SERIES INTRODUCTION

Release Date: JANUARY 2007

The "All-New" Series 6 GPK were released in the winter of 2007 by Topps, Inc. and distributed in January - eight months after the "All-New" Series 5 set. The GPK series is comprised of all new artwork by veteran GPK artists John Pound, Tom Bunk and card-back and insert card artwork by Jay Lynch (and Scott Gross). This series also includes next-generation GPK artists Luis Diaz, David Gross and John Cebollero; along with newcomers Layron DeJarnette, Brent Engstrom, John Zeleznik; and concept artwork by Jeff Zapata (art director), Mark Pingitore, Fred Wheaton, Freeman, and several of the artists listed above. For the first print run, each foil pack (with a suggested retail price of 99¢) contains 5 sticker cards on 14 card stock (with a great gloss finish), and a chance to come across an Action Punch Out Card (Activity Card - inserted one in every 3 packs) or a Magnet card (inserted one in every 6 packs). The packs also contain a slab or stick of bubble gum not seen since the original GPK series in the 1980's, but sealed and protected with plastic (like the recent Wacky Packages released packs with gum), unlike the square gum packaged with the "All New" Series 1 packs. The set also contains five bonus cards that can be found in special 'bonus boxes' or 'blister packs' that are located at different retail chains. The series once again starts back at number one.

FUN FACTS & TIDBITS

1. Card 24b "TOM Bunk" (meaning top bunk) is named after the GPK artist Tom Bunk, and card 24a "Bunk Ben" (meaning bunk bed) could also pay tribute to Tom's son Ben whose first name can be found on several of Bunk's artwork pieces in the past. Artist John Pound placed a poster of "ADAM Bomb" and a GPK sticker on the wall by the benk bed.

2.
The Third U.S. GPK Set To Have an official Promo Card, unlike the promo card inlay sheet of the ANS1 which showcased three promo stickers on a peel away ad insert (1 of 3 "Juicy JESS"; 2 of 3 "Disgustin' DUSTIN"; and 3 of 3 "Rad BRAD"), this is the third official GPK promo card which was released at the San Diego Comic Convention in July of 2006, the first being P1 "CHRISTINA Ugliera" from the ANS3 set, and the second being P0 "Batty BRAD" from the ANS5 set. Card P2 "Alien ALAN" shares the same name as card 283a "Alien ALAN" from the original 7th series GPK. The name was changed to 40a "LEONARD Nimrod" and 40b "Trekkie TREVOR" for the final release with the GPK header changed to blue and the name bar changed to yellow.

Promo Front and Back

3.
The set contains several Same Names from previous GPK sets: ANS6 card 12a "Blown Away RAY" has the same name as ANS4 card 21a "Blown Away RAY", ANS6 card 14b "COLE Cut" has the same name as 6th series 229a "COLE Cut", ANS6 card 26a "MIKE Strike" has the same name as 8th series 301B "MIKE Strike", ANS6 card 30a "Clawed CLAUDE" has the same name as 10th series 410b "Clawed CLAUDE", ANS6 card P2 "Alien ALAN" has the same name as 7th series 283a "Alien ALAN".

4. The Knife portrayed in the artwork for card(s) "Orange JULIUS" was Changed To a vegetable Peeler for the advertisting and final artwork -- See the sell sheet and fold-out brochure above in the "Series Overview" section. However, the ONLY published place where the original concept of a knife can be seen is in the GPK ad within the Previews Nov. 20006, Vol. XVI issue. The original artwork showing the knife can be seen within the "Artwork Images" section.

