The children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of that good old pioneer coup 2 CONC le, Uncle Noah and Aunt Mary Gross, met at the latters; home in Liberty township recently t 2 CONC o pay honored homage to their honored parents and ancestors and help them to commemorate thei 2 CONC r 60th wedding anniversary. Mr. Gross is 83 years old and his wife 76. They are enjoying go 2 CONC od health and are remarkably well preserved for people of their years. So mucn has been sai 2 CONC d of these good and amiable old people that we feel at a loss to add anything of their live 2 CONC s that would be new and interesting, but through the kindness of a friend we are enabled to g 2 CONC ive the following account of this notable event--an event but few enjoy. There were presen 2 CONC t on this occasion all the children living, except Mrs. Chas. Talbot, as follows: J.F., G.W. 2 CONC , J. H. and T. J. Gross; Mrs. Rufus Goodson and Mrs. Jesse Truitt. Besides these the husban 2 CONC d and wives of the children, 14 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren. Mrs. Jordan Cherry, A 2 CONC . D. Gross and wife and J. B. Atterberry were also present. The children had prepared an ele 2 CONC gant surprise dinner and when once more parents, sons and daughters had set down to one tabl 2 CONC e under the family roof the scene was one of indescribable pleasure and comfort to all, espec 2 CONC ially Uncle Noah and Aunt Mary. After dinner the photograph man was called into service an 2 CONC d as UncleNoah said, "shot the crowd." Uncle Noah was in high spirits and related some of th 2 CONC e customs of pioneer days when "he was a boy," contrasting the times when he helped his fathe 2 CONC r blaze the way for civilization in Randolph county and turn the virgin sod with ox teams wit 2 CONC h out the present day of conveniences and riding plows. At that time the country was new an 2 CONC d Randolph county extended to the Iowa line. The settlers lived on wild meats asnd honey, fo 2 CONC r there was plenty of game--deer, turkey and all kinds of small game in abundance. The cloth 2 CONC ing was all home-made and Uncle Noah made the first pair of shoes he ever had, and was also t 2 CONC he manufacturer of his own wedding shoes. When he grew to manhood he began teaching school a 2 CONC nd was one of the noted pedagogues of his day. He was married to Mary Sears Nov 7, 1839, an 2 CONC d to this union 11children were born, of which 7 are still living. They moved to Macon count 2 CONC y in 1849, and are honored members of the Old Settlers' association of Macon and Randolph Cou 2 CONC nties. Uncle Noah likes to recount early recollections, but never claims anything special o 2 CONC r startling for himself, except a fast foot race or two, and they were forced. When a boy, h 2 CONC e and an elderly sister and _____ kill a big black snake. The snake showed fight and starte 2 CONC d for them with head up, mouth open and its forked tongue darting out at lightning speed. No 2 CONC ah and his sister took to their heels with the snake in hot pursuit. In their hasty retrea 2 CONC t Noah fell down being scared so badly at the oncoming snake that he rolled over and over lik 2 CONC e a hoop. He finally got to galloping on his hands and feet, and ran this way for fifty yar 2 CONC d like a scared wolf. The snake saw that it wasn't in it with Noah in a race of that kind an 2 CONC d stopped. The next exciting foot race Uncle Noah had was during the Civil War. One night i 2 CONC n the fall of 1864 he heard a knock at his door. After calling out, "Who comes there?" the s 2 CONC tranger without replied by asking him to get out of bed and come out as he wished to have a c 2 CONC hat with him. The Knox county militia had recently made a raid through Macon and Randolph co 2 CONC unties, and as Uncle Noah was a Southern sympathizer he began to realize that his probation h 2 CONC ere below as near an end. He reluctantly got out of bed and opened the door. As he did so h 2 CONC e fullyexpected to be taken out and shot. When the door was opened the stranger walked in an 2 CONC d took a seat. By this time Uncle Noah had slipped on his pants and asked the stranger what h 2 CONC e wanted. The fellow said it was not suitable that the family should hear what was said, an 2 CONC d invited Uncle Noah out of the house to talk matters over. At this juncture Mr. Gross spie 2 CONC d four men