RELEASE PERIOD : NOVEMBER 1986

The print runs of the 6th Series Garbage Pail Kids (a/k/a OS6 GPK; Original Series) are exactly the same except for their wrappers. There are no card variations for this set and the first GPK set with 44 different character images. The first print run wrapper has the 25¢ logo with a yellow star within the yellow, circle background; the 25¢ logo is changed to a white star, so it would stand out, at some point during the print run and contains the -09- wrapper code. The second print run, possibly intended for hobby stores, has a wrapper without the 25¢ logo and contains the -10- wrapper code.

1. The only GPK series to have a 25¢ CHEAP Color Change.  In the first print run the 25¢ CHEAP is yellow as part of the background and then changed to a white 25¢ CHEAP logo to have the price stand out. After 5 previous wrappers with a yellow explosion background, this is the first of three with a new yellow, circle shaped backdrop.

2. The Completed Puzzle for the 6th Series is sequential with the 5th Series set which contained puzzles 'D' and 'E'. The puzzles continue to contain 21 pieces and the set is back to having one puzzle like the 4th Series for card characters 250a Newly-Dead ED and 250b Dyna MIKE for puzzle 'F'.

3. The second series with a Light Pink Nameplate. the set contains dark blue, dark pink, yellow, red and light pink nameplates ... no light blue nameplate in this set.

4. The series has two cards with the Same First Name; cards 208b Teed-Off TOM and 218a TOM Thumb.

5. The only series with An Object as a Nameplate; cards 210a Intense PAYNE and 210b First ADA with a Band-Aid as the unprecedented nameplate. The Band-Aid is part of the final artwork and, as seen on Pound's pencil art, was part of the original concept as well; the only think removed was the creased forehead wrinkle.

6. The first series to Not depict ADAM Bomb On the Wrapper or box, but instead, a different 1st Series Kid; the character for cards 14a Potty SCOTTY and 14b JASON Basin (seen above within Product Overview).

7. The only series to have a card with the character Name on the nameplate in bold, but the font Smaller Than the Word for card 237a Totaled TODD.

8. The first series to have a card showcasing Character Names From Previous Releases; cards 246a JOHN John and 246b Flushing FLOYD that pay tribute to two older GPK characters whose names are written on the bathroom wall. The 3rd Series character 220b Jelly KELLY with a hand print above her name and the 1st Series character 14a Potty SCOTTY with the words 'Wuz Here' below his name (who coincidentally finds himself on the packaging for this release).

9. The only veritical or horizontal card with the PEEL HERE Arrow in a different corner of the sticker; cards 241a Old GLORIA and 241b JOSE Can You See. Placed in the lower right hand corner as not to interfere with the artwork. The PEEL HERE arrow has been switched from facing the left to facing the right.

10. The third set to have a card showcasing Sticker Images From Previous Releases; card images for 248a HECTOR Collector and 248b G.P. KAY pay tribute to several older GPK card images whose stickers are stuck to the character's body. The following card images listed top to bottom: OS2 45a Leaky LINDSAY and 45b Messy TESSIE; unknown character; OS1 28a Oozy SUZY and 28b Meltin' MELISSA; OS2 51a RUSSELL Muscle and 51b BRETT Sweat; OS2 66a MATT Ratt and 66b RACHEL Rodent; OS3 103a Wriggley RENE and 103b Curly CARLA(?); OS2 77a Ghastly ASHLEY and 77b Acne AMY; OS1 40a Unstitched MITCH and 40b Damaged DON and OS1 19a Corroded CARL and 19b Crater CHRIS.

11. The name John Pound had suggested on the pencil artwork for cards 240a Radar RAY and 240b EVE Droppin' but Topps did not use was ERIC Canal.

12.
The only series with a Wrapper that does not have the Bar Code in a white box.

13. The first GPK series with No Variations.

of the GPK Names

1.
The Original final Artwork Piece for cards 248a HECTOR Collector and 248b G.P. KAY was completed by John Pound. The character was completed before the 6th Series release and intended for the 5th Series release, but was later re-painted by newcomer artist James Warhola. Unlike the rendition completed by Warhola (with nine GPK sticker images) there are no distinguishable GPK images from the previous sets that can be found on Pound's artwork (with sixteen GPK stickers). In June of 2015, Topps released their 30th Anniversary set that contained a Lost Alternate Art subset that included this John Pound artwork piece with the same naming as the OS printed card.

2. In June of 2015, Topps released their 30th Anniversary set that contained a Lost Alternate Art subset that included this John Pound artwork piece with almost the same naming as the OS printed card; 214a Off-Color CLARA, and anagram of CARLA. Although still a paint-by-number theme, the two pieces are very different aesthetically.

3. This 6th Series Wrapper Concept Artwork was created for the release by Tom Bunk who rendered all the wrapper artwork for the sixteen original GPK sets. This wrapper concept mock-up is a line-drawing of John Pound's 1st Series character featured on cards 14a Potty SCOTTY and 14b JASON Basin. Besides the new wrapper mascot, the other big change is the ALL NEW series announcement box replacing the jagged half-circle. The Topps logo will be moved and a large yellow, circle-shaped backdrop added for the final wrapper image.

