NEW BOYS LINTZ WIN AT SECOND ATTEMPT

1stXI

3rd May, 2006

Division A1 new boys Lintz earned their first win at the second attempt at the weekend as they beat Ponteland by six wickets.

Ponteland were all out for 202 but in reply Gary Christie scored 39 not out and Anthony Ward an undefeated 56 as Lintz overhauled that total.

Lintz secretary Bob Cook said: "After winning promotion back to the top division it was important for us to get a win early and we have done that now.

"As we found two years ago, if you make a bad start to the season that first win seems harder and harder to achieve.

"We lost the first game of the season to Shotley Bridge but at the weekend we did really well to knock off Ponteland's score.

"When a team goes over 200 runs it makes it difficult for you so we were pleased to win."

2006 SEASON PREVIEW

General

19th April, 2006

Lintz made an immediate return to the top flight after a one-year absence when they won the Division A2 championship by a mile. They never engage a pro and their only newcomer is Ryan McVittie.

"We will be relying on our stalwarts and juniors. We are very much a home grown club and are looking forward to playing in Division A1 again," said Chairman Bob Jackson who is also a director of Durham County.

LINTZ SPRINT INTO TOP FLIGHT

1stXI

24th August, 2005

Lintz clinched promotion back to Division A1 at the weekend with two games to spare.

A 102-run win against Consett left them 46 points clear of third-placed Whickham with two fixtures remaining. They now need just four points to guarantee the A2 title ahead of second-placed Greenside.

Stuart Clennell top-scored with 68 as Lintz put on 176-9 before bowling the home side out for 74.

Lintz secretary Bob Cook said: "Our win at the weekend has earned us promotion and everyone at the club is very pleased about that.

"It has been a good season for us and we've led the league virtually all season. We have only lost twice, but we have been fortunate in that we have had fewer games called off than other clubs.

"We were relegated last season so it has just been a brief stay in Division A2. We are now looking forward to competing in the top division again.

"We brought in bowler Michael O'Carroll for this season and he has performed really well, but we know that we will have to strengthen our squad a bit more before we play in Division A1."

LETHAL LINTZ ARE ON THE UP

1stXI

14th August, 2005

Lintz are well on course for an immediate return to the top flight after their game at Seaton Burn was the only one to be played.

The Burn were all out for just 68 and the most successful bowler for Lintz was spinner Michael Edmunds, who captured three wickets for just a single run.

O'Carroll, Graeme Clennell, Chris Bowes and Graeme Johnson were also all successful before Lintz romped home losing just one wicket.

CHAMPS RATTLED

Juniors

20th July, 2005

Successive undefeated opening partnerships guided Lintz to the points when they came up against champions Sacriston.

Having put on 127 without loss the previous week against Crookhall and then losing by seven wickets, Lintz wanted no repeat of that disaster.

Lintz bettered that knock by one run, reaching 128 without losing a wicket during their 20 overs, with Gray ending unbeaten on 56 and Hughes top-scoring with 70 not out.

LINTZ BOUNCE BACK TO MAINTAIN LEAD

1stXI

3rd July, 2005

After losing for only the first time last week, Lintz bounced back to form when they hurried to victory at home to Alnwick.

Faced with the formidable target of 202 in 50 overs, they needed only 26.2 as the runs flowed from Stuart Clennell whose 75 included four sixes and nine boundaries, Gordon Baker with 59 and Anthony Ward (34).

When Alnwick batted first they reached 201 losing just five wickets in their 50 overs. David Wright (52 not out), Gorman with 51, Peberdy (40) and Michael Brewis (38) all made useful contributions.

Lintz have now won eight of their nine games and still command a lead at the top of the table.

LEADERS TASTE DEFEAT FOR THE FIRST TIME

1stXI

26th June, 2005

Whickham enjoyed a mini celebration last night when they inflicted a first defeat of the season on leaders Lintz.

Robin Moor and Ryan Thornber were responsible for Lintz managing only 72 all out and second top Whickham romped home, losing just three wickets.

Moor delivered 15 overs, seven of them maidens, capturing four wickets for a mere 24 runs, and Thornber was equally effective, clinching figures of 4-37 from 13 overs.

