RELEASE PERIOD : OCTOBER 2014

The rebranded 'Yearly' sequential set, 2014 Series 2 GPK ('2014S2') was released in the Fall of 2014 by Topps, Inc. and distributed in October, five months after the OS2 Chrome set released in July of 2013 and nine months after the 2014 Series 1 set released in January of 2014. The 'Yearly' sets would continue to be released roughly twice yearly for the next decade and be referred to as 'Thematic' sets; this release contained a major superhero battles subset & bonus cards, card comics, and patch relics parodying the logos of the GPK superheroes.

The GPK set includes all-new artwork by artists Tom Bunk Brent Engstrom, Layron DeJarnette, Joe Simko, Dave Gross, Mark Pingitore, Fred Harper, John Cebollero, JungHwa Im and Colin Walton (art director); and several additional artists that assisted with autograph, sketch cards and writing including Neil Camera and Pat Barrett. The brand manager for this release was Jordan Greenstein which makes up sales and marketing. For the first print run, each foil or plastic pack, with a suggested retail price of $2.49, contains ten stickers, except for the Hobby Collector Edition box which packs contain six stickers per pack with exclusive premium content.

Previews World had the two hobby items listed as AUG142005, hobby box, and AUG142006, hobby collector box, with a pack price tags of SRP $2.99 and SRP $5.49, respectively, and being in shops on November 5, 2014. Per announcement, "Unleash the power of the GPK superheroes with Garbage Pail Kids 2014 series 2! Between Avengers, SHEILD, Batman, and more, superheroes are more popular than ever. The set contains No nostalgic PEEL HERE arrow on the card fronts or die-cuts in order to reduce production costs; the entire card is now a sticker. The 'PEEL HERE' arrow was put up to a vote at Topps and it was found that kids would not want the arrow on their stickers; no matter the direction. It should be noted that international releases of yesteryears without a die-cut often had the arrow pointing towards the card edge. The ommision of the 'PEEL HERE' arrow and die-cuts have only erroneously happened in the past. It is important to point out that for the Original Series GPK cards the charactes had specific die-cuts and the newer releases had the same shape.

The card Numbering starts at #67 to follow the sequential order of the 2014S1 set; and the bonus cards start at #10. The packs remain at 10 cards per pack, previously known as 'Mega' packs, at a higher SRP; whereas BNS1 had 8 cards per pack. The exception are the Hobby Collector Edition packs which contain 6 cards per pack due to the exclusive premium content.

The 2014S2 Mock-Up packaging and product release sheets used for promotional purposes show the 2014S2 boxes as being simply turned to a red color and still having the 2014S1 title and characters; the box color ended up being changed to a light blue color for the actual release. The 2015S1 promotional material also shows the red 2014S1 mock-up box.

The release is the ninth GPK set to contain Sketch Cards and die-cut sketch cards numbering 1/1, one-of-a-kind. Die-Cut Sketch cards can be found within hobby boxes inserted 1:? packs, or within hobby collector edition boxes inserted 1:?, and regular sketch cards found within retail boxes inserted 1:171 packs. Several artists worked on the sketch cards for this release: Brent Engstrom, Fred Wheaton, Dustin Graham, David Gross, Neil Camera, Mark Pingitore, Joe Simko, Jeff Zapata, Layron DeJarnette, Steve Potter, John Cebollero and Colin Walton. Besides the sketch cards located within the boxes the artists were given ten blank sketch card 'returns' from the Topps company, and once approved, could be kept, sold or auctioned—these sketch cards are often more highly detailed and often times go for a higher price.

GPK artist Brent Engstrom completed this horror-inspired character for Fright Rags, for their T-shirt line, and since it's a licensed Topps product the image can be found as bonus cards B13a Frightening FREDDY & B13b Maniac MIKE with a black background. These are a slight deviation from the Fright Rags names of Fright Rag FREDDY & Cinemaniac MIKE found with a black or orange T-shirt background. The characters and props from the horror flicks include: Michael Myers' work suit, pumpkin and knife from Halloween; Freddy Krueger's glove (and claws) from A Nightmare from Elm Street; Jason Vorhees' hockey mask from Friday the 13th (III); the Ball from Phantasm; Ash William's chainsaw from Evil Dead (II), very Texas Chainsaw Massacre-esque; Pinhead's nails (in mask) from Hellraiser and Charles Lee Ray's orange hair from Chucky. The ruddy cheeks are reminiscent of Billy the Puppet's mask from Saw.

