GPK CARD PREVIEW 2012 ARTICLE

— Although there is no hobby box poster for this release, there are 6 Collectable Posters that come folded and packaged within the new GPK Jumbo Packs ($4.99 / 24 Cards + Poster); these packs are very reminiscent of the original 2nd, 3rd and 4th Series Rack Packs (minus the poster). The posters measure 12in x 14in and can be found with the following characters and nameplates: D. JAY, Snowy JOEY, Facial HARRY, Picky NICKY, Messy MARIO, and WILL Street. It seems more practical to remove the nameplates and have the GPK header instead. The backside of the 6 puzzle posters combine to create a large ADAM Bomb poster.

— The set introduces a new Puzzle Border color to the franchise; brown. There is a registered trademark and copyright date on every puzzle piece.



— The second GPK release to have a 110 Card Base set. The Orginal Series sets contain base sets up to 88 singles, 44 cards with twins, usually printed on a 132 card sheet; the All-New Series sets contain base sets of 80 singles, 40 cards with twins. The ANS6 Wacky Packages Mega Set of 2007 switched to a base set of 80 which would be the equivalent to the base set of the All-New Series GPK with twins. The All-New Series Wacky Packages having a base set of 55 cards in which the ANS7 GPK set, and now the Brand-New Series GPK set has adopted; a total of 110 cards with twins. However, the ANS7 GPK came with ten singles per pack (Mega Packs) whereas BNS comes with only eight cards per pack.

— The sixth set to have a series Checklist titled and outlined with the blue color, after the ANS6, ANS7 and Flashback sets; the checklist has the forename listed in bold. The set contains no insert, chase card checklist.



— The series has two sets of characters with the Same Forename; cards 4b Smoothed SALLY and 15b Snotty SALLY as well as cards 23a Super MANNY and B4a He-MANNY.

— A super-rare 'Be A Garbage Pail Kid' sweepstakes Golden Code Card can also be located within the packs (1:23,100); Fifty of these rare golden code cards (a card parody of the Willy Wonka Golden Ticket) have been randomly inserted within the BNS packs which can be redeemed for a box of free Topps product and a chance to be one of five grand prize winners who will have a character named after them. The GPK character in their like-ness will be painted by one of the GPK artists and included in a future set; the announcement took place at the beginning of 2013.

— Much like the ANS7 card 9a Deodor BRENT that was named after artist Brent Engstrom, the painter of the final artwork by the art directerJeff Zapata, the BNS card 36b Bearded BRENT, also completed by Brent Engstrom, showcases his name and a nice healthy beard. The bearded guys on the side of the painting portray Brent and his twin brother, Brandon. Cards 23a Super MANNY and 23b Airsick VICK showcase several humans getting retched on by the Superman parody character, the middle victim is a self portrait of Layron DeJarnette who completed the painting.

— The stickers on the backside of the Printing Plates were developed before the Brand-New Series name-change to the set, so the adhesives have 'Series 8' printed on them, which stands for All-New Series 8 (ANS8). Each Plate can be found in four different colors as part of the color separation during the printing press process; 'CMYK': cyan (blue), magenta (red), yellow and black (the 'K' which stand for 'key'); the other plates are alligned or keyed with the black plate.



— Artist Tom Bunk's surname 'BUNK' can be located on the detergent box for cards 14a Laundro MATT and 14b Clean GENE; Tom Bunk's initials 'TB' can be found on the toy block in cards 33a RAY Spray and 33b Brutal BARRY.

— A previously Unpublished GPK piece by artist Tom Bunk during the ANS1 GPK ressurection in 2003 was to be handed out at the 2012 New York Comic Con; however, bonus cards B7a Gummy GARY and B7b Bubble BRETT were discontinued or cancelled and never printed for this release. The image was later printed for the Abrams 2014 Wall Calendar as one of four LOST GPK cards as '2 of 4' Gummy GARY.



