SERIES INTRODUCTION

Release Date: AUGUST 2004

The "All-New" Series 3 GPK were released in the fall of 2004 by Topps, Inc. and distributed in September. A total of 2 print run was released during a continued interest of old 80's nostalgic toys and hobbies. The new GPK series is comprised of all new artwork by veteran GPK artists John Pound, Tom Bunk, James Warhola, and concept art by Jay Lynch. This series also includes newcomer GPK artists Strephon Taylor, Luis Diaz, Pat Glover, Sean Glover, Ray Lago, John Czop, Keith Webb, Aron Laikin, Sean Greathead, David Gross, and concept artist Jeff Zapata (who has taken over for John Williams as art director for the ANS3). For the first print run, each foil pack (with a suggested retail price of 99¢) contains 5 sticker cards (with a great glossy finish), 1 Gold Foil card sticker, and a "Scratch 'n' Stink" sticker or "Pop-Up" card inserted one in every 6 packs . The set also contains 3 bonus cards that can be found in special 'bonus boxes' located at different retail chains. The foil stickers are touched-up work of characters from the original releases. The series again starts back at number one.

FUN FACTS & TIDBITS

     1. The First U.S. GPK Set To Have Promo Cards, much like the promo card inlay sheet of the All-New Seris 1 which showcased three promo stickers on a peel away inlay (1 of 3 "Juicy JESS"; 2 of 3 "Disgustin' DUSTIN"; and 3 of 3 "Rad BRAD"), this is the first official GPK promo card which was released at the San Diego Comic Convention in August of 2004.

2. The"Flick-It" sequence Section on the backs of several of the comic backs were Completed By the Design Studio, called "Apartment 4G", the same department who's figure animation is showcased on Topps garbagepailkidsworld.com website.

3. The series contains one of Luis Diaz's Signature Pieces - the pink water (squirt) bottle. Flying behind the motorcycle of cards cards 30a "Chopper CHAD" and 30b "Hurlin' HARLEY". The pink water bottle can also be found in the ANS4 and ANS5 sets.

4. The All-New 3rd Series is the First Set To Contain "Pop-Up" Cards numbering 1 - 10. The set also features "Scratch 'N Stink" stickers for the second time, first being included in the ANS2 set, this time numbering twice as many, S1a/b - S12a/b. "Pop-Up" card #5 "HARRY Potty" and "Scratch 'N Stink" cards " S7a "Eyeball IVAN" and S7b "Eye-Candy ANDY".

5. The Promo Flyer, Sell Sheet, and ANS3 GPK Ads Show Pop-Up card #2 as "Disgustin' DUSTIN" (ANS1 - 24b), but the name used for the release is "Gutsy GABRIEL" (ANS1 - 24a).

6. The fourteenth series to contain cards with The GPK Acronym found within the artwork. The GPK acronym found on the jet ski of cards 2a "Jet Ski JESSE" and 2b "Flayed JAY", on the paper shredder machine of cards 24a "Shredded PAIGE" and 24b "HEATHER Shredder", on the grafittied wall of cards 26a "Taggin' TYLER" and 26b "Popped PAUL", on the tombstone of cards 28a "LAURA Cough" and 28b "Hackin' HANNAH", on the motorcycle of cards 30a "Chopper CHAD" and 30b "Hurlin' HARLEY", on the grand stands of cards 37a "Field Goal JOEL" and 37b "Kicked MICK", on the box kit of cards 38a "JERRY Rigged" and 38b "RAUL MODEL ", and on the towel of cards B5 "COLE Gate".

7. The first series to have the GPK Banner On the Wrapper that Matches the Color Of the Box - Orange.


8. Artist Tom Bunk's last name "BUNK" can be found on the grafittied wall in the cards for 26a "Taggin' TYLER" and 26b "Popped PAUL", along with other friends and family members names. Tom's name can also be found as "T. BUNK" on the front of the grand-stands next to the message "Get Your Kicks GPK" on cards 37a "Field Goal JOEL" and 37b "Kicked MICK".

9. The second series in which the Letter "G" can be found in the artwork within the set, on cards 4a "Sweaty BETTY" and 4b "Clammy SAMMY" on the chearleader's sweatshirt.

10. The Original "tentative" ANS3 Checklist was Changed replacing 8a "Pasty PAT" and 8b "COLE Gate" with 8a "Urine NATE" and 8b "Backwoods BRANDON" -"COLE Gate" became bonus card # B5 and "Pasty PAT" became an unpublished name. 36a "Starstruck CHUCK" and 36b "MARSHALL Artless" (ninja character with over 20-some 'throwing-stars' stuck into him) by artist Luis Diaz was replaced with 36a "Offensive OSCAR" and 36b "Foul FERNANDO", for now, an unpublished piece. Another unplublished piece by Ray Laugo entitled "Frankenfurter", a classic monster pic of frankenstein in a held hotdog bun with another hand applying mustard.

GPK HISTORY SECTION

1. In 2003, editer and artist Jeff Zapata of the Topps Entertainment Department was Approached To Become the New Art Director for the new GPK series replacing John Williams. Shown below are three original concept pieces that were delivered to Diaz and Laikin to complete for the new series.

2. A few ANS3 pieces came from Pencil Roughs Of John Pound's back in 1988 during the Original GPK Releases that were later redrawn by Jeff Zapata for the new releases. 22a "Cup O' JOE" and 22b "MAXWELL Louse"; 29a "Divin' DEVIN" and 29b "Nosedive NOAH"; B5 "COLE Gate" (pictured above).

3. GPK newcomer Artist David Gross worked on two rough images for the All-New 3rd Series set. Below is the two pencil rough pieces completed by David, concept idea by Strephon Taylor, and later re-worked and final artwork by Tom Bunk. The last unpublished rough painting was sent to Topps as a sample painting. David worked on several concept pieces for the ANS1 Wacky Packages (including "Asteroids"), and is working on 30 new paintings for the upcoming ANS2 Wacky Packages, including the "Goodbye Kitty" promo card, and pieces for the ANS4 GPK.

4. Famed satire Artist Tom Bunk completed 23 images for the All-New 3rd Series set. Below is a sample of sketch and color rough images for three of the cards describing the changes for the final artwork.

5. Famed parody Artist and Writer Jay Lynch completed back images for the All-New 3rd Series set. Jay wrote them all and did the roughs, later doing pencils and the inking (helped by a friend Matt Anderson). A freelancer hired by Topps does all of the coloring which is done now on the computer instead of by hand. In the late eighties several people helped Jay Lynch complete the comic backs he did for the older sets. Some of the individuals were Gary Whitney (penciling/inking), Shane Swank (coloring), and even his wife Carol Lynch (coloring).
