDEN and ART SPIEGELMAN

JACK DAVIS: Wanted Stickers (1974) and Wanted Posters (1980), if applicable.

GPK card-type: ""... the injection won't hurt!" changed to "... this won't hurt". "(+ Losing!) added to the "Gambling" topic. A third bullet point and 'warning' added to the image. "(HA HA!)" added to "WANTED For Needling Patients". The nurse whistles while she works, listening to a cassette player, with her eyes closed. The patient has 5 needles sticking into his body and one has been pierced through his arm.

Wanted Sticker card-type: Contains only two bullet points and compared to the GPK image, the patient remains unharmed, at least physically, but possibly not mentally.

Card No. 142 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 142a BRUCE Moose and 142a Hunted HUNTER.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card and Color Rough; artwork labeled #13.

Repairman, Policeman or Class Flirt.

In general, the OS4 set has 2 to 3 more lines of card-type (or text) added to the backside of the cards compared to the OS3 release; thus, allowing more bullet points, 'warnings' and ridicule.

The character has had at least seven recent physical assualts by his rowdy students: a cherry bomb, a flaming boot and flaming paper, a chucked tin can, an arrow to the head, bullet holes to the head, a fountain pen to the back, a carpenter nail (w/ an 'I AM STIPUD' sign), and a spit ball.

Card No. 145 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 145a DALE Snail and 145a Crushed SHELLY.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card, Color Rough & Final; artwork labeled #4.
Updated Reverse Card Type: MARK NEWGARDEN and ART SPIEGELMAN

JACK DAVIS: Wanted Stickers (1974) and Wanted Posters (1980), if applicable.

GPK card-type: The first entry 'sardines' has been changed and all text updated. Both drivers are smoking and visually pay homage to the initial (packed in like) 'sardines' gag. Def'n: without enough room to move around. ie. A large crowd of reporters was crammed/packed like sardines into a small room.

The original color artwork was created using watercolors that print lighter on card than other types of paint or marker. The artwork is labeled '4'; most likely the fourth piece approved for the set. The bus driver is seen with both hands on the steering wheel, but kicking his passengers back with steel-studded shoes. The Wanted Stickers character has a 'I could care less' and 'cannot be bothered' grimace.

JACK DAVIS: Wanted Stickers (1974) and Wanted Posters (1980), if applicable.

GPK card-type: "WANTED!: For Ptomaine Poisoning" changed to "WANTED For Nutritional Obscenities"; although 'ptomaine' was worked into the new text. "Cafeteria Cook" changed to "Lunch Room Cook". The first bullet point has been re-worked, but the rest of the card-type is new.

Compared to the Wanted Sticker, the fried green glop has been changed to a mystery stew (shoe, tin can, bone, sock, etc.) with a cafeteria scene background.

Card No. 150 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 150a Hairy HARRIET and 150a Bushy BERNICE.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card & Color Rough; artwork labeled #6.

GPK card-type: "(By simply flaring his right nostril)" added to "Inciting a riot", "Stealing chairs" updated. Remaining text is all new with a 'Notice' (proceed with restraint and cover all sore spots) also added.

Compared to the Wanted Sticker, the character retains his polka-dot bow tie and water-squirting flower and gains a checkered suit (instead of striped), wacky eyes hat with pinwheel, crazy glasses and an interested innertube inflater to the back of his head.

Card No. 158 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 158a Meltin' ELTON, 158b CRYSTAL Gale and 158b Ig LOU.

GPK card-type: The "Drunk & Disorderly" bullet point has been changed. ALL text has been updated and a 'warning' added. "(Claws)" added to "For Carrying Concealed Weapons" for clarification.

Compared to the Wanted Sticker, instead of laying in the owner's destroyed bed, the cat is seen in a room where all life has perished. 3 fish, 1 bid, 1 mouse and a plant. The cat is cleaning its straight teeth with a toothpick (with pinky up). The feline has all four paws on the floor for the color rough, licking his chomps instead of picking his teeth.

Card No. 159 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 159a Catty KATHY and 159b KITTY Litter.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card and Color Rough; artwork labeled #3.
Updated Reverse Card Type: MARK NEWGARDEN and ART SPIEGELMAN

JACK DAVIS: Wanted Stickers (1974) and Wanted Posters (1980), if applicable.

