SERIES INTRODUCTION

RELEASE DATE : OCTOBER 2013

The "Brand-New" Series 3 GPK set was released in the late Fall of 2013 by Topps, Inc. and distributed in October - seven months after the BNS2 set released in March of 2013. The GPK series includes all-new artwork or collaboration by veteran GPK artists Tom Bunk, John Pound and James Warhola, but is mainly comprised of artwork or collaboration by returning next-generation GPK artists Brent Engstrom, Layron DeJarnette, Joe Simko, Dave Gross, Pat Barrett, Mark Pingitore, JungHwa Im, Colin Walton (art director), Neil Camera, and newcomer Steve Potter. The 'brand manager' at Topps for GPK among other products is Steve Dumas. For the first print run, each foil or plastic pack (with a suggested retail price of $2.49) contains ten stickers on 14 card stock (with a great gloss finish), nine base card singles and a chance to come across a 3D Motion card (inserted 1:12 packs), a Sticker Scene card (inserted 1:6), an ADAM Bombing card (inserted 1:4), a base card Printing Plate (inserted 1:1,875; hobby bonus sticker plate 1:3,750, value bonus box Bonus plate 1:4,250; ADAM Bombing plate 1:18,250; 704 total), an Artist Autograph card (inserted 1:223; 3,300 total), and three levels of Parallel cards; Black border (inserted 1:2), Silver border (Hobby only; inserted 1:24), and Gold border (inserted 1:66; 85 per subject) and ADAM Bombing Parallel cards; Black border (inserted 1:24), Silver border (Hobby only; inserted 1:100), and Gold border (insterted 1:866; 85 per subject). The set also contains nine bonus card pairs; four found in special 'bonus boxes' (or 'value boxes'), eight found in Hobby boxes (1 per box; 1:24), and six found exclusively in Jumbo packs (no posters for this release). Ten different artists contributed to sketch cards for this set (inserted 1:440 Retail, 1:203 Hobby; 2,000 total) listed further below. Fifty "Be A GPK" Code cards can be located (inserted 1:14,700). There are also eleven very rare "C" name cards for the returning GPK characters (no odds given; no parallels).

FUN FACTS & TIDBITS

1
. The Card Numbering does NOT start back At #1, for the second time, since the original series. The set picks up the base card and bonus card numbering from BNS2. The packs are again back to 10 cards per pack (previously known as 'Mega' packs), at a higher SRP; whereas BNS1 had 8 cards per pack.

2
. The BNS3 series is the seventh GPK set to contain Sketch Cards numbering 1/1 (one-of-a-kind), found within hobby boxes (inserted 1:203 packs) or retail boxes (inserted 1:440 packs). Several GPK artists worked on the Sketch cards for this release; next-generation artists Brent Engstrom, Layron Dejarnette, Mark Pingitore, Joe Simko, Colin Walton, Neil Camera, Pat Barrett, and newcover Steve Potter. Besides the sketch cards located within the boxes, the artists were given ten blank sketch card 'returns' from the Topps company, and once approved, could be kept, sold or auctioned -- these sketch cards are often more highly detailed and go for a higher price.

3. The ADAM Bombing, Sticker Scenes, and (new styled) Artist Autograph cards are all new types of insert Chase Cards for the BNS3 set. The Parallels stickers, Bonus cards, Printing Plates, Motion cards, "C" cards and Sketch cards are returning chase cards for the series.

(R.I.P.'s: "Clemm", Edgar's wife; "Lenore", the dead girl comics based off of Edgar's POEms; "Aaron", superfan)

('New' Autograph styled cards for BNS3; Artist signature written on a clear square sticker placed on card)

4. The eighth series to have a series Checklist titled and outlined with the blue Color, after the ANS6, ANS7, Flashback sets, BNS1 and BNS2 sets. The recent base sets are so large they need two checlists, 'Checklist A' and 'Checklist B'. The first GPK checklist to detail artist and writer participation on the Topps set; this hasn't been seen since the Trash Can Trolls in 1991 (and Wacky Packages this year). The set contains NO Insert Checklist for the chase cards.

5. The set contains two instances of the GPK Header being used as part of the humor for the gag; as shattered glass of cards 140a Bellowing BELLA and 140b L
oud MELODY, and as 'Hangman' letters of cards 168a Hangman HANK and 168b LARRY Letters. These are infrequent occurances.

6. The forever famous ADAM Bomb Topps GPK Mascot character finds himself yet again on the packaging for the new series; as a companion to: Cards 193a MAX Stacks, 193b Heady HAL, and 193c MANNY Heads, as returning, re-imagined characters. There is also a ten-card subset entitled ADAM Bombing that pays tribute to ADAM Bomb using famous historical persons and settings.

