RELEASE PERIOD : FEBRUARY 1987

Even though the 7th Series Garbage Pail Kids (a/k/a OS7 GPK; Original Series) has only two print runs, it contains one of the most interesting changes of any series; The first print run has both of cards 260b Blasted BILLY II and 261b BOBBY Booger with their original blue GPK headers, and 289b ALEXANDER The Grate with a black, top centered, card number. However, the second print run has cards 260b and 261b with a purple GPK header, and 289b with a white, top corner, card number. The blue GPK headers have been reported to be found in both print runs, whereas the purple GPK headers were most likely an ink error during printing. By the 7th Series release Topps had settled its court case with OAA promising that future GPK would look less like the CPK. It was also ruled that any finished artwork could still be released in future sets, hence, the 8th Series and 9th Series sets still have the CPK features.

1
. The second set since the 1st Series to have a Box And Wrapper that has a Garbage Pail Kid from within its own series (the rest of the sets, 8th Series through 15th Series, will also follow this pattern).

2. The first set to have a number positioned in the top center of the card for 289b ALEXANDER The Grate for the first print run (black, top center) and change the Number Position And Color for the second print run (white, top corner).

3. The Wrapper was made in 1986 and the Cards have a 1987 trademark date; with the card production released so early in the new year the packaging was already developed at the end of the previous year.

4. The Completed Puzzle for the 7th Series is sequential with the 6th Series set which contained puzzle 'F'. The puzzles continue to contain 21 pieces and the set is back to having one puzzle like the 4th and 6th Series for card characters 251a Barfin' BARBARA and 251b VALERIE Vomit for puzzle 'G'.

5. The only set to change a GPK Header Color within its two print runs for cards 260b Blasted BILLY II with a blue header changed to 260b with a purple header. The blue header can be found in both print runs while the purple header can only be located in the second print run.

Also, for cards 261b BOBBY Booger with a blue header changed to 261b with a purple header.

6. The first series Without a Light Pink or Light Blue name bar.

7. The 261a Gooey HUEY card has been found with an Upside-Down Die-Cut; it is unknown which print run the card can be found in.

8. The only set to have a Re-Occuring GPK Character from the 1st Series cards 8a ADAM Bomb and 8b Blasted BILLY to the 7th Series cards 260a ADAM Boom and 8b Blasted BILLY II. The ADAM Bomb character can also be found in cards 1a JOEL Troll and 1b Fall-Out PAUL of the Trash Can Trolls parody set (see the Parody Pages section wihin this website).

9. The first series to have Names Written In White that are not on a dark blue name bar; card example 252a Milky WAYNE and 252b Dairy CARI.

10. The third set to contain cards with The GPK Acronym found within the artwork. The GPK acronym found on the blue baseball cap of cards 257a Cut-Up CARMEN and 257b Dotted LIONEL.

1. The character used for the wrapper was first created by John Pound for cards 255a On The MARK and 255b Bull's IRA within the set. Pictured below is the pencil artwork produced prior to the color rough and final artwork. Tom Bunk, who rendered the wax wrapper artwork for all of the original series sets, used Pound's artwork to create the finished product for the packaging department.

2. This Wrapper Mock-Up artwork was completed prior to the 7th Series release and rendered by artist Tom Bunk. The GPK banner and "STICKERS'
plate were changed to the color, the arrow was removed from character's head and a straight GPK logo was considered due to the pending lawsuit -- eventually seen for the first time on the 9th Series cartoon card backs. This could have been the first bi-colored wrapper instead of an all solid color -- not used for a Topps release until the blue and green colors of the 1991 Trash Can Trolls release. This marks the last time ALL NEW is used for the series announcement until the ALL NEW series of the ANS1 set of 2003.

3.
This unused 7th Series Wrapper mock-up sketch was also drawn for the release by Tom Bunk as an additional sample for the packaging artwork. The image was created by Bunk by directly using John Pound's pencil art (pictured to the right); Tom had rendered the artwork for all of the GPK wax wrapper packs up to this point. The character for cards 251a Barfin' BARBARA and 251b VALERIE Vomit ended up not being chosen for the packaging design but instead was picked as the puzzle character. The yellow background circle first seen on the 6th Series wrapper was crossed out of this unused artwork but shows up within the final wrapper artwork.

4. GPK Case-study: the eyebrows of the lowbrow character 251a Barfin' BARBARA and 251b VALERIE Vomit; ad nauseum. Collecter 'Mad MIKE' Boyajian noticed in 2016 that the eyebrows of John Pound's original concept (pictured above), most likely drawn in late 1986, did not match the card artwork. Topps apparently raised their eyebrows and requested that Pound revise the artwork in question; John did confirm that his b/w photocopy of the original final artwork contains the thin eyebrows. Pound's pencil art was sent to Tom Bunk to render for packaging artwork (pictured above) where both eyebrows are thin. The card artwork contains the updated thick eyebrows, along with the 7th Series 'puzzle preview' card and puzzle piece. The final artwork sold on eBay (early 2000) is missing part of the eyebrow -- this image can be seen printed on the backside of the 2011 Flashback 2 cards 78a and 78b for the 'Where Are They Now?' subset. The original series card image was most likely used for the 2011 Flashback 3 cards 31a and 31b which have the full, unplucked, dark eyebrows back. Mike superimposed the original concept with the final arwork to create what the original final arwork may have looked like and what the card character could have looked like -- more of a surprised expression rather than a severe, Groucho Marx look.

