RELEASE PERIOD : AUGUST 1986

The three print runs for the 5th Series Garbage Pail Kids (a/k/a OS5 GPK; Original Series) are exactly the same except for their wrappers. The first print run wrapper contains a regular red color header and a 25¢ logo with the -05- wrapper code; the -05- wrapper can also be found with a maroon header color. The second print run wrapper contains a maroon color header without a 25¢ logo and with the -07- wrapper code.  The third print run wrapper also contains a red color header without the 25¢ logo and with the -08- wrapper code.  The other sequentially numbered -06- wrapper code is a fifth print run for the 4th Series Garbage Pail Kids set manufactured in Canada along with the third 5th Series print run. These additional print runs were caused by the growing popularity of the card craze during its peak production time, further prompted by the free exposure and advertising due to the ongoing court procedures between Topps and OAA during the course of the lawsuit.

1.
The Last Garbage Pail Kids Series to have the iconic character ADAM Bomb on the wrapper and packaging for the Original Series run.

2. The first set to have a GPK Header and Name Bar aligned to the left hand side to be centered with the character. Cards 185a FRAN Furter and 185b Hot DOUG.

3. The Completed Puzzle for the 5th Series is sequential with the 4th Series set which contained puzzle 'C'. The puzzles continue to contain 21 pieces and the set is back to having two puzzles like the 3rd series for card characters 168a Handy RANDY and 168b JORDAN Nuts for puzzle 'D' and 169a DEE Faced and 169b TERRI Cloth for puzzle 'E' found sequentially next to each other wihin the set and both containing variation card backs.

4. This series has the Light Blue Nameplate ... no light pink nameplate within the set.

5. The second series to contain cards with The GPK Acronym found within the artwork. The Garbage Pail Kids acronym found on the super-hero suit of cards 172a NAT Nerd and 172b CLARK Can't. The comic-book storage box chosen for 'COMICS' indexed for books 'M-N' was chosen for a reason, and non-coincidental. John Pound did not select 'M-N' for comic-book archiving reasons, but for the GPK editor in charge, Mark Newgarden, whom often signed, and to this day, often signs his correspondence with the initials 'MN'.

6. The second set to have a card showcasing Sticker Images From Previous Releases. Cards 189a BRENDA Blender and 189b Juicy LUCY contain a several character images from previous sets: The green 3rd Series wrapper portraying the 1st Series character 8a ADAM Bomb and 8b Blasted BILLY, a sticker of itself for cards 189a Brenda Blender and 189b Juicy LUCY, the 3rd Series image 115a Warmin' NORMAN and 115b Well Done SHELDON, and 3rd Series cards 90a Stoned SEAN and 90b Thick VIC -- all character images painted by Tom Bunk. The image concept comes from an unpublished Gross Bears Buttons piece, pictured below, in which the entire series was completed by Tom Bunk in 1985 prior to the GPK release (further information can be found in the Parody Pages within the G.P.K.Land section).

7. The first set with an Upside Down nameplate to go along with the optical joke. Cards 184a Upside Down DONALD and 184b HUGH Turn. The comic theme, as seen further above, continues to becomes popular with Garbage Pail Kids comic card backs starting with the 6th Series GPK set.

8. The set contains the first card Artwork with an artist Signature, both by artist John Pound. The Topps Co. has never listed any artwork credit to the artists that contributed to the Original Series sets; not until 1991 for the Trash Can Trolls set records an overall credit on the checklist card. Cards 182a Tagged TAD and 182b Sprayed WADE has 'J.P. 1986' spraypainted across the entire character which is John Pound's initials and cards 192a Delicate TESS and 192b Hamburger PATTIE have 'MEAT 35¢/POUND' written on the sign; the double meaning is the price of meat per pound and for the artist John Pound who often autographs his first name in cursive and then prints "POUND" afterwards. Both can be seen within the Artwork Gallery section above.

9. The first series to contain a Product Parody similar to the Topps Wacky Packages stickers ... Cards 200a Fluoride FLOYD and 200b Dental DANIEL have the character holding a tube of toothpaste called 'Crust', like the 1st series Wacky Package sticker 'CRUST'.

10. Cards 200a and 200b can also be found with an inverted and updside-down Die-Cut for both cards; they seem to be pretty rare as far as die-cut error variations go. Thanks GPK Store and More (gpkstoreandmore.com) for the scans!