Lintz struggled through 32.1 overs and almost half their total came from Anthony Ward, who struck six boundaries in 32 compiled in 72 minutes.

Replying, Whickham needed only 22 overs to record their sixth win in eight attempts.

LINTZ RECORD ON THE LINE

1stXI

17th June, 2005

Lintz made it six out of six last weekend and aim to take another step towards the Division A Two championship but they will not find it easy against second-top Consett tomorrow.

So far, Lintz have been unstoppable and boast the only 100% record in the two Divisions. Even so, they rate Consett highly and as the Steelmen have lost just once, the outcome of tomorrow's clash is crucial to both sides.

"We are very happy but not counting our chickens," said secretary Bob Cook.

"I can remember just a couple of years ago that we were leading in the top flight at the halfway stage, but then fell away badly."

With right arm spinner Michael Edmunds sidelined, Lintz are pleased to have left arm spin merchant Chris Bowes included in a full- strength side.

1st XI CLIMB WHILE THE SECONDS LOOK DOWN AND OUT

1st and 2nd XI's

The 2nd XI are looking relegation favourites as they were soundly beaten.

JUNIOR COACHING TO START

Juniors

10th March, 2004

WE'RE MISSING YOU ALREADY

Club

17th January, 2004

Everybody knows Alan Shearer is going to retire at the end of next season.

And everybody knows he is going to be missed by Newcastle United. Badly missed.

But it wasn't until I attended a talk-in at Lintz Cricket Club recently that I realised how concerned the supporters are about big Al's retirement and just who is going to replace him.

And rightly so. The No 9 black and white Newcastle United shirt is one of the most famous and coveted shirts in football.

But will anyone want to wear it knowing that they are always going to be compared with the greatest goalscorer in the history of the Premiership?

If the new man misses a good chance the cry will go up that Shearer would not have missed it.

I have already talked to Newcastle United and they do not intend to retire the No 9 shirt when Al finally calls it a day.

But they know that they have a problem.

And they are welcome to it.

SOME MAKE IT A FUNNY OLD GAME

Club

10th January, 2004

Footballers aren't the public's favourite people at the moment.

And it's not surprising considering some of the lurid headlines about them which jump out of the tabloids these days.

But there is another side to the game.

Take Newcastle United and their players who do an awful lot of unpublicised work for charity.

Last week Steve Harper gave up a night to go along to Lintz Cricket Club and the United goalkeeper made it clear right from the start that he did not want any kind of remuneration.

Now I don't know if you have ever heard Harps at a talk-in. But he's hilarious with his dry wit. The night went so well that after the interval Harps and myself were joined on the platform by United's quiet man, physiotherapist Derek Wright. And as often happens in situations like that, we couldn't shut Del Boy up.

So thanks a lot for a great night, lads!

A NIGHT WITH NEWCASTLE UNITED FOOTBALLERS

Club

18th December, 2003

The first 'Night with Newcastle United footballers' was a fantastic success, with all the tickets being sold.

Compere Alan Oliver (Chief Sports Writer - Newcastle Evening Chronicle) was joined by United reserve goalkeeper Steve Harper and senior physiotherapist Derek Wright.

Steve was in magical form with his dry wit, and gave us some great stories and memories about his time at Newcastle United and his hopes for the future.

It is hoped to have more nights in the future, keep with the website for latest updates and news.

LINTZ AIMING AT TOP FIVE FINISH

1st XI

6th August 2003

Lintz's title challenge may have faltered in mid-season but secretary Bob Cook insists that their campaign is far from over.

Lintz were going well in the first third of the season but a series of defeats around the halfway mark ended any realistic chance of joining Lanchester and Newcastle City in the title race.

But Cook says last season's runners-up still have plenty to play for as they aim to qualify for the JustSport Trophy by securing a top five finish.

Lintz currently lie in sixth position but their case was helped by a five-wicket win over bottom-of-the-table Backworth at the weekend.

Cook said: "All hopes of winning the title have gone now after the run of defeats we had a few weeks back.

"But we still have the JustSport to go for so there is plenty still at stake.

"It is good to have a cup competition like that because otherwise the season would be effectively over for a lot of the clubs in mid-table who are too far behind to go for the title.

"Obviously we would rather be competing for the title but no one at the club is down - we enjoy our cricket and we will hopefully regroup and come back better next season.

"But at the weekend it was just nice to get back on track with a win. Our acting skipper Gary Christie did the damage with the ball and took 5-37 then, after we lost a couple of early wickets, Graham Clennell made 56 and Christie 37 not out to help us home."

Bob is also the Chairman of Lintz Cricket Club.

CHRISTIE PUTS STRUGGLING LINTZ IN SEVENTH HEAVEN

Club

9th July 2003

Lintz avoided an unwanted hat-trick at the weekend as they revitalised their league title challenge with a victory at Ashington.

Lintz went into the match on the back of successive defeats against Lanchester and Tynedale - but they stopped the rot on Saturday.

The visitors posted 145-10, with Stephen Smith top-scoring with 40, before skittling Ashington out for 116 to clinch a 29-run victory.

Gary Christie turned in the performance of the match, claiming seven Ashington wickets for just 22 runs.

And Lintz secretary Bob Cook believes the weekend win was crucial if the club has genuine designs on the title.

He said: "I think it was essential we won that game.

"We had lost the previous two and we didn't want to go into the second half of the season on the back of a hat-trick of defeats.

"We have lost four games this season already and five is about the maximum you can afford to lose if you have genuine title ambitions.

"Gary Christie turned in what I would say was his best performance of the season so far on Saturday and that played a huge part in the win.

"The only problem is Gary will be missing for the next two weeks because he is on holiday.

"But this win keeps us in the hunt and it is up to us to keep it going in the second half of the campaign.

"We are still in there but the leaders Lanchester are flying at the moment and we need some of the top teams to start taking points off each other.

"We play Newcastle City at the weekend and that will be a tough game but if we win that one then it will help us gain some ground."

Lintz's victory sees them climb above Ashington and Shotley Bridge - who are six and fifth respectively - to go fourth in the NTSL table.

Club

1st July 2003

It has been announced that Chris Jones will be taking over the reigns from Ron Christie as Club Treasurer.

Ron has been Treasurer of the Club for 9 years and has decided to continue his role on the Management Committee.

We wish Ron and Chris all the best in their new roles.

LINTZ AIMING TO TOPPLE LEADERS

1st XI

27th June 2003

Lintz take on leaders Lanchester this weekend looking to kick-start their NTSL championship challenge.

Lintz lost by 77 runs at Tynedale last weekend but they are aiming to bounce back tomorrow and inflict Lanchester's first league defeat of the season.

Defeat at Hexham meant Tynedale leapfrogged Lintz to go third, behind Lanchester and Newcastle City, with Lintz dropping down to fourth place 33 points behind the leaders.

But Lintz secretary Bob Cook says a win against the pacesetters would put the club right back in the hunt.

Cook said: "It was very disappointing to lose against Tynedale but hopefully we can bounce back against Lanchester tomorrow.

"They have done really well so far to be top of the table and unbeaten at this stage of the season - they have been the surprise package so far, in my opinion.

"It will be tough for us but if we want to mount a realistic challenge then you have to beat the top teams and that's what we will be looking to do.

"We are in touch with the leading group and a win this weekend will put us right up there.

"We are quite confident that we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season - we just have to make sure that we produce consistent performances."

Article courtesy of Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

LINTZ MOVE INTO THIRD

1st XI

13th June 2003

Three successive wins have propelled Lintz into third position ahead of their attractive game against Shotley Bridge which secretary Bob Cook forecasts will be closely contested.

"We are pretty well matched with just one point between us. It is always tight when we play them and I expect it will be another tough match, but we are playing well and victories over Leadgate, Annfield Plain and Ryton will put us in good stead," claimed Cook.

Lintz made a bad start to the season, losing to Newcastle City, and their first four games earned them relatively few points - but they have come good and name an almost full-strength line-up tomorrow.

The only absentee is Stuart Clennell whose place is taken by Richard Guy. Brothers Gary and Michael Christie are included.

Shotley Bridge have an identical but have one bonus point less.

Under 18's

28th May 2003

Greenside suffered from the Moody blues when they were well beaten by nine wickets against Lintz.