4. The image for poster #18 BUSTED! (12x17) from the Garbage Pail Kids Poster set, is used for the U.S. 5th Series, 6th Series, 7th Series and 8th series Retail Ad Posters with an enlarged, straight GPK banner; pictured above in the Product Overview section. A smaller version of the new GPK banner is located on the poster image (below). The image can also be found as card #14 BUSTED! (5x7) from the Giant GPK card set with the original curved GPK header rather than the straight GPK banner. The 'NEW' yellow color of the 5th Series retail poster has been changed to pink for the 6th Series retail poster.

In both the posters and card, minus the various Award and License card backs, there are several 1st Series and 2nd Series GPK Characters portrayed within the image; all John Pound artwork. As can be discerned from left to right from the school sign to the ground: (OS2) 45a Leaky Lindsay and 45b Messy TESSIE, (OS1) 27a Brainy JANIE and 27b JENNY Genius, (OS2) 49a Double Heather, 49b Schizo FRAN / FRAN FRAN, (1st) 30a New Wave DAVE and 30b Graffiti PETEY, 8a ADAM Bomb and 8b Blasted BILLY, (OS2) 73a Gorgeous GEORGE and 73b Dollar BILL, (OS1) 3a Up CHUCK and 3b Heavin' STEVEN, (OS2) 83a Ugh LEE and 83b Sumo SID, 77a Ghastley ASHLEY and 77b Acne AMY, 54a Fryin' RYAN and 54b Charred CHAD, 79a Sewer SUE and 79b MICHELLE Muck, 74a MARK Bark and 74b Kennel KENNY, 57a TOMMY Gun and 57b Dead FRED, 67a Phony LISA and 67b MONA Loser, 43a Smelly KELLY and 43b DOUG Plug, 44a SY CLOPS and 44b One-Eyed JACK, 66a MATT Ratt and 66b RACHEL Rodent, 62a Greaser GREG and 62b CHRIS Hiss, (OS1) 5a Dead TED and 5b JAY Decay, (OS2) 65a Shrunken ED and 65b Cheeky CHARLES, 42a PATTY Putty and 42b Muggin' MEGAN, (OS1) 18a Cranky FRANKIE and 18b Bad BRAD, (OS2) 75a Off-The-Wall PAUL and 75b ZACH Plaque, 46a Rappin' RON and 46b RAY Gun, (OS1) 4a Fryin' BRIAN and 4b Electric BILL, 39a Buggy BETTY and 39b Green JEAN, 41a Mean GENE and 41b Joltin' JOE, and 40a Unstitched MITCH and 40b Damaged DON.

5
. Pictured below is an Unpublished Painting finished by John Pound titled PIZZA FACE , a concept considered for the 2nd Series set but, never released for the 6th Series GPK set. The image was the fifth painting (6-5 R) completed by Pound for the 6th Series set but was used within the GPK Poster set as poster #7 Eat My Face!, Garbage Pail Kids instead. The piece was later used as the 16th Series (once again) unpublished cards 639a GUY Pie and 639b Pepperoni Toni to replace a rejected piece of artwork. The character finally ended up being published as a card in 2003 for the All-New Series 1 (ANS1) cards 9a Cheesy CHARLIE and 9b Pizza Face CHASE; notice the four fingers instead of three fingers of later sets. Per Pound's pencil artwork the pizza-face was supposed to be placed 'in (a) pizza pan' and was initially drawn that way.

6. During the Garbage Pail Kids card reproduction a Blue-Lines process is used (a.k.a. whiteprint) within the correction process of the set. It is a contact printing process which accurately reproduces the original in size of artwork. Below is one blue-line proof card example as auctioned off on eBay through the Topps Vault in 2006; card 241b JOSE Can You See. A blue-line print is not permanent and will fade if exposed to light for weeks or months.

7. The artwork for cards
233a WES Mess and 233b Trash-Can KEN, painted by James Warhola, was based off of the Vertumnus piece created by Giuseppe Arcimboldo in 1590. Per Roman mythology, Vertumnus is the God of seasons, gardens, plant growth, fruit trees, etc. The Vertumnus painting itself was based on the Holy Roman Emperor (1576 - 1612) Rudolf II whom greatly appreciated the piece.

8. Uncut 6th Series Garbage Pail Kids Sheets were auctioned off of eBay through the Topps Vault in the Summer of 2006. Pictured is the front and back image for the 6th Series GPK set uncut sheet which shows a section of 44 cards with no variations.
Sheet production code # 4-490-05-04-6.

9
. The 6th Series Comic Artwork on the back of the cards was completed By artist Jay Lynch. The comics were a Topps spoof on themselves poking fun at their popular Bazooka Joe comics that came wrapped in the Bazooka gum product. Jay Lynch finished both the art roughs and the final artwork for the comic backs. The print on the card backs were written by Mark Newgarden and Art Spiegelman.

10. Large GPK Flowcharts were created for the sets after the 4th Series which showed Mark Newgarden, the GPK editor how the work of the new set was going. It displayeed what artist was working on which concept piece and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Often, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The 6th series contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces (by Arthur Shorin) within the set, were saved for a later series or never saw the light of day: kid as flag (6th), kid as welcome mat (6th), matchbook kid (12th), in water cooloer (6th), kangaroo (unpublished), cheerleader coming apart, squeezed face (8th), pumping self with bike-pump (8th), blowing bubblegum (9th), pilgrim in stocking, MadMax, trashcan belly (6th), exploding head (6th), ventriloquist hand (6th), wrecked car (6th), skeleton flasher, butcher block (6th), Mr. Dirt (Mr. Clean parody), beetle (unpublished).