11. Though the picture for cards 196a Dangling DOLLY and 196b Surreal NEAL has been cropped to card format, the tan object to the left can be seen as Another GPK Face in the final artwork (as seen within the Artwork Gallery section above).

12. The first series to have Variation Backs that Are Puzzle Pieces.

1
. The 5th Series File Cards character artwork on the back of the cards was completed by Tom Bunk. The print on the backside was written by Mark Newgarden and Art Spiegelman; a very humorous way to revisit some of the earlier characters in the GPK canon.

2. Artist Tom Bunk had Different Renditions For several of his 5th Series Color Rough artwork. The image for cards 167a MICK Dagger and 167b Slayed SLADE was
originally a turban and loincloth-wearing sword-swallower; Topps editor Mark Newgarden made a few comments for the first concept, to have the character be a circus performer with a top hat outside with a ground (no stage spot-light). The second concept was changed to a night sky and later to all yellow for the final artwork; Newgarden made several more notes, to add a wagon in the background, and to have the background be 'shadow of color' rather than detailed.

3. Tom Bunk's Original Artwork for cards 174a FRED thread and 174b Repaired REX had the character standing up, sewing his leg together; a missing eye, blonde hair and a bone and guts sticking out of the character. The final artwork had the characters sitting down, doll-style, with both eyes, brown hair and the innards replaced with cotton stuffing.
"Topps wanted the nasty guts to be replaced with nice cottonballs." -- Tom Bunk. In June of 2015, Topps released their 30th Anniversary set that contained a Lost Alternate Art subset that included this Tom Bunk artwork piece with the same naming as the OS printed card. An error can be found on card 174b Reparied Rex near the card number called the ghost '10' or upside-down 'OF'; located within wrapper pack 0-490-21-05-6.

4. The image for poster #18 BUSTED! (12x17) from the Garbage Pail Kids Poster set, is used for the U.S. 5th Series, 6th Series, 7th Series and 8th series Retail Ad Posters with an enlarged, straight GPK banner; pictured above in the Product Overview section. A smaller version of the new GPK banner is located on the poster image (below). The image can also be found as card #14 BUSTED! (5x7) from the Giant GPK card set with the original curved GPK header rather than the straight GPK banner.

In both the posters and card, minus the various Award and License card backs, there are several 1st Series and 2nd Series GPK Characters portrayed within the image; all John Pound artwork. As can be discerned from left to right from the school sign to the ground: (OS2) 45a Leaky Lindsay and 45b Messy TESSIE, (OS1) 27a Brainy JANIE and 27b JENNY Genius, (OS2) 49a Double Heather, 49b Schizo FRAN / FRAN FRAN, (1st) 30a New Wave DAVE and 30b Graffiti PETEY, 8a ADAM Bomb and 8b Blasted BILLY, (OS2) 73a Gorgeous GEORGE and 73b Dollar BILL, (OS1) 3a Up CHUCK and 3b Heavin' STEVEN, (OS2) 83a Ugh LEE and 83b Sumo SID, 77a Ghastley ASHLEY and 77b Acne AMY, 54a Fryin' RYAN and 54b Charred CHAD, 79a Sewer SUE and 79b MICHELLE Muck, 74a MARK Bark and 74b Kennel KENNY, 57a TOMMY Gun and 57b Dead FRED, 67a Phony LISA and 67b MONA Loser, 43a Smelly KELLY and 43b DOUG Plug, 44a SY CLOPS and 44b One-Eyed JACK, 66a MATT Ratt and 66b RACHEL Rodent, 62a Greaser GREG and 62b CHRIS Hiss, (OS1) 5a Dead TED and 5b JAY Decay, (OS2) 65a Shrunken ED and 65b Cheeky CHARLES, 42a PATTY Putty and 42b Muggin' MEGAN, (OS1) 18a Cranky FRANKIE and 18b Bad BRAD, (OS2) 75a Off-The-Wall PAUL and 75b ZACH Plaque, 46a Rappin' RON and 46b RAY Gun, (OS1) 4a Fryin' BRIAN and 4b Electric BILL, 39a Buggy BETTY and 39b Green JEAN, 41a Mean GENE and 41b Joltin' JOE, and 40a Unstitched MITCH and 40b Damaged DON.

