The nostalgic and thematic "We Hate the 80s", 2018 Series 1 (aka "2018S1" project, for short), GPK set announcement was released by the Topps Company, Inc. on Tuesday August 15, 2017—only three months after the Battle of the Bands 2017S2 set announcemnet—with hobby and retail electronic sell sheets breaking down the source material with mock-up promotional images. The wacky and wistful parody set was scheduled to be released on Tuesday, January 17, 2018 and stated that "the Garbage Pail Kids are skewering the iconic decade from which they were born! "We Hate the '80s" features all-new art, parodying cartoons, toys, TV, films, video games, fashion and more, broken down into genre-specific subsets".

The GPK series includes all-new artwork and contributions by artists Brent Engstrom, Joe Simko, David Gross, Layron DeJarnette, Fred Wheaton, Miran Kim, Neil Camera, Smokin' Joe McWilliams, JungHwa Im, Colin Walton (editor, art director, writer) and Mark Von Ohlen (brand manager) with previously published material by veteran artists John Pound, Tom Bunk and David Burke; most individuals involved submitted their own concepts and nomenclature, otherwise Topps attempted with their efforts. For the first print run, each foil or plastic pack (with a suggested retail price of $1.99) contains eight sticker cards, except for the Hobby Collector Edition box with exclusive premium content packs that contain eight stickers per pack or may contain seven stickers per pack with a special insert.

THE GOLDBERGS TEAM UP WITH TOPPS' GARBAGE PAIL KIDS FOR 1980S SET

The Garbage Pail Kids have called in some Hollywood friends for their next release. Topps revealed on Thursday that its We Hate the 1980s set coming in January will include autographs from the cast of ABC’s The Goldbergs. Who’ll make the cut and become one of the Kids? According to Topps, the entire main cast of the 1980s-based show will be inking up for the set. That includes: ADAM F. Goldberg as creator, writer, producer • SEAN Giambrone as Adam F. Goldberg • PATTON Oswalt as the VO of adult Adam • TROY Gentile as Barry Goldberg • HAYLEY Orrantia as Erica Goldberg • WENDI McLendon-Covey as Beverly Goldberg • JEFF Garlin as Murray Goldberg • GEORGE Segal as Albert “Pops” Solomon • & BRYAN Callen as Coach Rick Mellor.

NOTE: 'The Goldbergs' made an appearance in the 2015S2 GPK 30th Anniversary set as a one-card crossover spot for a piece of artwork that was painted for (adult) Adam Goldberg by artist Joe Simko for partaking as a Producer for the '30 Years of Garbage' documentary and letting the crew film several interviews on location on 'The Goldbergs' soundstage. GPK images can be found all over (kid) Adam's bedroom. This may be one of the strongest subsets to look forward to due to the tight paintings and cohesiveness of the two artists.

The last Non-Sport Update issue of 2017 had a short write-up on the upcoming 2018S1 'We Hate the '80s' subset for the cast of 'The Goldbergs' show that is set, dab-smack, during 1980-something. The article shows artwork for all nine images painted by GPK artists Joe Simko and Brent Engstrom. The set will also contain Sitcom Autograph cards signed by the nine participating cast members along with Artist Autograph cards signed by the two participating artists, 25 per subject, so two signatures for each character.









The 2018S1 'We Hate the 80s' release is the sixteenth GPK set to contain Sketch Cards numbering 1/1 (one-of-a-kind) found within hobby boxes or retail boxes. Standard sketch cards (retail box exclusive), Die-cut shaped sketch cards (hobby collector exclusive), 'folded' Panoramic sketch cards (one artist; retail value fat pack exclusive), 'dual' Panoramic sketch cards (two artists; hobby collector exclusive) and Loaded sketch cards (four Standard sketch cards; blaster value box exclusive).

— In mid-May, the art director at Topps requested Concepts for the next GPK retail release revolving around musicians be submitted. Collectors have had a taste of this nostalgic theme through various exclusive online sets sold over the past fews years poking fun at comic conventions. Concepts were turned in over the next few weeks in June and the ones approved were painted throughout the month of July 2017. The company has started to give lengthier deadlines allowing the freelance artists the time to turn in tighter images. Topps had artist Brent Engstrom place his 'Battle of the Bands' assignment on the back burner in May to paint four early approved concepts for the promotional sheet.

— In general, the color concept step has been cut out of the Pre-Production Process by Topps, which goes right from the 'pencil' concept straight to the final artwork, unless a color concept can get the point across better. For artist Brent Engstrom's ozone layer parody within the 'History' subset, a toxic green ozone and the infamous ozone hole was added to the color concept, however, the final artwork contains only the deathly sick planet-head. The ozone, hole and green toxic fumes were added afterwards with Photoshop by the artist. Another version, with brown toxic fumes, was also turned into Topps for variation purposes and was the piece selected that eventually became the card image during production.



— There are several Tribute concept pieces within the 80's set that not only pays tribute to that particular time period, but also to the Garbage Pail Kids cards that took the nation by storm the second half of that decade. The artwork includes the 'Toys' subset for Miran Kim's Glo Worm parody that pays tribute to John Pound's OS5 worm-infested character, the 'Cartoons' subset for Miran Kim's He-Man piece that pays tribute to Pound's OS4 unzipped concept and her Monchichi parody that pays tribute to Tom Bunk's OS11 pacifier character. The 'Video Games' subset contains JungHwa Im's Donkey Kong parody that pays tribute to Brent Engstrom's 2015S2 princess-napper, her Super Mario Bros. parody that pays tribute to Pound's OS14 toadstool concept (identical nomenclature), her Dig Dug parody that pays tribute to his OS8 bike pump character and from the 'Fashions & Fads' subset for Pound's OS8 squeezed gag. The 'Video Games' subset also contains Joe Simko's Atari (background with old rainbow striped logo) gag that pays tribute to Jay Lynch's birdbrain concept painted by John Pound. The 'History' subset for Gross' Cold War parody pays tribute to Pound's OS2 two-headed character.