John Pound: "I think Topps sent it back for a retouch on the eyebrows, perhaps they were too tilted. The printed version [...] looks familiar, like how I would have painted the change. The final art [...] also looks vaguely familiar, although not as good to look at. I'm guessing [...] I changed the eyebrows [...] where I fattened up the forms of the brows, to look like yarn [CPK hair -- Ed.), but only colored the top edge. That looked a bit off or muddy, so I put 2 small pieces of tape (or sticky airbrush frisket film) over the brows, and painted the full-on dark brows like yarn hair which looked clearer and better. The darker version may have either fallen off, as the stickiness weakened, or someone [...] peeled it up and lost it."

5
. The Topps GPK Lawsuit with OAA (Original Appalachian Artworks) was settled at the same time that the 7th Series installment of GPK was released to the public. Though future sets would not resemble the Cabbage Patch Kids look, it was ruled that any partially or fully completed material could still be released at a later date, hence the 8th Series and 9th Series sets. The new GPK look, with the non-cloth doll appearance, began during the 10th Series set.

6. Per an acetate test card sold via eBay, card 260a was initally called and titled 'ADAM BOMB II' during the testing production period but switched to the name ADAM Boom prior to the printing phase. This would have matched the nomenclature of card 260b Blasted BILLY II; both the original character and part 2 were painted by artist John Pound.

7. The image for poster #18 BUSTED! (12x17) from the Garbage Pail Kids Poster set, is used for the U.S. 5th Series, 6th Series, 7th Series and 8th Series Retail Ad Posters with an enlarged, straight GPK banner; pictured above in the Product Overview section. A smaller version of the new GPK banner is located on the poster image (below). The image can also be found as card #14 BUSTED! (5x7) from the Giant GPK card set with the original curved GPK header rather than the straight GPK banner. The 'NEW' pink color of the 6th Series retail poster has stayed the same for the 7th Series retail poster; the 5th Series retail poster is yellow.

In both the posters and card, minus the various Award and License card backs, there are several 1st Series and 2nd Series GPK Characters portrayed within the image; all John Pound artwork. As can be discerned from left to right from the school sign to the ground: (OS2) 45a Leaky Lindsay and 45b Messy TESSIE, (OS1) 27a Brainy JANIE and 27b JENNY Genius, (OS2) 49a Double Heather, 49b Schizo FRAN / FRAN FRAN, (1st) 30a New Wave DAVE and 30b Graffiti PETEY, 8a ADAM Bomb and 8b Blasted BILLY, (OS2) 73a Gorgeous GEORGE and 73b Dollar BILL, (OS1) 3a Up CHUCK and 3b Heavin' STEVEN, (OS2) 83a Ugh LEE and 83b Sumo SID, 77a Ghastley ASHLEY and 77b Acne AMY, 54a Fryin' RYAN and 54b Charred CHAD, 79a Sewer SUE and 79b MICHELLE Muck, 74a MARK Bark and 74b Kennel KENNY, 57a TOMMY Gun and 57b Dead FRED, 67a Phony LISA and 67b MONA Loser, 43a Smelly KELLY and 43b DOUG Plug, 44a SY CLOPS and 44b One-Eyed JACK, 66a MATT Ratt and 66b RACHEL Rodent, 62a Greaser GREG and 62b CHRIS Hiss, (OS1) 5a Dead TED and 5b JAY Decay, (OS2) 65a Shrunken ED and 65b Cheeky CHARLES, 42a PATTY Putty and 42b Muggin' MEGAN, (OS1) 18a Cranky FRANKIE and 18b Bad BRAD, (OS2) 75a Off-The-Wall PAUL and 75b ZACH Plaque, 46a Rappin' RON and 46b RAY Gun, (OS1) 4a Fryin' BRIAN and 4b Electric BILL, 39a Buggy BETTY and 39b Green JEAN, 41a Mean GENE and 41b Joltin' JOE, and 40a Unstitched MITCH and 40b Damaged DON.

8. The following Tom Bunk Unpublished GPK concept was completed in 1987 as an idea sketch intended for the 7th Series release. The artwork or a similar concept was
later painted by artist James Warhola to become cards 291a HOMER Runt and 291b Screwball LEW. The baseball head remains intact for both pieces, however, the head is part of the GPKid for the published piece with a fleshed out baseball field and players. The 'J' on the hat most likley stands for 'James' for the artist.

9. Per John Pound's meticulous GPK Notes and references the tight pencil concept for cards 254a CHRIS Mess and 254b SANDY Clod was created during the 6th Series set and cards 286a HALEY Comet and 286b JUNE Moon was created during the 4th Series set. The pencil artwork for cards 266a ROY L. Flush and 266b Shuffled SHERMAN suggested that the nameplate be across the center of the card and the logo be a bit smaller and placed at the top and at the bottom of the picture to match a real playing card; saldy, this was not realized and the 'K' and apple were removed from the concept.

10. The 7th Series card backs contain File Cards that were written by Mark Newgarden and Art Spiegelman for the Garbage Pail Kids set while the rendered artwork on the back of the cards was completed by artist Tom Bunk. The card back sample below contains the 1st Series characters from cards 1a Nasty NICK and 1b Evil EDDIE.

11. Garbage Pail Kids Flowcharts were created for the sets after the 4th Series which showed Mark Newgarden, the GPK editor how the work of the new set was going. It displayed what artist was working on which concept piece and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Often, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The 7th Series contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces within the set, were saved for a later series, or never saw the light of day: ghost, staple gun (7th - stapler), butcher block, kangaroo (unpublished), pilgrim in stocking, iron maiden, porcupine (TCT; GPK FB), scalped (9th), cow kid branded (unpublished), Merlin, toes as GPK heads (TCT), dog catcher, tied to anchor - sharks (TCT), Mickey Mouse-type (16th), pumping self with bike pump (8th), bowling ball (8th), justice with scale, aligator wrestler (15th), tar and feathered, fondue, atlas (GPK FB), knit (8th), embryo, wooden Indian on fire, Xmas ornaments.