SMITHY DOES IT AGAIN

Under 15's

28th May 2003

Andrew Smith was the star of the show as Lintz chalked up a hard-earned three wickets win over Blaydon.

Runs were at a premium with Blaydon managing 84-4 before finding Smith the stumbling block.

The opening batsman enjoyed a superb knock that eventually saw him fall four runs short of his half century but at the same time all but having sealed the points for Lintz.

JUST SHORT TON FOR SMITHY JUNIOR

Under 15's

14th May 2003

Time ran out for Lintz batsman Andrew Smith - but not before he had ensured an exciting win over Whickham.

The young batsman destroyed the Whickham attack almost single- handedly with a crushing unbeaten 97 but just failed to get his century.

Lintz recorded a nine-wicket win and this after a knock of 64 not out from John Bowman had earlier taken Whickham to 114-3.

LINTZ LOOKING FOR A FLYING START TO THE SEASON

Club

25th April 2003

The NTSL gets underway tomorrow with last season's runners-up Lintz beginning their campaign against newly-promoted Newcastle City. Lintz finished behind Shotley Bridge last season, and the champions begin their title defence at last year's third-placed side Lanchester. Lintz, who led the table for a sizeable part of last season, are aiming to go one better this time round and take the championship.

Secretary Bob Cook said: "I would hope we can go one better this season.

"We got off to a flying start last season and then faded away near the end so hopefully that won't happen again. But there is nothing better than a good start to the season for confidence and that is what we want against Newcastle City tomorrow.

"We have kept largely the same team and we have brought in early-to-mid order batsman David Baxter from Burnopfield who should be a good addition to our squad.

"Last season the title race went right to the wire and it will be tough again this season with teams like Shotley Bridge and last season's Division A2 champions Leadgate to contend with, but we are relishing the challenge."

LINTZ HEADLINE NEWS IN EVENING CHRONICLE

1st XI

22nd May, 2002

Rain decimated the fifth Saturday of the NTSL campaign, with only one match in each division being played to a conclusion.

In Division A1, Benwell & Walbottle managed 188-9 against Lintz, but the home side passed that total with six wickets to spare.

Lintz's win saw them go third in the table, level on points with Ashington immediately above them and Tynedale immediately below, and five points behind leaders Sacriston.

Lintz chairman Bob Jackson said: "Nobody likes seeing games called off - and if a club is ambitious as far as the league is concerned then it needs to play matches, so we were delighted to get the game on at the weekend.

"We don't employ a professional at the club and we use the money instead to buy equipment, including rain covers and a new waterhog.

"That meant that we were able to get the game on and ultimately it paid off for us as we won.

"I have to give great credit to the players from both sides because, when the rain stopped and we looked under the covers and saw how dry the surface was, everybody agreed that the match should go ahead."

Last season Lintz led the way at the top of the NTSL for much of the season before fading away at the end, but Jackson hopes the club can stay the course this time round.

He said: "We drifted off the pace towards the end of last season, mainly when some of our players became unavailable through holidays.

"We are not the only club to suffer from that problem, of course, but it did affect us.

"Hopefully this year we can do better than last season and keep going right to the end."

In Division A2, Backworth beat Percy Main by 60 runs in the only other game that saw a result.

Alnwick's match against Kirkley started but was abandoned with the home side at 98-1.

LINTZ SET TO BOUNCE BACK AFTER REVERSE

1st XI

13th July, 2001

Article courtesy of Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

If the form book is anything to go by Lintz should have a very good chance to resurrect their championship challenge at the expense of Whickham tomorrow. After going eight games unbeaten they tasted defeat for the first time in last week’s rain-affected match at Swalwell and secretary Bob Cook was the first to give credit to the victors. "A lot of sides would have given up but Swalwell were keen to play and they were rewarded even though the match went on until almost 9pm. Obviously we were disappointed to lose and we have now got to hit back immediately and keep the pressure on Annfield Plain" said Cook.

The defeat cost Lintz pole position and they are now five points adrift of Annfield Plain who have proved in the first half of the season that they have a lot of strength in depth. "The Plain will be strong contenders but if we can get back into winning form tomorrow then it will boost our confidence. Unfortunately Gary and Michael Christie are still unavailable and an additional blow is the absence of Graeme Clennell".