5.
The series has two characters with the Same First Name -- cards 17a "SCOTT Pocket" and 39a "Shot SCOTT".

6.
As printed on the All-New Series 6 promotional material, the series Chase Cards include all-new Foil Action Punch Out Cards (Activity Cards, numbering 1-12) And Magnet Cards, replacing the Alphabet Stickers released for the All-New Series 5 set. Like many recycled ideas within the Topps non-sport card set history, the "Activity" card is not a new concept.
Activity Cards (Action Punch-Out Cards) first appeared in Topps' 1993 Nicktoons card set featuring the characters from the Rugrats, The Ren and Stimpy Show, and Doug cartoons. The Activity chase cards are die-cut cards that can be punched out and assembled to create interactive games -- As mentioned in the official Topps ANS6 release letter above, as an example, one would pull a tab to find out what's in "LUKE Puke"s vomit (which was changed to "CHRISTINA Barfarina"). Other GPK-related themes can be found throughout the Nicktoons set including tattoos, "file cards", and Triplex (a re-naming of the popular "Flick-It" section on the card backs of older GPK series sets). The Activity Cards replaced the originally planned Lenticular Cards late in production.
The GPK logo on the back of the Activity Cards can be found with 6 different headers: red, dark blue, orange, green, purple and light blue.

7. The first series to have a cards with a first Name that Is Small, and the Word is Big and Bold. Card 4a "JESS Married" and card 10b "ELLIOT Nest".

8.
For the promotional Advertisement material, the Fold-Out Brochure has the new Tag-Line "SUPER-GROSS STICKERS", including the mock-up Box image, the Promo back still has the old "GROSS STICKERS" tag-line, and the Sell Sheet has no mention of any of the taglines. The names on the advertising are the same as the released product, unlike the ANS5 set... though almost all of the name bars have changed colors and one GPK header is a different color. The box arrangement has the GPK logo as a double-lined banner rather than a straight banner which started with ANS6.

9. ANS6 is the first set to contain Mix And Match Card Backs. With the roughs created by Jay Lynch and the final artwork finished by newcomer Scott Gross, there are a total of 6 different characters made up of three cards each that can be inter-changed to create various variations of GPKids. The set does not have any comic backs and little written material.

10
. The All-New 6th Series is the Second Set To Contain "Magnet" Cards numbering 1 - 9 (similar to the ANS WP Magnets) that have a ration of 1 out of every 6 packs (1:6), the magnets are not die-cut as initually advertised in Previews.

11.
Artist Brent Engstrom intended the Original Concept behind cards 13a "TARA Too" and 13b "Naughty NATALIE" to be a tatto artist placing a tattoo on the client's arm, where the girl tattoo would then be spewing blood -- which would make a lot more sense. Instead, the person is a weight lifter and the existing tattoo is vomiting barf.

12.
The All-New Series 5 Wacky Packages contains a Parody of the Topps Garbage Pail Kids product, card #28 titled "Garbage Pail Geezers", artwork by Dave Gross. The unpublished Wacky Packages GPK parody, which concept piece was created by Fred Wheaton, is titled "Germy Pale Kids" but was not picked for the ANS5 WP set. Also pictured below is a unpublished concept piece by Dave Gross titled "Gentle Plain Kids" and his sketch original sketch artwork for the "Garbage Pail Geezers" concept.

13
. The series contains A Pair Of Cards that can be found With Black And White Numbers. ANS6 card 5a (white) and card 5b (black). This phenomenon can be found in the original 2nd series with cards 46a and 46b, in the original 3rd series with variation cards 113a, within the 7th series with variation cards 289b, and in ANS4 with cards 17a (white) and 17b (black); 21a (white) and 21b (black); 23a (white) and 23b (black); 24a (white) and 24b (black), and 26a (black) and 26b (white)

14
. The set contains several concepts that are very similar to other GPK And TCT card Ideas from previous Topps releases:

ANS6 cards 5a "Canned CARL" and 5b "Dogged DOUG"
Similar to 9th series cards 362a "DOUG Food" and 362b "NICK Yick"

ANS6 cards 26a "MIKE Strike" and 26b "Bowling For DALLAS"
Similar to 8th series cards 301A "Bowling ELAINE" and 301B "MIKE Strike"

ANS6 cards 29a "Rasta Roni TONY" and 29b "Spaghetti EDDY"
Similar to TCT cards 3a "AL A.Carte" and 3b "FREDDY Spaghetti"

ANS6 cards 39a "Shot SCOTT" and 39b "Fired FRED"
Similar to 14th series cards 549a "SHANNON Cannon" and 549b "Bomb SHELLY"

15.
Artist Luis Diaz's famous Pink Spray Water Bottle that can be seen throughout the ANS5 set is pictured in cards 8a "ROD N' Reel" and 8b "Fisher MANNY". You can also find "LD06" on the side of the boat which stands for "Lias Diaz 2006".

