RELEASE PERIOD : AUGUST 1986 — PRODUCT NUMBER : 490-5

The three production runs for the 5th Series Garbage Pail Kids set, aka Original Series 5 or OS5, for short, are exactly the same except for their wrappers and box codes. The first production run wrapper contains a regular red color or maroon GPK header and the '25¢ CHEAP' logo with the -05- wrapper code and -03- box code. The second production run wrapper contains a maroon color GPK header without the '25¢ CHEAP' logo and with the -07- wrapper code and -03- box code. The third production run wrapper also contains a red color GPK header without the '25¢ CHEAP' logo and with the -08- wrapper code and -05- box code. The missing, sequentially numbered -06- wrapper code and -04- box code is a fifth production run for the 4th Series Garbage Pail Kids set manufactured in Canada along with the third 5th Series production run.

These additional print runs were caused by the growing popularity of the card craze during its peak production time, fed by the free advertising and exposure due to the ongoing court proceedings between Topps and OAA during the course of the lawsuit. The set contains no additional artist besides John Pound and Tom Bunk for this release and would introduce the very popular 'FILE CARDS' for the reverse card backs painted by artist Tom Bunk.

PRODUCTION ARTWORK — BITS & BOBS BACKSTORY —ANNOTATED NOMENCLATURE

The last Garbage Pail Kids set to have the iconic character ADAM Bomb on the Wrapper and packaging for the Original Series run.

The first set to have a GPK Header and Nameplate aligned to the left-hand side of the horizontal card in order to be centered with the character for cards 185a FRAN Furter and 185b Hot DOUG.

The completed Puzzle Preview cards for the OS5 orange bordered D-puzzle and purple bordered E-puzzle are sequential with the OS4 set which contained the C-puzzle. The puzzles continue to have 21 pieces and the set is back to having two puzzles similar to the OS3 release. Card characters 168a Handy RANDY & 168b JORDAN Nuts and 169a DEE Faced & 169b TERRI Cloth are found sequentially next to each other within the set and both contain variation backs.

The OS5 GPK release contains the light blue Nameplate; no light pink nameplate is found within the set.

The second set to contain cards with the GPK Acronym found within the artwork which is located on the super-hero suit of cards 172a NAT Nerd & 172b CLARK Can't. The comic-book storage box for indexed 'COMICS M-N' was chosen by John Pound in honour of the then GPK editor and art director, Mark Newgarden, who signs his correspondence with his initials 'MN', even to this day.

The set contains a concept from the previously released Big Bad Buttons Gross Bears set. The final artwork was completed by artist Tom Bunk but was unpublished at the time; published as #L1 value box card within the 2016S1 GPK set. Cards 189a BRENDA Blender & 189b Juicy LUCY have several character card from previous sets: The green OS3 wrapper containing the rendered artwork for OS1 character 8a ADAM Bomb & 8b Blasted BILLY, an image of itself for cards 189a and 189b, the OS3 cards 115a Warmin' NORMAN & 115b Well Done SHELDON and OS3 cards 90a Stoned SEAN & 90b Thick VIC; all character images painted by artist Tom Bunk.

The first set with an inverted Nameplate to go along with the optical illusion imagery for cards 184a Upside Down DONALD & 184b HUGH Turn. Kids and comics continues to be popular and is a reoccuring theme with Garbage Pail Kids and makes a reappearance as comic card backs starting with the OS6 set.

Although the Salvador Dalí parody image for cards 196a Dangling DOLLY & 196b Surreal NEAL has been cropped to card format, the tan object to the left can be seen as another GPK face within the final artwork.

The set contains the first card artwork with unofficial Signatures; both by artist John Pound. The Topps Co. has never listed any specific artwork credit for the GPK releases. The artwork for cards 182a Tagged TAD & 182b Sprayed WADE has 'J.P. 1986' spray painted across the entire character which is artist John Pound's initials. The artwork for cards 192a Delicate TESS & 192b Hamburger PATTIE have 'MEAT 35¢/POUND' written on the sign; the double meaning is the price of meat per pound and for the artist's last name, Pound, who often autographs his first name in cursive and then prints 'POUND' in all caps.

The first set to contain a Wacky Packages product parody pictured within the artwork for cards 200a Fluoride FLOYD & 200b Dental DANIEL (both pictured further below). The character is holding a tube of toothpaste called 'CRUST', much like the OS1 Wacky Package sticker.

The stickers for 200a Fluoride FLOYD & 200b Dental DANIEL can also be found with a regular and inverted Die Cut for both cards; they seem to be pretty rare as far as error cards go. The phenomenon often occurs during the resetting of the die-cut(ting) plates in later production runs of the series. Thanks to GPKStoreandMore.com for the scans.

The first GPK release to have variation Reverse Card backs that are puzzle pieces.

PRODUCTION ARTWORK — BITS & BOBS BACKSTORY — CARD ANNOTATION

The first Color Rough concept by artist Tom Bunk for cards 167a MICK Dagger & 167b Slayed SLADE originally had a turban and loincloth-wearing sword-swallower. Topps art director and editor Mark Newgarden made a few comments; to have the character be a circus performer with a top hat located outside and standing on the ground with no stage spotlight. The second concept had a night sky and later changed to an all yellow background for the final artwork. Newgarden made several more notations; to add a wagon and have the background be 'shadow of color' rather than detailed. The yellow spotlight makes an appearance for the OS6 red wrapper.

