RELEASE PERIOD : APRIL 1987

The two print runs of the 8th Series Garbage Pail Kids (a/k/a OS8 GPK; Original Series) are the same except for their wrappers. The first print run wrapper has a 25¢ logo and the second print run wrapper is without the 25¢ logo.  After the court case with Original Appalachian Artworks (OAA), even though it was ruled that GPK must look less like the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, any completed work could still be produced, thus the 8th and 9th Series GPK sets were still manufactured and released with the original GPK look and CPK features. The CBS Garbage Pail Kids Saturday morning cartoon was created during this time and set for a Fall release but shelved at the last minute due to public outcry and protests (see the GPK History section for more information on the Saturday morning cartoon).

1.
The Wrapper Mock-Up artwork was completed prior to the 8th Series release and rendered by artist Tom Bunk. The green GPK banner was changed to red and b
oth the banner and sticker plate were given a yellow background. This marks the first set to drop the ALL NEW from the series annoucement, except for the 9th Series which showcases it within the non-25 cent logo, not to be picked up again until the ALL NEW series in 2003. This is the third and final wrapper the yellow background circle will be used.

2. This Tom Bunk Unpublished Piece was finished in 1987 and was intended for the 8th Series Garbage Pail Kids set. The punk Kid middle finger artwork was completed but was never published with the spiked hair being changed drastically between the concept and color rough pieces.

3. Writers Jay Lynch and Art Spiegelman Completed the gags for the Comic Backs artwork. Artist Jay Lynch also worked on the Bazooka Joe-like comic backs by working on the pencil roughs while Howard Cruse completed the final artwork. Some comics were possible left-over pieces from the 6th Series comic backs.

4. The GPK concept for cards 1a Nasty NICK and 1b Evil EDDIE, created by Mark Newgarden, displayed dracula standing up and having bit into a Barbie-esque doll (color concept by John Pound pictured below). The Original 'Dracula Kid' Concept artwork, by John Pound, showed dracula coming out of his coffin, which contains a fun 'Jack in the Box' pun, and a nice Translvania backdrop (pictured below; courtesy of 30 Years of Garbage); the overall dark outline gives it a very Wacky Package sticker feel, the Topps franchise from which GPK were born. The discarded Vanitas-like candle and skull in the concept, painted by John Pound, can be found in this set on cards 328A Glowing AMBER and 328B Bright DWIGHT; where the candle/fire represent life/time and the skull represents death.

5. Artist Tom Bunk had Different renditions For several of his 8th series Color Roughs. Below are examples of these various color versions that you can compare to the actual final artwork for cards 293A Explorin' NORMAN and 293B Drillin' DYLAN and cards 309A Heartless HAL and 309B BOWEN Arrow.

6. The image for poster #18 BUSTED! (12x17) from the Garbage Pail Kids Poster set, is used for the U.S. 5th Series, 6th Series, 7th Series and 8th Series Retail Ad Posters with an enlarged, straight GPK banner; pictured above in the Product Overview section. A smaller version of the new GPK banner is located on the poster image (below). The image can also be found as card #14 BUSTED! (5x7) from the Giant GPK card set with the original curved GPK header rather than the straight GPK banner. The 'NEW' pink color of the 6th Series and 7th Series retail posters has stayed the same for the 8th Series retail poster; but the 8th Series poster has a white box.