16
. A Topps Vault postcard was handed out at the San Diego Comic Con in July along with the promo cards. The postcard measures roughly 5 by 7 inches made out of sturdy card stock material with a gloss finish and showcases the "ADAM Bomb" character from the original 1st series set. Other Topps Vault magazine Advertising in the past few years has also shown various GPK images to promote the original artwork and collectibles being sold by the Topps Company through the eBay auction house. The 2006 ad again shows the "ADAM Bomb" GPK character among the images of Topps' other famous parody card craze, Wacky Packages. There was also a 2005 magazine ad that exclusively advertised for the Garbage Pail Kids that displayed images for five 1st series GPK cards (including "ADAM Bomb") and an image of a boy and girl drinking "Garbage Paik Kola" out of a miniature toilet. This image can also be found within the GPK Poster set on poster number one (see the "GPK Poster" set page within the "GPK Land" section for further information). The Feb/March 2007 issue of Non-Sport Update contained a Topps Vault ad that showcased several Garbage Pail Kids original artwork and the April/May 2007 issue of NSU had a new Topps Vault advertising the ANS5 WP artwork with the popular 1st Series kid "New Wave DAVE" and "Graffiti PETEY". Another Topps Vault ad showed up in September of 2007 displaying the final artwork for the 10th series cards "Vermin HERMAN" and "Gullivered TRAVIS" from the NSU The Encyclopedia Volume 1 publication.

17. The seventeenth series to contain cards with The GPK Acronym found within the artwork. The GPK acronym found on the dog food can of cards 5a "Canned CARL" and 5b "Dogged DOUG", on two signs of cards 14a "Deli CONNOR" and 14b "COLE Cut ", on the head bandana of cards 16a "Hacked HOGAN" and 16b "RUSSEL Mania" (the card also contains the "t" for the "Topps" logo in the corner rope), on the hand of cards on cards 23a "Poker Face CHASE" and 23b "Card Shark MARK", on the "GRAB-A-GPK" toy machine of cards 30a "Clawed CLAUDE" and 30b "ROY Toy", on the crown of cards 31a "Booger KEN" and 31b "Whopper WYATT ", on the train of cards 32a "THOMAS The Train Wreck" and 32b "Off The Rails GIAL", on the ketchup bottle of cards 37a "CAT Sup" and 37b "Bottled BAILEY", on the flag of cards 39a "Shot SCOTT" and 39b "Fired FRED", on the shirt of cards 40a "LEONARD Nimrod", 40b "Trekkie TREVOR" and P2 "Alien ALAN", on the sticker page of card b19 "Scrapped BROOKE" , on the shirt of the activity card 4 of 12 "Spit Kickers", and on the baseball cap of the mix and match card 5A.

18. The first series to have a series Checklist titled and outlined in the same Color as the packaging - blue (similar to the Wacky Package checklist theme minus the yellow). Also the first series to have an insert checklist contain the GPK logo and header. Magnet # 3 (3 of 12) "Cracked SHELDON" is mispelled "Craked SHELDON" on the insert checklist. The checklists are printed upside down (along with the rest of the card backs).

GPK HISTORY SECTION

1.GPK veteran Tom Bunk contributed 6 final Artwork Pieces from his own concepts for the ANS6 set, including one concept that started out as an idea I sent him which became card 36a "Tusky TIFFANY" and 36b "Buck Toothed BRENDA" (The original intended name for 36a was "Tusky TUCKER" as seen on the side panel of the gravity feed and on other ads). My original concept piece showed a GPKid with more of an incisor problem trying to floss his teeth. GPK concept artist Fred Wheaton was gracious enough to send me his rendering of my concept piece in tight pencil which is amazing. Bunk also put his twist on the concept idea and changed the overall theme to a girl with a canine issue -- he also paid tribute to my concept piece and put "A.J. Was Here" on the bathroom wall.