— The BNS1 series is the fifth GPK set to contain Sketch Cards numbering 1/1 (one-of-a-kind, found within hobby or retail boxes). Eleven GPK artists worked on the Sketch cards for this release; veteran artists Tom Bunk and James Warhola; next-generation artists Brent Engstrom, Fred Wheaton, Layron Dejarnette, Mark Pingitore, Joe Simko, Colin Walton, Jeff Zapata, Neil Camera, and Strephon Taylor (added at the end to complete sketch cards to meet the deadline). Besides the sketch cards located within the boxes, the artists were also given 10 blank sketch card 'returns' from the Topps company, and once approved, could be kept, sold or auctioned; these sketch cards are often more highly detailed.

— The GPK Mix & Match chase cards is new insert theme for GPK in general. The Loco Motion artwork, completed by Neil Camera, and the ADAM Mania artwork, completed by Mark Pingitore, are themes that have been used in previous GPK releases.



— The set brings back the Original Series Blue Nameplate with White Lettering instead of the black lettering found in the All-New Series and FlashBack Series sets. There are no names in white lettering found in the newer sets; this was brought to my attention by Keith Webb who contributed several concept pieces to the ANS3 GPK set back in 2004.

— The first new GPK set to have both A-name and B-name Bonus Card twin nomenclature. The first GPK set to have Hobby box exclusives: black parallel borders (a new border color), eight John Pound Bonus cards and Printing Plates.



— The set contains the Same Nomenclature as a previous GPK set: BNS card 16b JENNY Jelly has the same name as the OS2 card 69a JENNY Jelly.

— The art house magazine Chakota (CKA Mag), out of Mexico city, showcased four of artist Brent Engstrom's GPK images for the front cover of their publication; two from BNS1 for cards 29a BRICE Lice and 29b Infested IAN & 19a SAMMY Stooge and 19b Triple TED, and two pieces of artwork from ANS7 for cards 14a Coral CARSON and 14b CORA Reef & the wrap-around cover 27a Dog TROY and 17b MICHAEL Victim. The cover story also contains a short interview.




— The nineteenth series to have cards containing the GPK Acronym located within the artwork; on the super hero mask of cards 5a STEVE Rotters & 5b CALVIN America, on the garbage can award of cards 26a Academy WARD & 26b Grouchy OSCAR, on the toy block of cards 33a RAY Spray & 33b Brutal BARRY, on the PEZ dispenser parody for cards 41a JEZ Dispenser & 41b Candy SANDY, and on the parody Super Mario Bros. cap for 45a Messy MARIO & 45b Lewd LUIGI.

— GPK vetaran artist John Pound retired from commercial artwork in 2012, so there is no new commissioned artwork within the set. However, there are four images, eight cards in total, that can be found as Bonus cards within the Hobby boxes. One image, for cards B2a Garbage MANDY and B2b Haulin' HOLLY, was previously used for the 1998 short film Xavier by Todd Lincoln. A second character, for B4a He-MANNY and B4b Barbarian BRIAN was also released previously; the image can be found in the Craze One 'Slime Time Snack Pack' set released online by Adam White.



— The BNS GPK Hobby Sell Sheet displays a Mock-up Sketch Card by artist Fred Wheaton. Although Wheaton and other GPK sketch artists had a deadline of July to complete the BNS sketch cards the sell sheet Photoshopped sample is of Wheaton's batch of cards he completed for the GPK Flashback Series 3 set.



— GPK veteran artist Tom Bunk completed seventeen images for the Brand New Series set, including several images found on the promotional material and boxes. The mock-up promotional material shows card 52a Snowy JOEY and the mock-up retail and hobby box and wrappers show images for cards 1a D. JAY and 1b DEE J. and card 48a Cannon BILL.



— GPK next-gen artist Brent Engstrom returns to the BNS set with eleven amazing card images capturing the spirit of the Original Series GPK for the new set including the following rough sketches seen below for cards 3a Picky NICKY & 3b Pocketing PALMER with a slightly different perspective; 29a BRICE Lice & 29b Infested IAN (this character can be located on the box and wrapper artwork) with a significantly different pose; the concept for cards 41a JEZ Dispenser & 41b Candy SANDY with a different color scheme than the final image; plus cards 46a Proportional PAT & 46b Limber LEONARDO found on 'aged' yellow paper.