through the window sitting on horses and heavily armed. He said to the man in th 2 CONC e house, "I'll step into the other room and get my boots." "Never mind your boots," said th 2 CONC e man. "All right," said Uncle Noah, "I'll go out bare-footed." Unexpectedly and unnotice 2 CONC d by the stranger Uncle Noah darted out of a back door into the darkness with greyhound speed 2 CONC , and as he cleared his apple orchard fence he lit into a bed of hogs. The grunts and squeal 2 CONC s of the hogs scared him worse, and he ran a mile without stopping to look back. He remaine 2 CONC d in hiding until about daybreak, when he stole his way back to the house. After Uncle Noa 2 CONC h lhad slipped out of the back door the stranger waited a few minutes for him to return fro 2 CONC m the other room, and then said to Mrs. Gross: "I guess the old man has got scared and ran of 2 CONC f." The strangers remained about the house a few minutes and then left. Uncle Noah conclude 2 CONC d afterwards that the men were from the Southern army and, knowing his sympathies for the Sou 2 CONC th, stopped there for information concerning war conditions in that locality. Those were tim 2 CONC es when good citizens were called to their doors and shot down in cold blood, and Uncle Noa 2 CONC h thought a good foot race safer, under the circumstances, than going outdoors for a "friendl 2 CONC y chat." Aunt Mary Gross remembers distinctly about the cyclone that passed over the wester 2 CONC n part of the county in 1833. They were called hurricances then. She was bout ten years ol 2 CONC d then and lived with her father, Hardy Sears, near Vaughn;s school house. She remembers ho 2 CONC w black and threatening the clouds looked before the cyclone hit the ground. Her father wa 2 CONC s standing in the door watching the clouds, when suddenly a gust of wind drew him from the do 2 CONC or into the yard. He was blown against a hickory tree about as large as an ordinary man's bo 2 CONC dy. He grabbed hold of this near the gound and held on like death until the storm as over 2 CONC . This tree was twisted off by the cyclone a few feet above his arms, and with the exceptio 2 CONC n of getting his arms and hands skinned Mr. Sears was not otherwise hurt. The roof and som 2 CONC e of the top logs were blown from the house, but no one was hurt. She also remembers the cir 2 CONC cumstances of the accidental killing of her uncle, James Buchanan. James Buchanan and his br 2 CONC ohter, Joshua, were out hunting one day and in trailing a deer they got separated. James wor 2 CONC e a bearskin coat. He found the deer and shot it, and while he was stooping down skinning i 2 CONC t Joshua came in sight, and seeing the object through the undergrowth took it to be a bear ea 2 CONC ting on a carcass. He drew a bead on it with his rifle and, at the crack of his gun, James r 2 CONC olled over dead. Anyone can better imagine Joshua's terrible feelings when he discovered hi 2 CONC s awful mistake than we could describe them. James Buchanan was the great-grandfather of Jam 2 CONC es Buchanan, who now resides north of Clifton Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Gross have been married six 2 CONC ty years, and are now living happily together on their farm ten miles north of Callao. The 2 CONC y have also been members of the Primitive Baptist Church for 61 years and now hold their memb 2 CONC ership at Chariton church, Macon County. 2 CONT 2 CONT !BIOGRAPHY: GENERAL HISTORY OF MACON COUNTY MISSOURI 2 CONT Published: Chicago, H. Between 1816 and 1818 Groce sold this farm to William Cross. Peter Groce had a trac 2 CONC t adjoining that of John Groce. 2 CONT The Groce family in this county goes back to two members of the family, apparently either fa 2 CONC ther and son or brothers. Theobald and Simon, who emigrated to America from Germany. They liv 2 CONC ed in the former Duchy of Baden in southwest Germany. They were Moravians. Apparently seekin 2 CONC g religious freedom as well as lured by the prospect of economic success in a new world, the 2 CONC y sailed down the Rhine to Rotterdam, Holland, where they boarded the sip Europa, under Capt 2 CONC . The two Groces settled in a Moravian community near Lancaster Pennsylvania. 2 CONT Around 1767 some of the Groce families moved to Surrey, now Yadkin county, North Carolina, f 2 CONC rom whence some members of the county later moved to Clinton county.