7. The first Promotional Card since All-New Series was released by Topps for the BNS3 set and intended to be handed out at the 2013 Philly show -- for card P1 Hoodie HARLAN; the promo card (not a sticker) along with a P1 Wacky Package card and an unnumbered GPK MiniKins card, were mailed to attendees at a later date in November of 2013. The popular character was used for online promotional ads and on packaging for the set; more information on this card can be located within the GPK History section further below.

8. The third 'New' series to have "a" and "b" Bonus Card Twins and Hobby box exclusives: Silver parallel borders and eight bonus cards (four images).

9. Topps released the 1st series GPK MiniKins series the same month as the BNS3 set; the idea stemmed from the shelved GPK Eraser set that was in talks after the WP Eraser set release several years ago. The set contains 26 characters from the GPK Universe, found painted, or in solid colors of blue, red, green, or yellow, as well as the ultra rare, non-labeled, black -- for the soft resin molds; along with a 1.5 x 1.75 sticker with a mini character bio on the backside. The characters are taken from the following GPK sets: OS1 (9 figures), OS2 (9 figures), OS3 (1 figure), OS4 (1 figure), OS5 (2 figures), Magnet (1 figure), BNS1 (2 figures) and BNS2 (1 figure), in sequential order from the checklist. The solid colors pay a tribute to the GPK Cheap Toys from the 80's. 3 packs exist; 2 Figures with stickers package (UPC 8-87521-00947-3) found in gravity feed boxes, a 2 Figures with stickers package (UPC 8-87521-00947-3) with a peg-hook hole, and a 4 Figures with stickers package (UPC 8-87521-00953-4) also with a peg-hook hole. A GPK MiniKins promo card does exist for this release (unnumbered). All text written by Pat Barrett and Colin Walton.

The Checklist and sticker backs contain several name Inconsistencies from the actual card sets that the characters are taken from; character #4 TV Stevie, the correct OS1 spelling of the name is 10a Tee-Vee STEVIE, character #16 Spacey STACEY is correctly spelled 63a Spacey STACY from the OS2 set, and character #26 Fiery Francis is actually spelled 98a Firey FRANCIS from the BNS2 set.

10. The SUPER Rare cards for GPK, the 11 infamous "C" Cards that make up the OS "b" name for the re-imagined GPK characters for the BNS3 set were produced as "short prints" (often found in Topps' sports card releases and some entertainment products); the "b" names for this release are brand new. These inserts are unannounced, no odds are given (no pack ratio), do not have a published quantity, and meant as a surprise for collectors to find. There are no Parallels of the "c" name cards, and can be located within all packaging types.
The "a" and "b" card names were reversed from the OS releases for card 190a ROY Bot which is the OS2 "b" name.

11. The scarce usage of the GPK Name Bar as part of the gag is rare, and for it to be part of the character is even rarer; this phenomenon can be found on cards 162a Fresh FRED and 162b Scented SIMON; this is the third green name bar in the GPK canon, and the first un-outlined name bar.

12. The set continues with the old original series Blue Nameplate with White Lettering instead of the black lettering found in the All-New Series and FlashBack Series sets. There are no names in white lettering found in the newer sets; this was brought to my attention by Keith Webb for BNS1-- who contributed several concept pieces to the ANS3 GPK set back in 2004.

13. For card 146b Laurie LOGS, the Name is In bold Small Print, and the word 'logs is' in bold large print, whereas, it's usually the opposite.

14.The color schemes for the online Promotional Card Images are slightly different than their released counterparts. Base cards 137 have a blue GPK header and a dark pink name bar; and bonus cards B19 have a red GPK header.

15. Although the set contains a whopping TEN completed puzzles, the base set contains NO Puzzle Preview cards. The new puzzle border color is grey for this release. Topps decided against 'puzzle preview' cards (as changed with Topps' Wacky Packages franchise) due to the size of the set; there's a larger chance of receiving one of the two twin base card singles that show the completed image, rather than just one preview card on the backside of a card.

16. The packaging displays New Marketing language Slogans stating: "More All-New Art Than Ever Before ...
Awesome!". The packaging contains the very rare 'pink' header, found on very few boxes, let alone wrappers and cards.

(Facebook ad)

17. With the sheer size of the series it's shocking the set only has one set of characters with the Same First Name -- cards 179a Eaten ETHAN and 184b Equine ETHAN (although, the cards are close together within the set). Due to the "C" chase cards, card 178c JASON Basin has the same first name as 183a Disjointed JASON and card 182a Mad MAX has the same first name as 193a MAX stacks. Card 138b Amusement PARKER has the Same Name as the OS8 card 295B Amusement PARKER and card 179b Eaten ETHAN has the same name as ANS2 card 3a Eaten ETHAN.