~
Per artist John Pound's website the worms for cards 173a Menaced DENNIS & 173b Wormy SHERMY had a minor Color Variation; a color rough was created portraying the worms painted in a red color rather than the final green color. The right pencil by Pound for cards 204a JULES Drools & 204b KIT Spit had the suggested name of Droolin' JULIAN that was not used by Topps. A color variation and wardrobe change happened for cards 200a Flouride FLOYD & 200b Dental DANIEL; the character has blonde hair instead of brown and is wearing a white muscle-shirt instead of a pajama top.

A previously Unpublished 'world war' image by artist John Pound was painted in 1986 and was intended for the OS5 set but pulled from production. Possibly due to the Cold War that stretched from 1979 through 1985 and its lasting after affects. The final artwork was finally published in 2010 for the Flashback Series 1 set as Lost GPK cards 67a Global WARREN & 67b AL Pocalypse and in 2013 for the OS1 Chrome set as Lost GPK cards L6a & L6b.

The Original Artwork by artist Tom Bunk for cards 174a FRED Thread & 174b Repaired REX displayed the character standing up sewing his leg together, a missing eye, blonde hair, with a bone and guts sticking out of the character. The final artwork had the characters sitting down CPK-style, two eyes, brown hair and the innards replaced with cotton stuffing. Per Tom Bunk, "Topps wanted the nasty guts to be replaced with nice cottonballs".
The image was finally published in 2015 for the 30th Anniversary set as a Lost Alternate Art subset card. A printing error can be found on card 174b Reparied REX near the card number, referred to by collectors as a ghost '10', or upside down 'OF', located within wrapper pack 0-490-21-05-6.

A previously Unpublished 'nuclear war' image by artist John Pound was painted in 1986 and was intended for the OS5 set but pulled from production. Possibly due to the Cold War that stretched from 1979 through 1985 and its lasting after affects. The final artwork was finally published in 2011 for the Flashback Series 3 set as Lost GPK cards 69a Shadowy SHELIA and 69b Vaporized VAL and in 2013 for the OS1 Chrome set as Lost GPK cards L5a & L5b.

A previoulsy Unpublished 'Presidential' image by artist John Pound was painted in 1986 and was intended for the OS5 set, but removed from production. A pair of slick proofs went up for sale on eBay through the Topps Vault during April of 2005. The piece was originally intended for the OS3 set whose character had one bullet hole through the hat and holding a 'PLAYBILL' which was changed to 'SLAYBILL' and revised for the OS5 card with the hat now having two bullet holes and one bullet hole added through the forehead. Printed cards 199a Ruptured RUPERT & 199b Gassy GUS replaced cards 199a Baby ABIE & 199b Missing LINC within the set, which both went through a layout change from a black number to a white number, a blue GPK header to a red GPK header and a blue nameplate to a yellow nameplate, the same layout as the original proof. The proof with red GPK header contains a red ® trademark symbol, characteristic of OS3 headers only. This particular piece was finally published in 2010 for the Flashback Series 1 set as LOST GPK cards 66a Baby ABIE & 66b LINCOLN Park , as 2013 Chrome OS1 cards L2a Baby ABIE and L2b Missing LINC, and again in 2016 within the Classic Patriot Stickers for cards 7 of 9.

The OS5 artwork for cards 205a Hot ROD & 205b BUD Buggy is an image based directly off of artist Ed Roth's Hot-Rod character from the 50s and 60s right down to the grotesque, monster-looking mutant. Ed Roth was an artist and custom car builder during the hot-rod movement and created the iconic Rat Fink (R.F.) character. The Dunruss card company released an Odd Rods parody card series in 1969 along with other similar titles thru 1973 including Odder Odd Rods and Silly Cycles. The Topps company later released a card set titled Weird Wheels as a parody of the popular Hot Wheels toy cars in 1980; one card in particular showcases a Rat Fink-like character. Rat = a rodent or (informal) a despicable character and fink; a snitch.

At some point in 1986, during the Garbage Pail Kids reign, Topps released the Snotty Signs Stickers that showcased different sized yellow and black signage that could be stuck to objects. Card number 34 of 44 contained a small sticker that displays the message 'GARBAGE PAIL KIDS LIVE', much like the popular catchphrase 'FRODO LIVES' during the Lord of the Rings book days seen on buttons, meaning 'lives on', 'to live on'.

Several uncut OS5 Garbage Pail Kids Sheets were auctioned off of eBay through the Topps Vault in the Summer of 2006. The image displays the front card artwork and a section of 44 (a or b) cards with variations; sheet production code #4-490-05-03-6.

The image from the GPK Poster set #18 BUSTED! painted by artist John Pound is used for the OS5 through OS8 retail ad posters with an enlarged, straight Garbage Pail Kids banner at the bottom. The original poster contains a much smaller Garbage Pail Kids banner.

The poster image can also be found as card #14 BUSTED! from the GIANT GPK card set with the original curved Garbage Pail Kids header rather than the straight Garbage Pail Kids banner at the bottom. In both the posters and card, along with various award and license card backs, there are several OS1 and OS2 characters found throughout the image.

Possibly coincidental, but there are several Garbage Pail Kids characters with a very R.Crumb feel to them. Artist Robert Crumb's artwork tends to display nostalgic contemporary American folk culture, but oftentimes from a satirical viewpoint. Card example 177a Meltin' MILTON & 177b Lazy LOUIE:

The OS5 reverse card back File Cards artwork was completed by artist Tom Bunk using watercolors. The card type on the backside was written by NPD art directors Mark Newgarden and Art Spiegelman; a very humorous way to revisit some of the earlier characters in the GPK canon.
