For
the benefit of the visitors to this site, Gayaza High
School lies 12 miles north of Kampala, in Uganda, East
Africa. The school occupies an area of some 140 acres and
is strategically bounded on the north by the Makerere
University Farm. Gayaza owns a farm of its own which
serves the dual purpose of feeding the school and
equipping the girls with farming skills. Gayaza High School was started by the British Church Missionary Society in 1905 after a prominent Muganda chief described the lack of a boarding school for girls as "the Muganda's broken arm". He was supported in this by the first Headmistress of the school, Miss Alfreda Allen who was convinced "there was a need to give the best to these people who were so eager and enthusiastic to learn". Nevertheless, it took a lot of persuasion and explanation before some fathers could part company with their daughters. Today, many parents throughout the country wish to send their daughters to Gayaza High School because of its remarkable academic excellence. The Legacy The school started with four girls with the objective of providing them with basic education in farming, reading and writing. Almost one hundred years later, with a succession of outstanding headmistresses, the school has developed to great heights of academic achievement with all the amenities of a modern secondary school. As the country went through a series of political turmoil, Gayaza succeeded in maintaining its academic standards and miraculously overcoming any barriers to its progress. As a result, Gayaza has produced women who are determined to achieve, committed to service and team work and who place great value on unity of purpose. Today, Gayaza girls hold positions of responsibility and power throughout the world, in all walks of life. To find out more about this remarkable school, I recommend the following books:
