— The first set to have the smallest PEEL HERE arrow and the smallest nameplate font size.

— The Trademark for Garbage Pail Kids for goods and services, "candy and chewing gum sold alone and in conjunction with stickers", was filed on August 7, 2003 for the 'first use' in commerce on August 22, 2003 and registered and renewed on November 29, 2003; well after the ANS1 GPK release in August of 2003.



— The first U.S. GPK set to contain Chase Cards in the form of foil cards and wrap-around gum stickers. The first and second production packs contained the silver foil cards while the third production run contained the gold foil cards. The old artwork was edited and digitally colored with airbrush by artist brothers Pat Glover and Sean Glover to match the new GPK style from the old model sheets to include hinged-joints, cracked bodies, oval eyes, etcetera. All foil cards have a red Garbage Pail Kids logo and nameplate.





— The third production run caused the series to have eight reverse card Checklist variations. The gum and small stickers were removed for the last production run resulting in the four checklist cards, for 2a On Fire MARIAH, 11a Jarred JARED, 14a Little Barfin' ANNA and 39b ANDREW Spew, to be changed to gold sticker checklists. The checklists cards for 5b Ridiculous NICHOLAS, 12b Bathroom TYLER, 22b BMX BEN and 35b Booger BRIAN had the word 'BIG' removed from the four checklists.

— The only Garbage Pail Kids set with a light green Nameplate color for cards 21a Boardin' JORDAN & 21b Rad BRAD. This is very similar to the only dark green nameplate for the OS run, for cards 486a Chiseler CHAD & 486b JULIUS Sneezer.



— Sealed foil Wrappers are used instead of the old wax-pack wrappers. A collector is able to read the wrapper code from the outside of the pack. The third production run removed the Nutrition Facts and replaced the area with the message 'Collect All 80 Stickers and 50 Gold Foil Stickers', since gum was no longer included.

— The first set to have Puzzle backs only; no comic or humor backs in this set which saved money on the reboot release. Also, the first set to include a nameplate on the puzzle image, unlike the unnamed puzzles of the OS1 through OS16 sets.

— A small September 26, 2003 product review write-up from Entertainment Weekly announced the (retail) release of the returning Garbage Pail Kids brand within its pop-culture pages.



— The twelth Garbage Pail Kids set to contain cards with the GPK Acronym (or initialism) found within the artwork. The acronym found on the establishmnt sign of cards 15a BILL Board & 15b Blinkin' BLAKE and on the fence right above the stick figure and 'Aaron' forename of cards 31a Fartin' MARTIN & 31b Revvin' EVAN. 'BILL Board' is a slight misnomer, considering this is a smaller store sign, and not a large advertisement board.

— Within the same year that ANS1 GPK was published the band The Nipples released their Filthy Lyrics, Happy Kids CD with new cover artwork by John Pound in the original GPK character art style. The background of students in the picture includes an ADAM Bomb character with his head blown open (without the signature mushroom cloud) and the second song on the playlist is titled 'Attack of the Garbage Pail Kids'.



— Artist Tom Bunk's surname, BUNK, can be seen on the grafittied wall on cards 39a COLIN 911 & 39b ANDREW Spew, along with other name callouts to other friends and family members.

— There are eleven new pieces of Artwork within the ANS set, replacing paintings pulled from the original OS16 set, and one rejected and unplished piece. More information below in the 'GPK History' section & checklist.

— There are two original OS1 characters and an OS2 character that have a Nomenclature misspelling or an updated name for the new release. This includes the silver & gold foil cards and small gum sticker for characters 2b Thin LYNNE, instead of Thin LYNN, 4a Brainy JANEY, rather than Brainy JANIE, and 12b SARAH Slime, instead of SARA Slime. The silver card pictured below is a promotional card mock-up image.



— The third Garbage Pail Kids set in which the Topps Company Logo, or stylized 't' symbol, can be found within the artwork. On the baseball cap of cards 35a Rootin' RUBEN & 35b Booger BRIAN.

— The controversial name Schizo FRAN, removed from the last production run of the 2nd Series set, returns as a character for the silver & gold foil cards and the small gum stickers. The controversial nomenclature was (generically) changed to FRAN FRAN, back in 1986, because of the clinical term 'schizophrenic'.



— The only Error Cards, mistakes originating at the later printing stage and not considered a true Variation card, are for BIG sticker 39a COLIN 911, which can be found with a short green shadow around the door window or a long green shadow coming down from the door window, as well as for card 27b Punchy PAUL, which can be found with one or two, light or dark, blue lines to the right of the character.

— The ANS2 'Garbage Pail Kids : Gross Stickers' Ad Campaign centered around the new Scratch 'n Stink subset cards...the literal backside of the ANS1 character 33a Phat PHIL & 33b Ill WILL can be located in the bottom right-hand corner of the ad holding a spray can and tagging the word 'STINK!' in a very OS1 character 30a New Wave DAVE & 30b Grafitti PETEY-type pose, well known for his free-style 'SMUT' tag.



— The five Small Sticker characters not found as foil cards are: 13a JOE Blow & 13b ROD Wad (NOTE: the popped gum has been changed from the original Bazooka pink to the new gross green color; this can also be seen on the Argentina #84 Los Asquerositos card front), 17a Over FLO & 17b Moist JOYCE, 21a SALLY Suction & 21b Teethin' TRINA, 23a Split KIT & 23b Mixed-Up MITCH, and 24a Starrin' DARREN & 24b Peepin' TOM.

— There are forty-seven Nomenclature Changes, including one name & word position reversed, for the twenty-nine images used from the 1988 unpublished OS16 set compared to the 2003 ANS1 set; only eleven names remained unchanged. The nomenclature was updated with more contemporaty names or with new puns or phrases; see the 'Comprehensive Checklist' section further below for a full listing.

— During 2003, artist Jay Lynch was commissioned by the Topps Company to sketch drawings for a potential new set idea called Garbage Pail Pets. Although the original product was never produced, Lynch developed three pre-production pencil and ink concept sketches for the proposed set. Instead, Topps decided to slightly render and release the unpublished OS16 GPK set from 1988 re-titled as ANS1 from their non-sport card division. The idea is very similar to the 1998 Meanie Babies set by Comic Images but are a parody of the Garbage Pail Kids format. The concept was finally realized in the 30th Anniversary set released in July of 2015 within the Garbage Pail Pets subset as ten different characters completed by artists Mark Pingitore and Brent Engstrom.



— In May of 2003, artist Tom Bunk was consigned to draw six new pieces of artwork for the ANS1 GPK set from Jay Lynch's new concept sketches. Five out of the six drawings were chosen to be included in the new series and one rejected image was not. The five OS16 final artwork images of Tom Bunk's not used are card numbers 640, 641, 650, 658 and 659 and replaced by the five new card numbers and images below.

— The only artwork completed by artist James Warhola for the OS16 set in 1988 that was removed from the ANS1 set entirely and not replaced by any new image was cards 645a Busy BEA and 645b Handy MANDY. Warhola returned to creating GPK for the ANS2 set.



— Pictured below is Tom Bunk's Bazooka gag, rejected artwork by Topps based off of a Jay Lynch concept that did not make the set. The artwork was later scheduled to be handed out at the 2012 New York Comic Con; however, bonus cards B7a Gummy GARY & B7b Bubble BRETT (butt) were discontinued or cancelled and not printed at that time. Below are two color rough concepts and a printed card image that was finally released ten years later in August of 2013 ascard 2 of 4 Gummy GARY by Abrams ComicArts for their GPK Wall Calendar.





— GPK concept and reverse card artist and writer Jay Lynch came up with the gags for the twelve new characters for the ANS1 set; these new images replaced the missing characters from the unpublished OS16 set. Pictured below is the character for cards 35a Rootin' RUBEN & 35b Booger BRIAN.



— The OS2 unpublished artwork by artist John Pound, also considered for the OS6 GPK set, was scheduled to be released within the OS16 set as cards 639a GUY Pie & 639b Pepperoni Toni and finally published in the ANS1 set as cards 9a Cheesy CHARLIE & 9b Pizza Face CHASE; notice the four fingers on the character instead of the three fingers of later OS characters. The image was also used within the GPK Poster set as poster #7 "Eat My Face!".






— Artist Tom Bunk's Original Concept artwork for cards 33a Phat PHIL and 33b Ill WILL had several questions listed out on the side panel; these questions were intended for Jeff Zapata, the then art director for the Topps entertainment cards. The questions listed are: Gold tooth?, Diaper? and No Jacket? A gold tooth was indeed added to the final artwork, a diaper replaced the underwear and the jacket was later removed. The 'hate' was also changed up as well as peircings and necklaces.



— In 1988, before the actual release of the planned OS16 GPK set, Topps released the Dinosaurs Attack! card set. This was second in the series of 'Attack' sets after the Mars Attacks! set from 1962. The exact artwork layout for card #39 Trilobite Terror, created by artist XNO/Chet Darmstaedter, became one of the GPK concepts for cards 657a Crawly RALEIGH & 657b Bugged BOYD painted by John Pound. Coincidently, or not, card #655b within the OS16 set is titled DINO Attacks. The image was finally released in this set as cards 4a Cootie CODY & 4b Buggin' BRANDON.



— In May of 2003, artist John Pound was consigned to draw six new artwork pieces for the ANS1 GPK set from Jay Lynch's concept sketches. All six drawings were chosen to be included in the new set. The six OS16 final artwork images of John Pound's not used are card numbers 626, 636, 637, 642, 644 and 651; replaced by the six new card numbers numbers 22, 34, 35, 36, 37 and 38. — The Next-Gen GPK artists, Pat Glover and Sean Glover, worked on the rendered artwork of the Foil cards for the ANS1 through ANS3 sets. The Glover brothers also worked on the rendered artwork for the ANS1 small stickers.