Lintz have asked second team captain Jimmy Murray to step up and both Trevor Wilson and Paul Cameron are named in Gordon Baker’s line up.

"Whickham suffered a bad defeat last weekend which took them to the bottom of the table but we will take nothing for granted even though we have beaten them twice so far" Cook said.

Clenners reaches another milestone…40

1st XI player Graeme Clennell reached 40 today, and to celebrate everyone at the Club was invited to a surprise birthday party held at the Cricket Club.

On the night, Graeme thought a few cricketing colleagues had organised a night out in Chester-le-Street, but after a few hours there, (long enough for the rest to get back to the Club and arrange everything), we went back to the Club to ‘pick up the others’, and Graeme was greeted with by his wife, Wendy, and other family and friends.

Everyone had an Indian take-away from the local Jam Darni at Whickham, and together with a few bottles of wine and champagne, the evening ended with a chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ and a speech from the man himself.

Everyone at Lintz Cricket Club wishes Graeme a Very Happy Birthday and Best Wishes for the future.

CRUNCH GAME AS LINTZ LOOK TO THE FUTURE

Club

21st July, 2000

Article courtesy of Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

Lintz go into battle against high-flying Annfield Plain tomorrow looking to push their claims for a place in next season’s Northumberland and Tyneside Premier League.

Last Saturday’s narrow 12-run victory over Consett, who are immediately above them in the NTSCL, has given 12th placed Lintz a great chance of a top-10 finish but they face a stern test against second-placed Plain, who beat Shotley Bridge by 53 runs last week.

Lintz secretary Bob Cook admitted that he was slightly disappointed at the club’s showing in the combined league this season, especially considering they had such a good season last summer.

But he says that win over Consett has given them a real opportunity to make it into the top flight when the league splits next season. He said "It’s been a bit disappointing this season really, considering the fact that we finished third in the Tyneside Senior League last season."

"The main reason we have struggled is that players have been unavailable for various reasons and that has meant that we have not been able to keep a settled side for most of the season. But the players seem to be pulling together now and if we can put a few good performances together then we have a chance of being in the new Premier Division when the league is reorganised. That win over Consett was very important to that end, because if we had lost that game then it would have been very hard for us indeed."

Lintz are looking forward to renewing their rivalries with Plain, who topped the TSL last season, tomorrow and Cook says that no-one should rule his club out. He said "Annfield Plain have been doing very well in recent seasons and the finished two places above us last year when they won the league. We will have to be at our best to beat them but we have also fared fairly well against them in the past and surprise results are not unheard of in cricket."

LINTZ LOSE TO LANGLEY PARK IN MILL COACHES SYD LUMLEY FINAL

2ndXI

6th September 1999

Despite a valiant effort late in the game, Lintz could not overcome Langley Park in the Final of the Syd Lumley Trophy sponsored by Mill Coaches.

After a slow start and some quick bowling, Lintz were restricted to 152 for 7 in their 35 overs, with a modest knock from Neville Harrison the pick of the Lintz batting.

The match was held at Beamish and East Stanley Cricket Club who run the competition.

Langley Park, from the Durham County League, started off brightly, knocking 50 from 8 overs, and by the 12th over they were well on their way. In a well diminished side because of the Willis Elliott final being played the same day, Lintz secretary and stalwart Bob Cook was brought into the attack and together with Lee Kerswell the run rate slowed down, but despite Bob taking 4 wickets, it was never enough after the quick-fire start and Langley Park finished off the match with a 6 and 4 from their middle order batsmen with 6 overs to spare.

LINTZ SECURE A.M. BROWN CUP FINAL WIN

1stXI

19th August 1999

On a typical British Summer Sunday afternoon, Lintz beat Leadgate in the final of the AM Brown trophy - the first trophy Lintz 1st XI have won since they beat Blaydon in the Clavering Final in 1991.

A match-winning and man-of-the-match knock of 96 from Stuart Clennell, a quick fire knock of 37 from Gary Innes and a well fought out innings by David Nevin gave Lintz a tremendous score of 196 from their 35 overs – a total that seemed a long way for the Leadgate batsmen.

Leadgate's reply was quick, and a healthy opening stand proved not enough, as Lintz bowled Leadgate out for a well short 126.