5. Per John Pound's website; the worms for cards 173a Menaced DENNIS and 173b Wormy SHERMY had a minor Color Variation; a color rough was created picturing the worms painted in a red color, rather than the final green color. The pencil artwork by Pound for cards 204a JULES Drools and 204b KIT Spit and the suggested name of Droolin' JULIAN that was not used by Topps.
Another color variation and wardrobe change happens with for cards 200a Flouride FLOYD and 200b Dental DANIEL, the character has blonde hair instead of brown and is wearing a white muscle-shirt instead of a pajama top. Please visit: www.poundart.com

6. Duri
ng the Garbage Pail Kids card reproduction a Blue-Lines process is used (a.k.a. whiteprint) within the correction process of the set. It is a contact printing process which accurately reproduces the original in size of artwork. Below are two blue-line proof card examples as auctioned off on eBay through the Topps Vault in 2006. A blue-line print is not permanent and will fade if exposed to light for weeks or months. Cards 179a MOE Skeeto and 183a Diaper DAN.

7. During the Garbage Pail Kids card production process a black Mask Film is used which alters the transparency of artwork. Below are two film transparency card examples as auctioned off on eBay through the Topps Vault in the Fall of 2006. Cards 171a WILLIE Wipe-Out and 171b SPENCER Dispenser and cards 193a Shattered SHELBY and 193b Cracked CRAIG.

8. Uncut 5th Series Garbage Pail Kids Sheets were auctioned off of eBay, through the Topps Vault in the Summer of 2006. Pictured is the front image for the 5th Series GPK set uncut sheet which shows a section of 44 cards with variations. Sheet production code # 4-490-05-03-6.

9.
Some time in 1986, during the Garbage Pail Kids reign, Topps released the Snotty Signs Stickers that showcased different sized yellow and black 'snotty signs' that could be stuck to objects. Card number 34 of 44 contained a small sticker that displays the message GARBAGE PAIL KIDS LIVE, much like the popular catchphrase 'Frodo Lives' during the Lord of the Rings days.

10.
The Topps 5th Series cards 205a Hot ROD and 205b BUD Buggy are an image based directly off of Ed Roth's Hot-Rod Artwork during the 50s and 60s, down to the grotesque, monster-looking Kid. Ed Roth was an artist and customer car builder during the hot-rod movement within this period and created the iconic Rat Fink character (R.F.). The Dunruss card company released an Odd Rods parody card series in 1969 along with other similar titles thru 1973 including Odder Odd Rods and Silly Cycles. The Topps company later released a card set titled Weird Wheels as a parody of the popular Hot Wheels cars in 1980; one card in particular showcases a Rat Fink-like character; rat (double meaning) = a rodent or informal, a despicable character and fink = a rat or snitch.

11
. This previously John Pound Unpublished GPK was painted in 1986 and was intended for the 5th Series set. The Garbage Pail Kids artwork was finally published in 2010 for the GPK Flashback set as Lost GPK cards 67a Global WARREN and 67b AL Pocalypse.

12. A second Unpublished GPK Pound piece created for the OS5 set and also painted in 1986. The Garbage Pail Kids final artwork was finaly published in 2011 for the GPK Flashback 3 set as a Lost GPK for cards 69a Shadowy SHELIA and 69b Vaporized VAL.

13
. This John Pound Unpublished GPK was painted in 1986 and was intended for the 5th Series set, but the piece was removed late in the developemental stage of the set. A slick proof went up for sale on eBay through the Topps Vault during April of 2005. The piece was originally intended for the 3rd Series set whose character had one bullet hole through the hat and holding a 'PlayBill' which was changed to 'SlayBill' for the 5th Series card with the hat now having two bullet holes and one bullet hole added through the forehead (see the 3rd Series GPK History section for additional and orginal images).

Printed cards 199a Ruptured RUPERT and 199b Gassy GUS replaced cards 199a Baby ABIE and 199b Missing LINC within the set in which both went through a layout change from a black number to a white number, a blue GPK header to a red GPK header and a blue name bar to a yellow name bar. It is interesting to note that the red GPK header contains a red ® symbol, a blue or red symbol is a characteristic to the OS3 headers only. This particular GPK artwork was finally published in 2010 for the GPK Flashback set as LOST GPK cards 66a Baby ABIE and 66b LINCOLN Park and again in 2016 within the Classic Patriot Stickers subset (located exclusively in Jumbo packs) as cards 7a of 9 and 7b of 9. The final artwork is located within the Artwork Gallery section.