GPK card-type: "For Gross Negligence" has been changed to "For Gross Neglect" and "Fatso" changed to "Fat Slob". The bullet points have been completly updated with new text. The original character is reminiscent of OS1 26a Slobbie ROBBIE and 26b Fat MATT with the face of OS2 65a Shrunken ED and 65b Cheeky CHARLES. Compared to the Wanted Sticker, the character still has button-up flannel checkered shirt that's still being tested, but the kids and food has been removed, and the ficial features drastically changed.

The original color rough had the character digging into a fully stocked refrigerator with opened packaging in the background. The art director notes on the concept artwork how they wanted the character to be presented with front and side WANTED profile positions instead.

Card No. 160 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 160a Decapitated HEDY and 160b Formalde HEIDI.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card, Color Rough & Final; artwork labeled #15.
Updated Reverse Card Type: MARK NEWGARDEN and ART SPIEGELMAN

The original color artwork was created using watercolors that print lighter on card than other types of paint or marker. The artwork is labeled '15'; most likely the fifteenth piece approved for the set. Compared to the Wanted Sticker, the mechanic is seen still holding the 'Repair Bill' but pointing at the car heap intead of holding a wrench; said wrench now located in the pocket of the mechanic's overalls for the final artwork along with a grease towel.

Card No. 161 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 161a Shorned SEAN and 161b Hy GENE.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card and Color Rough; artwork labeled #8.
Updated Reverse Card Type: MARK NEWGARDEN and ART SPIEGELMAN

JACK DAVIS: Wanted Stickers (1974) and Wanted Posters (1980), if applicable.

GPK card-type: "(Get It?)" added to the title "WANTED For Kid. . .Napping" to drive the joke home. The first bullet point re-worked and "Impersonating a log!" changed to "Impersonating yeast" — the orginal gag makes more sense with the new image; 'sawing logs' = sleeping. (Fill in Name of Lazy Person) changed to (... Lazy Kid) and "Snore" switched to "Yawn" for the 'WARNING'.

Compared to the Wanted Sticker, the classroom scene has been completely removed, along with the student's belongings; book, bandaids, pencil, glasses and slingshot. The character had overall bibs for the color rough and the saw & log were added for the final artwork to assist with the gag.

Card No. 165 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 165a DANA Druff and 165b Flakey FAY.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card and Color Rough; artwork labeled #11.
Updated Reverse Card Type: MARK NEWGARDEN and ART SPIEGELMAN

JACK DAVIS: Wanted Stickers (1974) and Wanted Posters (1980), if applicable.

Compared to the color rough, The yellow bow has been replaced with a blue one for the final artwork and the mouse looks a bit more like Mickey Mouse. Not sure what type of 'bone' the mouse is teasing and tempting the dog with in the color rough(!).

Compared to the Wanted Sticker, the feral, fierce and ferocious snarling dog has been replaced by a scaredy-cat canine for the GPK version, frighted by a wee clothed mouse. For the color rough, abogus 'Beware of Dog!' sign has been planted in the yard, but changed to 'Beware of the Dog!' for the final version.

Card No. 166 — Reverse card artwork for the characters 166a Gored GORDON and 166b No Way JOSÉ.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Card and Color Rough; artwork labeled #12.

GPK card-type: The first bullet point remains the same but "Working as slugglishly as your drains!" changd to "Working as slowly as the drain he's "repairing"". The third bullet point is new material and the 'warning' reworked.

Compared to the Wanted Sticker, the plumber is still working with a pipe wrench but now humorously holding onto an umbrella ... floating in an inner-tube. In very Bunk-style, a message in a bottle is seen floating nearby, a shark fin has broken the surface of the water, and a clothed mouse on a mini raft is sailing by. Evertying remained intact for the transition to the final artwork.

Card No. NA — Unpublished.
GPK Artwork: TOM BUNK — Color Rough; artwork labeled #17.
Updated Reverse Card Type: NONE

JACK DAVIS: Wanted Stickers (1974) and Wanted Posters (1980), if applicable.

GPK card-type: no card text since no card character created, but in comparison to the Wanted Sticker, the character has become quite younger, sporting a mohawk. Instead of pounding the record player with his fist, the GPK character is smashing the turntable with a hammer, one is stabbed with a knife, and the third is being spun with the heel of his boot/shoe. The kid disc jockey is also sporting several pieces of broken record in his face. Perhaps he's signalling the 3pm afternoon bell for school.

The following Wanted Stickers (1974) or Wanted Posters (1980) titles not used: Disc Jockey (color rough stage only), Baby, Maid, Telephone Operator, Taxi Cab Owner, Door-to-Door Salesman, Butcher, T.V. Repairman, Policeman or Class Flirt.