The following six artists signed Artist Autograph Cards for the new set: Brent Engstrom, Joe Simko, Layron DeJarnette, Mark Pingitore, David Gross and JungWa Im. Whatever artist worked on the base card set signed their own cards that they completed the final artwork for.

The patch relic cards and character back cards (that replaced the blank backs of 2014S1) are new types of insert Chase Cards for the 2014S2 set. The parallels stickers (green, black, gold, red), canvas cards, sepia cards, bonus cards, printing plates, C-Name cards, die-cut + standard sketch cards and artist autograph cards are all returning chase cards for the series. Although the canvas card is pictured with a white border on the mock-up promotional image, the actual canvas cards have a black border; the image can also be located on the 2015S1 promotional material, along with the Swiss ARNIE character, due to the new product not being fully developed yet for imaging.

The tenth set to have a Checklist titled and outlined with the color blue, after the ANS6, ANS7, Flashback sets, BNS1 through BNS3 sets (not including the BNS Mini set) and 2014S1. The recent base sets are so large that they need two checklists, 'Checklist A' and 'Checklist B'. This is the third GPK set checklist to detail artist and writer inclusion for the Topps set; this hasn't been seen since the Trash Can Trolls in 1991 and Wacky Packages this year. The set contains no insert checklist for the chase cards.

This unpublished Promotional card image contains a reversed head of Tom Bunk's OS13 character 538a Cat-Cradle CATHY & 538b Gooey GWEN placed on top of Brent Engstrom's character for 72a Connect The DOT & 72b Drawn DAWN. This may have been a 'flash' image for a Motion card subset pulled from production where the character connets the dots and fully fleshes out her face.

The base card and bonus cards contain no GPK Nomenclature in white type, only in black type; this does not include the promo cards P1, P2, P3 and P4 which uphold the GPK law that dark blue nameplates should have white type.

Topps licensed the Garbage Pail Kids brand to IDW for a comic book series set for release in December of 2014. Due to this licensing, Topps is able to print these images as promotional and bonus material. The wonderful otaku image by artist Joe Simko can be found on the Topps P1, P2, P3 and P4 promo cards as Comic CONNER, Fan BOYD, Cosplay CODY & Geeky GUY; each handed out at the SDCC, NYCC, Philly Show and Topps.com, respectively. The character can also be found on the Topps CC1a, CC1b, CC7a and CC7b JUMBO cards as Comic CONNER, Cosplay CODY, Fan BOYD & Geeky GUY available at the SDCC, Topps online store, NYCC and Topps online store, respectively. It is fun to point out that Geeky GUY is the only quadruplet name on card for the same character image. The character can also be found on IDW's Official Collector Binder handed out at the NYCC and the 'retail incentive version' GPK comic. The first series to have GPK promo card characters not found within the actual set. The P4 Geeky Guy promo card was intended for the Comikaze Expo, but the P4 Smilin' STAN card by artist Mark Pingitore was produced as its replacement due to the Marvel tie-in and the promo was used as a Topps.com online exclusive with the purchase of the Series 2 "B" Jumbo cards.

The release and set information located on the backside of the P1 promo card handed out in July at the SDCC and the P2, P3 and the two different P4 Promo Cards handed out in October/Nov at the NYCC, Philly Show, Comikaze Expo and Topps.com are quite different, respectively. Due to Topps removing several Marvel superhero cards from this release the set was reduced from 152 cards down to 132 cards to collect. These changes may have caused the set to be pushed out from an October release to going on sale in November instead.

The incredible IDW Comic-Con RON Bonus Card painted by artist Brent Engstrom can be located within the 'deluxe version' IDW GPK comic released in December. As a licensed product of Topps, the image can also be found as CC10a and CC10b JUMBO cards as Comic-Con RON & Bonus JONAS available at the NYCC or Topps online store, respectively, as part of the Comic-Con Series 2 JUMBO card set. Engstrom painted this character in the middle of his 2014S2 deadline assigment so it fits in nicely within the set.