— Another 'Cartoons' subset tribute piece by artist Joe Simko is a wonderful nod to the He-Man parody originally found within the John Pound commissioned artwork 'Slime Time Snack Pack' 2011 release by Craze One (Adam White) and follow-up 2012 'Super' pack. The same image was purchased by Topps for the 2012 Brand-New Series set and can be found on bonus cards B4a and B4b Barbarian BRIAN as well as on Jumbo card CC6a sold at the 2014 San Diego Comic Convention and the Jumbo card CC6b Eternal ADAM sold at Topps Online the following month.



— Artist Layron DeJarnette had been M.I.A. from recent GPK sets but has thankfully returned to the fold with six new paintings poking fun at Batman, Prince, breakdancing, Max Headroom, The Breakfast Club and Flashdance. DeJarnette wrote: "Here's a modicum of history of this card—originally the illustration was painted to be part of the 2017 Philly Non-Sports exclusive card series but was taken out because Topps couldn't print up two DC comic characters and sell them both within the small set; Jeff illustrated a GPK Superman for the series." As Layron stated, the Batman parody found within the 'Movies' subset was completed in early 2017 for the Philly set where fangs would've been added to the character (found on the 2018S1 printed card), but was pulled and replaced with a Vegas Elvis gag instead. — A few artists that mainly work within the Wacky Packages world will crossover to the GPK realm from time to time; think Neil Camera or Smokin' Joe McWilliams, and vice versa, like Joe Simo and Brent Engstrom, et cetera. Much like artist David Gross who started working out on the All-New Series phase of the parody brands, both himself and Fred Wheaton would contribute to the Garbage Pail Kids sets when time permitted. Wheaton complete the final GPK artwork for the ANS6 image for cards 38a I-Clod TODD and 38b MP TREY in 2007, and more recently, the 2016 online Halloween image for cards 6a VANNA Vamp and 6b Succubus SUSAN (originally intended for, but pulled from, the 2017S1 Adam-Geddon release). For the 80's-themed set, Wheaton contributes two more pieces within the 'Toys' and 'Culture' subsets. Notice the additional tape added to the V.H.S. concept.





— The 10-card Wax Wrapper insert subset, exclusive to the Hobby Collector boxes, is not only a parody of Topps' wax wrapper packs of yesteryears, but also a subtle tribute to Topps parody brands released in the past, specfically in the 80's. The card for #1's E.T. parody includes artist John Pound's OS14 extraterrestrial character, #3's Masters of the Universe parody contains his OS2 Presidential podium and pose, #5's Horror Flicks parody includes his OS15 Freddy Krueger character, #6's Ghostbusters II parody contains Pound's Wacky Packages '91 ghost symbol and #7's Batman parody includes his OS1 Fat MATT face and his Wacky Packages '91 bloated characer. The card for #4's Alf parody includes artist Brent Engstrom's 2015S2 cat-eating alien, #8's Nintendo Game Pack parody includes his 2015S2 Link character, #9's TMNT parody contains Engstrom's BNS2 turtle head and #10's RoboCop parody includes his original concept (pictured below) for artist Layron DeJarnette's 2014S2 Iron Man tin can character. And, lastly, #2's A-Team parody contains artist Tom Bunk's OS8 nose-picking character within the theme. The set isn't necessarily original or authentic, but pays tribute.



— The Bathroom Buddies and Gross Bears Value box inserts make their fifth appearance within the Yearly thematic GPK sets which indlude 2016S1, 2016S2, 2017S1, 2017S2 and 2018S1. Fourteen characters were painted by artist Tom Bunk and stem from the unpublished 1990's 2nd Series set, where as the final image appears to be a new painting (artist ?) based off of an original Jay Lynch concept. There does exist three unpublished John Pound and a few Denis Beauvais paintings that have not been printed. The Topps company had artist John Cebollero try his hand at painting a Bathroom Buddies image based off of a Jay Lynch concept but it was never printed; Cebollero posted the image to social media in October of 2017. All Gross Bears button images were printed on card for the first time, except for 'Goodbye Bear', plus four previously unpublished final images; this marks the end of the Gross Bears inserts.



— Artist David Gross posted an interesting and Rejected (or unused) GPK concept to social media prior to the set being released.The human-looking GPK is holding a unboxed CPK doll and a birth certificate, while the CPK doll is holding a GPK pack plucked from a card display box. Overall, the nuanced piece looks to be two CPK dolls which may have have been too close for comfort for Topps and their past, rocky relationship with Original Appalachian Artworks and the popular fad produced by Coleco industries, Inc. during the 80's.



— Several concept pieces of completed paintings were removed from the 'Classic' GPK On-Demand set and placed into the 'We Hate the 80s' yearly set. The artwork was conceptualized in late May of 2017 and the final artwork was due in early June of the same year. The characters included two of artist Brent Engstrom's concepts for the D&D parody from the '80s Toys' subset for cards 3of9a DEE & D and 3of9b DON-Geon Master, his Kid 'n Play hip hop parody from the '80s Fashions & Fads' subset for cards 60f9a Flattop AESOP and 6of9b Flat MATT and artist Joe Simko's concept for the missing kids milk carton compaign parody from the '80s History' subset for cards 7of9a Milk CARLTON and 7of9b Have You Seen MIA.