2. GPK Artist Luis Diaz pays tribute to two original GPK series characters in two different final artwork piesces for the ANS6 set. Diaz stuck in a oval framed picture of the 9th series character 355a "Beasty BOYD" and 355b "Semi COLIN" in the artwork for ANS6 3a "Me Too LOU" and 3b "Mirror MAX". Luis also stuck a square framed picture of the 12th series card 472a "WALTER Fall" and 472b "RONNY Nose" in the artwork for ANS6 22a "Tailored TAYLOR" and 22b "MITCH Stitched". These pictures cannot be seen on the printed card, but these pieces can be seen within the "Artwork Images" section above.

3.
GPK Newcomer Fred Wheaton contributed several concepts for the last Wacky Packages ANS4 set and has now turned his talent to GPK by having 4 ideas approved for the ANS6 set and actually painting one of the concepts himself, cards 38a "I-Clod TODD" and 38b "MP TREY". Several of his ideas that were not accepted were eerily close to some of the final artwork already found in the set. Both, his accepted concept pieces and two rejected ideas are pictured below.

4.
In early 2007, around the same time as the ANS6 GPK release, a new GPK Rack Pack was released by Topps that was packaged and distributed by Vintage Sports Cards. The 2-pack rack pack contained one ANS2 pack and one ANS3 pack for the suggested retail price of $1.59, packaged in the nostalgic ANS1 green color within a cardboard sleeve with a plastic window.

5.
Wacky Packages and GPK Artist David Gross, who contributed to the last ANS5 set with several concept pieces painted by other artists and a few painted by himself, is back by submitting several new gruesome concept ideas for the ANS6 set. The finished product for the concept piece titled "JESS Married" (parodying the popular wedding phrase "Just married"), painted by John Pound, can be found on the inside page of the Fold-Out Brochure depicting a newly married couple dragging the body parts of a bridesmaid instead of tin cans tied to the bumper of the car.
Dave also worked on a 'sushi' gag piece titled "SETH-Shimi" that is a bonus card. Find below two, slightly reworked, variations of Gross' concept pieces including the "JESS Married" concept.

6. Artist Jay Lynch was Commisioned by Topps To Create the special insert Activity Cards (Action Punch Outs). Lynch completed the final artwork himself for the Activity Cards -- no roughs exist for these cards. Jay worked with newcomer Scott Gross with the Mix and Match Card Backs, with Lynch completing the roughs and Scott finishing the final artwork. Jay also was the naming panel for the entire series as he was for ANS5.

7.
GPK artist Brent Engstrom contributed 6 final Artwork Pieces from his own concepts for the ANS6 set: 2a/b, 5a/b, 7a/b, 9a/b, 25a/b and 37a/b. 8. GPK veteran John Pound contributed 17 final Artwork Pieces for the ANS6 set, several of his own concepts (for cards 1a/b, 6a/b, 12a/b, 18a/b, 21a/b, 24a/b, and 27a/b), as well as concepts that Pound painted from various artists including David Gross (for cards 4a/b, 14a/b and 20a/b), Fred Wheaton (for cards 10a/b, 17a/b), Mark Pingitore (for card 15a/b), Jay Lynch (for card 19a/b and 31a/b), and Jeff Zapata (for cards 29a/b and 40a/b).

9.

His contributions for this series include cards 8a/b, 15a/b, 16a/b, 22a/b, 23a/b, 26a/b and 28a/b - painted by several artists. The concept piece for card 23a "Poker Face CHASE" and 23b "Card Shark MARK" was a collaboration between Mark and Cory Pierce (who runs the GPK Undgerground website). Pictured below are "alternate" poses or positions of the concept artwork accepted for the ANS6 set.