Two of the rare superhero (or zero) Subsets for the 2014S2 set are the eleven infamous C-name cards and the art variant cards. The C-Name GPK characters are produced as 'short prints' often found in sport card releases by Topps and other entertainment products; these inserts are usually unannounced, no odds are given with no pack ratio, do not have a published quantity and meant as a surprise for collectors to find. However, for this release, a pack ratio is given for the C-name cards, 1:100 per pack. There are no parallel cards of the C-names and they can be located within all packaging types. There are no parallel cards of the art variant cards either, five superheros in different hero suits, and can only be found 1 per case within the Collector's boxes.

The third release for the Topps Comic-Con JUMBO Card is CC13a Smilin' STAN completed by artist Mark Pingitore for the Comikaze Expo. Concepts from various artists were turned in and although all were done in very good taste the least 'offensive' one was picked, with a very 'nice' name (a good rhyme instead of an adjective works wells sometimes; ex. 'STAN The Man'). At this stage, it's more of a Cabbage Patch Kids ad for Stan Lee at the Comikaze Expo that could have been named STAN Ding. However, the artwork at hand still serves it's purpose and gets the point and fun across to convention-goers and collectors. The Topps P4 promo card of the same name was handed out at the same time the Jumbo card was available; however, it contains a dark blue nameplate with white lettering. The image can be found on 2015S1 bonus cards B1a Smilin' STAN & B1b Laughin' LEE as well.

The Same Forename occurs three times within the new 2014S2 set for cards 69b Ice TREY and 126a TREY Cycle, for cards 108a DEE N A and 127a Greed DEE and for cards 131b BRUCE Pain and B12b Bad BRUCE.

Various GPK Ads found on Facebook for their cover photo for the different products and events happening up to the 2014S2 release; for the IDW and Jumbo cards released at the NYCC and later at Topps online, for the 2014S2 release in October which date was changed to November, for the ComiKaze show and exclusive promo and Jumbo card and the IDW comic released in December.

The twenty-third set to contain cards with the GPK Acronym found within the artwork; the GPK acronym found on the toy block of cards 120a Amped ANDREA & 120b Surfin' SOPHIE.

A 2014S2 GPK-related image is present in the 2015S1 Wacky Packages set, although the artwork has been altered with the GPK facade face removed and one of the running characters. Brent Engstrom's character 79a Haunted HOWIE & 79b Scary LARRY can be found on the billboard card back for #50 Motel 666—a parody of 'Motel 6'.

The Puzzle Preview cards are back; they were absent for the last two GPK releases. The newer gray puzzle border color can be found again for this release; which goes well with the haunted house theme of cards 79a Haunted HOWIE & 79b Scary LARRY; see the sepia card image pictured further above. Topps had previously decided against 'puzzle preview' cards, as was changed with Wacky Packages franchise, due to the size of the set; there's a larger chance of receiving one of the two twin base card singles that show the completed image, rather than just one preview card on the backside of a card per Topps.

Several artists worked on the standard and the die-cut sketch cards for this release: Fred Wheaton, Joe Simko, Neil Camera, Layron DeJarnette, Mark Pingitore, Jeff Zapata, David Gross, John Cebollero, Brent Engstrom, Steve Potter, Colin Walton and newcomer Dustin Graham.

Artist Tom Bunk, the only active veteran GPK artist for this release, completed ten cards for the Battles subset and in which only four were published and where two of the four were changed in-house by Topps. The superheroes and villians GPK themed set, as a whole, was supposed to be slightly larger with 10 Battles cards and 10 Full Comic cards as listed on the initial product release material, but greatly reduced. The Topps company secured a multi-year licensing pact with Marvel and the Marvel Super Hero Universe back in 1999; it isn't fully known why Topps backed-off from parodying Marvel and its characters for this release and mainly concentrated on the DC characters. Partial images for the unpublished Bunk pieces can be located on the back of a few of the 2014S2 card backs; 122b with Saber-Tooth TYLER, 124b with VICTOR Von Gloom, 126b Beelze BUBBA, 130b Magnetic MAGNUS, et cetera for the villians, whereas the superheroes are not pictured whatsover. Juxtapoz magazine published an interview with Tom Bunk for their August 2014 issue and posted the following image to their Instagram account with the full artwork image with VICTOR Von Gloom.

Next-generation GPK artist Fred Harper is finally back for a bonus card image for characters B18a Fishy FELIPE & B18b Puffed PAUL; with concept artwork by Brent Engstrom. Harper's previous artwork contribution was for the ANS7 GPK release. Harper also completed sketch cards for the 2014S1 set and will be participating in sketch cards for the upcoming 2015S1 set next year.

