Welcome to Shamokin PA Part of the Black Diamond Region is well known for the production of coal . Even today as the Coal Region . It was the primary booming town For Coal in early years . Till the well known minners strick . When most of the coal manufactures was forced to shut down . Some mines clapsed others Still remain open to this day . Some of the historic landmarks you will see here still Remain While others are just a memory . In later years Coal seemed to be less popular for home heating . Today most homes are being heating by Oil, Gas, or Electric . So the sale of coal was not of value anymore. So this once a booming city . Has suffer though the years with industry . Businesses has shut down or moved away . Todays Shamokin is Less Populated with very few jobs or stors . Althought alot of things changed in Shamokin I can still say its my hometown . The name Shamokin Has came for an old indian Name Spelled Backwords Nikomahs . No history that indians Have lived here in the past But they was belived to have lived here at one time . But one thing that certain Its the Coal Reagion . From around the year 1913 or before or after The city Was known for Coal Manufacturing and Has become well known For just that . At one time Shamokin was Known as An attraction . Today This city Is over a 150 years old and Most of the landmakes you have seen in the Pictues on the site are no longer Here . Most have Been gone for years . Alot of the Coal Mining is no longer Working There are few but Most are gone . All the trains as well . Now the City has become A Retirement area mostly .