18. GPK Greeting Cards were released by the Topps Compnany in November of 2013, a Topps Online Store release only, right after the BNS3 set release. 2 box versions are available, an "A" and "B" box with 10 greeting cards per box; 5 different images with 2 different names for each box -- for $19.99 each. The front side is the final artwork image, the backside includes a card image and name; "First Printing" is located on the back of the card -- for a total of 10 different images and 20 backside characters if both boxes were purchased.
Box "B" contains an Exclusive Image for the GPK Greeting Cards release; Snow BILL and Snowball's CHANCE (painting: Joe Simko; gag: Colin Walton).

19. The card backs include OS1-like Nostalgic Report Card Backs and GPK Comics, called 'Garbage Pail Comics' originated in BNS2, and like 'The Garbage Gang' title of yesteryears, contains the TM (trademark) symbol.

20. The returning and Re-Imagined GPK characters found with rare "C"-name cards have two characters per image for this release; it's slightly confusing name-wise, since the card contains only one name bar -- it would have been interesting if these cards had two name bars instead. Cards 176a Bony JOANIE, 176b Blind Date DANIELLE and 176c Thin LYNN can be found with a third character from the OS8 series, character 328A Glowing AMBER and 328B Bright DWIGHT located on the table.

21. There are two GPK Shout-Outs in the ALL-NEW Series 11 Wacky Packages set released in 2013; the bonus card B14 'Gentle Plain Kids' whose wrapper color scheme is identical to the BNS3 wrapper, including the nostalgic and rare pink header, and the usage of "Grade 3" in place of Series 3. Artist Brent Engstrom also threw in the OS6 GPK character 248a HECTOR Collector and 248b G.P.KAY to the back of card 25 Horderlands 2, banana peel and all.

(Final artwork and puzzle piece)

22. The twenty-first series to contain cards with The GPK Acronym found within the artwork. The GPK acronym found on the parody LEGO body of cards 149a Disjoint TED and 149b Let Go LENNY; on the cosplay shirt of cards 174a Cranky FRANKIE, 174b Terrible TERENCE, and 174c Bad BRAD; and on the wall in spraypaint of cards 180a Graffiti PETEY, 180b Fine ART, and 180b New Wave DAVE.

23. The RC Cola (Royal Crown Cola) Parody Name G.P.Kola from OS4 can be found on the aluminum soda can of cards 188a Large MARGE, 188b Bulky BETH, and 188c Broad MAUD, in the same fashion as it was found on the glass bottle of OS4 cards 128a Sloshed JOSH and 128b Low CAL; both characters and branding name can be found on the Sticker Scene for card 2 of 10.

GPK HISTORY SECTION

1
. Two GPK Veterans are back for the BNS3 set with all-new artwork; artist Tom Bunk who completed 5 images for the ADAM Bombing subset, and James Warhola who completed 5 images for the same subset.

2. The largest contributor to the BNS sets is GPK Artist Brent Engstrom who contributed more than 20 paintings for the BNS3 set. As seen below, Brent starts with a digital 'pencil rough' with color -- this piece shows the character with a full set of teeth. It is then placed within a GPK template as a 'color rough' which displays the GPK header, name bar, 'Peel Here' arrow and die-cut outline; thus giving a size comparison -- the online promotional card image (seen at the top of the page) has a blue GPK header and was intended to be used as an actual promo card (pictured within FunFacts & Tidbits). Finally, the final artwork is manually produced and turned into Topps -- the full set of teeth were replaced with two teeth as a shout-out to OS1 character Bony JOANIE and Thin LYNN requested by Topps. The character can also be found on the box and wrapper packaging and seen on promotional advertising for the set online.

3. Along with concept and final artwork, GPK Artist Mark Pingitore completed all the work for the Motion card and Sticker Scene chase cards for the set. Below is a progression panel of digital artwork, taken from John Pounds original artwork, that makes up Motion card #1 of 10. Pingitore also threw a shout-out to both veteran artists Tom Bunk and John Pound by placing their names on back of Sticker Scene card #6 of 10 as "Pound Place" and "Bunk Blvd"; a plethera of older GPK characters can be found within these cards.

4. This is the second brand-new GPK set where all-new artwork from GPK Veteran John Pound is not present (since his retirement from commercial artwork); although several of his previous artwork pieces can be found in the Sticker Scene and Motion card subsets, along with a purchased piece found in the Bonus card subset -- originally found in the online "Slime Time Snack Pack" set released by Adam White from the Craze One website; cards B16a SARAH Pail-In and B16b Lost LOUISE; the same set where the character for B4a He-MANNY and B4b Barbarian BRIAN from BNS1 can be found.