Besides Simko and Engstrom, the third next-gen GPK artist to work with IDW is none other than Mark Pingitore who scored the 'regular version' comic cover; the image can be seen above within the 'Fun Facts' with the last GPK Facebook Ads. Pingitore's GPK artwork continues to get tighter and more polished with each set released and is the third highest contributor for final artwork and concepts for this release; color rough for cards 77a MOE Angle & 77b Turned LEIF is pictured below.

The largest contributor to the 2014S2 set is GPK artist Brent Engstrom who contributed more than twenty-eight paintings for the recent set and numerous concepts that were completed by other artists. Engstrom starts with a digital 'pencil rough' and tight penicl which is then placed within a GPK template from Topps as a 'color rough' that displays the GPK header, nameplate, 'PEEL HERE' arrow and die-cut outline; thus giving a size comparison and proper placement. The final artwork is manually painted, scanned and turned into Topps for production. The orginal concept for cards #67 with four less teeth, the color rough for cards #73 with a different color floor and walls and concept for cards #79 with no kids:

ABOVE: The original concept for cards #91 with no body and just a head with breaking teeth; for cards #92 with a full body instead of a bust shot and the concept for cards #111 with a head and not self-painting himself. BELOW: The original concept for cards #94 with body upright and the image placed horizontal.

Due to the staggering number of card images painted by artist Brent Engstrom, and turning in 40+ concepts to Topps for the release, several gags were completed by other artists. Considering tight deadlines it's not always possible to paint all of your own concepts. Artists may also be given extra assignments if deadlines are met or if too many approved concepts need to be assiged and finished by other artists. The original concept for cards #113 changed to character coming out of the artwork and hammering his own nail and for cards #128, a Robocop 'Hobo'cop parody, changed to an Iron Man parody by Colin Walton (the art director) for the superhero theme of cards completed by Layron DeJarnette.

Next-generation GPK artist Layron DeJarnette is back in a big way drawing sketch cards and signing autograph cards as well as single-handedly tackling the GPK superheroes subset within the regular 2014S2 base set; the cohesiveness really shows in these eleven stand-out pieces which are the only rare cards with C-names and art variants images.

Newcomer GPK sketch card artist Dustin Graham, no stranger to the Wacky Packages community, came up with several concepts for the last GPK set with Brent Engstrom and has contributed sketch cards for this new GPK release. Graham has an inking style very similar to Jay Lynch, with nice thick penstrokes, and his sketch cards hit home with a strong nostalgic Original Series feel and really adds to the GPK canon. His portrait sketches of Brent Engstrom's current Kids make them already feel classic.

Wacky Packages and GPK artist extraordinaire David Gross found time in his busy WP schedule to submit GPK concepts and complete two paintings himself. Character artwork for bonus cards #B16 is similar to one of the ANS6 concept pieces turned in to Topps by artist Fred Wheaton, both pictured below, respectively—another busy Wacky Pack-er that has little time for GPK work, but turns in stunning sketch cards release after release. Artists that turn in the same concept happens quite often, even within the same series release; for one incident, three artists all turned in a similar concept piece for the same set, usually the first one submitted is selected.

GPK artist Joe Simko, of 'Wax Eye' that released the satirical parody sets Cereal Killers and Stupid Heroes, is the second highest contributor to the 2014S2 release. Simko finished a Where's Waldo-type parody card over a period of three days, off-and-on, using water colors and white paint for the highlights; the piece for cards #97 has a staggering number of GPK characters in the artwork and thankfully can be found as a 9-piece puzzle within the set in order to enjoy the detail up close. The image was a tribute artwork piece of sorts to Tom Bunk after Simko and Co. for the upcoming 30 Years of Garbage documentary after they visited his studio in New York for an interview. The piece is very reminiscent of Bunk's crowded scene artwork for MAD magazine.

Two Rejected Artwork pieces painted by Mark PIngitore and Dave Gross remain unpublished by Topps, respsectively, the first showing of oven mitt GPK getting the hand at the end of the padded 'thumb' finger burned on the tray of cookies and a samurai slicing his kimono off with his katana witha spray of blood droplets.

Several of the superhero reverse card backs contain GPK WANTED posters, a nostalgic throwback to the OS3 and OS4 GPK releases. Pat Barrett wrote all of the bios for the reverse card backs and the artwork and writing for all of the Comic Backs was completed by Pat Barrett and Colin Walton.