In both the posters and card, minus the various Award and License card backs, there are several 1st Series and 2nd Series GPK Characters portrayed within the image; all John Pound artwork. As can be discerned from left to right from the school sign to the ground: (OS2) 45a Leaky Lindsay and 45b Messy TESSIE, (OS1) 27a Brainy JANIE and 27b JENNY Genius, (OS2) 49a Double Heather, 49b Schizo FRAN / FRAN FRAN, (1st) 30a New Wave DAVE and 30b Graffiti PETEY, 8a ADAM Bomb and 8b Blasted BILLY, (OS2) 73a Gorgeous GEORGE and 73b Dollar BILL, (OS1) 3a Up CHUCK and 3b Heavin' STEVEN, (OS2) 83a Ugh LEE and 83b Sumo SID, 77a Ghastley ASHLEY and 77b Acne AMY, 54a Fryin' RYAN and 54b Charred CHAD, 79a Sewer SUE and 79b MICHELLE Muck, 74a MARK Bark and 74b Kennel KENNY, 57a TOMMY Gun and 57b Dead FRED, 67a Phony LISA and 67b MONA Loser, 43a Smelly KELLY and 43b DOUG Plug, 44a SY CLOPS and 44b One-Eyed JACK, 66a MATT Ratt and 66b RACHEL Rodent, 62a Greaser GREG and 62b CHRIS Hiss, (OS1) 5a Dead TED and 5b JAY Decay, (OS2) 65a Shrunken ED and 65b Cheeky CHARLES, 42a PATTY Putty and 42b Muggin' MEGAN, (OS1) 18a Cranky FRANKIE and 18b Bad BRAD, (OS2) 75a Off-The-Wall PAUL and 75b ZACH Plaque, 46a Rappin' RON and 46b RAY Gun, (OS1) 4a Fryin' BRIAN and 4b Electric BILL, 39a Buggy BETTY and 39b Green JEAN, 41a Mean GENE and 41b Joltin' JOE, and 40a Unstitched MITCH and 40b Damaged DON.

. In 1987, after the release of the 8th series GPK, CBS Inc. was ready to premier the Garbage Pail KidsCartoon on Saturday Morning. Cartoon cells were created by Geof Darrow for the main cast of characters, although there were tons of extras; the cartoon cells were later auctioned off on eBay
. The 13 episodes of the Paramount GPK cartoon were released on DVD for the first time in April of 2006; the episodes are broken down into two segments, a Loony Toons-type segment and a Scooby-Doo detective type segment (with the main GPK cast with their normal and hidden-identity characters) along with various breaks such as a GPK Award and 'Would We Lie To You?' sections. The main cartoon cast is comprised of the following characters: 2nd Series 81a Split KIT and 81b Mixed-Up MITCH, 2nd Series 42a PATTY Putty and 42b Muggin' MEGAN, 6th Series 213a OTTO Whack and 213b ELLIOT Mess, 5th Series 169a DEE Faced and 169b TERRI Cloth (with the 6th Series 235a Ugly HANS and 235b JAN Hand hand) and 2nd Series 59a Clogged DUANE and 59b Bye Bye BOBBIE.

(characters with their regular and hidden-identity images)

(additional characters during the various opening sequences)

(cast of faculty characters: Preston Purgation; Sylvia Censor; Squeaky Clean; and Simon Scour)

8. There were also Garbage Pail Kids Cartoon Figurines modeled after the cartoon characters that Galoob Toys intended to release. The figurines contained the main GPK Cartoon cast plus various other charactes used during the opening, et cetera: 2nd Series 63a Spacey STACY and 63b Planet Janet, 4th Series 129a Second Hand ROSE and 129b Trashed TRACY, 5th Series 203a Toothie RUTHIE and 203b Dental FLOSSIE, 2nd Series 79a Sewer SUE and 79b MICHELLE Muck, 4th Series 138a Alien IAN and 138b Outerspace CHASE, 6th Series 233a WES Mess and 233b Trash-Can KEN and 3rd Series 113a ALICE Island and 113b Liberty LIBBY. However, after the cartoon was shelved in part due to the American Family Association's (AFA) efforts against CBS to stop the GPK cartoon by Topps, the toy figures were also shelved and not released. The AFA Letter and the protest against CBS and its sponsers can be located below; supplied by collector Travis Tierno.

9. Flowcharts were created For the later GPK sets which showed the art director how the work of the new set was going. It displayed what artist was working on which concept piece and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Often, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The 8th series contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces within the set, were saved for a later series, or never saw the light of day: Mickey Mouse (16th), elephant nose / sneezing, out of waffle iron (8th), fortune cookie (13th), piñata (TCT), head as cereal bowl - all brain cereal (9th), fireman - flames (9th), garbage out of shower (8th), oil slick, hand puppet (8th), staples, haunted tree, porcupine (TCT), Samurai, justice with scales, split like log with axe, GPK kangaroo shooting mother (unpublished), iron maiden, cigar (8th), bloody nose - drawing in blood, punch bag - long neck (8th), nuclear fart, teeth for eyes (12th - but removed from picture), in dungeon (unpublished).