— GPK artist artist Mark Pingitore returns to the BNS set with two painted card images, eight concept pieces, and twenty or so conceptual sketches based off of others' ideas (Dave Gross and Colin Walton) for the new series including the card image below for 47a Grillin' GREG & 47b Hotdog HARRIS (based off of a Dave Gross concept) and further below for the conceptual sketch that became 8a BOB Sled & 8b Crashed CRAIG (based off of a Colin Walton concept) completed by artist Brent Engstrom. Pingitore also created the finished product for all ten of the ADAM Bomb Through History cards, including the concepts.



— Below is Mark Pingitore's riveting 'Rosie the Riveter' Unpublished Piece. Topps had the rivets added later which were not part of the original concept; sadly, the final artwork did not make it into the BNS set. The literal 'tough as nails' idea completely works; and the blue speech bubble could have held the GPK logo quite nicely. Detail-wise, the Westinghouse Electric Company pin on Rosie's collar now holds the initials "MP" for the artist.



— GPK artist Neil Camera completed work on all of the Loco Motion GPK chase cards as well as coming up with a concept piece or two; Camera also worked on the Sketch cards. Notice in the Loco Motion card mock-up image created by Topps for promotional purposes that #2 ADAM Bomb is looking up at his nuclear mushroom cloud; rough sketch pictured below. Also pictured below are Camera's color rough concept drawings for #4 Bruised LEE and #10 Scalped RALPH.





— GPK Artists Dave Gross and Joe Simko also contributed greatly to the BNS concepts for the new set; Simko also supplied the artwork for the GPK Reality TV card backs. Jeff Zapata also added ideas and concepts, including color sketch cards along with black & white sketch cards with gray wash.

— GPK Artist Layron DeJarnette is back for BNS by completing ten images for the new set and comletely capturing the Garbage Pail Kids look of old by encompassing the original Cabbage Patch Kids model face.



— GPK veteran artist James Warhola returns once again completing nine images for the Brand New Series set; and for the first time has signed on to complete Sketch cards for the series. A piece by Warhola for card 43a CRYSTAL Ball can be found within the promotional matieral as a gold parallel card.



— GPK newcomer artist JungHwa Im finished nine images for the BNS GPK set; the first, offical, full-time female GPK artist. Previously, only a Topps inhouse staff associate Mae Jeon, who heavily modeled John Pound's original artwork had worked on GPK (Jeon's artwork can be located within the OS3 set; a sample of her work can be found within this set as GPK Mix & Match card #9 Half-NELSON). Im's image for 25a LARRY Lo Mein can be found as a silver parallel card for the promotional material. Im has also completed other artwork for Topps, including Pimples below, an ANS8 Wacky Packages piece. The GPK artwork has a very Sloppy Slobs feel to them; a Merlin GPK parody release in 1993 throughout Europe.



— The heavy metal death band Cattle Decapitation released five GPK-style parody cards along with their last album release. The artwork could be found on their tour posters, and a foil pack of Cattle Decapitation cards depicting the band members in a retro, GPK-style format of trading card with artwork completed by GPK veteran artist Tom Bunk; the back of the cards copied the profile card style from days of old and checklist.



— In September of 2012, MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc.) released the 1987 Atlantic Motion Pictures, Inc. flick The Garbage Pail Kids Movie on DVD for the U.S. and Canadian territories which was distributed by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment LLC.; this is a re-packaging of the MGM GPK Movie released in the Fall of 2005.



— Topps released a Garbage Pail Kids Book, much like their Wacky Packages books, covering GPK set OS1 through OS5 in April of 2012; the book was publisehd by the Abrams with a foreward by cartoonist Art Spiegelman, one of the co-creators of GPK. The book comes with four previoulsy unreleased GPK artwork cards from the 80's. A French Les Crados Book was also released in October of 2012; more information can be found within the BNS Section on the License pages.



— Topps had several sales Banner Ads that ran on their website and Facebook pages during the Brand-New Series release period as part of the digital promotional material. One advertising the set 'On Sale Now', one for the NYCC and another promoting retail chains that carried the GPK product in their stores.





— Art directer Colin Walton is back once for the Brand-New Series (BNS) Garbage Pail Kids set as well as coming up with concepts and performing other tasks for the new set.
